Masta Ace & Marco PoloBreukelen Story Instrumentals (grey vinyl pressing) (2020 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 24.99
A rock solid collaboration between classic boombap influenced veteran producer Marco Polo and legendary rhymer Masta Ace – a thoroughly headnodding full length ode to the borough of Brooklyn! As you'd guess, this instrumentals version leaves off the contributions from the Masta, and lets us focus on Polos beats and production – on titles that include "Get Shot", "Still Love Her", "Man Law", "You & I", "American Me", "The Fight Song", "Corporal Punishment", "Wanna Be", and "Sunken Place". ✨✧ Roc MarcianoMarcberg (2LP picture disc) ... LP
Fat Beats, 2010. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $30.99 31.99
The solo debut of Roc Marciano, and a record that more than shows the MC can stand on his own – serving up edgy rhymes over beats that show a strong NYC tradition – often spare and lean in construction, but with compelling core elements that continue that tradition started by Wu-Tang so many years ago! The whole thing almost feels more 90s than you'd guess from its date of release – and we mean that as a complement – as Roc steps out amidst tracks that include "It's A Crime", "Whateva Whateva", "Raw Deal", "We Do It", "Snow", "Ridin Around", "Panic", "Thug's Prayer", "Marcberg", "Hide My Tears", and "Jungle Fever". Roc MarcianoMt Marci ... CD
Fat Beats, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Roc Marciano's holding a paint-splattered gun on the cover – and it's clear that the weapon's just there for show, as the laidback image of Roc in the driver's seat is the real representation of the sound within! Marciano has a way of delivering a lyric that sounds incredibly casual, yet also tense and urgent at the same time – a quality that's supported here by the production, which is very lean, handled by Roc himself – often with just a key element to resonate alongside his words – maybe a tenor bite here, a female vocal sample there – really just a bit of coloring alongside the main event – on tracks that include "Butterfly Effect", "Pimps Don't Wear Rabbits", "Covid Cough", "Downtown 81", "Garbage Pail Kids", "Trenchcoat Wars", and "Wicked Days". Your Old DroogDump YOD – Krutoy Edition ... LP
Fat Beats, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $31.99 32.99
A pretty fantastic chapter in the career of one of the most unique MCs to emerge in recent years – the Ukraine-born Your Old Droog, spinning out tracks here that echo the struggles of his youth as an immigrant in Brooklyn! The set's got a very freewheeling vocal style – the quick-spun lines that you'd hear in some sort of freestyle battle, but formed into songs that work wonderfully well as a whole – often with production that's so lean, you almost think you're listening to acapellas! The set features guest work from Phonte, Mack Hommy, Black Thought, and others – and titles include "New Religion", "Ukraine", "Odessa", "Uzbekistan", "Pravda", and "Kazakhstan". Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Brownout magic turns towards the world of Public Enemy this time around – in a sweet little record that serves up Latin funk instrumentals of PE classics! The music is hardly hip hop – apart from a few turntable scratches and vocal samples – and instead, the groove is deep deep funk, with plenty of Latin elements thrown into the mix – served up with a super-tight blast of horns, lots of riffing guitar, and plenty of heavy percussion! Titles include instrumental remakes of "911 Is A Joke", "Prophets Of Rage", "Fight The Power", "Louder Than A Bomb", "Shut Em Down", "Don't Believe The Hype", and "Welcome To The Terrordome". Fat Beats, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An album with a dark sort of cover, and a slightly tricky name to write down – both of which let you know that you're in for something different than usual from Pharoahe Monch! The set's heavy on guitar lines – played with plenty of ferocity and fuzz by Marcus Machado – who gives the record a quality that takes us back to some of the hip hop/metal crossover projects from years back – but with a quality that definitely puts the hip hop first, and which seems to push Pharoahe's rhymes even more with the use of the guitar. Titles include "The Magician", "666", "Fight", "Scarecrow", "The Exorcist", "Kill Kill Kill", and "Cult 45" – and the set features guest work from Cypress Hill and Smithsoneon. Ample Soul, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Spare sounds from Fat Jon, but nicely full as well – with more than enough depth to live up to the "ample soul physician" part of his name! Most of the tracks have a relatively straightforward instrumental vibe – a few key elements, but used with a nice sense of juxtaposition – not really counterpoint, but creating a lot more than you might expect through the balancing of keyboards and beats, classic 70s riffs and rhythms, and some nice use of wider scope on the production. Titles include "Only Friend", "Insert Thoughts Here", "Story Time With The Deez", "Lick My Burden", "Life Goes Swing", "Gamma Ray", "Endure The Truth", and "Unknown's Flow". LP, Vinyl record album

A 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D – and like some of the rest of the best of the decade, a set that was slightly slept-on at the time, but which has gone to have massive impact over the decades – still sounding completely fresh in comparison to bigger hits of the time! Diamond D comes from the same DITC underground as Showbiz & AG, Big L, and Lord Finesse – and like those others, when he got his time in the spotlight, he really took off – with beats that had an influence on so much more to come – and a very collaborative spirit that opens the door for contributions from Fat Joe, Mark The 45 King, Brand Nubian, Lakim Shabazz, and some of his old partners in DITC. Titles include the classic "Best Kept Secret" – with its fantastic Kool & The Gang sample – plus "Sally Got A One Track Mind", "I'm Outta Here," "Check One Two", "Freestyle", "Stunts Blunts & Hip Hop", "Pass Dat S**t", "What You Seek", "Confused", "A Day In The Life", "Step To Me", and "Shut The *!*! En VogueFunky Divas ... CD
Atlantic/East West, 1992. Used ... $2.99
Funky Divas is right – as this classic album by En Vogue is one that had the group really redefining the sound of girl group soul for a whole new generation! The girls do a wonderful job of blending together hip hop beats and warmer mainstream soul – at a level that marked one of the key bridges between R&B and hip hop in the 90s – almost making the group kind of a trans-generational healing force in African American music. After all these years the beats are still pretty great, and the vocals even better – and titles include "My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get It)", "Free Your Mind", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Give It UpTurn It Loose", "Hooked On Your Love", "Love Don't Love You", "This Is Your Life", "Desire", "Hip Hop Lover", and "It Ain't Over Till The Fat Lady Sings". The debut solo set from Fatlip – a record that showed the world that he maybe had even more to offer on his own than as a member of Pharcyde! The title might seem strange, but it's a play on the name Thelonious Monk – and that sort of wordcraft is key to the album's strength – as Fatlip works with self-deprecating wit and occasional heart-on-the-sleeve confessionals – set to production by J Swift, Edy Crahp, and Squeak E Clean – and some occasional beats by the 45 King! Tracks include "Fat Leezy", "First Heat", "The Bassline", "Today's Your Day" feat Chali 2na, "Joe's Turkey", "I Got Sh*t", "Writer's Block", "MIA", "The Story Of Us", "All On A Fly", "Freaky Pumps" feat Shock G & Humpty Hump, and "Dreams". Instant classic work from J Spaceman – a set that not only includes all the freak and fuzz of the past, but which also opens up with this earnest, honest approach to songwriting that nobody would have expected a few records before! There's some great use of larger orchestrations here – elements that work surprisingly well next to all the fuzzy guitar lines – and in a way, those larger charts are a way of updating the Spiritualized sound past some of the beats of the previous decade, and also helping some of the more personal tunes really find a way to deliver their message. One of the hippest French albums we've heard in years – a laidback blend of hip hop and jazz that really lives up to the cover's homage to the legendary Black Jazz label! The Jazz Liberatorz have a great way with a groove – a style that's openly flowing and instrumentally jazzy – a bit like the vibe we first came to love in Tribe Called Quest, but almost even better given that much of the instrumentation is played live! Most tracks have warm keyboards rolling along with the beats – and the rhythms are often gently acoustic in nature, with a depth of soul that sets these guys apart from most of their contemporaries. Guests on the record include J Sands, Lizz Fields, Sadat X, Apani B Fly, Fat Lip, and T Love – and titles include "Indonesia", "The Process", "Genius At Work", "I Am Hip Hop", "Ease My Mind", "Clin D'Oeil", "The Return", and "Speak The Language". BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A far reaching mix of material put together by Henrik Schwarz/Ame/Dixon – from the minimalist electronic experimentalists, to hypnotic film score bits, to sparsely furnished house and club sounds of more recent years – a deeply diverse tapestry of beats and sounds from the past 50 years! The compilers do an impeccable job of programming the selections here to communicate just how deeply indebted modern club tracks are to the masters of avant garde minimalism – largely by working those kind of tunes into the tracklist – and it works way better than we thought after simply reading the selections! The 2CD version features a mixed set plus an unmixed disc much of the same material and some alternate titles. Titles include "Electric Counterpoint-Fast (Movement 3)" by Steve Reich & Pat Metheny, "Lock Groove (Out)" by Liquid Liquid, "Acid Beatless" by I:Cube, "Motor Bass Gets Phunked" by La Funk Mob, "The Three Faces Of Bala" by Yusef Lateef, "The President Is Gone" by John Carpenter, "Invocation" by Moondog, "Bass-Line Generator" by Raymond Scott, "Sunday Jam" by Can and more. Manufactured, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $11.99
Never-heard work from drummer Neftali Santiago – one of the founding forces of legendary funk group Mandrill – working here alone in the mid 70s, during a time when he was taking a break from the group! The music is fantastic – the best sort of 70s funk ensemble mode – maybe in the manner of Fatback Band on their earliest records, especially in the sharpness of the basslines and drums – mixed with some of that warmer, more spiritual glow that you'd find on the first two Mandrill albums for Polydor. Neftali sings on many cuts, but also really kicks it out of the park with his work on drums – heading up a few different groups here, with instrumentation that includes sax, flute, clavinet, and even a bit of minimoog. These are all unreleased tracks, but they've got a very fully-formed sound – and the whole album is a great testament to Santiago's genius, in a way that really has us underscoring his contributions to Mandrill! Handsome Boy Modeling SchoolWhite People (clean version) ... CD
Atlantic, 2004. Used ... $1.99
Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Guests include Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, RZA, Lord Finesse, AG, Rahzel, Jazzy Jay, Qbert, Mike Patton, Casual, Hieroglyphics, Grand Wizard Theodore, El-P, John Oates, Pharrell, Kid Koala, and George W. ✨✧ Louis SmithHere Comes Louis Smith ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... $9.99
Trumpeter Louis Smith made only two records for Blue Note, but both of them are great! This set's arguably his most famous – because of a rare uncredited appearance by Cannonball Adderley, working here under the "nom de date" of "Buckshot La Funke" – and blowing with a power that beats most of his other Mercury sessions of the late 50s! But the real credit here should go to Louis Smith – who's got a sense of power and command that should have made him one of THE trumpeters of the 50s – an emerging young talent to stand alongside Lee Morgan, Nat Adderley, and other post-Fats Navarro/Clifford Brown talents on the instrument. Smith sparkles throughout with a mix of soul and modernism we really love – and an earthy way of blowing the horn that doesn't always reach its goals, but which draws even more energy from its ability to try! The rhythm section on the album's also very tight – with Art Taylor on drums, Doug Watkins on bass, and either Tommy Flanagan or Duke Jordan on piano – and tracks include "Ande", "Brill's Blues", "South Side", and "Val's Blues". A really beautiful album from Zoe's Shanghai – a group led by singer Zoe Renie Harris, and one who recorded this debut album out in the countryside in France – a setting that maybe gives the record a wonderfully laidback sort of vibe! Zoe's vocals are wonderful – lyrical, but pointed – and they move nicely through the gentle blend of keyboards, bass, and drums that support the set – live instrumentation that's a really nice change from the usual beats and keys, and which gives the songs a dynamic range that Harris really follows with her vocals. Zoe also plays a few other instruments too – piano, guitar, charango, and balafon – and titles include "Fiction Island", "Glimps Of A Roar", "Niassam", "Father", "Hibiscus Nose", "Anatomy Of An Emotion", and "Mother".
