The "flipside" of Ike Quebec's legendary run of albums for Blue Note – a huge set of material recorded only as 45 singles during his same stretch at the label! Although Quebec's work as a soulful tenorist has been well documented and reissued over the years on albums like Blue & Sentimental and Heavy Soul, Ike also cut a fair number of singles aimed at the jukebox and radio crowds of the time – tunes that were more in the gutsy tenor and organ mode recorded by labels like Prestige or Chess, and which never made it onto any of the full-length sets for Blue Note! This great little package brings together all of Ike's 26 tracks recorded for 45s in the late 50s and early 60s – material that features organ on most numbers, played by either Ike Quebec, Sir Charles Thompson, or the enigmatic Edwin Swanston. Quebec's tone and phrasing is similar to his Blue Note LP work of the period, but there's also a more relaxed, and more punctuated feel to these recordings – one that's not as rough or raw as other jukebox tenor stars of the time, but which still steps out past the usual Blue Note poise, especially on the original numbers. Some tracks were briefly issued on the 80s collection With A Song In My Heart, and in a Mosaic box – but this is the first proper Blue Note album of the material. A killer set of work from this tremendous tenorist – rare sides, but titles that stand with his best classics from the time! Lost material that Ike Quebec recorded for Blue Note in the early 60s, but which wasn't issued until the 80s. A few of the tracks on the album were issued on the rare short-lived 1981 album Congo Lament, but this is the first time the tracks were brought together for the first time. Half of the material features a quartet with Quebec on tenor, Sonny Clark on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – and the other half feature a larger group with Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Green added in. Overall, the larger group titles are a lot harder grooving than some of Quebec's other work – especially the titles "Congo Lament" and "Que's Pill". Other tracks have a nice mellow easy feel, with great gutsy tenor work from the master! Titles include "Easy Living", "Nancy", and "I've Got A Crush On You". Heavy soul from Ike Quebec – one of Blue Note's greatest players of the 78 era in the 40s, stepping out here on one of his brilliant comeback sets from the early 60s! The set features Ike blowing in an all soul jazz mode – working with a quartet that includes some great work from organist Freddie Roach – swinging here in a great straight ahead mode, and really pushing Ike to lay out some of the best solos of his later Blue Note years. There's a few tracks on the set that step out in a tight modal jazz groove – organ vamping as Ike blows away – and titles include "Heavy Soul", "Que's Dilemma", "Acquitted", and a very spooky version of "Nature Boy". One of the few Blue Note albums with a bossa groove – and a great one too! The record features soulful tenor star Ike Quebec blowing in front of Brazilian-styled rhythms laid out by a combo that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, and a duo of Latin percussionists! Willie Bobo plays drums on the session, and the cuts have a short groovy feel, with a sax-heavy lead, in a similar style to Stan Getz's bossa work on Verve – but much more soulful overall, and with a nicely rougher feel on the rhythms. Really great stuff, and with titles that include "Loie", "Goin Home", "Favela", "Blue Samba", and "Shu Shu". LP, Vinyl record album

A killer album that stands as a wonderful complement to Ike Quebec's classic LP sessions for Blue Note – and a set that's even more noteworthy for a rare early appearance of keyboardist Earl Van Dyke! Earl's best known for later famous work at Motown – but here, he plays some great mellow Hammond – really laying back nicely, alongside Quebec's soulful tenor – in a group that also features Willie Jones on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Wilbert Hogan on drums. The tunes here were all originally recorded as potential singles for Quebec, but most weren't issued by Blue Note at the time – and they're pulled together here as a really well-crafted album that's essential listening if you're a fan of the tremendous tenorist! Moody late night tenor musings by one of Blue Note's greatest talents of the early 60s! The album's a classic through and through – and the tenor of the mighty Ike Quebec is set up nicely in a solid quartet with Grant Green on guitar, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's no piano on the album, which really opens things up a lot, and lets the guitar/tenor lines get all snakey and introspective – with just the right dose of "blue" and "sentimental" to sweeten things up without getting all gooey! Although Grant Green has been getting a lot of attention lately for his heavy-duty funk work of the late 60s, it's the subtly beautiful work of the early 60's that first caught our attention years ago. From the start of his young career, Green was an amazing player who had developed a unique single-note approach to soloing that was positively riveting. And while his appearances on other Blue Note albums were filled with a heavy soul jazz sound that had Green playing next to organ and tenor, material like this gives you a perfect chance to hear how well he could swing a group on his own, with little other accompaniment than a tight rhythm section, and some soulful piano from Sonny Clark. None of this material was issued at the time. Includes material that appeared on the later albums Gooden's Corner, Oleo, Born To Be Blue, and Nigeria – plus tracks from The World Of Jazz Guitar, and Blue & Sentimental by Ike Quebec. CD

A very nice groover from Jimmy – and a session that was recorded earlier, but not issued by Blue Note until the end of the 60s. The format is hard-wailing sextet – with Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Ike Quebec on tenor, and Jackie McLean on alto. Jimmy's usual trio at the time holds the fort on the rhythm department, and all players groove very nicely on a set of 4 long tracks that includes "Big Fat Mama", "Plain Talk", and "Time After Time". The Latin side of Blue Note Records – and the Brazilian one, too – served up here in a series that brought together classic work from the label in a special sort of groove – tunes that are maybe more influenced by south of the border rhythms than you'd expect from the soul jazz and hardbop artists who originally made the records! There's a bit of bossa here, but the rhythms open up into a fair bit more, too – and it's great to hear the difference in these musicians as they change things up from straighter bop modes, and use the new grooves to open up their solos and rework their phrasing too! A sharp groover from Willis Jackson! Tough to find on wax, this early 60's session takes Willis' mean tenor sound, and adds a nice bossa groove to it – in a style that's similar to Ike Quebec's Samba Soul LP. There's lots of extra percussion, thanks to Montego Joe and Juan Amalbert of the Latin Jazz Quintet, and Kenny Burrell lays down some sprightly guitar that provides a nice counterpoint to Willis' deep deep tenor. 2 of the more unusual Illinois Jacquet sessions for Argo – back to back on one CD! On Bosses Of The Ballad, Jacquet's gutsy tenor sound is restrained a bit in a beautiful batch of Cole Porter ballads, played with accompaniment by a small orchestra of woodwinds and strings. Benny Golson and Tom McIntosh did the arrangements, so the material's pretty hip – and Illinois does a great job of opening these tracks up in the same way that someone like Ike Quebec would – lustily blowing with a sense of tone and phrasing that makes even simple moments sparkle with understated brilliance! The album's an under-acknowledged Argo session, and one with a beautiful late night feel – tracks that include "I Love You", "Do I Love You", "Begin The Beguine", "Get Out Of Town", and "Everytime We Say Goodbye". Spectrum is even better, a pretty darn great little album from Jacquet – not his classic work, sure, but a wonderful session with some really great Argo/Cadet aspects! Side one features backing by a largeish group – arranged and led by Bert Keyes, and featuring Billy Butler and Eric Gale on guitars, Buddy Lucas on tenor, and an overall sound that's swinging, 60s, and very groovy. Side two features a hip soul jazz combo, with Russell Jacquet on trumpet and Patti Brown on piano – plus Candido on congas, kicking it up nicely underneath! Tracks are short and catchy, in a soul jazz mode that makes good use of Jacquet's tone – and titles include "Spanish Boots", "Elsie", "Now & Then", "Blue Horizon", "Big Music", and "Black Foot". CD

A great little album from Kenny Burrell – one that has Ray Barretto's congas on most cuts, giving the album a similar Latiny feel to Kenny's classic Midnight Blue album on Blue Note! The Latin undercurrent hits both New York and bossa-styled modes – a great setting for Burrell's thin, snakey lines on guitar – and also a surprisingly great showcase for the tenor of Coleman Hawkins, which really opens up nicely in this setting – in ways that are a bit like his own bossa date for Impulse, or the sound of Ike Quebec's Soul Samba album! Rhythm is by Tommy Flanagan on piano, Major Holley on bass, and Eddie Locke on drums – and titles include "Tres Talbras", "Montono Blues", "Guilty", "No More", and "It's Getting Dark". CD
