✨✧ VariousSmooth Jazz Journey – Great Ocean Road ... CD
Dome (UK), 2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Don't think "smooth jazz", think more "Neo Soul" – as the set's put together by Neo Soul powerhouse Dome Records – and features some of their own great recordings mixed with hipper electric jazz tracks from some of the more soulful talents of the past decade or so! There's definitely an instrumental focus here – although some cuts have vocals too – and the jazz component is much more skewed towards an older sort of soulful fusion from the 70s, than some of the weaker or clunkier smooth jazz styles from the contemporary charts – a classic vibe that really makes the collection strong. Titles include "A Universal Vibe" by Down To The Bone, "Tonight We Dance" by Citrus Sun, "The Girl From Ipanema" by Brian Bromberg, "Never In Your Sun" by Khari Cabral Simmons with India Arie, "Winelight" by Jason Miles with Gerald Albright, "10 Degrees South" by Jonathan Butler, "The Message" by Brenda Russell, "Full Circle" by Jazz Steppers, "The Stars From Here" by Incognito with Natalie Williams, "Lullabye" by Ray Gaskins with Roy Ayers, "Biyah" by Pat Leacock, "Round The World" by Jackiem Joyner, "The Look Of Love" by Steve Cole, and "If You Really Wanna" by Bluey. IncognitoClassic Album Series (Who Needs Love/Adventures In Black Sunshine/Eleven/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2002/2004/2005. New Copy 3 CDs ... $19.99
Three great albums from Incognito – served up at a mighty nice price, and with bonus tracks too! Who Needs Love is a gem from over a decade ago – and Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick pulled out all the stops on this set – working with a range of vocalists that includes Joy Rose, Kelli Sae, Tony Momrelle, Joy Malcolm, and Brazilian soul legend Ed Motta! The range of voices on the set really gives it a lot of depth – moving past the easy jazz funk moments of earlier sets, and going for an all-solid, all-soulful approach that really blows our mind! Great stuff all the way through – maybe their best album in years – and a record you'll be playing into the next decade. Titles include "Morning Sun", "Who Needs Love", "Stone Cold Heart", "Where Love Shines", "Blue", "Fly", "If You Want My Love", and "Cada Dia". On Adventures In Black Sunshine, the groove is sweetly soulful, with a jazzy undercurrent that hearkens back to the best west coast soul of the 70s – and Bluey's got the group honed to perfection, playing with a razor-sharp edge that keeps the tunes as funky as they are soulful! Vocals are by Maysa and Tony Momrelle – and tracks include "Don't Turn My Love Away", "This Thing Called Love", "The Principles Of Love", "Everything Your Heart Desires", "Close My Eyes", "25th Chapter", and "Mr Jones". Eleven is a record that's a great testament to Incognito's richly-collaborative spirit – a quality that makes plenty of room here for lead vocals by Maysa Leak, Imaani, and Carleen Anderson – and which benefits strongly from some great keyboard lines by Ski Oakenfull. But as usual, mainman Bluey is the one to thank for the record – because his sense of groove, and love of classic 70s-influenced soul comes through very strongly on all tracks – hitting an on-the-money sound that makes the group, and this latest album, stand head to head with some of the best soul acts of classic years. Another winner from Incognito – not a bit of fluff at all – and a sublime batch of tracks that includes "Jacaranda", "Show Me Love", "We Got Music", "Let The Mystery Be", "Will I Ever Learn", "I'll Get By", "As Long As It's You", and "When Tomorrow Brings You Down". Bonus tracks include the previously-unreleased "To Prove My Love" and "Feel The Real" – plus "Zaius (Ski Oakenfull mix)". CD

40 tracks, at one mighty nice price – and a killer entry in the long-running Soul Lounge series! Think "soul" more than "lounge" – and get past the Hed Kandi-like image on the cover – because this stuff is the real deal – a great collection of Neo Soul gems pulled from the rich catalog of Dome Records – plus excellent tracks from other contemporary labels too! There's plenty to love here if you love our Neo Soul section – and we dare say that the track selection here is as good as we would have chosen, were we to put out such a set. Titles include "Nights" by Sy Smith with Rahsaan Patterson, "You Got Love" by Kindred The Family Soul, "Like This" by Avery Sunshine, "1960 What (Opolopo kick & bass rerub)" by Gregory Porter, "Get Myself Together (souldynamic rmx)" by Angela Johnson, "Zaius (Ski Oakenfull mix)" by Incognito, "In The Thick Of It" by Sunburst Band with Angela Johnson, "This Is What You Are" by Mario Biondi, "Sweetness" by Carleen Anderson, "Warm Human" by Heston, "Never In Your Sun" by Khari Cabral Simmons with India Arie, "Body Language" by Anthony David, and "Teardrops" by Avani. An amazing box of contemporary soul music – 40 whopping tracks, all served up at an incredibly low price! Don't let the price fool you, though – because the work here is top-shelf all the way – a huge amount of tracks pulled from the excellent recent catalog of Dome Records UK – plus a few other bits borrowed from other sources to round out the package. The collection is a tremendous overview of the best in underground soul on both sides of the Atlantic – and titles include "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Incognito, "Stories" by Full Flava with Carleen Anderson, "Spirit (deeper rmx)" by Karen Bernod, "One More Time (Loose Vibez mix)" by Don E, "The Dove (Jiva rmx)" by Julie Dexter & Khari Simmons, "Sausalito" by George Duke, "Something Real" by Seek, "On & On" by Anthony David, "Doin It For Me" by Laurnea, "Are We Lovers Anymore" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Getting On With My Own Life" by The Jones Girls, "Where You Lead Me" by The Sound Principle, "All I Need" by D-Influence, "Future" by Donna Gardier, "They Don't Know" by Angela Johnson, "Sweet Love" by Conya Doss, "All For Me" by Omar with Angie Stone, "Lifetime +" by Rahsaan Patterson, "Come Away With Me (Caves a greater joy mix)" by Incognito, "4 Ever" by Mr Timothy with Rahsaan Patterson, and "Forever & A Day" by Terri Walker. Steve LacyAvignon & After Vol 1 – Highlights From Solo Concerts (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Emanem (UK), 1972/1974. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Sublime solo work from Steve Lacy – a perfect demonstration of the great leap forward he took on the soprano sax in the early 70s – documented beautifully on overseas recordings like this! The core of the set features material recorded in Avignon in 1972 – with Lacy using his instrument in wonderfully expressive ways – not just "free" or "out", but really melodic and lyrical at points too – a side that doesn't always show up in some of his more aggressive solo performances, but which really comes through on tracks like "Cloudy", "The Stations", "Josephine", "Original New Duck", and "Weal". CD features four more previously unissued tracks from these same sessions, then more great solo work from 1974 in Berlin – again never issued before – a whopping 9 bonus tracks in all, with titles that include "The Owl", "The Dumps", "The New Moon", "Dome", and "Holding". ✨✧ Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Stockholm ... LP
Caprice (Sweden), 1968/1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Never heard music from Don Cherry's important time in Sweden – two different live recordings that explode with righteous power right from the very first note! Cherry really took off musically during his time in Sweden – exploring rich new ideas that had never come up in his music with Ornette Coleman, nor on his own American sides as well – really organic improvisations that blended together elements of the American underground with the new European free jazz, and some deeper ethnic touches as well! The first set of work here really showcases that mixture – as it features live material from 1968 with very freewheeling work by Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano – plus Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. The first part of the work is more all-out improv, but the second brings in some Turkish folk melodies supplied by Falay, which makes for some nice exotic elements. These are continued on "Another Dome Session", recorded in 1971 – material that has more of the Organic Music Society mix of collaborative acoustic elements, often with strongly spiritual currents. Cherry plays pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano again – and is joined by Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Great package, with lots of music and notes on this time in Cherry's life! LP, Vinyl record album

Did filmmaking ever get any better than this? We'd be hard pressed to think so – what with Michael York and Farrah Fawcett-Majors running around in the future, living in a hedonistic world in which you can have anything you want, until you turn 30, and are executed! Great stuff – and Jerry Goldsmith's score for the film is equally nice – with a mixture of orchestral themes and other tunes that feature some nice moogy bits that sound all weird, spacey, and very very cool! Tracks include "The Dome", "On The Circuit", "The Sun", "The Truth", "End Of The City", and "Love Theme From Logan's Run", a sexy slinky number arranged by Jimmie Haskell! An excellent set by the same group that served up the Moreno Veloso album Musical Typewriter – led here by drummer Domenico, but featuring Moreno on vocals and other instrumentation, plus the mighty Kassin – who really emerges here as one of the freshest talents in Brazilian music for the 21st Century! The album's even better than Musical Typewriter – quite complicated, with a blend of electronics and gentle acoustic instrumentation, touched up with a few funky rhythms in spots, but not too much so that it gets in the way of the great vocals. Kassin +2 (Moreno Veloso/Domenico)Futurismo ... LP
Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. Hannibal/Luaka Bop, 2001. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". LP, Vinyl record album

Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. The younger Caymmi takes on music of his father – but with really fresh arrangements that turn the tunes into something very new entirely! The key to the record is the instrumentation – which is nice and lean, and performed by a small combo throughout – with a fair bit of Wurlitzer electric piano, which makes for a very unusual, very cool element for the songs – a snakey keyboard vibe that's delivered alongside some earthier percussion lines! The rhythmic core of the record is great – thanks to help from collaborators Domenico Lancellotti on drums and percussion, and Bruno Di Lulla on bass – and titles include "Dora", "A Vizinha Do Lado", "Das Rosas", "Vatapa", "Cancao Da Noiva", "Nunca Mais", "So Louco", "Requebre Que Eu Dou Um Doce", and "O Que E Que A Baiana Tem". A really beautiful little record – and one with a very different approach! Italian singer Fabio Concato works here in a spare setting with the great Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet and Julian Oliver Mazzariello on piano – players whose voices are every bit as important as Fabio's Italian language lyrics – as the three individuals are perfectly triangulated in the setting of the music! The album's a live one, and has this intimate, almost conversational vibe – which, again, comes just as much from the trumpet and piano as it does from the human voice. We love Bosso, and he's very unique in this setting – and titles include "Canto", "Nessuno Al Mondo", "Diamante", "Anna Verra", "Mile Lire Al Mese", "Domenica Bestiale", and "L'Armando". CD

20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 19.99
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson QuintetMJQ ... LP
Prestige, 1952/1954. Good ... $3.99
Nice stuff from the early days of the MJQ – recorded back when Kenny Clarke was still playing drums with the group, and giving them a bit more of a bottom! One side of the record features material recorded from one of the quartet's first sessions – in late 1952, with the tracks "La Ronde", "Vendome", and "Rose Of The Rio Grande". The rest of the record features material by Jackson's group with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and the obscure Henry Boozier on trumpet. That material's a bit more bop-oriented, and titles include "Opus De Funk", "Buhania", and "Soma". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow & black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has wear & aging. Vinyl plays with clicks & crackles.)

✨✧ Enrico Pieranunzi/Marc Johnson/Joey BaronPlay Morricone ... CD
CAM (Italy), 2001. Used ... $7.99
A great idea – jazz piano trio versions of Morricone soundtrack tunes, played here by Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, with backing by Marc Johnson on bass and Joey Baron on drums. The team of Johnson and Baron have a perfect touch of lyricality to open these tunes up – taking lesser-known Morricone themes, and working them like jazz standards to show the depth of composition and possibilities available to the tunes. One of the great shames of Morricone's career is that he wrote so many darn great soundtracks that most of his tunes never got as much variation and acclaim as the work of other 60s soundtrack composers – and hopefully a set like this will begin to correct that! Titles include "Addio Fratello Crudele", "I Malamondo", "La Domenica Specialmente", "Mio Caro Dottor Grasler", "Ninfa Plebea", "Jona Che Visse Nella Balena", "Le Mani Sporche", "Quando Le Donne Avevano La Coda", "Il Prato", and "Just Beyond The Horizon". Professor LonghairNew Orleans Piano – Blues Originals Vol 2 ... LP
Atlantic, 1949/1953. Sealed Gatefold ... $24.99
Essential New Orleans piano from Professor Longhair – an artist who was neither a professor, nor a man with much hair! The chrome-domed pianist had a huge influence on the sound of New Orleans R&B and soul to come – as he played in a triplet-heavy way that was rooted in blues, but provided a key link to the rhythms that would dominate Crescent City music in following decades. This album features original Atlantic sides cut in New Orleans in 1949 and 1953 – about as classic as you can get for Longhair, with tunes that include "Tipitina", "Hey Now Baby", "In The Night", "Ball To The Wall", "Who's Been Fooling You", "She Walks Right In", and "Willie Mae". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 70s pressing! Sealed, but shrinkwrap is open on the bottom seam. Cover has a cutout mark.)
