Brian AugerFull Circle – Live At Bogie's ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
Brian Auger doesn't come full circle with his early work – and instead, he moves far forward – really soaring here in a tight trio setting, with even more jazz in the mix than on his classic recordings! The set's a great reminder that – despite all the keyboards, funk, and soul that Auger has given us over the decades – he's also a hell of a jazz musician too, and really jumps out with lively vibe throughout – echoing a bit of 60s soul jazz modes, but also sounding a lot less retro than you might expect! If anything, the set almost has Brian reinventing himself as a player who can groove, but in a lyrical way – as he served up nice takes on "Creepin", "Little Sunflower", "All Blues", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "For Dancers Only". Trio/Gronland (Germany), 1982. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A fantastic trio of talents – the mighty bassist and drummer from Can, joined by the suddenly-solo Jah Wobble from Public Image Limited – all in a set of grooves that brings out all the best of their talents! Given that Wobble already presents some beautifully heavy bass, Czukay instead focuses on his work on guitar, organ, piano, percussion, and lots of other weird sonic sources – all given great focus by the drums of Liebezeit, who makes the whole record sound a heck of a lot more funky than you might expect! In fact, the record's almost a post-punk take on the best funky modes of early 70s Can – with very cool production that brings in lots of dark edges, which sound especially nice on Wobble's vocals. Truly one of the best things that Wobble ever did – and with tracks that include "How Much Are They", "Full Circle RPS", "Mystery RPS", "Trench Warfare", and "Where's The Money". Eddie PalmieriFull Circle ... CD
Ropeadope/Uprising, 2018. New Copy ... $11.99 15.98
Fantastic work from Eddie Palmieri – sounding here as if he hasn't changed a thing since the 70s! With most artists, that would be a critique – but given that during the 70s, Eddie was constantly ablaze with creative activity, and always pushing his boundaries – we mean that statement as a compliment in the best possible way – because all these many years later, Palmieri is still setting the standard for everything that can be done in Latin jazz, and reminding us that few folks can ever reach the heights to which he's taken us over the years! Eddie's been sneaking a few killer albums on the market over the past decade or so, and this is the latest in that run – completely away from any more commercial inclinations, and done in a burning descarga mode that allows Eddie's piano to really open up in a killer jazz lineup that includes Jimmy Bosch and Conrad Herwig on trombones, Jonathan Powell on trumpet, Louis Fouche on trumpet, Luques Curtis on bass, and Camilo Molina on timbales! Herman Olivera sings lead vocals, but the tracks are long and feature lots of jazzy solos – on titles that include "Paolo Pa Rumba", "Oyelo Que Te Conviene", "Linda Yambu", "Azucar", "Vamanos Pa'L Monte", and "Muneca". KPM/Be With (UK), 2018. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The title totally gets it right – as the album features sound library giants Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett coming completely full circle – emerging again to give us the same sort of grooves they recorded for KPM back in the 70s! The album's a new one, but it's got the complete sound of the 70s all the way through – fantastic production, sublime instrumentation, and just the right way of putting things together with that no-nonsense sound library approach! That means no vocals, never too much jamming, and loads of grooves that are catchy, but also pretty funky too – with larger horn arrangements handled by Hawkshaw, which glide over the rhythms and keyboards in a mighty nice way. Titles include "Serengeti", "Open Road", "On The Nile", "Marrakech", "Midnight Jazz", "Flying", and "Hole In One". LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette ColemanOrnette Coleman Trio At The Golden Circle Vol 1 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1965. Used ... $18.99
Important mid 60s work from Ornette – and one of the few recordings of this format to see larger release at the time! The set captures Ornette in a much freer style than heard on his Atlantic recordings from a few years before – paying alto, violin, and trumpet, in a trio with David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums. Tracks are long and unbridled – with less of the rhythmic changes that you'd hear in work by the classic quartet, and more of a full-on fierce soloing mode. Titles include "Faces & Places", "Dee Dee", and "Dawn". CD

✨✧ Bobby Scott/Larry ElgartJoyful Noises/The City ... CD
El (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of great albums from Bobby Scott – both pretty darn sweet! First up is Joyful Noises – a really wonderful album from the great Bobby Scott – an artist you might know best as a singer, or as composer of a few big hits in the 60s – but also a hell of a jazz pianist and arranger too! The album features Scott's piano over some wonderfully full backings – often with that sweet 60s Mercury Records swing – a bit like charts by Benny Golson or Quincy Jones, but maybe with a bit of strings at points, illustrating Bobby's then-great talent for penning film work too. Side one of the album features the extended suite "Four Solemn Thoughts", which feels a bit like some of the more serious themes in Taste Of Honey (also written by Scott) – and side two features shorter cuts, like "One For Quincy", "Two Dancing Feet", and "The City Of Water" – all very nice! The City is a very cool set from bandleader Larry Elgart – maybe his hippest album of the 60s! The set features all original music written by the young Bobby Scott – then really at the height of his powers as an arranger, and gifted with this wonderful ear for mixing rich colors with a bottom-end swing – at a level that makes the record groove like no other Elgart album we can think of. There's some beautiful passages that are full of the right sort of tonal elements to illustrate Scott's picture of the city – and titles include "Columbus Circle At 5am", "Rain & Pavement", "The Village", "On The Drive", "Uptown Incident", and "Dance Of Glass & Steel". CD also features a bonus vocal track – "Wandrin Star". CD

Kenny BarronConcentric Circles ... CD
Blue Note, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
One of the things we really love about a Kenny Barron album with horns – and there's a lot of them – is that when Kenny works with horn players, he always lets their voices ring out as strongly as his in the lead – and maybe even more strongly overall! That's definitely the case here, on a crackling Blue Note set – one that has Barron's piano situated beautifully with the saxophone work of Dayna Stephens and the trumpet and flugelhorn of Mike Rodriguez – the latter of whom really shapes the set with his fluid sense of soul! The rhythm team is great, too – with Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums – both getting that rolling Barron sense of modal energy just right – on titles that include "In The Dark", "Baile", "DPW", "Concentric Circles", "Blue Waters", and "Short Journey" – plus a version of Caetano Veloso's "Aquele Frevo Axe". Bobby HutchersonStick-Up! ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... About June 19, 2019 (delayed)
The sticks are up, and Bobby Hutcherson is at the top of his game – hitting a whole new groove here in this sublime session of modal numbers for Blue Note – a slightly warmer set than his more modern albums of the "new thing" years, and a great indication of the directions he'd take in the 70s! Bobby's vibes are set up wonderfully here in a quintet that includes Joe Henderson on tenor sax, McCoy Tyner on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all players who bring key elements to the groove. Tyner's got an obvious ear for the modal rhythms that Hutcherson's heading for; Higgins' drum work is freely lyrical in all the best ways; and Henderson's horn sharpens the edges of the tunes a bit, bringing in some nice darker sounds. The kickoff track is an amazing modal reading of Ornette's "Una Muy Bonita", and the rest tracks are all Hutcherson originals, including "Summer Nights", "8/4 Beat", "Black Circle", "Verse", and "Blues Mind Matter". Julian LageLove Hurts ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Julian Lage is often one of the more compelling contemporary jazz guitarists on record – and this time around, he definitely lives up to that legacy – by offering up unusual trio takes on the music of Ornette Coleman, David Lynch, and Keith Jarrett – while also adding in a few of his own great tunes too! Lage often has a bit of fuzz around the edges – not full distortion, but also not the clean, crisp sound that's more often heard with jazz guitar – and that fullness of tone really makes things interesting, and often pushes out a sound that feels like a lot more than a trio – especially when the bass of Jorge Roeder and drums of Dave King get a bit more dynamic. Titles include "In Heaven", "Tomorrow Is The Question", "Trudgin", "Love Hurts", "In Circles", "Encore A", "The Windup", and "Crying". CD

Asha/Soul Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 26.99
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by DC flutist Lloyd McNeil – and one of the grooviest, too! Lloyd's work is always amazing – stretched-out, spiritual, and filled with life – but this time around, there's a definite groove to the record that's undeniable – an increased sense of rhythm, yet one that's still extremely creative, especially in the mellower moments – which are among some of the most compelling that McNeil ever recorded. The tunes were originally scored for a dance group, and feature a core combo with Lloyd on flute, some great Fender Rhodes from Eugene Rush, and sublime bass and drum patterns – mixed with some haunting added woodwinds, played by a combo that also features the legendary Andrew White. The whole record has a beautifully rhythmic quality, filled with throbbing, modal, soulful grooves – and tracks include "Home Rule", "City Triptych", "2504 Cliffborne Pl", "Just 71% Moor", and "Fountain In The Circle". Joshua RedmanCome What May ... LP
Nonesuch, 2019. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
Really great work from tenorist Joshua Redman – an artist that many have been following for decades – but who, to us, really seems to be hitting a new level of genius in recent years! There's this understated confidence going on here – as if Redman no longer has anything to prove, and can just open up beautifully on the tenor – never breaking down too many barriers in jazz, but always blowing with this distinct sound that's very much his own – and which brings an edge to his well-written compositions on the record, which have a beautiful balance of color and rhythm. Pianist Aaron Goldberg is also fantastic – a very rhythmic player, but one who also leaves a lot of space between the notes – in ways that create this glow, or maybe a sense of waves of sound from his instrument – gently rocking the performance in this strong, yet subtle way. The rest of the quartet features Reuben Rogers on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums that are bold, but never overdone – and the set of all-original material includes "How We Do", "DGAF", "Stagger Beer", "Vast", "Circle Of Life", and "Come What May". Baroquely beautiful work from the Stax soul master – one of Isaac Hayes' heaviest albums of the 70s – and a record so massive, they needed 2LPs to contain the whole thing! The record's a culmination of the rich, full style of soulful arranging that Hayes had pioneered in his early solo work at Stax – a sound that's incredibly rich, filled with added voices and instrumentation, but totally dominated by Ike in a powerful, masculine approach to soul. Some tunes are familiar – like the album's versions of "Never Can Say Goodbye", "Close To You", "Going In Circles", "Never Gonna Give You Up", and "Need To Belong To Someone" – but they're all completely transformed here by Hayes with a bad-rapping, personal mode that's totally great. The much anticipated full length debut of Brooklyn Afro Funk and psych soul-influenced combo Ikebe Shakedown – following up their tight, promising EP on the Colemine label with an excellent self-titled set on Ubiquity! One of our favorite things about Ikebe Shakedown's style is the way they blend signature elements of classic Afro Funk and soul with more broadly influenced grooves. Heavy horns and pummeling drums, vamping guitar licks and elastic basslines are prominent and funky – but they work with more measured and spaced out material, too. It's roomy enough to let the individual musicianship shine, and the production is really great. A beautifully avant session from ECM – and a great late 70s showcase for the reed talents of the great Sam Rivers! The album's got a mixture of focus and freedom that makes it one of Sam's best from this period – a group outing that features Rivers on tenor, soprano, and flute – in a quartet that features exceptional work on trombone from George Lewis, plus Dave Holland on bass and Thurman Barker on drums. And while the music has some of the open, improvised feel of Rivers' other 70s material – it's also got some of the sharper structure that we love in his earliest 60s work too – kind of a redefinition of "new thing" modes via fresh ideas explored in the loft jazz years. The album's a real standout in ECM from the time – and titles include "Circles", "Zip", "Solace", 'Dazzle", "Images", and "Lines". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Joe Farrell's first LPs as a leader – and a stellar session that's easily one of the early high points for the legendary CTI label! Part of the strength of the record comes from the lineup – a key quintet of like-mined up-and-comers that includes Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – players who definitely know the farther reaches of jazz, yet hang just on the inside here with Joe – providing some amazing accompaniment for his lines on soprano, tenor, and flute. BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
John Morales has a wonderful talent for taking a funky track and making it sound even funkier – which he does beautifully here in this killer collection of old school tunes! Many of the numbers are vintage clubby soul from the late 70s and early 80s – and Morales has this great way of crystalizing all the best elements in the songs, and pulling them to the forefront – but all without ever ruining the integrity of the tracks that sounded so great in the first place! In other words, the work here isn't the imprint of some young DJ trying to overstate his presence – but a true music maestro who really knows what makes a club track great – a vibe that takes us back to the brilliant edits of the early NYC scene. All titles here are previously unreleased – and the massive 4CD set features titles that include Morales mixes of "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby" by Barry White, "You Got Me Running" by Lenny Williams, "Mind On You" by Level 42, "Vertigo/Relight My Fire" by Dan Hartman, "Lovergirl" by Teen Marie, "Standing Right Here" by Mannix, "Love Is The Message" by MFSB, "Let The Music Play" by Barry White, "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, "Funkin For Jamaica" by Tom Browne, "All Night" by Katzuma, "Hi Tension" by Hi Tension, "Girl You Need A Change Of Mind" by Eddie Kendricks, "Before I Let Go" by Frankie Beverly, "Got To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn, "Star Love" by Three Ounces Of Love", "You Stepped Into My Life" by Melba Moore, "Life Is A Song Worth Singing" by Teddy Pendergrass, "Walk Away From Love" by David Ruffin, "Life Goes On" by The Jones Girls, "This Time Baby" by Jackie Moore, "Turn Me Up" by Keith Barrow, "Circles" by Atlantic Starr, "Joy & Pain" by Maze, "Stay" by The Controllers, "Take Me Home" by Cher, and "Can't Live Without Your Love" by Tamiko Jones. ✨✧ Joshua RedmanCome What May ... CD
Nonesuch, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pat MethenyFirst Circle ... LP
ECM, 1984. Very Good+ ... $5.99
Arguably the last great album to come from the classic Pat Metheny collaboration with Lyle Mays – a record that's tightened up considerably from some of the group's earlier efforts, but which gives as its reward some wonderfully compelling tunes! Pat's still very much influenced here by a Brazilian fusion style – but he takes that approach, dismantles it, pulls out the best elements – and extrapolates them into a sound that's uniquely his own. Wordless vocals slide out on a few numbers, while guitar and keys sing alongside earthier percussion – in a style that's extremely evocative, and shows that even riding the top of his own success, Metheny was still more than willing to bring in new modes. Titles include "If I Could", "Forward March", "Yolanda, You Learn", "End Of The Game", and "Mas Alla". LP, Vinyl record album

Arthur RussellWorld Of Arthur Russell (3LP set) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $29.99 31.99
Music beyond description – a unique blend of disco, funk, avant garde, and dub – the wonderful world of the late Arthur Russell! Russell was a bass player by trade, but he was schooled in both classical and Eastern music forms – and brought an incredibly fresh vision to his work in New York in the late 70s and early 80s. To some, Russell was a groundbreaking disco pioneer – with an offbeat production style and unique conception of rhythm. To others, Russell was a performance artist and avant garde musician – working in circles that included Phillip Glass, David Byrne, and Robert Wilson. This mix of modes was very much a part of the post-disco, post-punk sound of New York at the time – and nobody summarized it (or allowed it!) better than Russell himself. This excellent set from Soul Jazz is one of the first to truly give him his due – and it brings together a large amount of his disco-related projects, plus a few more introspective numbers cut under his own name. The sound is incredible – unlike anything you could categorize – especially on the Russell-titled numbers – and as always with Soul Jazz, the whole thing's beautifully packaged, with rich notes on the music and the person behind it! Titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Wax The Van" by Lola, "Is It All Over My Face (Larry Levan mix)" by Loose Joints, "In The Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Pop Your Funk" by Loose Joints, "Schoolbell/Treehouse (Walter Gibbons mix)" by Indian Ocean, and "Let's Go Swimming (Walter Gibbons mix)", "A Little Lost", "In The Light Of The Miracle", and "Keeping Up" by Arthur Russell himself! LP, Vinyl record album
