Charles BradleyChanges ... CD
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". CD

Charles BradleyStrictly Reserved For You/Let Love Stand A Chance ... 7-inch
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy ... $5.99
Pure wonderfulness from Charles Bradley – two killer cuts that really sum up his contemporary genius! "Strictly Reserved" has this slow funk groove that's nice and sinister – a stepping guitar riff that really sets up the groove right from the start – topped with these incredibly soulful vocals from Charles, and peppered with just the right dose of horns! "Let Love Stand A Chance" is a killer too – mellower, and a bit more deep soul – with a burning feel that almost blows away the best James Brown ballads of the King Records years! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Charles Bradley & Menahan Street BandStay Away/Run It Back ... 7-inch
Dunham/Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $4.99
One of the funkiest tunes we've ever heard from Charles Bradley – thanks to some killer drums on the intro, and this wild psychedelic guitar as well! These instruments set a perfect scene for Bradley to really let loose on "Stay Away" – with these blistering vocals that have a late 60s sort of deep soul energy – totally amazing, and pushing our respect for Bradley even further! The tune's a cover of a Nirvana tune – in case you didn't know it – and the flipside features a continued instrumental take on the groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Charles BradleyChange For The World/Revelation ... 7-inch
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mighty righteous sounds from Charles Bradley – a strong message-oriented cut that's set to a slow funk groove – one that steps boldly and proudly, but never too fast – which lets Bradley really take off on his vocal lead, and build things up wonderfully towards the end! "Revelations" follows suit – but offers up an all-instrumental reading of the main track – no solos at all, but just a slow funk mode that's totally outta sight! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Charles BradleyNo Time For Dreaming (plus download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Gritty, powerful raw soul from Charles Bradley – the full length debut from the 62-year-old Brooklyn singer – backed perfectly by The Menahan Street Band! It's incredible, a record that sounds just as rawly emotional and impeccably soulful in 2011 as it would have in 1971 – much like the work Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, there's no mistaking this for anything but the real deal. Rough hewn in beautifully so – with perfect, funky backing by team Menahan. A timeless treasure! Titles include "In You (I Found A Love)", "I Believe In Your Love", "The Telephone Song", "Golden Rule", "How Long", "Trouble In The Land", "Since Our Last Goodbye", "Heartaches And Pain", "The World" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles BradleyVictim Of Love (with bonus download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". ✨✧ Charles Bradley & LaRose JacksonLuv Jones/Change Change Change ... 7-inch
Dunham, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet funky number from Charles Bradley – done in duet with Larose Jackson, and with almost a deeper feel than some of Bradley's other work! The vocals move with the rhythms in this great way – less harmonies than each singer at the same time, then breaking out into their own verses while the band keeps up the groove! "Change Change Change" is another duet, and equally funky – with some great vocal back/forth action that really mirrors the instrumental grooves! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Sylvester Cotton/Andrew DurhamBlues Sensation – Detroit Downhome Recordings 1948/1949 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1948/1949. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Raw sounds you'd never expect from Detroit – postwar blues by two overlooked artists, presented here with a fair bit of unissued tracks as well! Sylvester Cotton's got a sound that's much more southern than you'd guess – raw, stripped down performances that bring together hard-ringing lines on acoustic guitar with very plaintive vocals – much more a Texas style than a midwestern one, and a good indication of all the southern influences that were hitting the motor city in the years after the war. Cotton's music takes up 19 of the 25 tracks on the set – and titles include "Single Man's Blues", "Brown Skin Woman", "Three Cent Stamp Blues", "When I'm Gone", "Ugly Woman Blues", "I Tried", and "Stranger In Your Own Town Blues". Andrew Dunham follows with six more tracks – really mindblowing in the way he uses spare electric lines with the kind of formation you'd expect to here more from a country blues acoustic guitar – sometimes with such force it feels like the strings are going to rasp right off the frets, while his own vocals seem to work equally hard to blow out the microphone. Titles include "She Don't Walk", "Rocky Mountain", "Corinne", "I Found Out", and two takes of "Little Bitty Woman". CD

✨✧ Various90 Degrees Of Shade – Hot Jump-Up Island Sounds From The Caribbean Vol 1 – Mambo, Calypso, Goombay, Mento, Merengue, Cult & Compas Music ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A way cooler set of music than you might expect – not the kind of overdone Caribbean cliches of the mainstream, but some really great lesser-known gems that mix together sounds and styles from Cuba to Haiti, to Jamaica, and beyond – served up here in a host of gems all hand-picked by the Soul Jazz Records crew! The music here is tighter and better produced than some of the earlier calypso featured on compilations on Honest Jons – but the sounds are still quite striking, and the music goes way beyond familiar modes from Harry Belafonte – to mix of jazzy elements, Latin rhythms, local styles, and lots more – with wonderful notes that really get at the music as well. A real surprise – one we love a lot more than we expected – with titles that include "Come To The Caribbean" by The Eloise Trio, "Timbales" by Alfredito, "Mississippi Mambo" by Noro Morales, "Donkey Wants Water" by Bay Street Boys, "Nago" by Katherine Dunham Ensemble, "Nassau Blues" by Peanuts Taylor, "West Indies" by Sonny Burke, "Mary's Lamb" by Hubert Porter & The Jamaica Calypso Funmakers, and "Theme For Conga" by Julio Gutierrez, LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes bonus download too!)
