The music is filled with all sorts of weird sounds and production elements – almost taking the experiments of the musique concrete generation, and then mixing them with groovier, more upbeat sounds from the early 70s Italian scene – so that things might be jazzy one minute, funky the next, and haunting after that – all at a level that makes the whole thing one of the tip top Italian library gems of the period! A sweet little set that definitely earns its "antico e moderno" title – as it seems to effortlessly blend together musical modes from a variety of different eras, but all with an ultra hip Italian sound library style! Some cuts have these really wonderful electronics, but of the funkiest sort – almost post-Perry Kingsley in the way fuzzy moog lines and tight rhythms come together – then balanced by some older musical modes on more acoustic instrumentation and reeds, although even these numbers have a nicely playful vibe that you wouldn't expect! Overall, there's probably a lot more "moderno" than "antico" – especially as the set moves on – and the whole thing's got more than enough sweet keyboard and analogue electronics to please any fan of groovy sound library sets. Wonderfully experimental music from Ennio Morricone – even darker at times than some of his famous horror soundtracks – and a record that was only pressed up in an initial small sound library run! The music has an offbeat blend of string elements, percussion, and other darker tones – recorded with some processing and unusual production touches – at a level that's very similar to Morricone's music with Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, who also make an appearance on the set! Most tracks have this sort of progression of elements – a quality that's not directly rhythmic, but which creates a core energy that holds the more obtuse elements together – and titles include "Controfase", "Tempo", "Con Ferma Ostinazione", "Follia", and "Degenerazione". A really cool album of moody keyboard work from Shiegeo Sekito – a set that's maybe a bit sound library, but also just groovy instrumental – and which has Sekito working his way through a host of Yamaha keyboards, with a sound that's pretty ethereal and eerie overall! In contrast to a Fender Rhodes record of the time, this one's got leaner tones – almost flute-like at points, and augmented occasionally by an early Roland synth – which makes for a spacey vibe that's a real surprise, especially in contrast to the image on the cover! Most of the tunes take off from classical themes by Mozart, Bach, Chopin, and others – but as in a moog project of this nature, the end result is something very different entirely – much hipper, groovier, and with a sweet 70s vibe! Sweet funky keyboards from the Japanese scene – a set recorded by Shigeo Sekito as part of an ultra hi-fidelity series in the 70s, but done with a lean groove that's much more like some of the late 60s instrumental gems we love so much! Shigeo moves between electric piano, organ, and some moogier moments – and the backing is spare, but with a nice groove on most cuts – including percussion that helps the tunes skip along in a bossa-styled movement at times! Titles include very cool versions of "Maiden Voyage", "For Heaven's Sake", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Summertime", "Wives & Lovers", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "Just Met A Strawberry Love". Two side-long improvised tracks – recorded in a spacious concert hall in Tokyo, and featuring the drums and percussion of Masahiko Togashi alongside some very inventive work on guitar from Masayuki Takayanagi! Togashi is very different than the usual jazz drummer – and even when working the kit, has this way of moving forward, then stopping, moving forward, then turning – almost as if he's trying to be as a-rhythmic as possible! Takayanagi's guitar is a great accompaniment in this mood – as he plays with these unusual sonic elements – almost in the school of Derek Bailey or Fred Frith, but even more tentative than both of them – really matching the quality of the drums, at a level that makes for extremely sensitive improvisation throughout. Killer cop/crime music from the Italian scene of the 70s – a famous genre soundtrack from composer Armando Trovajoli, who's usually known for his work in warmer, sexier styles! The grooves here are right up there with the best that Italy has to offer from the time – full, jazzy backings that often have a bit of keyboards or guitars amidst the larger horns – and rhythms that manage to sound tightly compressed, despite the larger arrangements – in ways that help keep things sounding nice and lean. Trovajoli adds in isolated instruments at the best moments – particularly some woodwind bits that snake along with warmly melodic touches, or keyboards used in spare and subtle ways – and each track seems to offer up a fresh approach to the sound, making for a well-balanced batch of tracks that's far from cliche! A creepy movie, but a wonderful soundtrack – filled with sweet touches and breezy melodies that recall the best work of the Morricone generation! The score here is penned by Fiorenzo Carpi, but conducted by Bruno Nicolai in a way that would have made Morricone proud – a style that often uses lightly floating instrumentation – gliding and dancing with nice bits of harpsichord, echoey piano, and other sounds that hang suspended in air to be slightly jostled by occasional larger string passages. Edda Dell'Orso contributes a bit of spooky wordless vocals, and there's a main theme that runs through the CD that's especially beautiful – very dreamy and bossa-like! itles include "Mariale", "Garden Party", "Ultimi Passi", "Beni Perduti", "Pelle Di Luna", "Equinozio", "La Vittima", and "Corteo Magico". A rare later set on the Italian Flipper sound library label – much later than most of the 70s funk classics we know from Flipper, and a record that's equally groovy in its own sort of way! There's definitely plenty of the sax promised in the title – blown with a sharper edge than most other 80s fusion-inspired records, which is a nice balance to the more electric rhythms that make up most of the tracks – and the more digital-styled sound that can come from other instruments, like the piano! We're not sure who the saxophonist is, but they do a great job in the lead – on cuts that include "Lunch & Dinner", "First Class", "Walking On Air", "Night With Champagne", "Dance Power", "Dawning", and "Flowers". Sweet Japanese fusion from saxophonist Toshiyuki Honda – grooving with a tight, smooth, and soulful feel that matches the best of the genre from the time – a style that really makes the record a classic from this golden era of Japanese fusion! The album's got large R&B-inspired funky jazz arrangements from Chikara Ueda, and features some nice keyboard work by Larry Williams – plus a soulful vocal from Pauline Wilson on the album's take on "Havana Candy". Sublime sound library work from Lesiman – one of the more obscure talents of the 70s scene, and one who really had an ear for mixing more dramatic and experimental elements with some mighty nice grooves! Lesiman, aka Paolo Renosto, was at one time a member of Gruppo d'Improvvisazione – and he uses his experience in that ensemble to create some really wild sounds at times, but also brings things back to groovier territory too – all with the sense of tension in the music you'd expect from the title! There's some especially nice metallic elements on the record at times – oddly-tuned vibes and offbeat piano – on titles that include "Panico", "Insidia", "Restless", "Reticolato", "Incubo Di Prigionia", "Cupa Atmosfera", "Sbarramento", and "Confine". One of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from Italian pianist Oscar Rocchi – a set that still holds onto some of the modern elements of his music, but which also shows a warmly lyrical side as well! That latter quality really comes through strongly in the flute lines of Hugo Heredia – which grace about half the record, and have this flowing brilliance that really stands out – a quality that's nicely balanced with some harder trumpet lines from Sergio Fanni, who plays here with the same depth of soul as Heredia! Hugo also blows a bit of tenor on the album, too – creating a crackling energy when he does – but it's also clear that Rocchi's the real star of the show, with his bold command of the piano, his strong vision as a leader, and his great writing on all the album's original tracks. A wonderful sound library set from Piero Umiliani, and one that's overflowing with contributions from some mighty hip jazz musicians on the Italian scene of the 70s – including Enrico Pieranunzi on both electric and acoustic piano, Oscar Valdambrini on trumpet, Dino Piana on trombone, and Bruno Tommaso on bass – all working with very cool organ and moog from Piero himself! There's flute on many tracks – played by both S Genovese and N Rapicavoli, both players we don't know at all – and the instrument is often used in these cool, compressed ways that are mighty nice – and which make a stunning sonic counterpart to the other instrumentation, especially when Umiliani turns up some of the odd effects in the production!
