An extremely ambitious work by
Helen Merrill – an album of tracks recorded to unlock her Croatian heritage, a factor that was always suppressed in her music, but which blossoms here under expansive arrangements that link both jazz and folkloric traditions! The recording is a recent one, but it's got the feel of some of our favorite European projects of this nature from the 70s – taking jazz solo work from players that include Roland Hanna, Gil Goldstein, and Steve Lacy, forging it with arrangements by Torrie Zito, and using it to create worlds of sound for
Helen's unique voice. The album's got an incredibly evocative feel, and it's proof that
Merrill is far more than just a jazz singer – truly an artist of the voice, with a style that's evolved tremendously over the course of decades! Titles include "Tanac", "La Paloma", "My Father", "Long Long Ago", "Kirje", "Lost In The Stars", "Among My Souvenirs", and "Nobody Knows".
