FumbleNot Fade Away – The Complete Recordings 1964 to 1982 (4CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99
A surprisingly huge amount of recordings from Fumble – a UK group who started out during the big Brit rock explosion of the mid 60s, then went on to become a strong rock revival act in the 70s! The package begins with early singles and other material – including cuts issued as Four Iveys – then quickly moves into a range of albums that have the group reworking older rock tunes with some of that cool, compressed British production style of the time – but mostly keeping things lean and simple, with most instrumentation by the core quartet. The group bring plenty of their own songs into play, while also calling up older classics – almost proto pub-rock at times, and given some great Shel Talmy production on some of the best tracks. The set features the full albums Fumble, Poetry In Lotion, Rumble With Fumble, and It's Only A Rock N Roll Game – plus a huge amount of other bonus singles, and even cuts from the Elvis Original Cast album! 92 tracks in all – and a huge booklet of notes. Paul Desmond & Gerry MulliganTwo Of A Mind (First Editions Series with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA, 1962. Used ... $5.99
A reunion of sorts for Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan – given that the pair had played together on record 5 years before, in a similar session for Verve! This album's almost lighter and more airy than the previous one – as it's done in a mode that echoes strongly with Desmond's own genius at RCA at the time – using a piano-less quartet format that has both horns carving out their own subtle space in sound, hanging together, but each occupying a different range of tonal color. The tracks are relatively longish, and the pair dart around each other nicely on tracks like "All The Things You Are", "Out Of Nowhere", "Blight Of The Fumble Bee", and "Two Of A Mind". CD

VariousBubblerock Is Here To Stay – The British Pop Explosion 1970 to 1973 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 30.99
A fantastic collection of work from the UK scene at the start of the 70s – a treasure trove of pop cuts from the time, most of which never made it across the Atlantic to our neck of the woods – and which represent a whole different world of music than you'd know from the classic rock and prog albums that usually represent the period! Instead, these are cuts that were cooked up in the studio in search of a hit – some by names that worked strongly in the 60s, others by new groups – some of whom only existed as a name on a label – but all in search of fresh sounds, groovy lyrics, and a way of putting over a tune that spoke volumes about the studio changes and advances taking place around the UK scene at the time! A number of cuts here have production that might be vaguely in glam territory, while others change up the way that vocals and guitars work together, and others evolve past Brit pop modes of the 60s – embracing psych or hard rock elements, but in a subtle way. As with other Cherry Red/Grapefruit collections of this nature, the whole thing is a stunning journey through music that we'd never have heard otherwise, and never in this much detail – presented with a big booklet of notes on all the crazy cats within – to support 85 tracks by artists who include Paintbox, Simon Turner, Mr Bloe, The Weathermen, Fumble, Posse, Gingerbread, Majority One, Jonathan King, Marmalade, Clifford T Ward, Stud Leather, Paul Gabriel, Autumn, St Cecelia, Rick Price, The Piglets, Kincade, Sweet, The Sad, Gumm, The Angelette, Grumble, Jungle Jim, Shag, Bubblerock, Harmony Grass, Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs, Stardust, Bill Fay, Pete Dello, Buggy, David Essex, Peter Kellern, Fickle Pickle, Touchwood, and many others! VariousOh You Pretty Things – Glam Queens & Street Urchins 1970 to 1976 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $32.99
A fantastic collection of tracks from the glam rock generation – not just work by street urchins, but some big names as well – including acts you might know from other modes, all brought together here with a unified aesthetic in the early 70s! Glam was hardly a flash in the pan – as instead, the moment provided a key critical crossroads in music – a moment in which attitudes, styles, politics, and fashion were really opened up past mainstream expectations – setting the stage for punk experimentation, and a huge range of new music to come in the following decade! The music really gets its due here – with a big booklet of notes that provide track by track detail – taking you through a journey that spans 66 tracks in all, by a diverse array of artists who include Brutus, Dana Gillespie, Streak, Agnes Strange, Third World War, John Cale, Despair, Hammersmith Gorillas, Roxy Music, Tina Harvey, Slade, Pretty Things, Spark, New York Dolls, Ian Hunter, Silverhead, Sweet, Tim Curry, Troggs, Slowload, Jobraith, Hollywood Stars, Fumble, Spiv, and many others.
