45 AdapterAluminum Dome 45 Adapter – Silver ... Misc
New Item ... $8.99 9.98
A crucial piece of aluminum that you'll treasure for years! This 45 adapter may be tiny, but it provides a key function when you're out spinning in clubs – as it easily allows you to slide 45s on and off a conventional turntable, thanks to its unique cone-shaped top! The adapter fits on the spindle of any regular turntable (even those old-fashioned ones with the drop-type in the middle) – and its size and design make it a lot easier to switch 45s back and forth than most other adapters on the market! Plus, this super-heavy aluminum version will always stay in place – and it's a solid piece of metal that can double as an extra weight in your hand when getting into an after-set brawl! Misc

Shaun EscofferyIn The Red Room ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $16.99
We haven't heard from Shaun Escoffery in years – but damn, it's really been worth the wait! This album really knocks it out of the park from the very first note – and pushes Shaun way way farther than his previous work, which we really loved a lot – into some kind of sublime classic soul territory that may hopefully get him the international fame he deserves! Escoffery's got this great back to basics approach on the record – still schooled by his more cosmic years on the London scene, but also soaking up plenty of older, deeper soul elements too – yet fusing them in a way that's completely modern, completely fresh, and very individual. There's nothing retro soul about the record – despite some burning Hammond and guitar at points – and the whole thing was done in close collaboration with producer Gil Cang, who also played most of the instruments and helped on backing vocals too. Titles include "Nature's Call", "Perfect Love Affair", "People", "Do U Remember", "Crazy", "Nobody Knows", "By Your Side", "Get Over", and "Day After Day". CD

VariousSmooth Jazz Journey – Great Ocean Road ... CD
Dome (UK), 2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Don't think "smooth jazz", think more "Neo Soul" – as the set's put together by Neo Soul powerhouse Dome Records – and features some of their own great recordings mixed with hipper electric jazz tracks from some of the more soulful talents of the past decade or so! There's definitely an instrumental focus here – although some cuts have vocals too – and the jazz component is much more skewed towards an older sort of soulful fusion from the 70s, than some of the weaker or clunkier smooth jazz styles from the contemporary charts – a classic vibe that really makes the collection strong. Titles include "A Universal Vibe" by Down To The Bone, "Tonight We Dance" by Citrus Sun, "The Girl From Ipanema" by Brian Bromberg, "Never In Your Sun" by Khari Cabral Simmons with India Arie, "Winelight" by Jason Miles with Gerald Albright, "10 Degrees South" by Jonathan Butler, "The Message" by Brenda Russell, "Full Circle" by Jazz Steppers, "The Stars From Here" by Incognito with Natalie Williams, "Lullabye" by Ray Gaskins with Roy Ayers, "Biyah" by Pat Leacock, "Round The World" by Jackiem Joyner, "The Look Of Love" by Steve Cole, and "If You Really Wanna" by Bluey. VariousSoul Lounge Vol 12 – 40 Soulful Grooves (3CD box set) ... CD
Dome/Soul Lounge (UK), 2015. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
One of the greatest values in contemporary soul music – and a series we can still highly recommend even after the course of eleven previous volumes! The 3CD package is overflowing with great tracks far from the mainstream of soul – the kind of current, underground tracks that you'll hear from only a select few on both sides of the Atlantic – with an especially strong focus on UK soul artists here, given that the Dome Records label puts out some of the best of the London scene! There's plenty here to love – including a number of tracks that haven't been on CD before – and titles include "Sleepwalkers (Opolopo rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Lowdown (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Incognito with Mario Biondi & Chaka Khan, "People (DJ Spen & Gary Hudgkins rmx)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Just For One Day" by Imaani, "Music & Its Magical Way" by Jarrod Lawson, "Soul Town (Nigel Lowis rmx)" by Ola Onabule, "Deja Vu" by Angela Johnson, "Bridge Over Troubled Water (acoustic)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Believe Me" by Anthony David, "Ever After (Jiva rmx)" by Seek, "Touch My Body" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Diplomats Of Soul, "Major Bossa" by Khari Cabral Simmons with Sabrina Malheiros, "Change" by Full Flava with Joy Rose, and "Every Time I Turn Around" by Makeda. 40 tracks in all! ✨✧ Jarrod LawsonJarrod Lawson At The BBC ... LP
Dome (UK), 2015. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunner of a set from Jarrod Lawson – easily one of our favorite soul vocalists in recent years, working here in a format that's maybe even more powerful than his excellent debut! The record has Lawson in the studios of the BBC – working through material done for a special Gilles Peterson show, with Jarrod himself on piano, playing as he sings in this magnificent mode that takes us back to Donny Hathaway or DJ Rogers – with Lawson soaring vocally on these beautiful long songs! The piano is wonderful too – a really surprising element that didn't stand out as strongly on Jarrod's debut – and the other instrumentation is only trumpet and guitar, which continues the unique flavor of the whole record – and underscores that slightly jazzy quality that appears at times. We've loved Jarrod right from the start – but with this set he really hits legendary status – on four songs that include the originals "Soul Symphony" and "Everything I Need" – plus versions of Bilal's "When Will You Call" and Anthony Hamilton's "Point Of It All". ✨✧ Rahsaan PattersonAfter Hours (UK pressing) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible, simply incredible – and the best album to date from Rahsaan Patterson! Rahsaan first clocked in at the end of the 90s – as one of the first singers in a new spirit of soul that's now been firmly taken up by the Neo Soul underground. But instead of resting on his laurels and holding onto a surefire sound, Rahsaan's grown tremendously in the years since his last full LP – really pushing his style, deepening his approach, and coming up with a sound that's more powerful than we would have even expected! The album's got a completely solid feel that makes it a near-classic all the way through – spare and intimate, yet done with a fullness and confidence that easily puts Rahsaan in line with some of our favorite male soul singers of all time. Titles include "I Always Find Myself", "The One For Me", "The Best", "Loving You", "Don't Run So Fast", "So Hot", "April's Kiss", and "You Make Life Good". CD

Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Stockholm ... LP
Caprice (Sweden), 1968/1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.99
Never heard music from Don Cherry's important time in Sweden – two different live recordings that explode with righteous power right from the very first note! Cherry really took off musically during his time in Sweden – exploring rich new ideas that had never come up in his music with Ornette Coleman, nor on his own American sides as well – really organic improvisations that blended together elements of the American underground with the new European free jazz, and some deeper ethnic touches as well! The first set of work here really showcases that mixture – as it features live material from 1968 with very freewheeling work by Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano – plus Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. The first part of the work is more all-out improv, but the second brings in some Turkish folk melodies supplied by Falay, which makes for some nice exotic elements. These are continued on "Another Dome Session", recorded in 1971 – material that has more of the Organic Music Society mix of collaborative acoustic elements, often with strongly spiritual currents. Cherry plays pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano again – and is joined by Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Great package, with lots of music and notes on this time in Cherry's life! LP, Vinyl record album

Hi Fi, Late 50s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $3.99
Sweet exotic sounds from the Arthur Lyman group – heavy on vibes and lots of hip percussion – recorded with a gently swaying feel that recalls the best energy of the Hawaiian scene in the postwar years! The set's one of Lyman's early solo dates – recorded Henry Kaiser Aluminum Dome in Hawaii – which you can almost hear in the way the sounds here resonate, and hang sweetly in air. The tunes are pretty mellow, but in a good way – more sonically sensitive than some more gimmicky, sound effect-heavy exotica – and titles include "Adventures in Paradise", "Andalusia", "Yellow Bird", "Arrivederci Roma", "Sweet & Lovely", "Bamboo Taboo", "Granada", and "Ravel's Bolero". Solid golden age of rap inspired rhymes and tight sample-based production from the Soundsci crew – on one of the finest full-fledged hip hop records from Ubiquity in years! Soundsci is the team of MCs Audessey, U-George, and Oxygen with producers Jonny Cuba and DJ Ollie Teeba – and for their first set for Ubiquity they're using some incredible source material for samples – namely the work of Mike James Kirkland and his Mike & The Censations material. It's addictive, inspired stuff! On the production tip, the focus on the raw drums and percussion, wicked bits of guitar and other funkier bits of the source material, and the MCs are more than up to the task of doing it justice. Great work from one of the most groundbreaking combos in the current Norwegian scene – Atomic, a group who really bring strong promise to a long tradition of modern Scandinavian jazz! The set, which has an endorsement by Ken Vandermark, follows strongly in the style of some of Vandermark's trans-Atlantic work – freely expressing its own modern ideals, but also with one ear firmly conscious of a history of left-of-center jazz. The tracks are starkly modern, but have a surprising amount of swing and soul – and the quintet's lineup features tenor, trumpet, piano, bass, drums, and percussion. A pretty darn psych/groovy soundtrack – to what looks like a very strange film! The music is by Ken Thorne – and the tracks are a mix of mod rhythms, instrumental groovers, and some very trippy numbers that use echoey percussion and some electrified instrumentation. A few cuts have vocals – such as "Respect" by The Ferris Wheel and "Touchables Theme", sung by Nirvana, in a style that's almost in the Bob Crewe mode – but the best cuts are the instrumentals, which are really really fantastic. One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". CD

KassinSonhando Devagar (with download) ... LP
20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 19.99
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Speedometer with James JuniorNo Turning Back ... LP
Freestyle (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
Speedometer unleash a great new talent for this excellent album – singer James Junior, who helps the group hit even greater funky heights than before! James isn't just one of those fake retro-styled vocalists who are thrown into the mix as an extra element – but a well-schooled, UK soul talent who's been working for years on a range of projects from session sides to gospel work – a legacy that's given him plenty of time to hone his craft, and emerge here as a singer who almost eclipses the rest of the group! The singer is just what Speedometer needed – a way to help them to really open up and find new territory with their sharp style of instrumentation – including a bit of jazz that we might never have heard from the group otherwise, which James takes to with a solid flair that reminds us a bit of Cleveland Watkins many years ago. This isn't another one of those deep funk albums trying to recreate the sound of soul music from the 60s and 70s – and instead really hits these fresh, strong styles that are completely great, and which make the whole album a delight – a great reminder that sometimes the UK scene can have a much more contemporary soul approach than the US. One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. ✨✧ Danilo CaymmiDon Don – Danilo Caymmi Sings Dorival Caymmi ... CD
Discobertas (Brazil), 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The younger Caymmi takes on music of his father – but with really fresh arrangements that turn the tunes into something very new entirely! The key to the record is the instrumentation – which is nice and lean, and performed by a small combo throughout – with a fair bit of Wurlitzer electric piano, which makes for a very unusual, very cool element for the songs – a snakey keyboard vibe that's delivered alongside some earthier percussion lines! The rhythmic core of the record is great – thanks to help from collaborators Domenico Lancellotti on drums and percussion, and Bruno Di Lulla on bass – and titles include "Dora", "A Vizinha Do Lado", "Das Rosas", "Vatapa", "Cancao Da Noiva", "Nunca Mais", "So Louco", "Requebre Que Eu Dou Um Doce", and "O Que E Que A Baiana Tem". ✨✧ Domestic BearUniversal Root/Topher Nights ... 7-inch
F Spot, 2015. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An exotic, snakey sort of number from Domestic Bear – a groove that's almost dubby at the bottom, with melodica lines over the top – but which comes across more like a slow funk instrumental than any sort of Augustus Pablo remake! "Topher Nights" is a nice slow groove too – laidback and mellow, but still with an undercurrent of funk – and more excellent melodica bringing in some spacey touches to the tune! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Professor LonghairNew Orleans Piano ... LP
Atlantic, 1949/1953. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Essential New Orleans piano from Professor Longhair – an artist who was neither a professor, nor a man with much hair! The chrome-domed pianist had a huge influence on the sound of New Orleans R&B and soul to come – as he played in a triplet-heavy way that was rooted in blues, but provided a key link to the rhythms that would dominate Crescent City music in following decades. This album features original Atlantic sides cut in New Orleans in 1949 and 1953 – about as classic as you can get for Longhair, with tunes that include "Tipitina", "Hey Now Baby", "In The Night", "Ball To The Wall", "Who's Been Fooling You", "She Walks Right In", and "Willie Mae". ✨✧ Public EnemyFear Of A Black Planet (3D lenticular cover) ... LP
Def Jam, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The mindblowing third album from Public Enemy – their second straight up masterpiece in a row – a more densely-layered effort than anything they'd down before or since! Agitprop lyricism laced with soundbite samples from myriad sources that get the point over nearly as fiecely as Chuck's rhymes, and the densest, most dizzying Bomb Squad production ever laid down. Amazing! Decades later, it's as exciting as ever. Includes classics like "Fight The Power", Burn Hollywood Burn", "Welcome To The Terrordome", "Power To The People", "911 Is A Joke" "Revolutionary Generation", "Can't Do Nuttin For Ya Man", "Reggie Jax", "War At 33 1/3" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Def Jam 30th anniversary pressin – with a 3D lenticular cover!)

✨✧ Speedometer with James JuniorNo Turning Back ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Orisha's Party", "No Turning Back", "Just The Same", "I Showed Them", "Homebreaker", "Troubled Land", "Middle Of The Night", and "Mirage". CD
