Grover Washington JrFeels So Good ... CD
Universal, 1975. Used ... $5.99
An incredible batch of electric funk from Grover Washington Jr – easily one of his best albums ever! The record really picks up from the sweet CTI sound of the 70s – taking Bob James arrangements with a lot of space and electric keyboards, and letting Groover blow some wonderfully soulful lines over the top on soprano sax! The album's got some really wonderful funk tracks that feature a mad mix of drums, bass, and lots of that Bob James "space" – including the massive cuts "Hydra" and "Knucklehead" – both of them magic! Other tracks include "Moonstreams", "It Feels So Good", and "The Sea Lion". CD

Mark ColbySerpentine Fire/One Good Turn ... CD
Tappan Zee/Expansion (UK), 1978/1979. Used ... $11.99
A pair of sweet funky fusion gems from Mark Colby – back to back on a single CD! Serpentine Fire is an overlooked gem from Bob James' Tappan Zee empire of the 70s – that label that provided the perfect platform for artists to grow a bit more after the CTI years! Reedman Mark Colby is a newcomer to this scene, but hits a groove that's instantly in the best CTI/Kudu mode – with funky jazz backings that often have that laidback, spacious style that's more soulful than jamming fusion – served up by players who include Bob James on Fender Rhodes and piano, Eric Gale and Steve Khan on guitars, Steve Gadd on drums, and Hiram Bullock on some electric guitar. Colby himself plays tenor and soprano sax – and titles include a nice remake of Earth Wind & Fire's "Serpentine Fire" – plus "King Tut", "Renegade", "On & On", and "Daydreamer". On One Good Turn, reedman Mark Colby really comes into his own – crafting sweet lines on tenor and soprano sax, in modes that extend previous 70s fusion work from artists like Stanley Turrentine or Grover Washington Jr! Like both of those giants, Colby gets great backing here in a spacious electric style that allows plenty of room for the solos in the lead – with artists who include Bob James and Barry Miles on Fender Rhodes, Eric Gale and Steve Khan on guitars, and Mike Mainieri on vibes. Titles include "Capativa", "Village Zoo", "Peace Of Mind", "Skat Talk", and "Macbeth". CD

✨✧ Philadelphia ExperimentPhiladelphia Experiment ... CD
Ropeadope/Atlantic, 2001. Used ... $4.99
Sweetly funky grooves from the Philly underground! The Philadelphia Experiment is a great trio featuring drummer Ahmir Thompson (from The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine, who plays some great Fender Rhodes and Hammond B-3 on the set! The core grooves are by the trio, working together in a way that's not that different from the freestyle funk of Medeski, Martin, & Wood back when they used to care a bit more about the groove – and the group's joined on a few tracks by guests, including Pat Martino on guitar, Jon Swana on trumpet, and Larry Gold on cello. The best cuts on the set have a hard beat underneath, warm rolling basslines, and washes of keyboards over the top to keep things nice and sweet. Titles include "The Miles Hit", "Call For All Demons", "Grover", "Ain't It The Truth", "Mister Magic", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Lesson #4". CD

Esther PhillipsWhat A Diff'rence A Day Makes ... CD
Columbia, 1975. Used ... $6.99
One of Esther Phillips' biggest comeback albums from the 70s – a classic set that takes her deeply soulful vocal approach, and sets it to some sweet jazz funk backings – served up by guitarist Joe Beck, who almost gets equal credit on the album cover! The rest of the lineup is equally great – with alto from David Sanborn, more horns from The Brecker Brothers, and even a bit of work from Steve Khan – all fusion superstars in their own right, but who never eclipse Esther's lead. Titles include a good version of Grover Washington's "Mr Magic" – with the same funky undercurrent as the original – plus the tracks "One Night Affair", "I Can Stand A Little Rain", "Hurtin House", "Turn Around Look At Me", and a semi-hit version of "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes".
