✨✧ Everything But The GirlIdlewild ... LP
Blanco Y Negro/Sire, 1988. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Everything But The Girl – smack dab in the middle of a great run during the 80s! The style here moves a bit more towards conventional pop – but there's a depth that still lives up to the group's initial genius – songwriting that's gently expressive, but never overdone – and backings that still steer clear of most of the clunkiest moments that were often holding back other groups at the time. The rich background of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt is what really makes the whole thing sparkle – that care for a song that they had right from their solo starts – still very much intact here – on titles that include "Love Is Here Where I Live", "These Early Days", "I Always Was Your Girl", "Goodbye Sunday", "Shadow On A Harvest Moon", "Lonesome For A Place I Know", and "Apron Strings". ✨✧ Everything But The GirlLove Not Money ... LP
Blanco Y Negro (Germany), 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A smashing second set from Everything But The Girl – a record that has the duo stretching out a bit more from the straight jazz leanings of their Eden debut – yet still sticking strongly in a mode that has their music moving with lots of classic influences! The songwriting is still top-shelf – not afraid to show its emotions, yet never over-mired in them either – a beautiful balance that really comes through in the vocals of Tracey Thorn. Production is a bit more mainstream, yet still light years away from the clunk of most mid 80s pop – and titles include "When All's Well", "Ugly Little Dreams", "Shoot Me Down", "Are You Trying To Be Funny", "Sean", "Anytown", and "Ballad Of The Times". Roy WoodMustard ... LP
United Artists, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
A heady, hairy solo album from the great Roy Wood – very different than his material with Wizzard, and definitely a solo set, given that Roy handled everything about the album himself – from all the vocals and instruments, to all the production and arrangements, to all the artwork on the cover! The record's also got this very unusual pastiche of styles, too – each song is very different, almost as if the album's an experiment by Wood, trying out different facets of his musical ability – and combining them into a set that's way more experimental than you'd guess for the time, or for a record on a major label. Some tracks are very tuneful and catchy, but sit next to looser, more openly-shaped work – and the balance is fantastic, a bit like a classic Todd Rundgren record – where you'd have a brilliant radio-ready track right next to a looser bit of sonic creativity. Titles include the Brian Wilson-like "Why Does Such A Pretty Girl Song Those Sad Songs" – plus "Look Thru The Eyes Of A Fool", "Interlude/Get On Down Home", "Mustard", "Any Old Time Will Do", and "The Rain Came Down On Everything". ✨✧ White PlainsMy Baby Loves Lovin ... LP
Deram/London, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A power pop powerhouse – a group who will forever be remembered for the classic title track to this set, but who also manage to deliver the goods all the way through! The whole album's a stunning showcase for the work of Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook – producers and co-writers of some of the album's best tunes – which have a jaunty, catchy vibe that really prefaces 70s AM radio, and does a great job of building a bridge forward from earlier 60s pop styles. Some of the themes are deeper, but others are lighter – and the production has this way of fusing everything together in this monstrous wall of sound, but without ever sounding as slick as mainstream pop might a few years later. Titles include the classic "My Baby Loves Lovin", plus "In A Moment Of Madness", "You've Got Your Troubles", "Today I Killed A Man I Didn't Know", "Sunny Honey Girl", "When Tomorrow Comes Tomorrow", and "Young Birds Fly". ✨✧ PrinceSign O The Times ... LP
Paisley Park/Warner, 1987. Very Good+ 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic record from Prince – a double-length set that came out at a time when the purple one was brimming over with energy and new ideas – and a step slightly in the direction of more socially conscious material! Everything that was great about Prince before the record is completely intact – his amazing ability to create funky grooves, slinky sensuality, and songs that are so catchy, they can win over audiences on both sides of the fence. But there's also some deeper elements here going on too – maybe more space for thoughtful presentation spread out over the 2LPs that comprised the original record – at a level that's only more confirmation of the never-ending genius of prince! Titles include the great title cut "Sign O The Times" – plus "Strange Relationship", "Slow Love", "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night", "Adore", "Ballad Of Dorothy Parker", "Housequake", "U Got The Look", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man", "The Cross", "Hot Thing", and "Starfish & Coffee". ✨✧ Hall & OatesH2O ... LP
RCA, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
This album is part of H&O's great comeback years in the early 80s – a time when they were mixing their white boy soul with some nice 80s groove and electro touches, often going for a spare mix of groove and vocals that's really compelling. Includes the sublime "Maneater", everything that was right with pop in the 80s – plus "One On One", "Open All Night", "Crime Pays", "Go Solo", "Delayed Reaction", "At Tension", and "Italian Girls". ✨✧ Kanye WestGraduation (3LP Collector's Edition) ... LP
Def Jam, 2007. Very Good+ 3LP ... Out Of Stock
Kanye's tightest, most heavily synth soaked set yet – and possibly the best – a leap ahead for his evolving sound! Graduation gleams and shines more than it bounces on the bottom end, and if his LP titles to date overtly suggest that this caps off a trilogy – it really goes beyond the title – it's POST Graduation! By the end of Late Registration Kanye was dabbling in hip hop symphonies (for the better) with a few too many skits, but this one's all laser beam efficiency with a human heartbeat. Kanye's moved on, well past our expectations anyway, and he better not call the next one Class Reunion. A bunch of these cuts could rule several radio formats, and they sound great in the headphones, too. To tell the truth, any modern hip hop record with a big fat (and surely expensive) Steely Dan sample is going get an automatic recommendation from us, but Graduation works for us for many more reasons than that alone. Well done, Kanye! "Good Morning", "Champion", the Daft Punk-ed hit "Stronger", "I Wonder", "Good Life", "Can't Tell Me Me Nothing", "Barry Bonds" with Lil Wayne, "Drunk And Hot Girls" with Mos Def, "Flashing Lights" with Dwele, "Everything I Am" with DJ Premier, "Homecoming" and "Big Brother".
