Duke EllingtonEllington Indigos ... LP
Columbia, 1957. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of Duke Ellington's best albums of the 50s – a well-conceived session of dark moody tracks that revisits a few old favorites, hits a few standards, and offers a new gem that's right up there with the classics! The "indigos" title is taken very seriously here – as the album's awash in blue tones and darker hues – a bit Kenton in inspiration, but carried off with a lot more intimacy and sense of soul throughout. The group by this point is completely mature – and old bandmates like Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet, Cat Anderson and Ray Nance on trumpets, and Jimmy Woode on bass all fit together perfectly under Ellington's direction. Titles include Duke's great "The Sky Fell Down", plus "Mood Indigo", "Autumn Leaves", "Tenderly", "Dancing In The Dark", "Where Or When", and "Solitude". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has surface wear, clear tape on seams, spot of pen on the back.)

Cast Of ZoomCome On & Zoom! ... LP
A&M, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Ok, ok, we'll admit it! When we were kids, we totally dug this hippy-dippy show and all of its insider jokes, games, and languages. Listening to this old soundtrack, though, we kind of wince to think how this drivel might have affected us if punk hadn't come along to make us totally boring and cynical for the better part of the 80s! With such favorites as "Zoom Theme", "Fannee Doodle", "Ballin The Jack", "I Believe In Music", and the legendary "Address Song"! LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has a promo sticker, light aging, and small blemishes.)

Jackie & RoySing Baby Sing ... LP
Storyville, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Japanese Trio pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)

Jr Walker & The All StarsHome Cookin' ... LP
SOUL, 1968. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Heavy duty instrumentals from this legendary Detroit tenor giant! This album's one of Jr's best – recorded with a rawer tone than later work, almost a mixture of funky 45 and R&B grooving. Motown favorites like "Come See About Me" and "What Does It Take To Win Your Love" are served up alongside motor city bumpers like "Sweet Daddy Deacon" and "Hip City" with the 45 pts. 1 & 2 edits preserved on the LP. LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Includes Motown inner sleeve. Cover has light ring and edge wear.)

✨✧ Hot ButterHot Butter Popcorn ... LP
Musicor/Hallmark (UK), 1973. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A groovy moogy pop classic! Hot Butter weren't the most groundbreaking moog combo, but they certainly were the most successful. The title cut of this one, their version of Gershon Kingsley's "Popcorn", was used in a gazillion commercials and TV shows during the 70s – and was certainly the biggest moog-oriented single of the early years. The whole record's pretty good, too – even if it has them mostly copping songs from other artists, like "Song of the Nairobi Trio", and guitar instrumental favorites "Apache", "Telstar", and "Pipeline". And in fact, those tracks sum up the group best – as they were to the moog what the Ventures were to the electric guitar: they popularized the instrument tremendously through instrumental versions of hits from other folks. LP, Vinyl record album
(A great copy.)

✨✧ Julius Hemphill (Mbari)Dogon AD (2LP 200 gram pressing – with bonus track) ... LP
International Phonograph, 1972/1977. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A seminal session from the St Louis scene of the early 70s – one that was humming nearly as much as Chicago was with the AACM at the time! As with the larger organization in the Windy City, St Louis had the Black Artists Group – of which Julius Hemphill was a key member, forming fresh new ideas in improvisatory jazz with players who went onto have an undeniable impact on the global scene as well. This album's one of the standout recordings of the Black Artists era at its best – a record produced by Hemphill, but equally balanced between his own alto and flute, the trumpet of Baikida Carroll, cello of Abdul Wadud, and drums of Phillip Wilson – plus a bit of added baritone from Haimet Bluiett. The rhythms are quite open, but there's also a nice sense of structure to the record too – a bridge between spiritual and free jazz that prefaces the impact that both Hemphill and Bluiett would have on the New York loft jazz generation. Titles include "Dogon AD", "Rites", and "The Painter". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KalapanaKalapana III ... LP
Abattoir, 1977. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Another extremely strong batch of 70s AOR grooving from Kalapana – a tight ensemble who were kind of Hawaii's answer to the slicker sounds of the LA scene during the mid 70s. Kalapana appeal to our ears in the same way as America, later Doobie Brothers, and other smooth and mellow mainstream favorites – and this third album's as great a representation of their work as you'll ever hear. Lots of tight jazzy jamming, plus well-produced vocals with a nice flanged-out quality. Titles include "Songbird", "Seasons", "Alisa Lovely", "Girl", "Inarajan", "Dilemma", "Another Time", and "Up To You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Webster LewisOn The Town ... LP
Epic, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Classic club from Webster Lewis – and much more of an all-out disco affair than some of his later work! The record introduces Lewis' all-encompassing style – as he writes, arranges, and produces the album at a level that easily matches that of Barry White – who would later emerge as a mentor for Lewis, introducing him as part of the later Love Unlimited Orchestra records. The group here is billed as "Webster Lewis & The Post-Pop Space-Rock Be-Bop Gospel Tabernacle Orchestra & Chorus" – a pretty good way to describe the soaringly full sound of the album – one that's built up from Webster's keyboards with lots of added strings and rhythms, plus occasional backing vocals from a female chorus. Most of the focus here is instrumental, though – filled with great tunes that include "On The Town", "Love Is The Way", "Do It With Style", "Song Of Joy", "Goodnight Baby Girl", "Since I've Been Gone", and "Saturday Night Steppin Out". ✨✧ ManhattansMillion To One ... LP
DeLuxe, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Manhattans really hit a deep new level of sound on this early 70s set – a record that takes off strongly from their early singles, and really paves the way for their more sophisticated sounds to come during the Columbia Records hit years! The quintet are completely sublime here – fused wonderfully together on the harmonies, at a level that beats most of their east coast contemporaries – yet still getting a nice sort of indie approach in the production, which means that things are never too commercial – and the group can really open up and do their thing! There's a few badass tracks that fit with the group's Superfly look on the cover – but as always, some of our favorites are the mellow cuts – which these guys can almost do better than anyone else. Titles include "I Can't Stand for You To Leave Me", "Do You Ever", "Back Up", "Million to One", and "Cry If You Wanna Cry". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oscar PetersonWith Respect To Nat ... LP
Limelight, 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Oscar Peterson pays tribute to the late Nat King Cole – not only on piano, but also with a bit of vocals as well! Given how rarely Oscar sings on record, the album's a real treat – especially as his vocals capture the spirit of Cole surprisingly well – not exactly like Nat, but with the same mix of soul, swing, and class! Half the album features Peterson in trio formation – with Herb Ellis on guitar and Ray Brown on bass – in a way that recreates the King Cole Trio sound. Other tracks feature fuller backings from Manny Albam – nice and jazzy, in the style that Nat used during the 50s at Capitol! Titles are all Cole favorites – and include "Little Girl", "Unforgettable", "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry", "Easy Listening Blues", "Walkin My Baby Back Home", and "It's Only A Paper Moon". ✨✧ McCoy TynerReevaluation: The Impulse Years ... LP
Impulse, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An excellent 2LP set that collects together some of McCoy Tyner's finest moments recording for Impulse during the 60s – including a few tracks from Coltrane sessions, plus others from Tyner's own great albums for the label. Coltrane tracks include "Welcome", "Serenity", "Sun Ship", and "One Down One Up" – but our favorites are Tyner-led tracks, like "Inception", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Contemporary Focus", and "Effendi". ✨✧ Four TopsFour Tops Second Album ... LP
Motown, 1965. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Four Tops' second album – and quite possibly the most hitbound of all their early Motown work! The album's overflowing with classic numbers – and features the perennial favorites "I Can't Help Myself" and "It's The Same Old Song" – as well as a totally winning batch of other tunes, all produced to perfection by the Holland/Dozier team! The sound is classic Motown all the way through – still some nice rough edges on the group's vocals – and killer lead work from Levi Stubbs. Other tracks include "Helpless", "Love Feels Like Fire", "Something About You", "I'm Grateful", and "Stay In My Lonely Arms". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Irene KralKral Space ... LP
Catalyst, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hip, breezy, and wonderful! Irene Kral's a good vocalist, but she's never been one of our favorites – until we heard this album! The record's a totally hip batch of jazzy tracks with a 70s approach to the kind of underground songwriter styles used in the 60s by artists like Jackie & Roy or Bob Dorough. No surprise that Kral sings some tracks by cronies of those singers – like Tommy Wolf, Fran Landesman, and Dave Frishberg. Backing's by an acoustic quartet that features Alan Broadbent on piano and Emil Richards on vibes and percussion – and tracks include "Small Day Tomorrow", "Some Time Ago", "It's Nice Weather For Ducks", "Experiment", and "Wheelers & Dealers". ✨✧ Jive FiveI'm A Happy Man ... LP
United Artists, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great little album of group soul – recorded by indie label favorites The Jive Five, and just about their only album for a big label. Horace Ott produced and arranged, and he nicely takes the group's earlier doo wop style into a 60s harmony groove – adding in some arrangements that have a bit more of a kick and a northern groove, and helping the group come up with some tasty little numbers filled with hooks and riffs that let them still show off their vocal skills. Titles include "I'm A Happy Man", "Prove Every Word You Say", "I Remember When", "Hang On The Corner", "A Bench In The Park", "Falling Tears", and "Ha Ha". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michel PetruccianiPianism ... LP
Blue Note, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Pure beauty and joy from Michel Petrucciani – a record that captures the pianist in all his 80s genius – working in a trio with Palle Danielsson on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums, but clearly driving the whole engine with his boundless energy on the keys! The tracks are all quite long, and even familiar themes are nicely transformed – although our favorites are the original numbers by Michel, which dominate the record and really seem like the best sort of showcase for that special spirit that made him such a standout during his too-short recorded career. Titles include "The Prayer", "Our Tune", "Face's Face", "Regina", and "Night & Day". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chris ConnorChris Craft ... LP
Atlantic, 1958. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Chris' Craft is a great one here – beautifully simple and straightforward jazz vocals, served up at a level that few other singers can match! The album's one of our favorites from Connor's classic years with Atlantic – as it's got a mellow, moody approach that's filled with the darker tones that first caught our ears on Chris' earliest recordings for Bethlehem. Instrumentation here is mostly small combo – arranged by Stan Free, and featuring Free on piano, Bobby Jaspar on flute, Mundell Lowe on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Ed Shaughnessy on drums. Titles include "Be A Clown", "Be My All", "Good For Nothin", "Moonlight In Vermont", "The Night We Called It A Day", "Lover Man", and "On The First Warm Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Titles include "Blow The Man Down", "Harlot Of Jerusalem", "The Young Sailor", "Passengers Will Please Refrain", "Roll Your Leg Over", and "Blinded By Turds". LP, Vinyl record album
