Chuck CisselDon't Tell Me You're Sorry/Do You Believe ... 7-inch
Expansion (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A mighty sweet groove from Chuck Cissel – a singer who's got a way of soaring with the groove – which is an approach that works perfectly here! "Don't Tell Me You're Sorry" has this vibe that's maybe a bit more upbeat than the message of the lyrics – but that's a-OK with us – and "Do You Believe" is more of a funky stepper – slightly complicated in the rhythms, but still completely catchy! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Dee EdwardsPut The World On Hold/Put Your Love On The Line ... 7-inch
Cotillion/Expansion (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy ... $11.99
Two great tracks from Dee Edwards – from a time when the Detroit singer was really getting a chance to shine! "Put The World On Hold" has a sweet lyric over a soaring groove – not entirely clubby, maybe more modern soul overall – with a slightly complex set of changes that really make the tune stand out! "Put Your Love On The Line" has a really cool funky vibe – upbeat club, but with an intensity to the instrumentation, which really seems to bring out the best in Dee's vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Bobby KingIf You Don't Want My Love/Lovers By Night ... 7-inch
Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $7.99
A fantastic bit of modern soul – both cuts are great! "If You Don't Want My Love" begins with this cool moogy keyboard part over the groove – then Bobby King comes in to warm the whole thing up with his nicely measured vocal approach – really flowing along with the catchy groove! "Lovers By Night" is even better – this midtempo modern number with a slight flute trill in the orchestrations – which gives the whole thing a slight edge that's maybe a bit blacksploitation theme in the backings! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Leo's SunshippGive Me The Sunshine/I'm Back For More (limited yellow vinyl) ... 12-inch
Expansion (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $16.99
Two of the best cuts ever from this underground club act of the 70s – back to back on a 12" single! "Give Me The Sunshine" is their real calling card – a slow-stepping club number that's almost smooth enough to work for steppers, but funkier at the core too – nice and long, with a chorus that just won't quit! "I'm Back For More" is a tune that was covered more famously later by Al Johnson and Jean Carne – but which is taken here at a great slow funky pace by the group themselves! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $16.99
A rare 80s track from Detroit soul legend Ronnie McNeir – a very obscure recording with the Instant Groove combo – done in a sweet stepping modern soul mode! The tune's got a fantastic midtempo groove – and Ronnie's vocals flow out with a majesty we don't hear on his 70s records – and the single's backed with "Hold On", a slightly more upbeat 80s number with a cool spoken intro! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Gregory Porter1960 What (orig, Opolopo kick & bass re-rub) (180 gram pressing) ... 12-inch
Expansion (UK), 2012. New Copy ... $13.99
A great groove from singer Gregory Porter – the first tune that really brought him to our attention – making a debut appearance here on vinyl! The original of "1960 What" is plenty great – running for over 12 minutes, and building in this jazzy groove that's really wonderful – topped by vocals from Porter that almost rank with some of Gil Scott-Heron's best in the 70s! The remix tries for a bit more of a contemporary rhythm – nice enough, but we're more than happy just to have the original version on wax. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Warner/Expansion (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $7.99
A heavenly late 70s track from David Ruffin – a groove that bubbles with a warm sound and a modern soul vibe – almost more Leon Ware than some of David's earlier work – and we mean that in the best way possible! Laverna Mason sings with Ruffin on the chorus – and the flipside, "Still In Love With You", has a groove that's more upbeat and clubby – but still topped with more great Ruffin vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Pharoah SandersYou've Got To Have Freedom/Got To Give It Up ... 12-inch
Evidence/Expansion (UK), 1977/1980. New Copy ... $14.99
Incredible soul jazz from the great Pharoah Sanders – two great numbers from his post-Impulse Records years! "You've Got To Have Freedom" is maybe one of the greatest cuts that Sanders ever did during this time – a long-spun, really anthemic number that has this fast modal groove, rising vocals, and a tremendous tenor solo in the middle! The flipside features his own take on the Marvin Gaye tune "Got To Give It Up" – done as a funky instrumental, with a bit more electricity than you might expect – but still a very searing tenor solo in the middle! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Sylvia StriplinGive Me Your Love ... LP
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Amazing! This lost Roy Ayers-produced gem from the early 80s has not only been one of the biggest sample records of all time, but it's also become one of the holy grails of the groovy record collecting scene! It's a stellar bit of jazzy soul with the same production vibe that's characterized Roy's best work – but made all the more sublime thanks to Sylvia Striplin's beautifully fragile and soulful vocals, which sound a bit like Minnie Riperton's at times – but also has a fuller, richer quality too. The record's got arrangements by Sylvia, Roy, and James Bedford (who also recorded for Uno Melodic), and it includes classics like "Give Me Your Love", "You Can't Turn Me Away", "Look Towards The Sky", "All Alone", and a great cover of Roy Ayers' "Searchin". Spanky WilsonDoin' It (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mother/Expansion (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A bit of soul, a bit of jazz, and some nice funky touches at the bottom – a killer little set from the great Spanky Wilson! Wilson's got a really unique place in music – at one level a soul singer with enough sophistication to rival the sound of Marlena Shaw or Nancy Wilson – but at another level, an artist capable of really letting loose – hitting heavier, funkier modes that neither of those singers could ever touch! This set may well be Wilson's masterpiece – put together with excellent production and arrangements from the great HB Barnum – here coming off a great run of work for other artists in the 60s, and focusing all that experience on making Spanky sound great. Titles include "Kissing My Love", "If I Could", "You", "Don't Mess With Bill", "Light My Fire", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Hurtin", and "The Love That A Woman Should Give To A Man". This great series keeps on going strong – with over a decade's worth of excellent compilations – every one of them as wonderful as this sweet little set! ✨✧ VariousBest Of Uno Melodic Records ... LP
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to one of the greatest soul labels of the 80s – the groundbreaking Uno Melodic imprint, started by soul legend Roy Ayers as a showcase for some of his more creative projects! The vibe here follows perfectly from Roy's classic late 70s work on Polydor – and his famous album with Ramp – with a wicked blend of jazz, soul, and funk – all given a very sophisticated, righteous spin – with rhythms and instrumentation that are way different than the mainstream! That doesn't mean that these tunes aren't groovers – just that many were so far ahead of their time, they've only gotten full acclaim in recent decade – thanks to new discovery by DJs and hip hoppers, who've sampled more than a few of these cuts. The whole thing is wonderful – with a strong focus on some of the female singers that Roy was working with – and titles include "Remember To Remember" by Rick Holmes, "It's Your Love" and "I Know You Care" by Ethel Beatty, "Interlude" by Justo Almario, "Baby Don't You Know (inst)" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Just Keep My Boogie" by Jaymz Bedford, "Everybody" and "Chicago" by Roy Ayers, "Give Me Your Love" and "You Can't Turn Me Away" by Sylvia Striplin, and the cuts "Sing Me", "I Knew That Love", "Ladies Of The Eighties", and "Turned On To You" by Eighties Ladies. ✨✧ Ethel BeattyI Know You Care/It's Your Love ... 7-inch
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hot slice of early 80s, post-disco soul produced by Roy Ayers! On "I Know You Care", Ethyl uses a sexy, breathy, Minnie Riperton kind of approach that accents the deep thumping bass, drums and claps, and the scratchy guitar very nicely! Overall the track has a bit poppier of a sound than we'd usually associate with Roy Ayers, but it matches the vocals very sweetly! The flip "It's Your Love", co-written by Ayers and D.D. Bridgewater, has a similar feel, but it's actually a deeper cut with some very moody organ washes and a deeper, darker turn on vocals by Ms. Beatty. Nice, rare soul from an overlooked period in Roy Ayer's production career! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Coke Escovedo always warms our heart with his 70s classic "I Wouldn't Change A Thing" – an amazing track that has a funky fusion flavor and almost a Larry Mizell-styled groove – compressed keyboards and guitar riffing away beautifully next to Coke's conga lines – all topped by some really wonderful vocals from Coke and some backing singers. The hook is amazing – and the tune is one that never gets old! "Rebirth" is mighty nice too – warm, flowing, with lots of great keyboards – and a heavenly sound that's augmented by great production from Pat Gleeson! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Massive! Sylvia Striplin is one of the all time groove favorites – not just because she's been sampled to death, but also because she's got an amazingly captivating style of slinky soul. Two fantastic tracks by Australia's queen of soul in the 70s! "Be There In The Morning" is a gem of a cut – one that has these great jazzy changes that are a lot like Chaka & Rufus at their best – topped with vocals by Renee that really charm up the cut! "It Only Happens" is a live cut – one that's got the band sounding even funkier at the core, with a great bassline that kicks along jazzy horns – while Geyer slides into the groove in a completely sublime style, as she duets with male singer Doug Williams. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Rare later work from the lovely Ty Karim – a female soul singer who made some great 60s singles on the LA scene – then really surprised us when she reappeared for this massive club stepper at the start of the 80s! The tune's got a beat that's strong, but mellow – a bit around the pace of Gwen McCrae's "Funky Sensation" – handled here with a similar blend of funk, soul, and strings – and once it gets going, George Griffin comes into the mix – singing back and forth with Karim in a way that's like the Al Johnson duet with Jean Carn! 7-inch, Vinyl record

"Good Life" is a tune that's as upbeat as you might guess from its title – positive, upbeat, and stepping forth with a groove that's as great as its message! "Let's Groove" has a rhythm that's slightly more contemporary, but still in that midtempo mode that always seems to suit Rockie's vocals the best! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A really great early album from George Duke – quite different than his work for MPS to follow – and more in a groovy late 60s California mode! There's a vibe here that resonates nicely with some other late 60s sessions on Liberty Records – kind of an expansion of a Cali soul jazz mode, similar to the style the Crusaders were starting to go for – but colored in with some of Duke's obviously hip inclinations as well! George plays some great electric piano on the record – and other players include Ernie Watts on tenor and flute, and Jay Graydon on guitar – on titles that include "Soul Watcher", "Since You Asked", "Shades Of Joy", "Alcatraz", and "A Little Bit Of Seven". Guts bills this set as "an Afro-Tropical experiment" – but to us, the album's just a further expansion of his wonderful talents as a producer – which have really come a long way in just a few years! Guts maybe got his start in hip hop, but he's able to embrace a globe's worth of sound, especially in a project like this – which we might liken to some of the more globally-conscious records by Quantic – although Guts is working here on the Parisian scene, and maybe has even closer access to cross-cultural channels! The set includes work by plenty of guests – a lineup that includes Pat Kalla, Pinduca, Nazare Pereira, Emma Lamadji, Kandy Gura, CAtia Werneck, Djeuhdjoah, and others – on titles that include "Voyaging Bird", "Ja Nao Ha Mais Paz", "Li Dous Konsa", "Sa Ce Kado", "Kenke Corner", "Mucagiami", "Penda", and "Matadou". Easily one of the most successful albums of the British jazz rock years – but still a longtime favorite of ours as well! Mike Oldfield sets a whole new standard here for concept rock – not only by working on a single album-length composition that spans all of sides one and two, but also by playing all instruments himself – in a one man symphony of sound that's pretty darn great! The main theme of the piece will be recognizable from it's stripped-down use in The Exorcist – but we really love Oldfield's expansion on it here in a range of different overdubbed instruments, which are also sometimes processed – and then introduced by Mike in a spoken part that's one of the highlights of the album. We kinda want to hate the guy for such a hokey name like Tenderlonious – but this album's a surprisingly great little gem, and one that mixes lots of openly-blown work on flute with some sweet keyboards and other jazzy rhythms! The approach is maybe a bit like the Jason Lindh or Chris Hinze albums of the early 70s – and by that, we mean their better sets – with a flute approach that's less biting than the generation of Herbie Mann and Roland Kirk, using the instrument more in these spacious ways that are pretty darn great – especially against the heavy percussion and basslines of the 22Archestra! There's a few nice moments that almost have a Bobbi Humphrey sort of warmth – and titles include "Togo", "SV Interlude", "Expansions", "The Shakedown", "Yussef's Groove", "Red Sky At Night", and "You Decide".
