Art Blakey's Jazz MessengersLes Liaisons Dangereuses (Epic) ... LP
Epic, Late 50s. Very Good ... $24.99
Art Blakey's soundtrack to this fantastic French film is one of his best non-Blue Note albums ever – and it's got the additional bonus of featuring performances by the great French tenor star Barney Wilen! The tunes here are way more than just short scene-setting soundtrack numbers – and are instead some incredibly memorable numbers from these great years of the Jazz Messengers – handled with all the fire of their Blue Note sides. The date was recorded in New York – with Wilen on tenor, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Bobby Timmons on piano – and the tracks are a great mix of hardbop riffs and very catchy jazzy themes for the soundtrack. Titles include "No Problem", "Weehawken Mad Pad", "Valmontana", and "Miguel's Party". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Epic pressing, matrix ending in 1B/2B. Cover has light wear.)

Kamasi WashingtonEpic (3LP set) ... LP
Brainfeeder, 2015. Sealed 3LP Box Set ... $34.99
A modern day spiritual jazz treasure – completely wonderful all the way through, and a set you might well file proudly next to your classics from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders! The record's as epic as it promises in the title – a three volume journey in jazz, headed by tenorist Kamai Washington, who emerges here as a tremendous leader, a hell of a writer, and a rich jazz talent in every sense of the word – carefully steering a group of musicians through work that's searing, searching, and driven with a very cosmic vibe! Tunes are often modal, and never step too far outside, but always push the boundaries – and the instrumentation is a shifting mix of keyboards, piano, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums, and percussion – plus some vocal performances from Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn. You might know Kamasi from his work with Flying Lotus and Thundercat – the latter of whom plays bass on this set – but the album's very much his own, and very much jazz all the way through. The kind of record we're mighty proud to be offering – with tracks that include "Askim", "The Next Step", "Rhythm Changes", "Miss Understanding", "Leroy & Lanisha", "Re Run", "Seven Prayers", "Malcolm's Theme", and "The Message". ✨✧ TeaseTease (Epic) ... LP
Epic, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Lean, mid 80s pop soul and funk from Tease – funky and nicely thumping work from a group that features singer and songwriter Kipper Jones! Kipper would go on to bigger and brighter prospects as a hit songwriter for other artists, but, both of Tease's self-titled sets in the 80s – this one for Epic, and an earlier effort for RCA – are both unjustly slept and and stand up pretty strongly with better remembered R&B albums from the period. Some of the album reminds us of the funkier pop soul sounds coming out of Minneapolis in the mid 80s, though Tease came together from the west coast scene at the time – with beats, keys, synth, bass and soulful vocals driving it. Nice stuff that's well worth checking out! Includes "The Note", "Better Wild (Than Mild)", "Firestarter", "Body Heat", "Total Control", "Soft Music", "Baby Be Mine" and "I Wish You Were Here". ✨✧ Dave Bailey2 Feet In The Gutter ... LP
Epic, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $5.99
Hardbop albums don't get any better than this – and although drummer Dave Bailey only recorded for a brief stretch as a leader, this session's one that shows that he was a heck of a force to contend with! The record's got an intensity that easily rivals the best by Art Blakey over at Blue Note during the early 60s – but Dave's also got a slightly looser groove too – a bit more sense of humanity, and one that allows for really organic interplay between the players. There's a slight soul jazz undercurrent – especially in the piano lines of Billy Gardner – and other players in the quintet include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, and Ben Tucker on bass. The group wails on an early version of Tucker's classic "Comin' Home Baby", plus other great originals like "Coffee Walk", "Lady Iris B", and "Two Feet In the Gutter". A old favorite on the south side of Chicago! LP, Vinyl record album

A win for wily hip hip mainstay Big Boi's growing legacy as a solo star! The onetime more subtly innovative half of the Outkast – subtle as compared to Andre 3000's more flamboyant presence, anyway – succeeding mightily out front now, backed with solid, wisely timeless Organized Noize production and an impressive roster of guests, none of whom outshine Big Boi. They include Killer Mike, Snoop Dogg, Gucci Mane & Pimp C. After all these years, Big Boi still manages to spit wordy, fast raps while sounding perfectly relaxed, and comparably laidback rhymes with fierce focus. Much respect staying true to his style and staying relevant! Includes "Da Next Day", "Kill Jill", "Mic Jack", "In The South", "Order Of Operations", "All Night", "Get Wit It", "Overthunk", "Chocolate", "Made Man", "Freakanomics" and "Follow Deez". An excellent live set by the Jazz Messengers – recorded in Paris in 1958, but with a hard heavy groove that's right up there with their best Blue Note work. The group at this time – Blakey, Bobby Timmons, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, and Jymie Merritt – plays hard, heavy, and straight ahead, with no other interference from outside players – and the track list is a batch of classic Jazz Messenger standards, stretched out a bit longer than usual, with plenty of solo space! Heavy early 70s grooves from Randy California – the former Spirit guitarist, and a solid post Hendrix, post psychedelica album cut for Epic! Fellow Spirit veteran Ed Cassidy is on drums under a pseudonym, and other pseudonymous guests include Noel Redding – and all told, there's a trippy, echoey heaviness to the proceedings that's pretty sweet. Titles include "Downer", "Devil", "I Don't Want Nobody", a heavy, heavy take on "Day Tripper" and an equally wigged out cover of Paul Simon's "Mother And Child Reunion", plus "Things Yet To Come", "Rain", "Rainbow" and more. ClashClash ... LP
Epic, 1977. Very Good- ... $49.99
One of the most stunning debut albums of the 70s – and a set that burst on the scene with a sound that summed up a generation, but which had never been heard this clearly before! This self-titled Clash album was different from other landmarks of the time – work by the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and others – as the group had a sense of raw power, but also a tunefulness too – a way of pushing their message into territory that others wouldn't have reached – with tunes that were as surprisingly hummable as they were politically correct! There's a bit less Jamaican influence here than in later Clash years, but that quality is still present somewhat – and over the years, this is definitely a set we can return to again and again – with no sense of apology or outdated ideals at all. Nearly every cut's a classic – and titles include "Janie Jones", "Career Opportunities", "Police & Thieves", "Garageland", "Clash City Rockers", "I Fought The Law", "White Riot", "London's Burning", "White Man In Hammersmith Palais", and "I'm So Bored With The USA". ClashLondon Calling ... LP
Epic, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP ... $59.99
Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". LP, Vinyl record album

ClashSandinista! ... LP
Epic, 1980. Very Good+ 3LP ... $49.99
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". Johnny ColesWarm Sound ... LP
Epic, 1961. Very Good+ ... $19.99
One of the few albums ever cut as a leader by trumpeter Johnny Coles – a player who's probably best known to the world for his work with Charles Mingus, or for his other 60s session on Blue Note! This album's quite different than both of those aspects of Johnny's career – and has him blowing some sweetly soulful ballads in a quartet setting with Kenny Drew on piano, Peck Morrison on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. The feel is quite like some of Art Farmer's best of this nature from the time – laidback, but never too sleepy or sloppy – and Johnny definitely brings an edge to the record on the best numbers. Titles include some great Randy Weston compositions – "Hi Fly", "Pretty Strange", and "Where" – plus Johnny Coles' own "Room 3". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful complement to the Donovan studio albums from the late 60s – a well-recorded live date from the US. The style of the tunes is a bit different than some of their more famous album and single versions – with a relaxed approach to the work that leans a bit more on some of Donovan's folksy roots, but still features the jazzier touches that happened after his mid 60s "transformation" – thanks to plenty of great sax and flute from the legendary Harold McNair, who's a key part of the small combo on the set! Strings are king in this rare set from guitarist Herb Ellis and jazz violinist Stuff Smith – a date that's possibly more on Stuff's side of the spectrum, but which comes during a short by great run of Ellis work for Epic in the early 60s! Tracks are longer than you might expect – especially for a Smith session – with an open feel that's got an almost Verve-like energy. Ellis gets some great open solos on the date, and Stuff vocalizes on two tracks in this cool raspy way – and titles include "Skip It", "Blues For Janet", "Get Acquainted Blues", and "Hillcrest". An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. Macy GrayId ... LP
Epic, 2001. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Macy Gray's steps to a higher level on The Id – this is no "sophomore slump" to our ears – actually a helluva lot better than her big selling debut! As on her first set, Macy's vocals are wonderful – totally unique, with that warm raspy soulful style that makes her one of the most instantly recognizable soul artists since Al Green. The production is very strong too – with a sound that's new and fresh compared to most chart soul acts, but which also has its roots in the Columbia crossover sound of the late 60s, with traces of artists like Sly Stone and Janis Joplin all colliding into one cool groovy sound! Titles include "Hey Young World (part 2)", featuring Slick Rick, plus "Blowin Up Your Speakers", "Forgiveness", "My Nutmeg Phantasy" (featuring Angie Stone & Mos Def), "Sweet Baby" (featuring Erykah Badu), "Sexual Revolution", and "Relating To A Psychopath". Groove TheoryGroove Theory ... LP
Epic/Get On Down, 1995. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 30.98
The only album ever from Groove Theory – but the set that introduced the world to Amel Larrieux – whose vocal talents alone are worth the price of admission! The feel here is a bit more mainstream soul than some of Amel's later work – but given the mid 90s date of release, the sound is still plenty underground – and filled with the warmer tones and deeper soul styles that wouldn't be that common until years later when the Neo Soul scene rose to prominence. The overall package is the work of former Mantronix member Bryce Wilson – who plays some keys, and ensures that the rhythms are never too bombastic to overwhelm Amel's vocals. Titles include the massive stepper's cut "Tell Me" that hit huge here in Chicago – plus "Baby Luv", "Didja Know", "Come Home", "Hello It's Me", "Hey U", "Good 2 Me", "You're Not The 1", and "Boy At The Window". ✨✧ GunGun ... LP
Epic, 1968. Very Good ... $33.99
Big, heavy late 60s British rock from Gun – with the raw, lumbering and bluesy (or better, bloozy) power trio core that's fleshed out in the studio with horns and other more sweeping touches! It's wild stuff, a genuine precursor to heavy metal in the searing guitars, thundering drums and bass, and wild eyed vocals – we have to wonder of the label thought it was too menacing and brought in the strings and horns to make it more approachable – but it actually just makes it weirder, which we love! Titles include their hit "Race With The Devil" plus "The Sad Saga Of The Boy And The Bee", "Rupert's Travels", "Yellow Cab Man", "It Won't Be Long (Heartbeat)", "Sunshine", "Rat Race" and"Take Off". Wonderful work from The Hollies – from a time when the group was moving way past simple Brit Invasion pop – as you 'can probably guess from the cover and title! The Hollies hit a really special sort of sound here – slightly trippy, but still razor-sharp – making great use of the voice of Graham Nash, and also getting some perfect assistance on arrangements from Mike Vickers – who knows how to be ambitious with arrangements, but still keep things very focused! The tunes are overflowing with new ideas, but are still super-catchy too – and titles include "Water On The Brain", "Then The Heartaches Begin", "Rain On The Window", "Games We Play", "Lullaby To Tim", and "When Your Light Turned On". Michael JacksonBad ... LP
Epic, 1987. Very Good Gatefold ... $24.99
The third great album in the trilogy that includes Off The Wall and Thriller – and a set that still has Michael Jackson running strong at the height of his solo powers! Quincy Jones is still at the helm, and Michael more than proves that he can still come up with a pop tune without going too far over the top – catchy, compelling numbers that played well all over the world of pop – but which still hang onto just a little part of his soul roots too! That balance is a key factor to the success of this set – a record that helped re-ignite interest in Jackson's music, and introduce him to a whole new generation – while still keeping most of the older fans plenty pleased too. Titles include "Just Good Friends", "Smooth Criminal", "Bad", "Another Part Of Me", "Man In The Mirror", and "Speed Demon". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1982. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory that's somewhat more poppy, but still quite soulful overall. And yes, the success of the album meant that cuts like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat It" got plenty of play – thanks to both heavy radio and video rotation – but a few decades later, there's still a tremendous amount of depth here – on great cuts like "Human Nature", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin", and "PYT" – which all hold up nicely! Walter JacksonNo Butterflies/Ad Lib ... 7-inch
Epic, Late 60s. Very Good ... $4.99
A monster – one of the rarest singles ever by Walter Jackson, and one of the best! "Ad Lib" is a fantastic track – sad, slow, and really politically conscious – with a lyric that's almost Marvin Gaye-like in its social consciousness, and which ends with Walter speaking a really bitter monologue about urban renewal! The cut's incredible – very different than any of his other epic work – and it's backed by another cool cut, "Ad Lib", which is recorded as if it's literally ad-libbed in the studio, as a sweet jazzy vocal number! 7-inch, Vinyl record

JacksonsVictory ... LP
Epic, 1984. Very Good Gatefold ... $1.99
Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of his own records – and there's definitely more diversity here than before – a shift between gentle ballads, beat-heavy tunes, and even a few rockish/poppish moments. Of course, we should probably be crediting the other Jacksons for their help in the sound here too – as they're certainly credited on the cover – but there's also less of the "many parts as one" sound than before, so it's hard to tell how they're working together. Titles include "The Hurt", "Wait", "Torture", "One More Chance", "Body", "We Can Change The World", and "State Of Shock", the big single, which features a guest appearance by Mick Jagger. One of the earliest of bassist Alphonso Johnson's funky fusion albums for Epic! Warmly funky, but with a nice edge – with a more jazz funk rooted sound than the later, slightly heavier Spellbound! The great group of players includes Patrice Rushen is on keyboards, Benny Maupin on reeds, Lee Ritenour on guitars, Airto Moriera on percussion, Gary Bartz on sax, plus Narada Michael Walden and Ndugu Chancler on drums. ✨✧ JuicyIt Takes Two ... LP
Epic, 1985. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Probably the biggest album ever from the brother/sister team of Katreese and Jerry Barnes – working here as Juicy, in a sweet smooth 80s groove style that's mighty nice! Deodato produced the album, and it's similar to some of the other soul material he was handling in the 80s – slick and sparkling, but with a sweet jazzy touch that keeps things a lot more real than on other soul albums from the time. The Barnes siblings handle all vocals and instruments – and the record has a sweet poppy duet style that's perhaps a bit dated, but also kind of due for a revival. Features the group's great slow jam hit "Sugar Free", with lots of excellent bass pedal jamming – plus "Stay With Me", "Slow Dancing", "It Takes Two", and "Nobody But You". LP, Vinyl record album

KrystolPassion From A Woman ... LP
Epic, 1986. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Poppy passion from Krystol – a sweet 80s trio with a definite way with a hook! The set's got a well-balanced mainstream sound – one that helps the vocals find a fullness right away, either on the leads or harmonies – both woven together over the top of the tight, beat-heavy grooves! At points, there's almost a retro vibe – as if an older girl trio mode's being revived for a new 80s scene – but with a definite contemporary spin. There's a decidedly commercial appeal to the sound – but Krystol were also never too overplayed back in the day, which makes the album a nice discovery – and a great surprise when you start digging through all the potential singles on the set. A stone classic in the genre of bad-rapping female soul – and one of the key albums cut by the trio of Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash! The arrangements and production are handled by David Rubinson, who gives the set a nicely polished feel that gets a bit past some of the slight cliches that had been creeping into the girls work – a style that shows them equally well skilled at mellower numbers than at the funkier rockier tunes that were their more familiar stock in trade. Patti LabelleReleased ... LP
Epic, 1980. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A real standout in the early solo years of Patti Labelle – and a great set that reunites the singer with New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint – who'd previously worked some magic with Patti and the Labelle trio! Toussaint really grounds Patti's vocals wonderfully – giving them a solid footing that moves past the pop and disco of previous records, but which also doesn't just resort to New Orleans cliches, either. Either Toussaint or Labelle wrote most of the songs on the record – and together, they find a fresh batch of material that really helps establish the singers as one of the greatest female voices in soul. The whole album's a classic – well-balanced between mellow and upbeat numbers – and titles include "Find The Love", "Get Ready", "Give It Up", "Release", "I Don't Go Shopping", "Ain't That Enough", and "Don't Make Your Angel Cry". A real classic from the great Patti Labelle – one of the lady's first few albums as a solo act, and a set that definitely marks her step forward into a whole new sort of sophisticated soul! Some of the funkier, grittier touches of the Labelle years are in place – but Patti's also got this new sort of lead confidence, especially on the album's fuller tracks, ballads, and midtempo steppers. At a time when so many other female singers were stepping right into disco with a style that Labelle helped to invent, Patti finds a whole new way to express herself and stand strong for years to come. Titles include the killer Latin groover "Teach Me Tonight" – plus "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Monkey See Monkey Do", "Little Girls", and "Eyes In The Back Of My Head". LP, Vinyl record album
