Steam HeatAustin Funk ... CD
Fable, 1975. Used ... $9.99
A legendary album from the Texas scene of the 70s – exactly the kind of set that helps the city of Austin live up to its massive reputation for music! The group's got a wonderful blend of jazz, soul, and funk – a unique blend that reminds us of our favorite funky Fantasy Records sides from the Bay Area scene, but which is even more special here as a standout set from Austin. Like some of the best ensemble funk sets of the 70s, the groove's choppy one minute, jazzy the next – really drawing from the many spirits that inhabit the 8-piece lineup, in ways that really let everyone's talents sparkle. Drums are nice and tight, and the keyboard and saxophone work is wonderful too – and titles include "Ghetto Tool", "Groove Awhile", "Keep Your Eyes On The Merchandise", "Funk N Roll", "Frozen Tundra Lady", and "Radiator". ✨✧ Mongo SantamariaMontreux Heat ... CD
Pablo, 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Late Mongo – but great Mongo! The CD features work recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 – a wonderful jazz-based performance that was never issued at the time! Tracks are long and very open – stretching out with a soulful majesty that goes beyond even Mongo's excellent jazz sides for the Vaya label at the end of the 70s. Milton Hamilton plays some great electric piano on the tracks – and the tunes also have some excellent work on soprano sax, tenor, and flute by Doug Harris, a player we know little about, but who we really love on this set! Dizzy Gillespie and Toots Thielemans join in on one track, but the core group is the real power of the the album – grooving hard in a mix of jazz, Latin, and a slight bit of funk – served up on long tracks that include "Para Ti", "Come Candela", "Sofrito", "Pajaro Cantor", "Havana", and "Amanecer". BloodstoneParty ... CD
T Neck/FTG, 1984. Used ... $9.99
One of Bloodstone's great groovers from later years – work that has a very different feel than the group's fragile harmony soul of the 70s, and which has them taking off into a much more confident sound! Production is by McKinley Jackson, and the album's a mix of a few funky 80s groove numbers with some even better mellower tracks – tunes that glide along in a rich production mode, and showcase the maturing vocals of the group wonderfully. Titles include the sweet stepper "Instant Love", a really great spacey soul track – plus "It Feels So Good", "Why Be The First One Home", "Contagious", "Feel The Heat", and "Bloodstone's Party". CD

Moonfires (Alex Puddu)Black Sugar ... CD
Al Dente (France), 2015. Used ... $14.99
A great new showcase for the music of Alex Puddu – the contemporary groover who's given us some wonderful music over the years – including his famous Golden Age Of Danish Pornography sets! This album's more of a back-to-basics affair for Puddu – recorded with a tight combo, and a very classic approach to mod jazz and funk – performed by a group that's very heavy on keyboards alongside sweet riffing guitar from Alex! The sound is tight, but never too smooth – and there's a few additional horns thrown into the mix, to augment the top end alongside the guitar, clavinet, Hammond, and Fender Rhodes – all with a sweet blend that's almost got a 70s blacksploitation vibe at times, but a bit looser and more spontaneous too. Puddu wrote, arranged, and produced – and most cuts are instrumental, but a few feature vocals from singer Duane Hobson. Titles include "Sexy Lady", "You Got Me Funky", "Such A Bad Girl", "Black Sugar", "Love Rollercoaster", "Losing My Mind", and "Feel The Heat". CD

TeaseTease (Epic) ... CD
Epic/FTG, 1986. Used ... $7.99
Lean, mid 80s pop soul and funk from Tease – funky and nicely thumping work from a group that features singer and songwriter Kipper Jones! Kipper would go on to bigger and brighter prospects as a hit songwriter for other artists, but, both of Tease's self-titled sets in the 80s – this one for Epic, and an earlier effort for RCA – are both unjustly slept and and stand up pretty strongly with better remembered R&B albums from the period. Some of the album reminds us of the funkier pop soul sounds coming out of Minneapolis in the mid 80s, though Tease came together from the west coast scene at the time – with beats, keys, synth, bass and soulful vocals driving it. Nice stuff that's well worth checking out! Includes "The Note", "Better Wild (Than Mild)", "Firestarter", "Body Heat", "Total Control", "Soft Music", "Baby Be Mine" and "I Wish You Were Here". CD

Adrian YoungeBlack Dynamite – Original Motion Picture Score ... CD
Wax Poetics, 2009. Used ... $11.99
The note-perfect funky musical score to blacksploitation homage/spoof Black Dynamite – and an honest and true tribute to the originators of the genre from composer & performer Adrian Younge! We absolutely love that Younge doesn't go for a comic take on the style, and shows a true feel for the great film funk of the era – as he brings influences from Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, and Gene Page – served up with vintage instruments and studio techniques, as Younge shoots for authenticity and nails it perfectly! Younge also layers the sound with a depth of vintage soul, so many of the numbers have vocals, male and female – real songs rather than instrumental passages – another win in our book. The instrumentation is rich, with killer vocals, raw funky drums and bass grooves, scratchy guitars, flute, organ, brass, and vibes – and titles include "Black Dynamite Theme", "Cleaning Up The Streets", "Man With The Heat (Superbad)", "Shine", "Jimmy's Dead", "Shot Me In The Heart", "Black They Back", "Anaconda Malt Liquor", and "Chicago Wind". ✨✧ VariousOn The Detroit Beat – Motor City Soul UK Style 1963 to 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
British rock, but with plenty of soul – as these artists were some of the first in the world to be influenced by the sound of early Motown Records – then set about trying to create their own strand of Detroit soul! The influence of Motown on the sound of so many other scenes has been well documented over the years – but this cool little set gets right to the heart of the matter – by representing the kind of British singers and groups who were some of the first to revel in the spirit of Berry Gordy and his creations – then find a way to move things forward with new recordings of their own! As always with Ace Records, the set is way more than just music – as there's a big booklet of notes, with details on all the many tracks and artists – a double dozen selection, with tracks that includes "Sweet Thing" by Georgie Fame, "Mickey's Monkey" by The Hollies, "No 1 In Your Heart" by Herbie Goins & The Nighttimers, "Heat Wave" by Beverley Jones & The Prestons, "One Of These Days" by Guy Darrell, "I Want To Go Back There Again" by Bill Kenwright & The Runaways, "The Way You Do The Things You Do" by Elkie Brooks, "I'll Be Doggone" by Billy J Kramer with The Dakotas, "As Long As I Know He's Mine" by Julie Grant, "Money" by The Undertakers, "I Want A Love I Can See" by John Leyton & The LeRoys, "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" by The Roulettes, "Every Little Bit Hurts" by Spencer Davis Group, "You Really Got A Hold On Me" by Small Faces, "Never Leave Your Baby's Side" by Tony Jackson, "No Good Without You" by The Birds, and "Let's Go Somewhere" by Beryl Marsden. ✨✧ VariousTortilla Funk ... CD
Lazarus Audio, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very cool! The folks at Lazarus Audio – who also gave you the Black Sugar and We All Together reissues – put together this excellent 19 track compilation of rare Tex/Mex funk from the late 60's and early 70's. The vibe is a mix of straight funk instrumentals and tracks that have a bit more of a Chicano rock/soul sound. We've never seen any of these in the original, and they represent the cream of the crop of the rare border funk scene! Tracks include "Radiator" by Steam Heat, "Cantaloupe Island" by Big Lou, "Pack My Bag" by A. Ramirez, "Cissy Strut" by Joe Bravo, "Dynafunk" by Jazzmanian Devil, "Everybody's Getting So Funky" by Faces South, and "Cokin' & Tokin'" by Tortilla Factory. The cover's a bit weak, but the CD's a great batch of rare stuff that you'll never find elsewhere! CD

✨✧ Bacao Rhythm & Steel BandBacao Rhythm & Steel Band ... CD
Big Crown, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic full length set from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band – a group who've really won us over in recent years with a fast flurry of funky 45s! The group take an older steel band sound, and forge it to a might tighter rhythmic impulse – with a sound that's often even funkier than the best (and few) funky steel band tracks from the 70s – served up with razor-sharp instrumentation, and great production in a Daptone/Soul Fire mode – which really keeps things sounding raw all the way through! The group's got strong ties to the Mighty Mocambos – and some other contemporary funk acts too – and the music is top-shelf all the way through, a funkier full steel band record than you'll ever hope to find. Titles include "Beetham Highway Ride", "Scorpio", "Pimp", "Tropical Heat", "Laventille Road March", "Round & Round", "Port Of Spain Hustle", "Jungle Fever", "Love Like This", and "Dog Was A Doughnut". ✨✧ RootsPhrenology (limited edition CD & DVD) ... CD
MCA, 2002. Used CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
A new hip hop soul masterpiece!!! On Things Fall Apart ?uestlove, Black Thought, DJ Scratch, Rahzel and co. reinvigorated the scene with a Philly style soulful, melancholy groove that seemingly influenced the entirety of the NuSoul world – and it could even be argued that the Roots birthed that whole scene. Phrenology carries that torch, but it's so, SO much more, as the heady nature weighed the previous LP down in spots, and Phrenology is a sprawling exercise in expectation-busting perfection! "Rock You" kicks things off in explosive fashion, forgoing the laid back, yet angry soul backbone the group pioneered in hop hop, for a massive electro pulse pounding style – with Black Thought frenetically spitting confrontational wisdom until the synth unexpectedly dives into a short burst of live hardcore punk with "!!!!!!!" (we know what you're thinking, but trust us, it REALLY works). "Sacrifice" features a surprisingly effective chorus sung by Nelly Furtado, and other guest spots include Kweli heating up "Rolling With Heat", Ursula Rucker kicking some reverential poetry on "Waok (ay) Rollcall", and Musiq on the single "Break You Off". Other highlights include the late 80s Bomb Squad-like production on "Thought @ Work", the group's live instrumentation (and ?uestlove's always great trap work) and soul claps on tunes like "The Seed (2.0)", the epic "Water", and "Complexity" with Jill Scott. If you're solely of the 2 turntables and a mic camp you may want to head elsewhere, but if you've been anxiously awaiting the new Roots LP like we have, you'll be knocked straight on your arse, welled up with tears of joy. The best major label hip hop album of '02, and a beauty to go in the time capsule for future generations to learn, and mourn what they missed first hand. Amazing!!! Other tracks include "Quills", "Pussy Galore", and "Something In The Way Of Things (In Town)". CD

Riverside, 1960. Used ... $9.99
Very hip work from a young Jimmy Heath – a relative newcomer to the scene at this point, but breaking out with a firm conception and tone, exercised strongly here in a set of large group arrangements worked out in collaboration with Tom McIntosh. McIntosh's work in this format is well known from albums by Dizzy and James Moody – and as with those records, this one has an edgey quality that really keeps the music fresh, and which provides a good foil for solos by Heath, McIntosh, Pat Patrick, and Cannonball Adderley. Titles include "Big P", "Mona's Mood", "Nails", and "The Picture Of Heath". CD features the bonus track "Nails", in an alternate take! CD

Cannonball AdderleyThings Are Getting Better (SACD) ... CD
Riverside/Fantasy, 1958. Used ... $24.99
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". Other cuts include "Just One Of Those Things", "Sounds For Sid", "Groovin High", "Serves Me Right", and "Blues Oriental". CD

Bob Brookmeyer & Bill EvansIvory Hunters – Double Barrelled Piano ... CD
United Artists/Universal (Japan), 1959. Used ... $19.99
A compelling album of twin-piano lines – one in which Bill Evans and Bob Brookmeyer play head-to-head, in a spiraling modernist style that brings out the best in each player! Although Brookmeyer's best known as a trombonist, he's pretty great here on piano – and the album's a real treasure from his legendary late 50s years – a time when Bob was really opening up tremendously in his music! The album separates out the players via stereo – with Bill Evans in the right channel and Brookmeyer in the left – and the format usually has one player in a rhythm groove while the other solos over the top. The bass of Percy Heath and drums of Connie Kay complete the group – and titles include longish versions of "As Time Goes By", "I Got Rhythm", "The Man I Love", and "The Way You Look Tonight". CD

Prestige (Japan), 1954. Used ... $14.99
An early full-length album issued under Miles Davis' name – one that brings together some earlier 10" and single recordings for Prestige! The feel here is quite similar to Davis' work of the time for Blue Note – done with tracks that are short and tight, and very boppish – less of the glistening Davis style of later years, but still quite strongly voiced nonetheless. Players include Horace Silver on piano on most tracks, plus a bit of keys from John Lewis – and one track even features Charles Mingus on piano! Other players on the sessions include Art Blakey, Max Roach, or Kenny Clarke on drums – plus Percy Heath on bass, and a bit of alto from Davey Schildkraut. Titles include "I'll Remember April", "Old Devil Moon", "Tune Up", "Miles Ahead", "Four", and "Smooch". CD

A beautiful album of understated brilliance – one of Art Farmer's early shifts into the sublime, and an easily-blown batch of trumpet tracks that always takes our breath away! There's a sense of relaxed freedom here that's really tremendous – a difference from some of Farmer's more arranged, or more hard-blown moments of the 50s – and a real move into notes that are airier and more open – almost effortless at times, and played like nobody else! The group's a quartet – with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Tommy Williams on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – and the tracks are all in the four to five minute range, with Art crafting lyrically soulful lines over the top. Titles include "Who Cares", "Out Of The Past", "Younger Than Springtime", "That Ole Devil Called Love", and "Goodbye Old Girl". CD

Atlantic/Rhino, 1968. Used ... $4.99
Aretha Franklin sings it loud and proud, in front of a classy crowd at the Olympia Theater in Paris – a move that would have made Berry Gordy proud, but which is carried off here in a classic Atlantic mode throughout! Given the tight studio handling of Aretha during these early Atlantic years, the live setting is a nice surprise – and shows that the Jerry Wexler touch could still hold strong, and present a concert version of Franklin's new groove that was every bit as great as the studio one. Aretha's vocals are right up front in the mix, and gets a bit of backing support from a trio that includes her sister Carolyn. Savoy/Denon, 1959. Used ... $14.99
Stellar stuff – recorded a few years before Benny Golson started to explore his "jazztet" ideas with Art Farmer, but handled in a very similar mode. The sextet on the session's a crack one – with Charlie Persip, Paul Chambers, and Wynton Kelly on rhythm – and searing horn solos from Fuller, Golson, and a very young Lee Morgan. A fantastic lost soul jazz groover! The record is clearly one of the best ever cut by this fantastically overlooked bass player – and it's filled with a great set of players that includes Bobby Timmons, Nat Adderley, Charles Davis, and Jimmy Heath. The whole thing leaps along with that tight mix of hardbop, soul jazz, and spiritual modernism that would occasionally show up on the best Riverside/Jazzland session – and the level of writing and playing is superb throughout! Jones plays both bass and cello, and he kicks the group into Jazz Messengers-like precision for the duration of the session. Catalonian Fire is filled with the kind of quick-witted piano work we've really come to admire from Tete Montoliu – who really hits a new level of genius on his 70s recordings for the Steeplechase label! Montoliu has this amazing way of hitting hard, with a real edge – then laying back and just letting things flow – kind of a shift between left and right hand emphasis that really makes for some breathtaking runs on the keyboard – especially with backing here from Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. The album Tete is bold, beautiful piano work from the mighty Tete Montoliu – working here at the height of his powers, in a killer trio with Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Albert Tootie Heath on drums! The record soars right from the start – thanks to a sublime reading of "Giant Steps" that brings in all the sheets of sound that Coltrane intended for the tune, but also a freewheeling, highly punctuated groove that really sets fire to the piano! Other tunes are equally important jazz standards – like "Body & Soul", "Solar", and "Hot House" – all handled with Tete's amazing approach to the keys. CD

2 great Paris live sets from Gerry Mulligan – with his Concert Jazz Band at L'Olympia in 1960 – followed by a 1962 quartet set at the same venue serving as bonus tracks! The 11 titles on the first CD and the first titles on the second CD are culled from the 1960 set – a tight affair with great solo work from a larger group of players – which includes Don Ferrara and Conte Candoli on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Willie Dennis and Alan Raph on trombone, Bob Donovan and Gene Quill on alto, Jim Reider and Zoot Sims on tenor, Buddy Clark on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. A real triumph! Titles include "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Black Nightgown", "Body And Soul", "Barbara's Theme", "Apple Core", "Out Of This World", "Go Home", "I'm Gonna Go Fishing", "Blueport" and more! The second CD is closed out by a 1962 set by the the Gerry Mulligan Quartet – originally released as the LP Gerry Mulligan & His Quartet Live At The Olympia Theatre 1962! The tracks are long, and the setting fluid – as Gerry plays baritone on most tracks, but piano on a couple; and Bob Brookmeyer does the same, taking a break from valve trombone to play piano for one track as well. Rhythm is by the team of Bill Crow on bass and Gus Johnson on drums – and titles include "Spring Is Sprung", "Five Brothers", "Subterranean Blues", "Blue Port", and "Utter Chaos". ✨✧ VariousCoolin' – A Soul Jazz Journey ... CD
Pho/Muse, 1970s. Used ... $9.99
No coolin out here, as the set's a great batch of soulful jazz numbers from the legendary Muse label – filled with overlooked gems from the imprint's key 70s run – including a fair bit of gems that will set you digging for other treasures from the label! The style here is less straight jazz funk than a mix of soulful and righteous styles – some straight, some a bit more exploratory – all pretty darn wonderful, and proof that Muse could often hit some of the hippest territory in jazz when it was on the money. The set features 8 tracks in all – including "Cheeka's Dance" by Groove Holmes, "Vibrations" by Buster Williams, "Dawn" by Kenny Barron, "Angel Man" by Jimmy Heath, "New Found Truths" by Catalyst, and "Bumpin On Sunset" by Jimmy Ponder. Sweet Jamaican harmony! Harmony groups form a major piece of the Jamaican music tapestry, and Soul Jazz casts their Studio One-centered spotlight on one of the finest batches of Jamaican ensemble soul around! Covering everything from the rocksteady years on up through the late roots era, the groups showcased here deliver smoothly harmonized numbers under Cosxsone Dodd's deft direction, with only a few hewing towards the more raw sound favored by some of the rootsier ensembles, but all over easy Studio One rocking grooves. 19 dynamite numbers in all, with full annotation as with other releases in this Soul Jazz series, including "Solid Foundation" by the Righteous Flames, "Things A Come Up To Bump" by the Bassies, "You Will Never Know" by the Mad Lads, "What Is It" by the Consumates, "The Struggle" by the Viceroys, "Get In The Groove" by the Heptones, "Pick Up The Pieces" by the Royals, "Jah Jah Go Before Us" by the Gladiators, "Love & Affection" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "Down Presser International" by the Stingers, "Baby Why" by the Cables, "The Pressure Is On" by the Purpleites, "Cheating & Lying" by the Silvertones and more! ✨✧ Anthony BraxtonWhat's New In The Tradition (In The Tradition Vols 1 & 2) ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1974. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Anthony Braxton – an album that has him playing straight ahead jazz – but at a time when he was also making some of his most complex recordings of the 70s! The approach here is sublime – as Braxton's reputation has ears already anticipating some far-out playing, but then marvel at his restraint – his care for keeping alto and bass clarinet work inside a straight jazz tradition, yet always hinting at the modern inflections he can bring to his music! Tunes are almost all jazz standards, blown beautifully – with a tone that's crisp, cool, and very inviting – surprisingly soulful, and never cold at all – matched well with the rhythm trio of Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Titles include "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "Ornithology", "Marshmallow", "Body & Soul", "Donna Lee", "My Funny Valentine" and "Half Nelson". CD features both albums, with 13 tracks in all – apparently bonus tracks that weren't on the original records, too! CD

✨✧ Bootsy CollinsWorld Wide Funk ... CD
Mascot, 2017. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bootsy Collins has always been a very collaborative artist – from his early work in the James Brown Band, to his famous recordings with George Clinton, to his own albums – which often included most of the leading lights of the P-Funk universe! That collaborative spirit is alive and well here – as Bootsy opens the door to invite a huge host of guests from the worlds of funk, soul, and hip hop – all to augment his groove, and help his classic music find a way to live anew in the contemporary generation! Nearly every track here has at least one guest – most have many more – and the album features contributions from Musique Soulchild, Doug E Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten, Dru Down, Mc Eiht, Bernie Worrell, Chuck D, Buckheat, and many others – all of whom participate in the general party vibe of the set. Get On Down, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pivotal early dub! Depending upon whose history of the Jamaican recording industry you subscribe to, this is can be considered by many to be the first dub LP – and whether that's proveable or not, it's certain among the first! History aside, it's a mighty set with some raw early dub style workouts at the hands of Errol Thompson at the renowned 16 North Parade recording studio run by Randy's, with some deft production by Clive Chin. Needing virtually no introduction, the Impact All Stars drop some incredible rhythms, many which will be immediately recognizable as having been versioned from massive numbers for Augustus Pablo, Junior Byles and the Soul Vendors. Titles include "Java Dub", "Cheating Dub", "ET Special", "Ordinary Version Dub", "Hide Away Dub" and "Black Man's Dub". CD

✨✧ Milt JacksonMilt Jackson Quartet ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1955. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A slightly different take on the Modern Jazz Quartet sound of the early years – as the album features Milt Jackson's vibes in the company of MJQ bandmates Percy Heath and Connie Kay, but also includes Horace Silver on piano – in the spot normally reserved for John Lewis! The presence of Silver on piano gives a bit of a harder edge to the set, one that almost recalls some of Jackson's work on Blue Note in the early 50s, yet which is rounded out here by a few lighter and more lyrical touches on rhythm. The set includes a great reading of "Moonray", the Jackson original "Stonewall", and the tracks "Wonder Why", "I Should Care", and "My Funny Valentine". CD

Blue Note, 1953. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
First volume of the two LP set that compiled JJ's bop trombone sides for Blue Note. Great stuff, and arguably among some of his best work! The arrangements are tight, and JJ's in the company of players like Kenny Clarke, Clifford Brown, and Jimmy Heath – who push him with a dark edge that later bandmates never managed. The CD features some rare alternate takes, and titles include "Sketch", "Get Happy", "Capri", "Turpike" and "Lover Man". CD

✨✧ Duke JordanTrio & Quintet ... CD
Savoy, 1955. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Duke Jordan never made many albums as a leader back in the 50s – but all of them are great, including this classic set on Savoy! As you'd guess from the title, the record features Jordan in two different settings – trio and quintet – the former of which features Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums, working in warmly soulful formation with Duke on the first half of the record. The second half brings in Cecil Payne on baritone and Eddie Bert on trombone – a whole new approach to the music, and one that really shows the depth of Jordan's under-documented arranging skills – which here are almost in the territory of Gigi Gryce or Benny Golson. Titles include "Flight To Jordan", "Cu-ba", "Two Loves", "Scotch Blues", "Sultry Eve", "Night In Tunisia", "Summertime", and "Forecast". CD

✨✧ Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk Trio (Japanese pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1952/1954. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Key early trio material from Thelonious Monk – a record that features seminal recordings of important compositions, all done in sharply angular versions that showcase the best modern Monk touch on piano! As with a number of early Prestige LPs, the material here is pulled from 2 different sessions that were originally issued as smaller records – but there's a deeply unified sound to the record, and the raw early Monk sound is undeniably great! The trios here feature either Gary Mapp or Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey or Max Roach on drums – and titles include "Monk's Dream", "Little Rootie Tootie", "Bemsha Swing", "Trinkle Trinkle", "Blue Monk", "Just A Gigolo", and "Bye-Ya". This version includes two bonus tracks, "Work" and "Nutty", which were pulled from the same sessions. CD

✨✧ VariousNothing Comes Easy – 20 Hard-Edged Stompers From The British Beat Era ... CD
Psychic Circle (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Raw, jangly British Beat from the mid 60s – an uptempo blast of garagey rock and primitive combo pop compiled by Nick Soloman/Bevis Frond! Nothing Comes Easy is pretty easy to love – a scorcher of a set of tunes that lean on hard charging r&b and the most raucous of early Beatles and Kinks school of rollicking sounds – and likely fuel for the garage rock to come! Includes incendiary work by the Mark 4, The Peasants, The UK Bonds, The Cheatin' Hearts, The Liverpool 5 and more! Titles include "The Last Thing I Ever Do" by The UK Bonds, "Can't Understand" by The Pirates, "Got Love If You Want It" by The Dee Tees, "Find Out What's Happening" by The Gamblers, "Gimme That Wine" by The Panthers, "Most Unlovely" The Luvvers, "That Way Too" by Winston G, "Slow Down" by The Mark 4, "Got Everything But Love" by Ten Feet and more. ✨✧ Willie NelsonTeatro ... CD
Island, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A legendary later album from the great Willie Nelson – but one that also really does a great job of linking back to his earliest years as well! The album offers up Willie in a wonderfully stripped-down setting – recorded live, in a shuttered California movie theater – with a nine piece group that's superbly recorded by Daniel Lanois – who uses gentle sonic touches to underscore the darkness in the music, but without ever getting in the way of the singer and his musicians – and never using cliches to overstate the project! The best aspect, to us – is the way that Willie revisits some of the classic material from his RCA years – fantastic songs that were overlooked by audiences of the 60s, but which marked Nelson as one of the most cerebral songwriters of his generation – tunes that finally got wider exposure here. This is one of those "tour de force" projects that actually lives up to the excitement – and is well worth the legendary status it's gotten over the years. Titles include "Ou Es-Tu Mon Amour (Where Are You My Love)", "I Never Cared For You", "Darkness On The Face Of The Earth", "These Lonely Nights", "The Maker", "Somebody Picked Up My Pieces", "Three Days", "Annie", and "I've Just Destroyed The World I'm Living In". ✨✧ Round TripRound Trip ... CD
MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real stormer from Round Trip – a group whose roots go back to the legendary Sins Of Satan album on Buddah, and who also work here with great production from Al Perkins – in a style that's a bit like his music with One Way! We're not sure if "round trip" was an answer to One Way's name – but whatever the case, the group's a great part of the Perker corner of the universe at the time – and really share his wonderfully warm way with a groove! Oliver Cheatham's in the group at this point – and his vocals really help deepen their sound, especially on some of the mellower cuts, which stand as a real surprise for this sort of record – and give the whole thing a much richer vibe than you might expect. Titles include "Woman", "Nothing Wrong With Dancing", "Not In The Cards", "Let's Go Out Tonite", "Lost Inside Of You", and "Higher Consciousness". CD

A nice little collection of some of Dizzy Gillespie's best bop material for Savoy – tunes that were originally recorded as 78rpm singles – then issued together on this classic album of all-star players! The tunes are short, catchy, and often very grooving – that mix of whimsy and modernism that made Dizzy stand out from the start – handled by a few different groups of players, with musicians who include Milt Jackson on vibes, John Coltrane on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Percy Heath on bass. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Star Dust", "The Bluest Blues", "The Champ", "Birk's Works", "Caravan", "Time On My Hands", and "Ooh Shoo Be Doo Bee". CD

✨✧ Bobby Blue BlandFurther On Up The Road – The Duke Recordings 1955 to 1962 ... CD
Southern Routes, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
There's nobody like Bobby Blue Bland on Duke Records – especially during the early years that are featured on this collection! Bland came out of Memphis with a very unique, really amazing sound right from the start – an approach to blues that was a lot more sophisticated than most of his contemporaries, even those on the LA scene – with lots of jazz in his phrasing, and his backings as well – and this sublime vocal approach that often had Bobby growling in a way that seemed to come from deep down in the depths of his soul, but never in any sort of gimmicky sort of style. Bland was always the perfect balance of cool, class, and outright blues power – and that was never more true than on these sides. 2CD set features a whopping 57 tracks in all – with titles that include "It's My Life Baby", "Honey Bee", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Is It Real", "I Can't Put You Down Baby", "Don't Want No Woman", "Loan Me A Helping Hand", "Bobby's Blues", "You've Got Bad Intentions", "I'll Take Care Of You", "Cry Cry Cry", "You're Worth It All", "That's The Way Love Is", "Call On Me", "Blue Moon", "I've Just Got To Forget You", and "How Does A Cheatin Woman Feel". ✨✧ Miles DavisMiles Davis & Horns ... CD
Prestige (Japan), 1951/1953. Used ... Out Of Stock
Don't let the "horns" in the title put you off – because the record's not a hokey "with horns" record by Miles, but a batch of all-star sessions that has him playing with some really tremendous contemporaries! The set compiles early Miles Davis sides from two different Prestige sessions of the early 50s – material originally issued as 10 inch LPs, but brought together here in a very cool full length package with a cover image by Mad Magazine's Don Martin! Side one features Miles with a sextet that includes Sonny Rollins, Bennie Green, John Lewis, Percy Heath, and Roy Haynes – on the tracks "Morpheus", "Down", "Blue Room", and "Whispering" – all taken in a boppish mode, but with slight modern touches. Side two features the compositions of Al Cohn – "Tasty Pudding", "Floppy", "Willie The Wailer", and "For Adults Only" – played by a septet that features Cohn, Zoot Sims, John Lewis, Kenny Clarke, Leonard Gaskin, and Sonny Truitt – a very nice match to the sound of side one, and a surprisingly unified record overall! Hart has been an in demand player for years, and takes the opportunities of his own compositions to play clean, willowy lines on sax and occasional flute, with plenty of fluid piano and B3 and Rhodes in the mix. Other players include Lonnie Plaxico on bass, Michael Philip Mossman on trumpet, Ranato Thoms on percussion and Nasheet Waits on drums, and Shedrick Mitchell on keys. Tracks include "Love Is All We Need", "Still My Friend", "Crystal", Heath's "Bruh' Slim" and "A Harmonic Future", "Alone On 911" and "God Is All We Need". CD

Inner City, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful pairing of these two modern boppers from the 50s – heard here on a set of rare Parisian recordings originally issued under the leadership of Henri Renaud! There's a really wonderful feel to the record – the sharp edges of Cohn and Renaud's original compositions, played with a great degree of soul by the soloists. Renaud plays piano on all tracks – and the first batch feature both Johnson's trombone and Cohn's tenor, alongside Gigi Gryce on baritone and Jerry Hurwitz on trumpet – on titles that include "Wallington Special", "Lisa", "Boo Wah", and "Something For Lili". Two more tracks – "Once In A While" and "The Things We Did Last Summer" – feature Cohn in a quartet with Renaud. And one more title – "If I Had You" – is presented in a ten minute long take, played by a group that features Johnson and Cohn with Renaud, plus Milt Jackson on vibes and Percy Heath on bass. CD

Ropeadope, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
A smoking little set from Ramsey Lewis – one that really recalls the best electric years of his 70s recordings – and which also has a much sharper sound than some of the other albums recorded with the Urban Knights! There's plenty of great piano on the record from Ramsey, mixed with keyboards from Tim Gant – and the blend has that warm mix of acoustic and electric that Columbia would feature on some of their more soulful fusion albums of the 70s – and which is never overdone here in the production or arrangements, given that the group is nice and lean – with just Henry Johnson on guitar, Charles Heath on drums, and Joshua Ramos on bass. The great singer Dee Alexander joins the group on "The Shape Of My Heart" – and other tracks include "Tequila Mockingbird", "The Spark", "I'll Never Forget You", "Sharing Her Journey", "Trees", "Armandos Rhumba", and "Baby What You Want Me To Do".
