✨✧ Leonard RosenmanFantastic Voyage – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest soundtracks ever from Leonard Rosenman – and a key example of his strong talent for mixing acoustic instrumentation with very offbeat and eerie electronics! Rosenman had offered up this blend on other important science soundtracks of the 60s – but probably hit his apex with this gem – penned for mid 60s film about a bunch of scientists who shrink down, and take a trip inside the human body! The electronics are sublime – used in these stark, sharp ways that are very compelling, and downright evil in nature – providing a real contrast to some of the warmer woodwind touches in the orchestrations, even when they try to echo the electric energy. The whole thing's pretty darn great – a lot bleaker musically than the actual film – and titles include "Proteus Moving Through Sac", "Group Leaves", "The Proteus", "The Chart", "Pulmonary Artery", "Get The Laser", and "The Human Brain". VariousWinter Of Discontent – Presented By Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 20.99
A stunning selection of tracks from a moment when things really got interesting on the UK scene – when the straighter guitar lines of early punk gave way to more unfamiliar instrumentation, unusual production, and offbeat rhythms – yet almost always with a really raw, stripped-down feel – thanks to the indie placement of most of these cuts! Some of the material is work that would later become known as post-punk, and referenced as a huge influence on later groups – but as with most Bob Stanley/Pete Wiggs collections, there's something here that goes way past the ordinary – as the set list is filled with all these great twists and turns, and some wonderful surprises that come from cuts that were issued on some of the much smaller labels of the period, compared to bigger indies like Rough Trade or Fast Product. The music's got a raw, experimental edge throughout – and Stanley and Wiggs provide plenty of illuminating notes – to support this package of 24 tracks that includes "Somebody" by Frankie's Crew, "Small Hours" by Karl's Empty Body, "Work" by Blue Orchids, "Violence Grows" by Fatal Microbes, "Where Were You" by The Mekons, "The Terraplane Fixation" by Animals & Men, "Bored Housewives" by Androids Of Mu, "Can't Cheat Karma" by Zounds, "No Forgetting" by Manchester Mekon, "Drink Problem" by Thin Yoghurts, "The Sideways Man" by The Digital Dinosaurs, "Different Story" by Tarzan, "Production Line" by The Door & The Window, and "The Window's Broken" by Human Cabbages. ✨✧ Human ExpressionLove At a Psychedelic Velocity ... LP
Mississippi, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Human Expression – a group with this moody, dark quality that's completely mindblowing, especially given their young years at the time of these recordings! The music certainly falls into the garagey sounds of the Sunset Strip scene at the time – but there's also a quality here that really sets these guys apart – this stark, bracing vibe that's hinted at in some of the really bleak song titles of their tunes, and which comes through strongly in the mix of offbeat vocalizations, unusual guitar tunings, and really raw production throughout! Tracks include "Reading Your Will", "Love At Psychedelic Velocity", "Every Night", "Cam Me Down", "Sweet Child Of Nothingness", "I Told Her", "Return Nevermore", "Judgement Of Rejection", "I Don't Need Nobody", "Room Of Shadows", "Who Is Burning", and "Outside Of It All". Jesse DavisLive At Smalls ... CD
Smalls Live, 2012. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
One of the best albums in years from altoist Jesse Davis – recorded in a relaxed, open-ended style that really unlocks some new magic in his horn! Davis' studio records are all quite nice, but this live date really takes him to places we've never heard before – a really old school exploration of alto modes that brings us back to Stitt or Criss, and shows a long-winded creativity we hardly knew that Jesse had. The rhythm section really helps the feel of the record, too – with a lot of humanity in the piano of Spike Wilner, mixed with the impeccable work of Peter Washington on bass and Billy Drummond on drums. Ryan Kisor's trumpet adds one more horn to the mix – and titles include "I'll Close My Eyes", "Piece Of The Apple", "Pray Thee/Beyond The Storm", "Journey From The Lighthouse", and "Body & Soul". CD

✨✧ Chuck JacksonMr Everything ... LP
Wand, 1965. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Chuck Jackson may be Mr Everything in the title – but there's one thing he does especially well on this classic 60s album – deliver a rock-solid sort of heartbreaking soul – the sort that few others could touch at the time! Jackson often doesn't get his due in the history books these days – but records like these were landmark moments of pride, power, and open male emotion – of the sort that went onto inform generations of soul music to come – and help future artists find their way, guided by the emotional frankness of Jackson's approach! Backings are carefully balanced – tight, but never too polished to overwhelm Chuck's vocals – which soar out with a raw power that blows away Sam Cooke or some of Jackson's other contemporaries. Titles include "D-5", "I Need You", "Human", "I'm Your Man", "Tears Of Joy", and "Somebody New". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing. Vinyl has a mark that plays with a click during the last 3 tracks on both sides. Cover has minimal wear.)

✨✧ Eddie Lockjaw DavisHeavy Hitter ... CD
Muse/Savoy, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A Heavy Hitter from tenorist Eddie Lockjaw Davis – recorded a bit late in his career, but with a sound that's mighty nice – and every bit as great as some of his 60s recordings for Prestige! The combo's small, swinging, and soulful – Albert Dailey on piano, George Duvivier on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – coming together with a perfect punch that makes Davis sound better than he'd sounded in years – blowing with that raspy, human tone that nobody else did so well – grabbing us from the get-go, even on familiar tunes! Titles include "Comin Home Baby", "Jim Dog", "Just One Of Those Things", and "When Your Lover Has Gone". CD

✨✧ Jacques BrelIntegrale Jacques Brel Et Ses Interpretes 1953 to 1962 (6CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 6CDs ... Out Of Stock
A huge collection of work – one that not only gets at the brilliance of the young Jacques Brel as a singer on the Francophone scene, but which also showcases his tremendous talent for penning fresh and original songs – a number of which are served up here in versions by other singers of the time! There's something really special about a Jacques Brel tune – as he cuts to the heart of humanity, exposing dreams, follies, fears, and sadness with a mix of wit and emotion – a balance that nobody else has been able to touch this well – and which also carries over, even when another singer might be handling his songs! The first 4CDs of the set bring together key early recordings by Brel – 89 tracks from his early years on Barclay. And the remaining 2CDs offer up key interpretations of his tunes – another 45 titles, performed by artists who include Juliette Greco, Marc E Odile, Denise Andre, Yves Montand, Jacqueline Nero, Vera Gran, Colette Chevrot, Pia Colombo, Yvette Giraud, Les Riff, and many others – including a fair bit of artists who are not represented well in the world of reissues! ✨✧ George Jones & Tammy WynetteMe & The First Lady/We're Gonna Hold On/Golden Ring ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of fantastic duet albums from this legendary team – all presented in a single set! Me & The First Lady is the second record to pair the incredible vocals of George Jones and Tammy Wynette – and it also marks a real shift in the careers of both musicians – a rise to the more introspective, mature style that Jones would explore very strongly on his Columbia sides to come! Both singers were more upbeat in the 60s, and maybe had some more gimmicks to some of their songs – yet here, they come together in this very sophisticated style that's mindblowing – all put together with superb Billy Sherrill production. Titles include "A Lovely Place To Cry", "We Believe In Each Other", "The Great Divide", "The Ceremony", "We're Gonna Try To Get Along", "Lovin You Is Worth It", and "It's Been A Beautiful Life". We're Gonna Hold On is a set that's maybe marking some of the personal rift between George Jones and Tammy Wynette in its title – yet a record that still has a wonderfully unified feel between two of the most amazing voices in country music! The match of styles, moods, and moments is superb – way different than just the sort of playful male/female country that was forged in years past – and a real standard-setting performance that includes "The Jet Set", "We're Gonna Hold On", "Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms", "That Man Of Mine", "If Loving You Starts Hurting Me", and "The Woman Loves Me Right". Golden Ring is a stunning record from the duo of George Jones and Tammy Wynette – a set that could be easily written off as a reflection of their shaky relationship – yet instead the kind of material that has the pair continuing to plumb emotive and vocal depths that few other country singers could ever hope to touch! The album works wonderfully as a unified whole – a testament to the strengths and struggles of human relationships, delivered by two singers who had plenty of life under their belts by the time of the session – and who still know how to come together on their vocals in a way that's unlike anyone else before, then, or since. Titles include "Golden Ring", "Keep The Change", "Near You", "Even The Bad Times Are Good", "Did You Ever", "Tattletale Eyes", "Cryin Time", and "If You Don't Somebody Else Will". CD

RockwellSomebody's Watching Me ... LP
Motown, 1983. Very Good+ ... $5.99 7.99
One of the strangest acts to come from Motown in the early 80s – and almost more of a new wave record than a soul one! The standout hit here is the title track "Somebody's Watching Me" – an odd electro tune that has Rockwell speaking/singing these paranoid lyrics with a vague British accent – but which has Michael Jackson coming in on the chorus to warm up the tune! Sadly, Michael's gone for the rest of the record – so Rockwell takes center stage with tunes that have a soul-based take on styles heard more familiarly by Human League or Ultravox at the time – and which display the real Anglophile bent in American pop at the time. Still, there's a few nice electro moments – and titles include "Obscene Phone Caller", "Change Your Ways", "Runaway", "Wasting Time", and "Knife". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eric GaleGinseng Woman/Multiplication ... CD
Columbia, 1977/1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 fusion classics from guitarist Eric Gale – back to back on one CD! Ginseng Woman is wonderfully strong effort from Gale – a player who'd done countless studio work on fusion sessions in the 70s, but who never really broke that strongly as a leader until this set! Gale's tone here is nicely compressed, but still has a warmth that comes from his use of a hollow-body – smooth enough to slide alongside the electric Bob James production, but with enough humanity to allow Gale's spirit to shine through nicely. Richard Tee plays organ on the set, some tracks have backing vocals, and the overall sound is sort of post-CTI, or Kudu-esque. Titles include "Red Ground", "Ginseng Woman", "Derabbit", "East End, West End", and "Sara Smile". Multiplication re-unites Gale with Bob James – and hits a groove that's slightly mellower at times, almost like James' own work from the period – but which also shows a bit of a tighter funk approach on the best cuts too. Titles include "Gypsy Jello", "Morning Glory", "Oh Mary Don't You Weep", "Thumper", and "Multiplication". CD

✨✧ ThorKeep The Dogs Away ... LP
Midsong, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A notorious, and we'll admit it, super catchy blast of late 70s glam metal – led by a Candadian bodybuilder posing as the Norse thunder god! Subtlety is just not a thing in Thor's world – the title track "Keep The Dogs Away" literally has a chorus of barking dogs alongside the human vocals – and that's a good thing. Heavy guitars and sing along-ready choruses galore, rough and simple for sure, but with a bright production that's as shiny and well-oiled as Jon Mikl Thor's pectoral muscles. Goofy and SO much fun! Other tracks include "Military Matters", "Sleeping Giant", "Catch A Tiger", "Super Hero", "Wasted", "Rosie" and "Thunder". LP, Vinyl record album
