One of the benchmark albums in the leftfield underground hip hop canon – and a hugely influential set that burst the doors wide open for the more creative spirits in the hip hop and even experimental pop. ✨✧ Cornell DupreeShadow Dancing ... CD
Versatile/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Smooth and soulful guitar work from Cornell Dupree – a player who recorded on countless sessions as a studio sideman, but hardly ever got to work as a leader on his own! The album's got a full sound that's kind of a step beyond the Kudu/CTI sound of the time – an approach that takes larger orchestrations and uses them as the backdrop for Dupree's work on guitar, often with a fair bit of keyboard support from Mario Sprouse who arranged both albums on the set. The fullness resonates with the funky dancefloor style of David Matthews during the same stretch – a bit commercial at times, but still with plenty of nice instrumental touches. Includes "The Creeper", "Two Doors Down", "Peg", "On & On", "The Closer I Get To You" and "Hey Girl". CD

VariousHolding Things Together – The Merle Haggard Songbook ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Merle Haggard isn't just one of the greatest country singers of all time – he's also a hell of a songwriter, too – one who emerged fully-formed into the glory of his Capitol Records years – releasing album after album that were full of amazing original compositions! Merle's own recordings of his songs have gone on to shape the sound of country music for decades – but right from the start, his music was grabbed up and interpreted by singers in a variety of different modes – sometimes as a way to make older artists sound hip, and more importantly as a way for younger acts to give ol' Hag the nod, and fortify their rootsy inclinations with a strong dose of straight country! This set does a great job of mixing up both sides of that coin, and throws in a few surprises along the way – finally giving Merle his due when it comes to the pen, on tracks that include "The Bottle Let Me Down" by Emmylou Harris, "I Must Be Somebody Else You've Known" by International Submarine Band, "Sing Me Back Home" by The Every Brothers, "Life In Prison" by The Byrds, "Kern River" by Dave Alvin, "Legend Of Bonnie & Clyde" by Tammy Wynette, "White Line Fever" by Flying Burrito Brothers, "Okie From Muskogee" by Roy Rogers, "Swinging Doors" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Today I Started Loving You Again" by Wynn Stewart, "Rainbow Stew" by Country Joe McDonald, "Honky Tonk Night Time Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Just Because You Can't Be Mine" by Bettye Swann, and "Silver Wings" by The Knitters. ✨✧ Ken FowserRight On Time ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This might be the first time we've ever heard tenorist Ken Fower with a Hammond organ in the mix – and it makes for a great change that really opens up the colors in his horn! Ken's always had a strong sense of tone, and we love his acoustic records – but this time around, Brian Charette handles the Hammond with a very groovy vibe – one that takes Ken back into 60s soul jazz territory, yet without any copycat cliche modes at all – kind of a sweet blend of Fowser's strong sense of writing and rhythm, just given a nice kick by the organ, which also handles the basslines too. The rest of the group is great as well – with Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Steve Davis on trombone, Ed Cherry on guitar, and Willie Jones III on some nicely snapping drums. Titles include "No Filter", "On My Way", "Stand Clear Of The Closing Doors", "Samba For Joe Bim", "Knights Of The Round", "Fowser Time", and "Don't Let Life Pass You By". CD

✨✧ Alex PudduGolden Age Of Danish Pornography Vol 3 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great third chapter in the Danish Pornography series by Alex Puddu – and, like the others, music that was recorded to accompany the re-release of some classic adult films from the 70s! As you'd guess from the title and project, the sound here is very retro overall – wicked funk that works very hard to hit all the right slinky and sleazy notes needed to accompany the images of grown-up fun on the screen – with plenty of electric touches on a range of different keyboards and guitar (and even a bit of electric sitar, too) – in grooves that have a nicely building vibe, but which never try too hard to overtake the visual energy of the moment. In other words (if we can extend this metaphor even further), Alex is great at the foreplay, keeps things going a long time, and really knows how to build to a musical climax – on titles that include "Lesbian Lovers", "The Swinger Generation", "Cowboys Do It Better", "Black Orgasm", "Seductive Star", "Africa Scream", "Exotic Love", "Behind Closed Doors", and "Sex Bar". ✨✧ Tangerine DreamVirgin Years 1977 to 1983 (Encore/Force Majeure/Tangram/Exit/White Eagle/Logos/Hyperborea – with bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
Virgin/EMI (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
Seven full albums from Tangerine Dream, all served up in a single set, with bonus tracks too – all as a wonderful document of this second chapter of their career! During these years, Tangerine Dream had moved from the Krautrock underground to the spotlight of a new electronic music generation – as pioneers who opened the doors for many, and were still able to stay ahead of the game – thanks in part to growing exposure on the soundtrack scene! Most of these records still have the group working in their strong longform mode – with very extended tracks – and two albums, Logos and Encore, are both live albums that show that the group were every bit as compelling on stage as they were in the studio. ✨✧ Marvin Gaye & Tammi TerrellUnited ... CD
Tamla/Universal (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic soul duets between Marvin & Tammi Terrell – a landmark pair in 60s soul music, and easily one of the best male/female duos in pop music ever! Marvin and Tammi have a way of singing together that makes you feel like they're speaking the tunes, not singing them – a personal, intimate quality that's almost as if we're sneaking in on them behind closed doors – and not hearing their voices cast out in front of full backing in the Motown studios. Even when the tunes are familiar, they're still bracingly emotive – Includes stone classics like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "If I Could Build My World Around You", plus "Hold Me Oh My Darling", "Somethin Stupid", "You Got What It Takes", and "If This World Were Mine". ✨✧ Harlem Gospel TravelersHe's On Time ... CD
Colemine, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The fantastic full-length group of The Harlem Gospel Travelers – a quartet trained on the male group gospel modes of older acts like the Soul Stirrers or Violinaires – but one who really shine strongly with a voice of their own, thanks to a set of all original material, and some nice funk-based currents in the instrumentation! The album's definitely a gospel record, but it resonates with those rare efforts on labels like Stax or Jewel, which could bring in musical currents from the secular world, to really help shape the spiritual message – opening things up way past the doors of the church, so that the positive spirit and sense of rebirth can spread out and touch the rest of the world. These guys are still very young, and we expect that we'll be hearing great things from them in years to come – but we're already plenty pleased with the results here, on tunes that include "Am I Doing Enough", "Oh Yes He Will", "Motherless Child", "Shine On Me", "Brighter Day", "Wash Me Lord", "On The Right Road", and "If You Can't Make It Through A Storm". ✨✧ Billy Paul360 Degrees Of Billy Paul/War Of The Gods ... CD
Philadelphia International/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two ultra-hip albums from Billy Paul – back to back in a single set! First up is 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul – a record that features Billy Paul at the height of his powers – able to capture the ears of the crossover audience, yet still stay very strongly on message – all with this righteous power that maybe makes Billy one of the hippest mainstream soul stars of the 70s! Gamble & Huff are at the helm, and arrangements at Sigma Sound are by Lenny Pakula, Norman Harris, and Bobby Martin – but throughout the whole thing, it's Billy's delivery that really sends the record over the top – the new sense of maturity he brings to the huge hit "Me & Mrs Jones", the funky vibe of "Am I Black Enough For You", and the wealth of great work on tracks that include "I'm Gonna Make It This Time", "I'm Just A Prisoner", "Brown Baby", and "Let's Stay Together". A masterpiece of sophisticated soul that not only had Billy crossing over big, but which opened whole new doors in the market for black male singers! War Of The Gods is a stone treasure from one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s – and a set you'll regularly find in the coolest of record collections from back in the day! Billy Paul was always one of the hippest talents on Philly International – mixing together soul and jazz influences with a deeper sense of spirituality, and long experience as a sophisticated vocalist. This album's one of his most sublime efforts – kind of a quasi-spiritual record with a similar high-concept approach to some of Marvin Gaye's work from the same time – really righteous, in ways that the Philly label didn't always hit – and which really goes past even most of Billy's already hip previous efforts. Gamble and Huff produced and wrote most of the record – including the two long tracks that make up side one, "I See The Light" and "War Of The Gods", the latter of which starts out slow and moody, then breaks out into a club groove. Other titles include the more standard soul tune "The Whole Town's Talking", plus "Thanks For Saving My Life" and "Peace Holy Peace". CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

✨✧ Patrick Shiroishi/Rob MagillEyes In The Dirt ... CD
Weird Cry, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really haunting duets from these two California reedman – both playing woodwinds in a variety of formats, but with an especially strong emphasis on saxophones! The tunes have this open, airy quality that's different than most free improvisations – more meditative and spiritual, with an inherent sense of structure – and often these flowing waves of energy that emanate nicely between both musicians. There's a vibe that's almost a bit like some of the more introspective music of the great Bob Downes – but with more of an American sense of soul, as well – and titles include "Wind In The Trees", "Nail In The Wall", "Picture Paintings", "Begin To Look Around", and "Long & Wide Doors".
