Herman Kelly & LifePercussion Explosion! ... LP
Alston, 1978. Good+ ... $11.99
The percussion-heavy soul gem from Herman Kelly & Life – recorded in both Brazil & Miami – and awash with killer drum work all the way through! The album's a key part of the Miami sound especially – and really shows the way that city's 70s funk scene used congas heavily – really filling up the middle of a cut with even more energy than usual! The album's best known for the classic sample cut "Dance to the Drummer's Beat" – which is offered up here in a nice extended version, with a long percussion break that makes it even tastier than usual – and the record's also got a few other uptempo cuts like "Who's the Funky DJ?" and "Do The Handbone" – plus the tracks "Time After Time", "A Refreshing Love", and "Share Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has a cut corner and some wear. Vinyl plays with some clicks and crackles.)

VariousTK Records Story Vol 1 ... CD
Gold Legion, Late 70s. New Copy ... $11.99
A cool collection of grooves from the legendary TK Records label – and one that goes way past the obvious hits that topped the charts back in the 70s! The package is less the overall story of TK, than it is a great reminder that there's some really funky nuggets lurking deep in the label's mighty catalog – killer tunes that show that the Miami club sound of the late 70s was firmly rooted in funk and deep soul of the earlier part of the decade – at a level that still stayed pretty funky, even well into the disco generation! There's some great gems here – and titles include "Lady Fingers" by Tony Middleton, "Plato's Retreat" by Joe Thomas, "Funk Reaction" by Lonnie Smith, "Harlem Nocturne" by Wildflower, "Don't Turn Away" by Midnite Flite, "Star Cruiser" by Gregg Diamond, "Funk Machine" by Funk Machine, "Hey Sexy Dancer" by Rocky Mizell, "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly & Life, and "Do What You Wanna Do" by T Connection. VariousUltimate Breaks & Beats Vol 3 & 4 ... CD
Street Beat, 1980s. Used ... $9.99
Nice one! The Ultimate B & B series needs no introduction from us, and now it's becoming available on CD, with the volumes 3 & 4 gathered together on one disc! Volume 3's one of the best-remembered of the Ultimate Breaks & Beats titles, the one with the spaceman with a mohawk and a boom box on the cover – a sublime assortment of funky tracks, many of which were crucial to the early sound of hip hop! As usual, several of the tracks have an edit that extends the break: "Bongo Rock" by the Incredible Bongo Band, "Pussy Footer" by Jackie Robinson, "Different Strokes" by Syl Johnson, "I Know You Got Soul" by Bobby Byrd and "I Think I'd Do It" by Z.Z. Hill, plus the unedited versions of "Got To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn, "Apache" by the Incredible Bongo Band , "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly & Life, "Give It To You" by UPP, "Sing Sing" by Gaz, "Breakthrough" by Isaac Hayes, "Looking Out My Window" by Tom Jones and "Funky Music Is The Thing" by the Dynamic Corvettes.
