CotoneteInside Outside – First EP Series Vol 1 ... 12-inch
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2017. New Copy ... $19.99
A jazzy instrumental with a very classic vibe – served up with some especially nice keyboard work from Florian Pellissier – who you might know from records issued under his own name! "Inside Outside" owes a fair bit to 70s funky jazz for inspiration – but it's also got a crackling sort of rhythm approach – played live, but maybe inherited a bit from the broken beat generation – which gives the music an urgently current vibe. Side one features the long core track of the tune – originally written by MPS legend Joanne Grauer – and side two features two Phil Asher/Restless Soul reworks. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Liquid LiquidOptimo/Cavern/Scraper/Out ... 12-inch
99 Records/Superior Viaduct, 1983. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $13.99
Seminal work from Liquid Liquid – one of the coolest, funkiest groups on the New York scene at the start of the 80s! The approach here is a blistering blend of different percussion modes – from batucada jamming to funky drums – all tied together with these basslines that really make the whole thing vibrated with a massive sound! The music's a bit in the spirit of ESG – who also recorded for the same label at the time – but is also a lot more adventurous, and played with even more tightness too. Titles include the wicked cut "Cavern", which was the massive sample for the classic hip hop track "White Lines" – and other titles include "Scraper", "Optimo", and "Out". 12-inch, Vinyl record

ChangeIt's A Girl's Affair/Searching (new disco mixes by Mike Maurro) (180 gram pressing) ... 12-inch
RFC/Groove Line Records (UK), 1980. New Copy (pic cover)... $13.99
Two classic tracks from Change – each of which features the group with some of their best singers ever, both presented here in new funky mixes by Mike Maurro! "A Girl's Affair" has Jocelyn Brown in the lead – wonderful vocals for the snapping, captivating groove of the tune – lots of lean work on bass amidst the percussion and keyboards – while Brown sends the whole thing home with plenty of soul! "Searchin" is one of the catchiest cuts that Change ever recorded – a tune that has the mighty Luther Vandross on vocals, but singing in a way that's quite different than his later albums to come – a mighty nice match for the percolating groove of the song! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Indian OceanSchool Bell Treehouse/Tree House Schoolbell (parts 1 & 2) ... 12-inch
Sleeping Bag/Get On Down, 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 14.98
One of the most offbeat 12" singles to ever come from the hands of Arthur Russell – and that's saying a lot, given some of his other grooves! The approach here is much more experimental than some of Russell's other projects for Sleeping Bag Records – as the main track builds slowly from a mix of electronic rhythms and percussion, layered with deep sounds that really match the groove – but at a pace that's dark and moody, although building with tribal energy as things move on! There's a pan-global, past/future vibe going on here – one that reminds us how revolutionary Russell was at the time, and what a huge inspiration he was to later giants of the post-house, post-club global scene. Over 20 minutes of music between the two sides – more like a short album instead of a 12" single! 12-inch, Vinyl record
