Earth Wind & FireBest Of Earth Wind & Fire Vol 1 ... CD
Columbia, Mid 70s. Used ... $1.99
Fantastic stuff through and through – and almost a "best of" best of collection from the 70s! The album's a key illustration of the genius of Earth Wind & Fire on Columbia Records – because by the time the set was released in 1978, most of the tracks were already well-known hits – but still had a soulful power and righteous undercurrent that few other chart acts could match. Maurice White, Charles Stepney, and the others have a perfect way of holding onto their deepest inspirations while honing their skills in the studio – and the results of that commitment are heard beautifully on tracks that include "Got To Get You Into My Life", "Shining Star", "Getaway", "Can't Hide Love", "Fantasy", "Reasons", "September", and "That's The Way Of The World". ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireElectric Universe (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title's no joke, as Earth Wind & Fire are definitely part of the electric universe of early 80s Columbia Records – the galaxy that also includes Herbie Hancock during his electro years! As a result, there's a lot more keyboards and electric rhythms in the set than before – a new setting for the still-positive expressions of the group – one that works especially well on the mellower cuts! These really have the group opening up their best ballad modes – stretching out to crossover nicely, yet still with a quality level that's head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries. Of course, the sweet vocals of Philip Bailey really help put over some of the best cuts too! Titles include "Moonwalk", "Touch", "Could It Be Right", "Sweet Sassy Lady", "Spirit Of A New World", and "We're Living In Our Own Time". CD features loads of extra tracks, too – including "Magnetic (ext dance rmx)", "Magnetic (inst)", "Spirit Of A New World (demo)", "El Solitario (demo)", "Here's To Love (inst)", "Club Foot", and "Milky Way" – the last 5 of which have never been issued before! ✨✧ Earth Wind & FireGratitude (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Sony (Japan), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff! Although a live album, Gratitude is one of Earth Wind & Fire's greatest from the mid 70s – a very tight batch of grooves that proves that Maurice White & Co. could play just as well on stage as they could in the studio – and the noise of the crowd going wild is enough to confirm that! And although a live set, the record's actually a bit half and half – with a few added studio tunes to keep the hits coming. Includes their classic version of Skip Scarborough's "Can't Hide Love", plus the mellow jams "Yearnin' Learnin'" and "Reasons", the funky "Shining Star", and a great cover of "Sun Goddess", which was also done by Ramsey Lewis with the group. Features a bonus live medley too – not on the original album! CD

✨✧ Earth Wind & FireNow Then & Forever ... CD
Sony, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowingly good album from Earth Wind & Fire – one of the best we've heard from them in years, and a set that really lives up to all the faith we've had in the group over the years! The sound is right on the money – from performance to production – with a vibe that really links the record to their best work at the end of the 70s, but with a freshness that shows that the group's vision and spirit are still moving forward in the 21st Century! We honestly weren't expecting anything this great – and we're pleased as punch at the way the set sparkles wonderfully with each new track – served up with vocals mostly by Phillip Bailey, in the core trio with Ralph Johnson and Verdine White – all working here with plenty of help from a larger ensemble of players who really get the classic sound just right. The whole thing's overflowing with positive energy – and titles include "Love Is Law", "Belo Horizonte", "Splashes", "The Rush", "Night Of My Life", "My Promise", "Guiding Lights", and "Sign On". CD

✨✧ Cold FireToo Cold ... CD
Capitol/EMI (UK), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
The one and only album from Cold Fire – a Northern California funk ensemble with a really sweet feel! The group had been jamming for years in the small club and indie record scene of the late 70s, so by the time of this 1981 debut, they emerged as a fully-polished act – with a warm sound that shared some of the best later Earth Wind & Fire funk elements! There's a proud-stepping feel to most of the best tracks – tightly fused, and very much into their own bag, with a sound that must have been quite a sight to see live. Titles include "HFRS (Hustling Freaking Rocking Streaking)", "Time To Leave", "Daydreaming", "Pressure", "Ride", and "Whispering". CD

Average White BandPickin' Up The Pieces – The Best Of Average White Band ... CD
Rhino/Atlantic, 1970s. Used ... $4.99
One of the biggest crossover funk groups of all time – and when the smoke finally cleared, they were actually pretty darn good musicians! AWB's right up there with Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire for sheer pop 70s funkiness – and despite what you might think about a bunch of white guys noodling around like they're soul stars, you can't argue with classics like "Pick Up The Pieces", "Person To Person", "Cut The Cake", "Schoolboy Crush", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "A Love Of Your Own", and "Work To Do" – all of which are on this set! There's a total of 18 cuts in all, and other titles include "You Got It", "Queen Of My Soul", "Got The Love", "Soul Searching", and "Your Love Is A Miracle". CD

✨✧ Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage EnsembleArmageddon (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Katalyst, 1968. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
A rare and beautiful treasure from Chicago's Phil Cohran and his legendary Artistic Heritage Ensemble – material recorded at the end of the 60s, but only issued here for the first time ever! The sound on the record is amazing – much deeper, and more forceful than anything else we've ever heard from Cohran – almost in Sun Ra Arkestra territory at times, given the group's out-there playing, and bold collective action! The lineup is similar to other Cohran recordings from the time – Phil on cornet, Henry Gibson on congas, Pete Cosey on guitar, Louis Satterfield on bass, Charles Williams on alto, Don Myrick on tenor, Charles Handy on trumpet, Willie Woods on trombone, and Aaron Dodd on tuba – a group that's a wonderful bridge between the two important Chicago generations headed by Sun Ra and Earth Wind & Fire. Armageddon is an extended piece, divided up into five different musical acts – conceived by Cohran in the late 50s, and recorded here in 1968 – with some great help from The Spencer Jackson Family on the leadoff track "Motherless Child". Other titles include "Creation Of The Beast", "The Warning", "The Window", and "Armageddon" – a clear reference to the power of the atom bomb! CD

✨✧ EmotionsBest Of My Love – Best Of The Emotions ... CD
Legacy, Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
From a hard soul trio to one of the biggest soul chart acts of the mid 70s, The Emotions had an amazing ride to the top. Although the sisters started out in the field of gospel, then moved through indie labels to cut a few nice raw soul albums for Stax, it was the Chicago soul genius of Maurice White and the growing Earth Wind & Fire empire that pushed the girls over the top. This set features 16 tracks from those big hit years – when the girls were blaring out of radios everywhere, on stations black and white, with groovers like "Best Of My Love", "Don't Ask My Neighbors", and "Boogie Wonderland" – and it also features plenty of album numbers like "Yes I Am", "Key To My Heart", "Rejoice", "Flowers", "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", and "Love Is Right On". EmotionsCome Into Our World (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Big Break (UK), 1979. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The sweet Emotions at the top of their game – one of the brilliant albums that has the soulful trio working hand in hand with Earth Wind & Fire! The girls were plenty great in their early years, but working with Maurice White and company, they really took off – hitting a whole new level that really unlocked some deeply spiritual power in their vocals! And sure, the approach also yielded the group plenty of hits – but for good reason, too – given the classic quality and all-great nature of a set like this. Maurice White produced, and the lineup is filled with plenty of Earth Wind & Fire players too – working with some great arrangements from Tom Tom 84, Wade Marcus, and others. Tunes are balanced between clubby numbers and some nice midtempo moments – and titles include "Where Is Your Love", "Cause I Love You", "Come Into My World", "On & On", "I Should Be Dancing", "Layed Back", and "Yes I Am". CD features bonus tracks – "My Baby Dance", "I Should Be Dancing (single)", and "Where Is Your Love (single)". CD

Post-disco work from The Emotions – breaking free a bit here from the Earth Wind & Fire influence, and grooving nicely with a sweet 80s feel! The girls' voices are still quite wonderful – some of the deepest harmonies in the female soul world at the time – and the tunes kick it up nicely in a blend of snapping bassy club tracks and mellower cuts that sweetly sway with their great vocals! Loads of wonderful tracks – and an album not to miss! Titles include the wicked funky "Love Lies" - plus "Turn It Out", "There'll Never Be Another Moment", "Now That I Know", "When You Gonna Wake Up", and "Here You Come Again". CD

Ramsey LewisLive At The Savoy ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1982. Used ... $4.99
A live set, but one that's got some wonderfully rich grooves – almost one of the first times that Ramsey's excellent studio approach was attempted on record in a concert setting! The backings are quite full, and produced beautifully here by Tom Tom 84 – who really keeps a classy Chicago vibe in place throughout most of the set – one that stretches from Ramsey's late years at Cadet Records, through all the growth and maturation at Columbia during the 70s. The core trio's augmented by fuller horns on most numbers, given a bit of an Earth Wind & Fire/Kalimba Productions groove – and there's a vocal chorus at a few points too. Includes a great version of "Close Your Eyes & Remember" – plus "Sassy Stew", "Callin Fallin", "Baby What You Want Me To Do", "You Never Know", "Lynn", and a "Hits Medley" of Lewis grooves from the 60s. Ramsey LewisLove Notes ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used ... $11.99
A great little album of mid 70s funk from Ramsey Lewis – very much in the mode of his Earth, Wind, & Fire related work – no surprise, since the album's dedicated to Charles Stepney, whose influence was such a key part of the sound of the group, and of some of Ramsey's other Kalimba-produced albums from a few years before! Ramsey plays Fender Rhodes, mini moog, and Arp – and he gets help on keyboards from Stevie Wonder and Derf Reklaw, who also plays saxes and percussion on the set. Features versions of Wonder's "Love Notes" and "Spring High", plus Reklaw's "Chili Today Hot Tamale", "Shining", and "Stash Dash". CD

Ramsey takes a new look at one his bona fide classics – the Sun Goddess album, and more for Taking Another Look! His new electric group features Mike Logan on keys, Charles Heath on drums, Henry Johnson on guitar and Joshua Ramos on bass. Includes new versions of "Living For The City", "Love Song", "Jungle Strut" and "Tambura" from Sun Goddess, plus "Sharing Her Journey", "Betcha By Golly, Wow!", plus the 1974 recording of "Sun Goddess" featuring Earth, Wind & Fire. Ascendant, 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Spiritual grooves from Chicago's Ascendant – an up-and-coming trio with a really warm and soulful feel! The group are steeped in traditions that stretch back to Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire – blending the spiritual and soulful with tight rhythms, jazzy keys, and some deep vocals that shift between male and female leads, always with some nice harmonies in the background. Tunes are all originals, with a very positive and progressive feel – kind of a straighter soul album that's still in the territory of Fertile Ground – and titles include "Power", "Give It Up", "Hard Times", "10 D", "We Are", "Make It So (parts 1 & 2)", and "Illusions". ✨✧ Light Of The WorldAddicted To Funk – The Anthology ... CD
EMI (UK), Early 80s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A long-overdue tribute to one of the funkiest British groups at the end of the 70s – the massive Light Of The World, a combo who could easily take on Earth Wind & Fire at their best! Like EWF, Light Of The World worked in a great space that was equally located between jazz, funk, and soul – often served up with the warmly mellow grooves of American combos like The Blackbyrds, Pleasure, or some of the Wayne Henderson-produced groups on Fantasy Records – no surprise really, given that some of the cuts here were handled by Henderson associate Augie Johnson! The quality of the work here is top shelf all the way through – and honestly, the main reason the group didn't go further at the time is because they split up early in their career – leaving members to go onto form other groups like Incognito, Beggar & Co, and The Team. 2CD set features a full disc of 16 Light Of The World Tracks – including "Swingin", "London Town", "I'm So Happy", "Pete's Crusade", "Time", "The Boys In Blue", "Midnight Groovin", "I Shot The Sheriff", "Everybody Move", and "No 1 Girl" – plus a bonus disc with 13 more later efforts by group members – including "Chant No 1" by Spandau Ballet, "Parisienne Girl" and "Shine On" by Incognito, "Somebody Help Me Girl" by Beggar & Co, "We Are The Team" and "Wicki Wacky House Party" by The Team, "Save Your Love" by Gee Bello, and "Twilight Zone" by Mighty Seven. Sweeeeeet work from the wonderful Maysa Leak – quite possibly her best album so far! The record has a really warm original feel – far steps from the earlier Incognito-influences sound of past records (not that that was a bad thing, mind you – but it's even better to hear Maysa stepping out on her own!) The songs are incredibly seductive – a good blend of original tunes, and covers of work by Jhelisa, Earth Wind & Fire, Sly Stone, and other influential artists. ✨✧ MtumePrime Time – The Epic Anthology ... CD
Epic/ (UK), Late 70s/1980s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
James Mtume is an artist with deep roots in jazz – including some excellent spiritual jazz material in the early 70s – but here, he's hitting superstardom in the soul music world – by pairing up with Reggie Lucas for a great run of music from the Mtume group! Lucas also hails from jazz – Mtume met him when they were both working with Miles Davis – and both artists bring something really special to their sound that moves it away from simple commercial soul – a bit like the depth that lays behind Earth Wind & Fire, who have similar righteous roots, but are able to fuse a wonderfully smooth, groovy sound – and there's also a similarity to the late 70s material of Norman Connors, another artist who followed a similar path. This set spans the full run of excellent recordings Mtume did for the Epic label – almost a decade's worth of music, including some other mixes, and a few side projects with singer Tawatha. Titles include "Just Funnin", "Anticipatin", "Mrs Sippi", "Love Lock", "Closer To The End", "Funky Constellation", "The After 6 Mix (Juicy Fruit part 2)", "You Me & He (polygamy mix)", "COD", "Prime Time", "We're Gonna Make It This Time", "The Closer I Get To You", "Kiss This World Goodbye", "It's Non-Functional", "Body & Soul", "Breathless (A&G mix)", "Did I Dream You", and "Would You Like To Fool Around". ✨✧ Pieces Of PeacePieces Of Peace ... CD
Scarab/Cali Tex, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost treasure of rare soul from the Chicago scene – the unreleased album by Pieces Of Peace – a combo with ties both to the late 60s soul of Twinight Records and the early 70s grooves of The Pharoahs! This set was initially recorded by The Pharoahs' Scarab label, but never issued at the time – and it shows a tremendous growth from the earlier hard funk styles of the Pieces – a move into fuller, more complicated modes that often had the same righteous blend of jazz, soul, and spirituality as Earth Wind & Fire! The production here is great, and the tapes haven't suffered at all for all their years on the shelf – and if anything, the album's even more explosive now than if it was issued at the time – given how long we've had to wait. The reissue is beautiful too – probably better done than any original wax might have been – thanks to careful curation from Josh (DJ Shadow) Davis, Dante Carfagna, and Rob Sevier – the latter of whom turns in some Numero-styled notes that really tell the full story of the group. Titles include "Cease Fire", "Pollution", "Flunky For Your Love", "I Still Care", "Peace & Blessings", and "Yesterday's Visions". CD

An oh so tasty batch of jazzy modern soul from the Baltimore combo Pockets – one of the loose assemblage of groups to be directed at the time by Verdine White's Kalimba Productions – and with all the joyful vibes that association implies! There's some nice touches of Earth Wind & Fire on the record – but the group also has a lot of similarity to other jazzy harmony groups at the time, like Side Effect or Creative Source – with super memorable tunes with catchy hooks without ever compromising the deeper soul touches. Wonderful stuff! Tracks include "Catch Me", "So Delicious", "How Do You Think It Feels?", "Charisma", and "Baby, Are You Coming Home With Me?". CD

✨✧ Maurice WhiteMaurice White ... CD
Sony (Japan), 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
The only solo album ever recorded by Maurice White – an upbeat and soulful set that's right up there with his best 80s work in Earth Wind & Fire! Like that group at the time, White's hitting a rhythmic side that's more electronic at points – letting beats and keyboard bits stand in for the previously-acoustic drums and percussion – yet all in a way that still retains that great EWF style of soul! Things are tight, but never too slick or commercial – and although the songs are catchy, they're never nearly as cloying as some of the other mainstream soul from the time. There's some surprisingly sweet moments that really show a new side of Maurice's talents, and titles include "Switch On Your Radio", "Stand By Me", "Sea Of Glass", "I Need You", "Invitation", "Lady Is Love", "The Sleeping Flame", and "Children Of Afrika".
