Helen MerrillDream Of You ... CD
EmArcy/Universal (Korea), 1956. Used ... $8.99
Dream Of You is one of Helen's best from the 50s, thanks to some great arrangements from Gil Evans! Evans' young and modern talents are a perfect fit for Helen's sadly icy vocals on the set – taking her to new places never reached on some other sessions that were trying for a warmer, sweeter sound. The tunes are all well chosen, too – and the record features a great reading of "Where Flamingos Fly", plus "I'm A Fool To Want You", "I've Never Seen", "He Was Too Good To Me", "By Myself", and "Troubled Waters". CD

Helen MerrillHelen Merrill In Tokyo ... CD
King (Japan), 1963. Used ... $24.99
A rare Japanese session from vocalist Helen Merrill – one of a few key 60s recordings she cut on the Tokyo scene, after initial fame in the US! The album features a great small group arranged by drummer Takeshi Inomata, played by a combo that includes alto, baritone, and trumpet – all used in a cool and laidback mode that resonates nicely with Merrill's more familiar 50s sides on Mercury – but which also stretches out more, too – not as "cool", and with a sense of inflection that's mighty nice. Helen's in great form vocally – often singing in that almost-effortless mode that we love in her classic work – and titles include "It Never Entered My Mind", "Bewitched", "You Do Something To Me", "Teach Me Tonight", "Good Morning Heartache", and "My Favorite Things". Helen Merrill & Stan GetzJust Friends ... CD
EmArcy/Universal (Japan), 1989. Used ... $24.99
A really great later effort from Helen Merrill – one recorded in Paris at the end of the 80s with some excellent tenor sax work from Stan Getz! The mode of the record is similar to other Merrill records from the time – spare, gentle, and moody – sometimes threatening to lapse into its own blueness, but wonderfully redeemed by Stan's solo lines – which push a boldness and raspy edge into the tunes that really livens things up. The album's a great demonstration of the Getz power on a vocal session – a sound that never overtakes the presence of the singer, but really brings in something fresh – a voice of its own that helps redefine the tunes and create some of the most exciting moments on the record. Other players include Joachim Kuhn and Torrie Zito on piano, JF Jenny-Clark on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – and titles include "Music Makers", "Cavatina", "It's Not Easy Being Green", "Yesterdays", "If You Go Away", and "Just Friends". CD

✨✧ Helen MerrillArtistry Of Helen Merrill ... CD
Mainstream/Solid (Japan), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from singer Helen Merrill – and quite an obscure one as well! The set was recorded after Helen's initial burst to fame on the Mercury label in the 50s – and has her taking on a more laidback, more open-minded approach here in a very hip setting that includes a fair bit of work from guitarist Charlie Byrd – fresh off his fame of recording with Stan Getz, and able to bring some of his unique phrasing to the record in a really great way! The material is nicely varied – different than what Merrill would have recorded in the previous decade – and definitely indicates the step into hipper territory that some of the rising vocalists of the 60s, such as Nina Simone or Oscar Brown Jr, were taking at the time. Other musicians include Jimmy Giuffre on clarinet, Hal McKusick on flute, and Jimmy Raney on second guitar – and titles include "The River", "Minha Rocca", "Forbidden Games", "John Anderson My Love", "Cannetella", "Itsuki No Komoriuta", "Quiet Nights", and "Careless Love". CD

Mercury (Japan), Late 50s/1985. Used 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Very nice 4 CD set that includes all of the classic vocal recordings cut by Helen Merrill for Mercury in the late 50s. There's way too much to mention here, but the set's got some great jazz backing by the likes of Clifford Brown, Johnny Richards, and Gil Evans – plus some more orchestral work by Hal Mooney. CD

✨✧ Helen MerrillImagination ... CD
Lob (Japan), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most obscure sessions in the long career of jazz singer Helen Merrill – a vocalist who's got a reputation for cutting plenty of obscure sessions around the globe! This date features a mature Merrill sounding wonderful – recording in a nicely understated setting for a Japanese label, with backing from a trio that features Kosei Uchida on piano, Hideo Kawahara on bass, and Tim Horner on drums. As on some of Merrill's other magical records, the songs here are less important than the interpretation – as she works a very personal sort of spell on tunes that include "Imagination", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "While We're Young", "Falling In Love With Love", and "All Blues/St Louis Blues". The set also features trio instrumentals "Milestones", "Bossa Nouveau", and "Put Your Little Foot Right Out". CD
(1983 Japanese pressing.)

✨✧ Helen Merrill & Piero UmilianiParole E Musica ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A strange and obscure session that has the cool jazz vocals of American singer Helen Merrill backed by a small Italian combo led by soundtrack composer Piero Umiliani – a wonderful mix that really makes the album an unusual one for Helen! The music was originally recorded for a TV program in Italy, and each track is preceded by an Italian voice, reciting Italian versions of the lyrics over spare musical backing – then Merrill's voice comes in with a bigger jazz group, singing each track in English – a very nice level of presentation! And although the whole thing sounds crazy, it actually works well – and gives the album a compelling edge and kind of a sexy late-night quality – with great instrumentation that includes flute from Gino Marinacci and guitar from Enzo Grillini. Tracks include "Solitude", "Everything Happens To Me", "Night & Day", "Why Don't You Do Right", and "Willow Weep For Me". CD

✨✧ Helen MerrillJelena Ana Milcetic aka Helen Merrill ... CD
Gitanes/Verve (France), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
An extremely ambitious work by Helen Merrill – an album of tracks recorded to unlock her Croatian heritage, a factor that was always suppressed in her music, but which blossoms here under expansive arrangements that link both jazz and folkloric traditions! The recording is a recent one, but it's got the feel of some of our favorite European projects of this nature from the 70s – taking jazz solo work from players that include Roland Hanna, Gil Goldstein, and Steve Lacy, forging it with arrangements by Torrie Zito, and using it to create worlds of sound for Helen's unique voice. The album's got an incredibly evocative feel, and it's proof that Merrill is far more than just a jazz singer – truly an artist of the voice, with a style that's evolved tremendously over the course of decades! Titles include "Tanac", "La Paloma", "My Father", "Long Long Ago", "Kirje", "Lost In The Stars", "Among My Souvenirs", and "Nobody Knows". CD
