Mel Torme gives Barbara McNair some mighty big props in the notes to this one – and hearing the set, we certainly have to agree! The record may well be McNair's most dramatic of the 60s – still a mix of vocal and jazz styles with a touch of soul – but also done with a bit more dynamism in the arrangements, and sung in a bold, powerful voice that's quite different from some of her more easy-going Motown recordings of later years. A good portion of the work here is from 60s shows, but Barbara sings the tunes with a personal style that gets past their roots – and backings are by Ralph Carmichael, in a way that's sweet one minute, swinging the next! The earliest roots of Jackie DeShannon – and material that's very very different than her famous Cali pop material of the 60s! Jackie here is working live on radio in Aurora, Illinois – performing as the young country singer Sherry Lee, and with a presence that must have been wonderful to catch on the airwaves – very spontaneous, and very much in the spirit of classic radio country work by artists like Hank Williams, The Louvin Brothers, or other 50s artists who worked in a similar broadcast mode! Don't think of the record as a Jackie DeShannon album, think of it as a lost nugget from a young female country singer – and enjoy the mix of tunes that includes "Blue Monday", "Sweet Dreams About You", "A Satisfied Mind", "I'm Crazy Darling", "Why Baby Why", "Waiting", "You're The Reason I'm In Love", "I'm Counting On You", "Love Love Love", "Baby Honey", and "You Don't Owe Me A Thing". A set that's definitely all woman – thanks to the sexy sounds of Monica Lassen on vocals! The singer works at a wordless level here – breezily scatting alongside these slinky, jazzy lines from The Sounds – a Japanese group who've clearly drunk deep from the well of bossa nova and European soundtrack influences of the 60s – and find a way to create their own small combo variation of those styles! The music has bits of organ, guitar, flute, and even what feels like electronics at points – and Monica's often more than content to step back, and let the group groove, then come in for a sigh, a moan, or a lighter vocalized passage. Titles are as sexy as the image on the cover – and include "Three Woman", "Love Touch", "Whimper", "Incitation", and "Happiness" – plus the long "Tie In/Double Bed/Enjoy Time". An excellent session – very much in the mode of Eddie's groundbreaking work from the early 70s, when he was mixing together some incredibly complicated piano lines with newer styles of Latin jazz. The album's about half vocal, half instrumental – with a very strong jazz component that's made even better through the percussion work of Milton Cardona and Francisco Aquabella. Eddie's piano is the real treat, though – and it's incredible on tracks like "Just A Little Dream", "Azucar", "La Libertad", and "Verdict On Judge Street". The album does have one semi-weak number called "Humpty Dumpty", a smoother soul track – but you can skip over it and enjoy the rest of the great jazz! LP, Vinyl record album

Joy Dan's a little-known singer from Chicago – but she confidently takes on a variety of soul hits here – working with arrangements that are somewhat modern, but still earthy enough to live up to the indie soul look of the set! Joy's vocals are a bit shaky at times, but that's the great thing about them – as she makes her way through more familiar soul covers – slowly unmaking their cliches as she does so! Think of the album as an appealing lounge set caught at a small club – and enjoy the record's versions of tracks that include "For Your Precious Love", "Midnight Train To Georgia", "Try Me", "Release Me", "Misty", "Stand By Me", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and "Unchained Melody". Ed Townsend's best known as a famous songwriter and producer – whose work through the 60s and 70s made him more than a bit of green – but this early album has Ed trying his pipes as a male vocal lead, singing in a style that's smooth and mellow, a bit in the vein of Jesse Belvin, and really sounding great overall! Orchestrations are by Nelson Riddle, and the album's got a gentle swing that we really enjoy – Ed singing over some lesser known tracks, and bringing a raspy soulfulness to the more familiar ones. Really wonderful sounds from Meiko Kaji – an actress as well as a singer, one who was famous for her Nikkatsu work at the start of the 70s – and who delivers the songs here with a similar sense of darkly moody drama! The music often mixes rock touches with larger arrangements – and the recording quality is completely sublime – so that Meiko's voice is right out front in the mix, really commanding the proceedings with a vibe that's expressive, but in ways that are very different than Japanese female vocals from the decade before. You might recognize her voice from use of her music by Quentin Tarantino – but you hardly need that reference to enjoy this set – a wonderful album full of gems that include "Wara No Ue", "Onna Somuki Uta", "Onna Hagure Uta", "Nigori Onna", "Urami Bushi", "Betuni Doutte Koto Demo Nishi", "Hitora Kaze", and "Onna Kawaki Uta". A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as played-out as some of Curtis' bigger hits. The production style's still the same – with plenty of rumbling funky soul, arranged by Rich Tufo in that classic Curtom mode – and you can't beat Curtis' vocals on songs like "Mother's Son", "Love Me (Right In The Pocket)", "A Prayer", and "Ain't No Love Lost". One of our favorite Metheny moments ever – and one of the few albums of his that we can go back to, and still enjoy heartily! The album's wonderfully stripped down – and features only guitar by Metheny, keyboards by Lyle Mays, and percussion and vocals by Nana Vasconcelos, all blended together with some sublime ECM production by Manfred Eicher, who's really got "the sound" in full effect here, pillowtizing all the instrumentation into wonderful washes of color and tone. Incredible work from tenor player Ralph Moore – an under-discovered classic from the 80s that we enjoy listening to as much as most of our favorite albums from the 60s! Moore's a wonderful player in direct lineage with Hank Mobley – and the tracks on this set are warmly grooving, very soulful numbers that sparkle with a fresh creativity you wouldn't expect from the date. Other players include the great Kenny Washington on drums (who's a big part of the reason for the success of this album), plus Benny Green on piano, Rufus Reid on guitar, and Brian Lynch on trumpet. A contemporary legend in Latin music – one that was done in collaboration with the film of the same name – organized by Ry Cooder, directed by Wim Wenders, and put forth as a reminder to America that Cuban culture was still going strong, even decades after we turned our backs on the nation! The "social club" in the title is well-put – as there's a relaxed, easygoing approach to the music here – warmly collaborative efforts from some of the greats of the scene in Havana – many of whom were able to enjoy renewed global attention, thanks to the efforts of the record and film. Great stuff – and a key link between the early work of the Jackson 5 on Motown and Michael's later grooves with Quincy Jones! The Gamble/Huff team give the group a smooth sweet sound – definitely in a dancefloor mode, with some of the bassy riffs of Michael's Off The Wall album, but also with all the sweet catchy soul of earlier years – a really great blend that makes the album a great winner in the group's post-Motown years! Stitt remembers Bird? How could he ever forget him – given the fact that as an alto saxophonist, Stitt always had to work hard to avoid any comparisons! Seriously, though, this is a nice set of boppish material that moves past the usual Charlie Parker tribute – and in fact, none of the tracks are by Bird – and Sonny blows both tenor and alto – in a great group with Frank Rosolino on trombone, Dolo Coker on piano, Allen Jackson on bass, and Clarence Johnston on drums. Forget the Charlie Parker reference in the title, and lay back and enjoy the tunes "Watch What Happens", "Waltz For Diane", "Streamlined Stanley", and "I Remember Bird". LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked Motown nugget from the early 80s – the smoking debut of Gene Van Buren! Gene's a fully-formed artist right from the get-go – writing and producing the set with a rich, mature groove that's totally great – some of the upbeat funky soul tracks that were Motown's biggest asset in the early 80s, mixed with some even better mature moments that are especially wonderful – that sort of all-adult soul approach the label would take on more strongly later in the decade, showcased beautifully here by Van Buren's talents. The groovers have a bit of electro touches – usually some mini-moog keyboards – and the mellower ones have a warmer sound that really rounds things out nicely. Damn great work from the early 80s Nigerian scene – music that's evolved strongly past the Afro Funk of the 70s, and often has the same electro soul sound as work from the US at the time! These cuts are unabashedly upbeat, and aimed at the dancefloor – full of the kind of basslines and keyboard lines that folks treasure in rare American boogie singles – and topped with English language lyrics that give these tunes a really universal appeal! There's a nicely offbeat vibe to the cuts at times – almost a P&P club sort of style – which makes the whole thing a real treasure for any fan of funky club music, not just Nigerian sounds. A really cool album from The Fugs – one that almost comes across as more of a multimedia effort than their earlier records – yet still delivers all the wit and politics of those gems too! The set was recorded at the Fillmore East, and features a few spoken parts in between some songs – the group are clearly enjoying that freedom that Warner was giving groups on record – mixed with some great raw numbers that equal their ESP material, plus some augmented elements put together by Warren Smith, which include guest organ from Richard Tee! As perfect a summation of the Teddy Pendergrass genius as you'll ever hope to find – a magnificent maturation of that incredible sound he first forged with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, set forth in even more confident, sophisticated soul territory! As with the Melvin albums, there's a nice mix here of sultry ballads and groovers – the latter of which are changing with the Philly modes of the time, but still very much at the top of their game – light years from clunky commercial work, or easy dancefloor fodder. The album's stunner is "Love TKO" – a killer mellow soul track that's not only one of Teddy's best, but which has enjoyed recent popularity due to a heavy bit of sampling by hip hoppers – but the whole thing's great, and other titles include "Take Me In Your Arms Tonight", "Let Me Love You", "Girl You Know", "Is It Still Good To Ya", "I Just Called To Say", and "Can't We Try". A host of raw rockers that were originally served up as 7" singles – all blasting out together with a tremendous amount of power – as if you're enjoying a night with choice cuts all stacked up in the jukebox pictured on the cover! The set's way more than any sort of oldies collection – as the music here is heavy on guitars, and effortlessly moves between blasts of fuzz and cleaner lines – sometimes instrumental, sometimes vocal – all with a sense of urgency that's delivered in the short space of the few minutes that would fit on a vintage 45! Richard Hawley curated the set, but even if you're not hip to his name, you'll find plenty here to dig if you love rare cuts of this sort – and as usual, Ace did a superb job with the presentation, sound quality, and notes! The most upbeat groovers from one of the rarest soul labels of the 60s – Washington DC's Shrine Records label – a small imprint who recorded some mighty fine singles that have been the gold standard for collectors for years! The company's output was quite small, and the label, as the title implies, never got much exposure at the time – but overall, Shrine's work is extremely great, and the tracks on this set soar with the best Philly and New York soul of the time, especially the male vocal group numbers, which are especially strong. Think what you want about DJ Quik, the west coast hip hopper is a key part of the sound of his scene in the 90s – and also maybe one of the most dedicated to the legacy of old school funk as well! This album's overflowing with wonderful samples – work by Cameo, Parliament, One Way, Rick James, The Blackbyrds, and others – all wonderful choices from Quik in the studio, and a way to ground his sometimes-dated rhymes with a really classic vibe – so much so, the album's maybe even more enjoyable now from the perspective of time – as a filter of the 70s through a 90s west coast style! A holy grail of funky music – the one and only album ever cut by Marie Queenie Lyons, a heck of a hard soul singer who's best known for her rare funky 45s! The album is stunning – every bit as great as any of Marie's singles, and with an incredibly unified sound that should have made the album an instant soul classic as soon as it was released. Think Marva Whitney, Vicki Anderson, Lyn Collins, and other sock-soul divas – and you've only got part of the picture, as Marie really pushes things over the top, and enjoys some great raw production that really sends the whole thing home! Plus, some of the tracks on the set were written by a young Don Pullen, who supposedly also played on the record – in a rare funky appearance in his pre-avant jazz days. A warmly robust piano trio and one with a really magnificent sound – a real richness that comes from the subtle command of the keys expressed by Roberto Olzer – a player who has this way of being gently emotive, through a great sense of tone – a quality that's also underscored by superb work on bass from Yuri Goloubev! The pair aren't exactly household names in jazz, but they work here alongside excellent drums from Maruo Beggio – in a beautiful set that really lives up to the long legacy of sublime piano trio recordings we've enjoyed from the Sawano label! The set's also got some really great tracks that round out the set – originals that include "Charisma", "La Luna E I Falo", "Little Requiem", "La Bella Estate", and "Le Vieux Charme" – plus a great take on the Ryuichi Sakamoto tune "Bibo No Aozora", and other titles that include "Seaward", "Beautiful Love", and a version of Poulenc's "Adagio" LP, Vinyl record album

Cool quirky post-punk work from The Waitresses – a group who maybe were never as big as Blondie or Romeo Void, but shared a very similar space at the time! This album's best known for the classic "I Know What Boys Want" – a naughty little number that got plenty of dancefloor and radio play back in the day – but the whole album's an equally enjoyable romp, with lots of jagged guitars, sharp-edged rhythms, and cool snot-nosed vocals from Patty Donahue! One of the last really compelling records ever done by Mike Westbrook – a large group session that shifts effortlessly between funky moments and some more adventurous playing! The album's a suite of tracks that run through a bit more moods than we're used to hearing on some of Westbrook's earlier records – and the overall approach is varied, but in a way that's really enjoyable, and doesn't get bogged down in some of the repetitive themes that Westbrook could sometimes fall in love with. The real star of the record is John Surman, who solos often on baritone, soprano, and bass clarinet – and titles include "Sleepwalker Awaking In Sunlight", "Outgoing Song", "Tender Love", "Construction", "View From The Drawbridge", and "Pistache". A really ear-opening set – one that introduces us to a world we'd never have heard otherwise – filled with music that's maybe even groovier and more evocative than we could imagine! There's loads of very trippy styles going on here – almost as if the whole Mongolian scene had gone psychedelic during the 60s – later than the rest of the world, and with a different flavor that mixes regional elements with cool guitar lines, fuzzy production, and all sorts of rock psych elements from the 60s that are pulled back out, and reformed in weird ways for these tunes! In fact, the sound's so unique, we're not sure it's even real – but we can hardly let that get in the way of us enjoying gems that include "Western Mongolian Folkmix", "You Got So Big My Son", "The Blue Comb", "Listen Up Galaxy", "Music Magic", "Starsong", "Young Couple", "Circle Dance", and "Beauty". Percussionist Sabu Martinez is one of the all-time greats of Latin music – and this record is probably the rarest he ever cut! The album came out of Sweden, where Sabu was residing during the 70s – enjoying some success as an expatriot jazz player in the European scene. The album mixes Latin grooves and hard funk in a way that's rarely been duplicated, and which has ensured Sabu a place in the funk hall of fame for all time! Breakbeat fanatics have always sought out the album for the cuts "All Camels Hump" and "My Cristina" – but the whole thing's a stunning batch of hard percussion grooves, and it's well worth its rare reputation! A nice collection of Percy's classic work for Specialty Records from the 50s – issued here in a full LP package from 1970, when Percy was enjoying a bit of a revival. The work's a strong batch of tunes with a sophisticated smooth and bluesy feel – clearly a strong percursor to soul work in the 60s, as can be heard on tracks like "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Lost Mind", "Memory Pain", "What A Fool I Was", "Lost Love", and "The River's Invitation". Motorhead at their thunderingly heavy, breakneak speediest, shrapnel-voiced best! For a band that's best enjoyed for it's raw and direct brute force and belligerent swagger, it's still important to approach with a sense of perspective – and know that before Motorhead, heavy rock just did not sound like this. Many, many tried to follow Lemmy's lead afterwards, with varying creative success, but we'll always go back to the trailblazers. Insanely wonderful work from Shango Dance Band – a group headed by onetime Fela Kuti bandmate Ojo Okeji – whose bass work here is worth the price of admission alone! Okeji was a key part of Fela's Koola Lobitos, until leaving the group in 1968 – and taking some of the best players with him – to form the amazing Shango Dance Band, which is this incredible bridge between older Afro jazz modes and the new funk styles to explode in the 70s! At some level, the groove's a bit like that which Fela was percolating at the start of the 70s – but there's also some jazzier currents on the horn solos, especially the trumpet – and Okeji's bass is very far up in the mix – dipping, turning, and crafting these amazing grooves throughout – with a snakey vibe that's completely sublime – as is the entire record. And sure, there have been plenty of Afro Funk reissued on the market in the past decade or so – but few as essential as this one – or as enjoyable! A classic album of jazzy tunes from the British pop scene of the early 80s – and the kind of work that really helped set the stage for the later Acid Jazz movement in London – but which is equally enjoyable as one of the loveliest moments in the post-punk generation!
