✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldDream Dancing ... LP
Pablo, 1972/1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Ella swings a set of tunes by Cole Porter – her first tribute to the songwriter since a Verve songbook session of the 50s – but done with some very classic-styled backings from Nelson Riddle! Both Riddle and Ella had come up with some nice groovy elements in their music by the time of this early 70s session – and the album really benefits from those changes – picking up some of the slight bounce and undercurrents of grooviness that Fitzgerald showed on late 60s records for MPS and Reprise, which makes for some really fresh moments on these Porter tunes! The set's hardly a simple rehash of standard modes – and is more a groovy Riddle/Fitzgerald swinger overall – on tunes that include "Down In The Depths", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Anything Goes", "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", "At Long Last Love", and "C'Est Magnifique". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla ... LP
Reprise, 1969. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Groovy Ella from the end of the 60s – the kind of record that marked a really nice change from her staid work for Verve in years past! The setting here is bouncy and mod – a great mixture of jazz, soul, and bits of late 60s Brit Easy – no surprise, given that the sessions were recorded in London, with arrangements from maestros John Cameron and Mike Vickers! And while a few Ella purists might complain about the record, we totally dig it – and find it to be very similar to her excellent MPS album from the same stretch – a whole new sound for a singer with the range to take on anything! Titles include "Get Ready", "Yellow Man", "I Wonder Why", "Savoy Truffle", "Open Your Window", "Knock On Wood", "Got To Get You Into My Life", and "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game". ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla At Duke's Place ... LP
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful classic from mid 60s Verve – and the kind of a session that we wouldn't have expected to come off so well! In a style they were using with older artists at the time, Verve brought Ella and Duke into the studio together – with Duke's band and compositions providing the structure of the set, and Ella handling vocals. The tunes are mostly Ellington classics, but they provide a nice change of pace for the Fitzgerald of the 60s – taking Ella into more sophisticated territory on some darker themes that really surprised us. Players are all of the Ellington stalwarts of the time – and titles include "Imagine My Frustration", "Duke's Place", "What Am I Here For", "Azure", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Passion Flower", and "Something To Live For". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono MGM pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cutout hole, light wear and aging, a small stain at the bottom seam, light stain at the spine, and an X imprint in back.)

Ella FitzgeraldElla Sings Broadway ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Ella Fitzgerald sings Broadway – but in a way that makes the tunes completely her own! Marty Paich turns in some great jazzy arrangements for the set – and the tunes are far more swinging than the usual showtunes you might expect – stripped of all their stage-bound drama, and retooled by Paich as these tight little vehicles for Ella's amazing vocals! The album's arguably more expressive than even some of Fitzgerald's previous songbook sessions – even though most work comes from the same American stage mode – titles that include "Hernando's Hideaway", "I Could Have Danced All Night", "Whatever Lola Wants", "Guys and Dolls", "If I Were A Bell", "No Other Love", and "Steam Heat". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono MGM pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cutout hole.)

Ella FitzgeraldHello Dolly! ... LP
Verve, 1964. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A definite shot at the pop market by Ella Fitzgerald – quite possibly recorded as a follow-up to the 60s success of former singing partner Louis Armstrong, who's referenced nicely in Ella's rendition of the title hit! The first 4 tracks on the set were done in the UK, under the leadership of arranger Johnny Spence – and the remaining 8 were done back on Ella's home turf, with familiar backings by Frank DeVol, and an overall sound that's a bit more lush than those on the British numbers. Includes a hit reading of "Can't Buy Me Love", plus "Hello Dolly", "The Sweetest Sounds", "My Man", "Volare", "The Thrill Is Gone", "How High The Moon", and "Lullaby Of The Leaves". ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Duke EllingtonElla Fitzgerald Sings The Duke Ellington Song Book Vol 1 ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ella's performing songs written by or associated with Duke–what could be better? Here she's backed by two different Ellington groups–-one a big band, the other a small group, whose members included Stuff Smith, Barney Kessel, and Ben Webster. Titles include "Rockin' In Rhythm", "Caravan", "Take The A Train", "Clementine", and "Perdido", all performed with the with the big band, and "Satin Doll", "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)", "Cottontail", and "Do Nothing Till You Here From Me", backed by the small group. Sublime! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono Verve Records Inc pressing with deep groove. Cover has some splitting on top, and light edge wear, but is nice overall! Cool bonus – a booklet from another edition is included, but the booklet has seen better days - with heavy wear and staining.)

Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassFitzgerald & Pass – Again ... LP
Pablo, 1976. Very Good+ ... $11.99
Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass return to the studio just a few years after their initial meeting – once again to work in a stripped-down duet format that's completely sublime! The spare setting is one that Ella never got in the older days – and there's an intimacy here that almost makes it like we're hearing a new singer entirely – one who's not surging over bigger band arrangements, but laying back and singing in a mode that's almost more torchy than we could have ever expected. Pass' guitar is acoustic, and gentle – and titles include "All Too Soon", "One Note Samba", "Rain", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "That Old Feeling", "I've Got The World On A String", and "Nature Boy". ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassTake Love Easy ... LP
Pablo, 1973. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways that are completely sublime, and a very nice change from some of Ella's fuller band recordings of the few years before this album. And far from being sleepy, the intimacy of the record almost seems to set a new kind of fire – one that comes from the gentle persona of Ella, which is a far cry from the glass-breaking singer that she'd come to be known as in the mainstream! Titles include "Take Love Easy", "Once I Loved", "Lush Life", "You're Blase", "A Foggy Day", "I Want To Talk About You", and "You Go To My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongElla & Louis ... LP
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic duets between Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong – done in a sweet mode that only could have been handled by Verve in the 50s! Backings are in a nice small combo mode – with Armstrong on both trumpet and vocals – and Ella and Louis carry most of the set with their great vocal interplay – warm, personal, and pretty darn charming – in a mode that should be hokey, but comes across great, thanks to the quality of both vocalists! Titles include "April In Paris", "Can't We Be Friends", "Isn't This A Lovely Day", "Under A Blanket Of Blue", and "A Foggy Day". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent 180 gram UK pressing.)

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongPorgy & Bess (single vinyl version) ... LP
Verve, 1957. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $16.99
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 14 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

Ella Fitzgerald/Tommy Flanagan TrioMontreux 77 ... LP
Pablo, 1977. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Ella Fitzgerald swings it nicely with the Tommy Flanagan Trio – a small group on the date for backup, but one who give this Montreux performance almost as much bounce as Ella's 70s live dates with a bigger ensemble! Tommy seems to have a bit more punch in his piano than usual, and Fitzgerald really makes great use of that quality – hanging her groove on his bold lines nicely, with support from Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums. Titles include "Day By Day", "Billie's Bounce", "Too Close For Comfort", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "One Note Samba", and "Ordinary Fool". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and aging, with a small name in marker at the top right corner.)

✨✧ Ella FitzgearldSongs In A Mellow Mood ... LP
Decca, 1954. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful lost gem from Ella Fitzgerald – very much in the mellow mood hinted at in the title, with only the piano of Ellis Larkins to back her up! The sound is incredible – and even very different than any of the work she recorded at Verve – with a moody, evocative quality that seems to offer up a whole different side of Ella than we'd ever known. Larkins is always perfect in such a setting – able to be richly emotive on the keys without interfering with the singer at all – and honestly, we're stunned to hear how much Ella makes with the empty space left on the set, and wish we'd had more of a chance to hear her in this format. Titles include "Please Be Kind", "I'm Glad There Is You", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Imagination", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lurlean HunterBlue & Sentimental ... LP
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Probably the best-ever album by this obscure bluesy singer from Chicago! Jimmy Giuffre handled the arrangements, and the record has a bit more polish than some of her other albums. The tracks feature some very nice jazzy arrangements – with Jim Hall on guitar, Jimmy Jones on piano, and Harry Edison on trumpet. Lurlean's voice is deep and rich, with a sound that's a mix of Ella Fitzgerald and some of the icier singers, like Chris Connor or June Christy. Tracks include "Blue Turning Grey Over You", "Just Imagine", "My Kinda Love", "As Long As I Live", and "The Song Is You". LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah VaughanTime In My Life ... LP
Mainstream, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
Sarah Vaughn's looking pretty groovy on the cover of this album, and she's sounding pretty groovy too – thanks to some sweet 70s backings from Ernie Wilkins! The style isn't exactly funky, but it's got some fully soulful sounds, and some great electric moments too – modes that almost feel more like some of the best Kudu Records vocal sets from the time, instead of the usual Mainstream Records groove. Sarah really fits well in this sort of setting – stretching out into groovier territory than before with the same sense of change that Ella Fitzgerald or Marlena Shaw were bringing to their music at the time. Players include Jerome Richardson on saxes, Buddy Childers on trumpet, Benny Powell on trombone, Jimmy Cobb on percussion, and Earl Palmer on drums – and titles include "Inner City Blues", "Magical Connection", "Universal Prisoner", "Tomorrow City", "That's The Way I've Always Heard It", "Imagine", "On Thinking It Over", and "If Not For You". Cootie Williams & Wini BrownAround Midnight With Cootie Williams & Wini Brown ... LP
Jaro, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A cool session from Cootie Williams – working here as a vocalist as much as a trumpeter, often in the company of female singer Wini Brown! The set has both singers working together on some hip duets, then stepping apart and working on their own for some tracks too – an approach that's a bit like the Louis Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald recordings over at Verve, but handled here with a bit more swing overall! Arrangements are by Quincy Jones, who knows how to make the record move nicely – and who also keeps things away from any too-hokey territory – and titles include "Around Midnight", "Bewitched", "That Old Feeling", "Goin Around", "Lover", and "Gone Again". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono white label promo with deep groove. Cover has a partially split top seam, but is otherwise in nice shape.)
