The legendary alto saxophonist Paul Desmond serves up his own versions of key tunes by Simon & Garfunkel – with results that are simply amazing, and very different than the originals! The style here takes all the airy brilliance of the original S&G tunes, and turns it towards a more jazz-based mode – one that has some of the slight Brazilian undercurrents in the rhythms that you'll find on Desmond's previous two albums for CTI! The full arrangements are by Don Sebesky, who brings a great sense of balance to the set – and Herbie Hancock plays some great electric piano, in a group that also features Airto on percussion and Gene Bertoncini on guitar. But the real star of the set is Paul Desmond – blowing with that amazing tone of his – and sliding from tune to tune with effortless ease, in a way that really transforms these tunes in their instrumental readings. Not the orchestral session you might guess from the group's name, but a really righteous batch of work from Hannibal Marvin Peterson – one that really blows away most of his American and European recordings of the 70s! The set's got a really spiritual feel – definitely soaking in the Light promised in its title, with a quality that has the music building up as the album goes on – starting with dawn-like energy, which then really burns in the full light of the sun – and continues to blossom strongly over the course of the tremendous album. Other players include Michael Cochrane on piano, Deidre Murray on cello, Cecil McBee on bass, and David Lee on drums and percussion – and other tracks feature a bit of additional percussion, a touch of voice from Marcella Allen, and bass clarinet from Frank Wright. One of the most ambitious Cecil Taylor projects of the 80s – a special project performed by a large ensemble at a jazz festival in Poland – an incredible group who really expand the vision in Cecil's music! A rare soul jazz session from alto saxophonist Leo Wright – a player that we mostly know from his bossa work of the early 60s! The session's extremely noteworthy as being one of the few to feature female organist Gloria Coleman – a player with whom Wright worked on her classic 1963 date Soul Sisters, and who returns here in a very similar hard-wailing sax-and-organ mode! Wright's work on alto is incredibly deep – with a sharper bite than much of his other 60s sessions, and a gutsy down-n-dirty quality that makes the record feel like one of the best organ jazz albums at the time from Prestige. Coleman's approach to the Hammond is great too – freely skipping around with a liberated sense of rhythm, in a way that matches Wright's every twist and turn with ease – and throws a few of its own into the mix as well! We're not usually the sorts to dig tribute albums, but the mighty Mose Allison is one of our favorite talents from years back – and the lineup here do a great job of reviving some of the classic spirit of Mose, while also pushing things forward with their own creative reinterpretations of his legacy! If you don't know Allison, he was a jazz pianist first, and a singer second – the latter the quality that brought him great fame, with lots of New Orleans-inflected qualities in his vocals, and lyrics that had a nicely biting mix of contemporary wit and more vintage themes.
