✨✧ EmbryoAuf Auf ... LP
Madlib Invazion, 2021. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The first album in many years from German jazz legends Embryo – and a set that hardly has them missing a beat at all from their famous work of the 70s! Part of the strength of the record might be its placement on Madlib's record label – but from the notes, it seems that all the credit is due to the group themselves – still doing a fantastic job of mixing together global elements and long-drawn jazz explorations – served up here on Fender Rhodes, vibes, guitar, saxes, flute, and plenty of percussion – sometimes with a bit of vocals, but usually in a way that's more chanted or instrument-like – which only seems to further the global explorations in the music! A stunning addition to their legendary catalog – with titles that include "Baran", "Januar", "Alphorn Prayer", "Besh", and "Yu Mala". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is bent a bit at the bottom left corner.)

✨✧ EmbryoEmbryo's Rache ... LP
United Artists/Loneos Editions (Netherlands), 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Early prog jazz genius from the mighty Embryo – and an album that perfectly fuses their love of world rhythms and electric jamming grooves – at a level that made them one of the coolest groups on the European scene at the time! Core work here is by a trio – and the percussion by Edgar Hofmann ranges from playful to hypnotic – with heavy drums and basslines crafting some incredible rhythms that spin out strongly – sometimes jamming, sometimes a bit looser – and often topped with great work on flute by Hansi Fischer, and this ultra-cool Leslie piano played by Christian Burchard – which has a nice fuzzy sound. The album's got lots of other sweet organ and mellotron lines – and Hofmann also plays soprano sax and violin as well – on titles that include "Tausendfussler", "Time", "Revenge", "Espagna Si Franco Finished", "Try To Be", and "Change". ✨✧ Herbie MannStone Flute ... LP
Embryo, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $13.99
Stone flute, or stoned flute, the album's got a really laidback feel – a sound that's very open-ended, and quite different from some of the crossover classics Herbie Mann was cutting a few short years before! The record's got the darkly brooding feel of some of his other work on the Vortex label – and features a subtle blend of softly-blown flute with guitar from Sonny Sharrock, vibes from Roy Ayers, and bass from either Miroslav Vitous or Ron Carter. There's some light added strings on most tracks, but they're arranged by William S Fischer – in ways that make them more sly sense of darkness in the background than standard sleepy accompaniment. Herbie and Fischer are a perfect combination here, one that makes for a surprising degree of depth – on titles that include "Waltz For My Son", "Miss Free Spirit", "Flying", "In Tangier", and "Pendulum". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Die-cut cover has a promo sticker and is nice.)

✨✧ Danny ToanFirst Serve ... LP
Embryo, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Spacey fusion from guitarist Danny Toan – sometimes upbeat, sometimes laidback, and always pretty soulful! The record's got a feel that's a bit different than some of the better-known fusion artists of the time – almost more like an instrumental soul album in points, with Danny's guitar filling in for the vocals. Most tracks have keyboards – Fender Rhodes or Arp – which really set the mood nicely – and one track features some guest work from Alphonse Mouzon. Titles include "Killian", "Double Fault", "Flightus", "Kunta Kinte", and "Snapper City". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has clear tape on the top seam, light ring wear.)

✨✧ Herbie MannMuscle Shoals Nitty Gritty ... LP
Embryo, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Herbie Man gets nitty and gritty at the Muscle Shoals Studios – bringing his funky flute to the southern powerhouse of sound, and hitting some of his most soulful grooves of the time! The approach here is really great – definitely cast in the southern soul mode that was associated with Muscle Shoals, but also done with the looseness of a jazz record – so that the sound's a fair bit different than similar projects coming out of the scene at the time. Most tracks are long and flowing – with lots of sweet electric elements that include vibes from Roy Ayers, guitar from Eddie Hinton, and keyboards from Barry Beckett. Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love slide in on horns – but Herbie's flute is still the main solo element, and it gets plenty of space to stretch out with some great trippy grooves! Titles include Edwin Birdsong's "Can You Dig It?", plus Sonny Sharrock's "Blind Willy", and Herbie's own "Panama Red's Panama Hat" and "Claudia Pie". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the original die-cut cover – with a large corner cut, light wear, and some aging.)

✨✧ Herbie MannPush Push ... LP
Embryo, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Herbie Mann's biggest albums – and one of his funkiest too! The cover's a bit of an off-putter – although it probably helped sell the record, back in the day – but the grooves are as rock-solid as anything that Herbie cut at the time – tight, focused, and a perfect showcase for his soulful work on flute! Tracks have a groove that's somewhat relaxed – almost a shift from the soul jazz vibe of Mann's earlier Atlantic work into some of the freer modes that were showing up in the CTI generation – and the players on the date include both Duane Allman and Cornell Dupree on guitars, Richard Tee on keyboards, Chuck Rainey on bass, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, and Bernard Purdie on drums – a player whose work here is definitely a key part of the sound! All tracks are long and slinky funky – and titles include "Push Push", "Spirit In The Dark", "What's Going On", "What'd I Say", and "Never Can Say Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the die-cut gatefold cover, with some ringwear, edge wear, and a cup-ring stain in front.)

✨✧ Brute ForceBrute Force ... LP
Embryo, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The one and only album by this righteous funky combo from Ohio! Although Brute Force were an American group of the late 60s, they've got a sound that brings in traces of the African rhythms that were bubbling under at the time – similar to some of the best London groups of the post-colonial years, like Cymande, Demon Fuzz, or Asiko. There's often a jagged and jazzy style on the bottom of the grooves, topped with brighter horn flourishes, and combined with a vocal approach that has some slight folksy touches – very hip, progressive, and as righteous as you'd expect from the cover! Sonny Sharrock sits in on some tracks, and the titles include "Some Kind Of Approval", "Doubt", "Ye Le Wa", "Do It Right Now", "The Deacon", and "Monster". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ William S FischerCircles ... LP
Embryo, 1970. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Super-righteous work from William S Fischer – the ultra-hip arranger who was one of the most important forces in the late 60s underground soul jazz scene! Fischer is best known for his work with Eugene McDaniels, Eddie Harris, and Les McCann – almost akin to the sorts of collaborative influence that David Axelrod had with Cannonball Adderley or Lou Rawls, but with a style that was decidedly darker, and trippier. This album's one of the few ever recorded under his own name – originally done for the tripped-out jazz imprint Embryo, and featuring a unique blend of moog, strings, funk, and soul! Billy Cobham plays drums and percussion on the set, Bill Robinson sings on a few numbers, and Walter Sear adds in some extra moog next to Fischer's own work – but the real brilliance comes from the overall concept – funky one minute, laidback and trippy the next, very much in the spirit of some of the righteous crossover funk, soul, and rock recordings coming from McDaniels and Axelrod at the time! Titles include "Patience Is Virtue", "Saigon", "Green Forever", "Chains", "Electrix", "Capsule", and "There's A Light That Shines". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jerry NovacFifth Word ... LP
Embryo, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Weird and wild sounds from Jerry Novac – an artist who fits right in with the openly progressive style of Atlantic's Embryo label at the start of the 70s! The tracks are long and sometimes trippy – and Novac plays piano and organ, and adds vocals – while Buzzy Feitan and Eric Gale add in some guitar – next to drums from John Dzubak. Titles include "I Am A Classified Freed Speak", "Beyond The Look", and "Present 2nd Ave". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Phil WoodsPhil Woods & His European Rhythm Machine At The Frankfurt Jazz Festival ... LP
Embryo, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A stunner of an album – light years ahead of Phil's earlier work in America – a bit funky at times, with some really open-ended modern sounds! The album features Phil with his incredible European Rhythm Machine – a group that includes Gordon Beck on electric piano, Henri Texier on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – and the fat basslines of Texier are a wonderful match for the keyboards of Beck – both perfectly balancing things out on the groove! Tracks are long, and a mix of hard out soloing with some nice rhythmic grooving – almost in a modal fusion mode, but not quite – and titles include "Josua", "The Meeting", "Freedom Jazz Dance", and "Ode A Jean-Louis". ✨✧ Black SabbathMaster Of Reality ... LP
Vertigo, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The third album by Black Sabbath – the album that put the heavy in metal – one of the most influential rock albums of all time and a record that finds Sabbath at absolute peak perfection! This is the one that set the Sabbath style in stone, honing in the the heavy riffs, thundering drums and eerie mood perfectly. Includes the ultra classics "Sweet Leaf" and "Children Of The Grave", plus "After Forever", "Lord Of This World", "Solitude", "Into The Void" and the instrumentals "Embryo" and "Orchid". ✨✧ McDonald & GilesMcDonald & Giles ... LP
Cotillion, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A stunning spinoff from the first incarnation of King Crimson – a brilliant record from the team of Ian MacDonald and Michael Giles – both of whom move into territory that's quite different than their work with the more famous Fripp-led group! There's definitely elements here of the music the pair brought to King Crimson – but the songs are looser, more personal, and often have more jazz-rock elements in the mix – which can even result in some cool funky passages at times that are a quite soulful surprise! The album also features strong lyrical contributions from Peter Sinfield, who also sounds a bit hipper here – and work from Steve Winwood, who may well be one of the forces for the more soulful side of the spectrum. Lots of nice flute lines – almost Harold McNair-ish at times – and titles include "Suite In C", "Flight Of The Ibis", "Is She Waiting", "Tomorrow's People The Children Of Today", and "Birdman". ✨✧ Velvet UndergroundLoaded ... LP
Cotillion, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The end of the road for the Velvet Underground – but a set that's also one of the group's best-remembered albums too! The record marked a big shift for the group – a move to Atco from Verve, continuing to work without John Cale – and the sound is possibly more rockish and straight ahead than some of their previous efforts (certainly compared to White Light/White Heat) – but always with that dark edge that Lou Reed could bring to the music! In a way, the whole thing's almost a recasting of all the advances made in 60s rock, but seen through a lens that shows the darker corners and shadows that have crept up alongside – that kind of subtle, yet extremely powerful quality that Reed would bring to his long run of solo albums in the 70s – but served up here with more of an edge, in the definite VU fashion. Titles include the seminal classics – "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll", plus "Cool It Down", "New Age", "Head Held High", "Lonesome Cowboy Bill", "Oh Sweet Nuthin", and "I Found A Reason". ✨✧ Miroslav VitousMountain In The Clouds (Infinite Search) ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great early album by this famous 70s bassist – originally issued as the album Infinite Search on Embryo, but expanded here with the additional track "Cerecka". One of the greatest moments ever from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a very cool album recorded for the trippy Vortex label! The lineup here has Miroslav working with key help from the American underground – piano from Herbie Hancock, tenor from Joe Henderson, and drums from Jack DeJohnette – plus added guitar from John McLaughlin, who seems to have the same spacey sensibilities as Vitous! Henderson really opens up too – in that fluid style of his post-Blue Note work on Milestone – and obviously Herbie's a great one for a set like this too – hitting some of the spiritual modes of his Warner work. Some tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Freedom Jazz Dance", "Infinite Search", "I Will Tell Him On You", "Mountain In the Cloudes", and "Epilogue". LP, Vinyl record album

The materail was all recorded in New York, between the years 1947 and 1950 – and players include Russell Jacquet on trumpet (and occasional vocals), JJ Johnson, Joe Newman, Henry Coker, Ray Perry, and Sir Charles Thompson. The set features 16 tracks in all, and titles include "Jet Propulsion", "King Jacquet", "Embryo", "Riffin At 24 Street", "Slow Down Baby", "Hot Rod", and "You Gotta Change". LP, Vinyl record album

Harvest/Future Shock (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A very cool collection of early work on Harvest Records – a wonderful showcase of the way that branch of EMI Records was helping to create some crucial changes on the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The album's maybe most noteworthy for its inclusion of the rare Pink Floyd song "Embryo" – but the whole thing's great, and filled with hip gems that include "Octopus" and "Baby Lemonade" by Syd Barrett, "Rainmaker" and "Soulful Lady" by Michael Chapman, "Song From The Bottom Of The Well" and "Lady Rachel" by Kevin Ayers, "October 26" and "Grass" by The Pretty Things, "Druid One" by Third Ear Band, "Breathe" by Roger Waters, and "Careful With That Ax Eugene" by Pink Floyd. ✨✧ Flaming LipsEmbryonic ... LP
Warner, 2009. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A late masterpiece from the Flaming Lips – one of their most unique and uncompromising records since they became leftfield hitmakers – and a record that works best as a whole! Embryonic is a grower, and the first record since The Soft Bulletin which, to our ears anyway, doesn't seem to have any illusions of a crossover ready single in the lineup. It's really a space rock record with fuzzy guitars and echoing noisiness, and a confident step out of "Do You Realize?" style speaks-to-everyone art pop, and into more of a dissonant, messy sound. It's a real thrill for us to see a longtime favorite not only get over into the mainstream consciousness and stay there for years, but to continue to challenge and innovate while they're hanging out there. Titles include "Convinced Of The Hex", "The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine", "Evil", "Aquarius Sabotage", "See The Leaves", "Your Bats", "Powerless", "Scorpio Sword", "Watching The Planets" and more. Jefferson AirplaneSurrealistic Pillow ... LP
RCA, 1967. Very Good ... $24.99
Early genius from these Bay Area stalwarts – one of the greatest rock records of its time! Surrealistic Pillow is the second Jefferson Airplane album, but they took a number of huge creative leaps in the 8 months or so between their debut record and this one. This one is where they're joined by psych siren Grace Slick, but it's not just the line-up change that sets it apart. Surrealistic Pillow is a perfect title, as it's comforting and disorienting at the same time. It's also the magical confluence of wildly different spirits – with standout contributions by the entire band. Titles include the seminal "White Rabbit" – plus "Embryonic Journey", "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds", "DCBA 25", "How Do You Feel", "Today", "She Has Funny Cars", and "Plastic Fantastic Lover". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover is nice.)
