Wonderful wonderful soul from Brenton Wood – one of the most unique singers of his day, and a talent whose voice worked well on so many types of numbers! This album's Brenton's second – a great follow-up to the first, and one that shows him pushing the envelope a lot in terms of the music he's working with. The title track – "Baby You Got It" – is a great groover with a catchy edge – one of a handful of tunes with really a charming, catchy chorus that he brings some emotional depth to. Another gem is "Gimme Little Sign" – a tune that's very much in the spirit of his earlier hit "Oogum Boogum Song", a great thing for us – but the whole thing is a gem! The fantastic lost legacy of The Harlots Of 42nd Street – a cross-dressing group who were Manhattan contemporaries of the New York Dolls, but who never got their best shot at fame! If anything, the group's lyrics are grittier than the Dolls – more in the streetwise/street scene mode of early solo Lou Reed, with plenty of tales from the gutter on up – and although their sound may be a little less punkish, their overall approach is still nice and raw, and completely unique! Wonderfully weird work from the New York scene of the late 70s and early 80s – recordings that bristle with some of the best post-punk and new wave energy of the time, but which are much more obscure than most work you might know from other records!
