DonovanGift From A Flower To A Garden (Epic) ... LP
Epic, 1967. Very Good- 2LP Box Set ... $11.99
One of the trippiest albums ever from Donovan, as you might guess from the title – a double-length gem that's filled with wonderfully groovy tunes! The set was cut during Donovan's killer years with producer Mickie Most in the late 60s – and it's got an instrumental feel that's even more laidback than some of his others from the time – mostly hip small combo instrumentation that features organ from Mike O'Neil, flute from Harold McNair, and vibes from Mike Carr – all done with some hip jazzy touches underneath Donovan's lead acoustic guitar – a folk-funk blend that's totally great, and which clearly set the scene for countless other imitations to come! Nobody can touch Donovan's charm at this point, though – and the album's a treasure through and through – filled with great tunes that include "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Skip A Long Sam", "Sun", "Little Boy In Corduroy", "Oh Gosh", "Under The Greenwood Tree", "Song Of The Naturalist's Wife", "Lay Of The Last Tinker", "The Lullaby Of Spring", "The Magpie", "Epistle To Derroll", "The Land Of Doesn't Have To Be", and "Mad John's Escape". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing, including the booklet. Box has split corners, wear and stains.)

✨✧ Dave Bailey2 Feet In The Gutter ... LP
Epic, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Hardbop albums don't get any better than this – and although drummer Dave Bailey only recorded for a brief stretch as a leader, this session's one that shows that he was a heck of a force to contend with! The record's got an intensity that easily rivals the best by Art Blakey over at Blue Note during the early 60s – but Dave's also got a slightly looser groove too – a bit more sense of humanity, and one that allows for really organic interplay between the players. There's a slight soul jazz undercurrent – especially in the piano lines of Billy Gardner – and other players in the quintet include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, and Ben Tucker on bass. The group wails on an early version of Tucker's classic "Comin' Home Baby", plus other great originals like "Coffee Walk", "Lady Iris B", and "Two Feet In the Gutter". A old favorite on the south side of Chicago! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dave Bailey SextetGetting' Into Somethin' ... LP
Epic, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $5.99
Heavy duty hardbop – one of three amazing Epic Records sessions cut by drummer Dave Bailey! Dave didn't ever cut many sessions as a leader – but when he did, they really cooked hard – with a quality level and sharpness of vision that easily rivals the best on Blue Note or Prestige Records at the time! In fact, this album would have been right at home on either imprint – a smoking session of soulful hardbop, with very long songs that allow plenty of room for solos by players who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Horace Parlan on piano – who are all in the group with Dave, alongside bassist Peck Morrison. There's a nicely unbridled feel to the whole set – a real "something extra" that's always made the album a treasure – and titles include the side-long 17 minute "Blues For JP", plus "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", and "Evad Smurd". Classic 30s work from trumpeter Bunny Berigan – served up here in a great LP package that showcases his talents on the horn! Players on the tunes include many who would go onto lead their own groups – Artie Shaw, Jack Teagarden, Claude Thornhill, and others – and titles include "I Can't Get Started With You", "Solo Hop", "Dixieland Shuffle", "It's Been So Long", "Let Yourself Go", "If I Had My Way", "I'd Rather Lead A Band", and "A Melody From The Sky". Ruby BraffBraff! ... LP
Epic, 1956. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A great little album from Ruby Braff – simply blown in a small combo setting, with a strong focus on Braff's sparkling tone on the trumpet! The groups vary throughout the course of the set, but all players are pretty darn great – and tunes include guitar from Steve Jordan, vibes by Don Elliott, and even some nice tenor work from Coleman Hawkins. Braff's own playing is a bit free of the overly-sentimental tones that sometimes mar his other records – and he's got a clarity and charm here that makes the record one of his best full length sets ever. Titles include "Stardust", "Indian Summer", "Here's Freddie", "Just One More Chance", "You're Lucky To Me", "Too Marvelous For Words", and "It's Been So Long". LP, Vinyl record album

Sure, the cover's a bit dated – but the politics have stayed surprisingly strong over the years – as has the music as well! Keep in mind that The Clash were waging war in the Mideast years before Desert Storm – in this searing mix of London punk, rocksteady roots, and slight new wave elements – delivered here with a surprising sense of self that really gave the whole thing a sense of wit – and more than enough legs to keep on going without collapsing under the passage of time! Natalie ColeI'm Ready ... LP
Epic, 1983. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A great re-launch for the sound of Natalie Cole in the 80s – an album that represents a shift from Capitol Records to Epic, but which also still features work from Cole's best collaborators – the soulful team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy! The Chicago duo help out on most of the best tracks here – and revamp the Cole sound of the 70s with a style that's a bit leaner, and more suited to 80s soul arrangements – but which also still has a fullness that suits Natalie best! Instrumentation is never too electric or stiff, and there's a nice use of strings – in a subtle way that's never too dated, but which underscores the classier elements in Cole's approach. Stanley Clarke produced a bit on the set, too – and titles include "Too Much Mister", "I Won't Deny You", "Where's Your Angel", "I'm Your Mirror", "Straight From The Heart", "Keep It On The Outside", and "Time Heals All Wounds". DonovanBarabajagal ... LP
Epic, 1968. Very Good ... $4.99
Donovan at his jazzy best – really picking up where Mellow Yellow left off, and pushing the jazz influences in his sound to deeper lengths! Mr Leitch is a million miles away from his Dylanesque early roots on the set – and is working in territory that's completely his own – a beautiful blend of folk, psychedelic, and jazz-based modes – handled with simple charm throughout, and performed by a group that includes funky sound library genius Alan Hawkshaw on piano, and the great Harold McNair on flute! The title track "Barabajagal" is one of Donovan's most amazing tunes of all time – a funky little number that dances around with some great heavy drums, and which also features guitar by a young Jeff Beck! Other titles include "The Love Song", "Trudi", "Atlantis", "Superlungs My Supergirl", "I Love My Shirt", and "Pamela Jo". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic, 1967. Near Mint- ... $8.99
A wonderful complement to the Donovan studio albums from the late 60s – a well-recorded live date from the US. The style of the tunes is a bit different than some of their more famous album and single versions – with a relaxed approach to the work that leans a bit more on some of Donovan's folksy roots, but still features the jazzier touches that happened after his mid 60s "transformation" – thanks to plenty of great sax and flute from the legendary Harold McNair, who's a key part of the small combo on the set! Includes "Widow With Shawl", "Preachin Love", "The Fat Angel", "Celeste", "Poor Cow", "There Is A Mountain", "Isle Of Islay", "Young Girl Blues", and "Writer In The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

DonovanHurdy Gurdy Man ... LP
Epic, 1968. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Easily one of the headiest Donovan albums of the 60s – a record that moves past the simple psychedelic pop of earlier hits, and into a range of mind-expanding themes and styles! There's a cerebral quality here that seems to take hold even on the simpler, catchier tunes – a deeply introspective approach that has Donovan working in a world that's really all his own – less concerned with hit singles, and more focused on a personal journey in music, one that ties together many strands of music borrowed from Celtic, West Indian, jazz, and folk sources. Arrangers are John Cameron and John Paul Jones – and titles include "Get Thy Bearings", "Peregrine", "The Entertaining Of A Shy Girl", "West Indian Lady", "Jennifer Juniper", "Tangier", "The River Song", "The Sun Is A Very Magic Fellow", and "Hi It's Been A Long Time". Georgie FameBallad Of Bonnie & Clyde ... LP
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
One of the few American albums ever issued by Georgie Fame – a great set of tracks from his early CBS years, put together with a package that was bound to appeal to US fans digging the Bonnie & Clyde movie! The work here is a hip mix of jazz, soul, and R&B styles – all served up with that Georgie Fame charm that made his music unlike anyone else's at the time. And although we're not sure, it appears that there's a few tracks here that might not have been issued on LP back in the UK – as the set list features 11 tracks that include "Mellow Yellow", "Bullets La Verne", "This Is Always", "Side By Side", "Blue Prelude", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", and "The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde". An excellent little album from British vocalist Georgie Fame – one that has him moving way past the simple beat group sound of his roots, into a sophisticated style that mixes jazz vocalizing, hard grooving, and lots of rock/R&B influences! Georgie's still got his Mose Allison-inspired vocal style, but the band behind him is a lot more open-ended, and grooves along freely in these great organ riffing rhythms – open-ended and very swinging on some numbers, but in a way that's different from Fame's rougher-edged roots. A rare killer from pianist Herman Foster – a player best known for his work in Lou Donaldson groups of the early 60s – but who cut some great material on his own, often with a style that's a bit more harder-edged than some of his work with larger combos! This set's a trio date, with a really bluesy undercurrent – heavy left-hand piano from Foster, who's got a wonderful sense of rhythm – served up with bass from Earl May and piano from Frank Dunlap. HeatwaveCandles ... LP
Epic, 1980. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Killer soul from Heatwave – a tight little group who definitely made the UK proud at the end of the 70s! The album's a bit more obscure than the group's first few, but the sound is very much the same – a warmly grooving approach that's neither too disco, nor too sleepy – always catchy on the hooks, and recorded with a nicely flanged style on the vocals – so that they're compressed a bit, and slide nicely in alongside the beats and keys! The mighty Rod Tempterton's still handling a good deal of the arrangements on the set, and some of the backings are orchestrated by Johnny Cameron – almost in a late 70s update of his earlier funky style. Titles include the funky cut "Gangsters Of The Groove", plus "All I Am", "Dreamin You", "Party Suite", "Posin Til Closin", "Turn Around", and "Where Did I Go Wrong", a sweet little ballad. HiroshimaGo ... LP
CBS/Epic, 1987. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Hiroshima are maybe moving a bit far from the fusion of their roots – but the overall sound here is still sweetly electric, and served up in a nice mix of eastern and western styles! If anything, the group seem even more focused on melody – not in a commercial way, but using more stripped-down instrumentation at times to focus on the special sweetness created in the compositions of leader/reedman Dan Kuramoto – who also plays keyboards and even a bit of shakuhachi on the album. There's vocals on the set – sung lead and soulfully by Barbara Long – but the main focus is instrumental, and titles include "Go", "I've Been Here Before", "311", "Obon", "No 9", "Why Can't I Love You", and "Hawaiian Electric". Ivory Joe HunterReturn Of Ivory Joe Hunter ... LP
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
One of a number of later comeback sides from older bluesman Ivory Joe Hunter – recorded with arrangements from Charlie Chalmers and Sandra Rhodes, with backing by a small combo that includes keyboards from Isaac Hayes, who gives Joe a big endorsement on the back cover! The style here is a mix of Hunter's older polished modes, complete with strings and slight country touches, plus other tracks that go for a much rootiser blues feel – clearly trying to sell Hunter to the college crowd as the "real thing", even though Joe was always a key crossover artist in the way he put things together back in the day. Titles include "Heartbreak & Misery", "Since I Met You Baby", "Your Love Is Needed So Badly", "I Need You So", "I Almost Lost My Mind", and "We All Like That Groovy Feeling". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing. Cover has some ringwear and a tracklist sticker.)

Michael JacksonOff The Wall ... LP
Epic, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
Michael, if only you'd stayed at this level! This 1979 solo album by Michael is a killer batch of soul grooves – one of his best moments ever, and a crowning cap to a stellar 70s run – both as a younger solo act, and with the whole Jackson family! Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. Amazing amazing amazing work from the to-be-coronated King Of Pop! LP, Vinyl record album

Michael JacksonThriller ... LP
Epic, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 20.98
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory that's somewhat more poppy, but still quite soulful overall. And yes, the success of the album meant that cuts like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat It" got plenty of play – thanks to both heavy radio and video rotation – but a few decades later, there's still a tremendous amount of depth here – on great cuts like "Human Nature", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin", and "PYT" – which all hold up nicely! One of our all-time favorite solo tracks by Michael Jackson – that incredibly catchy tune from the Thriller album – the one with that groovy vocal "Mama Say Mama Sa Ma Ma Ku Sa" chorus! It always sounds a bit silly, but that's part of the appeal – and the tune has a jazzy groove that's quite different than most of Michael's other work! 12-inch, Vinyl record

One of the few US releases by R&B singer Paul Johnson – formerly with the group Paradise before he recorded this debut album as a solo act for Epic. The album's a mixture of quiet storm and slow jam styles – a good fit for Johnson's vocals, which aren't that over the top, but do fuse well with the arrangements on the set. Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the best cross-cultural influences going down on the west coast scene of the time – a kind of color-blind quest for the groove that comes across with a really righteous power!
