Citrus SunPeople Of Tomorrow ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $16.99
A really sweet set from this Incognito side project – a group who are even jazzier than usual work from Bluey and crew! The album's mostly instrumental – save for some great guest vocals from Valerie Etienne – and the focus is on longer solos on keyboards, guitar, and trumpet – all spun out over the kind of classic grooves you'd expect from Incognito! Think of the record as a jazz fusion project from the late 70s, with some R&B undercurrents – just the kind of set that only a rare few like Bluey could do so well. Valerie sings on a great cover of Terry Callier's "What Color Is Love", and the album also features an instrumental take on "What's Going On", plus the tracks "Yesterday Detroit", "Cooking With Walter", "Tonight We Dance", "Mais Uma Vez", and "People Of Tomorrow". Don ETry This ... CD
Dome (UK), 2005. Used ... $4.99
UK soul from Don-E – an artist who's perhaps a bit more mainstream than some of his contemporaries on the Dome label, but who has a great sound nonetheless! There's a leanness here that we really like – as Don-E pulls out a few strands of contemporary R&B, but distills them down to a cleaner groove, and shakes off all the BS that might mar a set like this – in a way that pushes the work much more towards current efforts on the US underground. Titles include "How I Feel", "Lonely", "Try This", "Bus Stop", "Keep On Luvin U", "Slow", "I Do", and "All We Need". CD

George DukeDuke ... CD
BPM/Dome (UK), 2005. Used ... $8.99
A recent album from the legendary George Duke, and a great one too – put together with a sense of soul and sound that really recalls some of Duke's best work of the late 70s! The album's got a wonderful balance between electric and acoustic elements – especially at points when George puts the keyboards aside, and steps out on acoustic piano – creating lines that ring out proudly amidst the warm backdrops of the group. George also handles some Fender Rhodes on the record, with a very old school vibe – and in addition to his own lead vocals, the set also features backups from Eric Benet, Howard Hewett, Jim Gilstrap, and Rachelle Ferrell. Titles include a sweet remake of "Superwoman", plus "No One", "T-jam", "Sausalito", "Saturday Night", "Hybrids", "Homeland", and "Trust". CD

Jarrod LawsonJarrod Lawson At The BBC ... LP
Dome (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $18.99
A stunner of a set from Jarrod Lawson – easily one of our favorite soul vocalists in recent years, working here in a format that's maybe even more powerful than his excellent debut! The record has Lawson in the studios of the BBC – working through material done for a special Gilles Peterson show, with Jarrod himself on piano, playing as he sings in this magnificent mode that takes us back to Donny Hathaway or DJ Rogers – with Lawson soaring vocally on these beautiful long songs! The piano is wonderful too – a really surprising element that didn't stand out as strongly on Jarrod's debut – and the other instrumentation is only trumpet and guitar, which continues the unique flavor of the whole record – and underscores that slightly jazzy quality that appears at times. We've loved Jarrod right from the start – but with this set he really hits legendary status – on four songs that include the originals "Soul Symphony" and "Everything I Need" – plus versions of Bilal's "When Will You Call" and Anthony Hamilton's "Point Of It All". ✨✧ Shaun EscofferyIn The Red Room ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We haven't heard from Shaun Escoffery in years – but damn, it's really been worth the wait! This album really knocks it out of the park from the very first note – and pushes Shaun way way farther than his previous work, which we really loved a lot – into some kind of sublime classic soul territory that may hopefully get him the international fame he deserves! Escoffery's got this great back to basics approach on the record – still schooled by his more cosmic years on the London scene, but also soaking up plenty of older, deeper soul elements too – yet fusing them in a way that's completely modern, completely fresh, and very individual. There's nothing retro soul about the record – despite some burning Hammond and guitar at points – and the whole thing was done in close collaboration with producer Gil Cang, who also played most of the instruments and helped on backing vocals too. Titles include "Nature's Call", "Perfect Love Affair", "People", "Do U Remember", "Crazy", "Nobody Knows", "By Your Side", "Get Over", and "Day After Day". CD

✨✧ Rahsaan PattersonAfter Hours (UK pressing) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible, simply incredible – and the best album to date from Rahsaan Patterson! Rahsaan first clocked in at the end of the 90s – as one of the first singers in a new spirit of soul that's now been firmly taken up by the Neo Soul underground. But instead of resting on his laurels and holding onto a surefire sound, Rahsaan's grown tremendously in the years since his last full LP – really pushing his style, deepening his approach, and coming up with a sound that's more powerful than we would have even expected! The album's got a completely solid feel that makes it a near-classic all the way through – spare and intimate, yet done with a fullness and confidence that easily puts Rahsaan in line with some of our favorite male soul singers of all time. Titles include "I Always Find Myself", "The One For Me", "The Best", "Loving You", "Don't Run So Fast", "So Hot", "April's Kiss", and "You Make Life Good". CD

40 tracks, at one mighty nice price – and a killer entry in the long-running Soul Lounge series! Think "soul" more than "lounge" – and get past the Hed Kandi-like image on the cover – because this stuff is the real deal – a great collection of Neo Soul gems pulled from the rich catalog of Dome Records – plus excellent tracks from other contemporary labels too! There's plenty to love here if you love our Neo Soul section – and we dare say that the track selection here is as good as we would have chosen, were we to put out such a set. Titles include "Nights" by Sy Smith with Rahsaan Patterson, "You Got Love" by Kindred The Family Soul, "Like This" by Avery Sunshine, "1960 What (Opolopo kick & bass rerub)" by Gregory Porter, "Get Myself Together (souldynamic rmx)" by Angela Johnson, "Zaius (Ski Oakenfull mix)" by Incognito, "In The Thick Of It" by Sunburst Band with Angela Johnson, "This Is What You Are" by Mario Biondi, "Sweetness" by Carleen Anderson, "Warm Human" by Heston, "Never In Your Sun" by Khari Cabral Simmons with India Arie, "Body Language" by Anthony David, and "Teardrops" by Avani. ✨✧ ImaaniStanding Tall ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great debut from Imaani – the soulful singer who's made some great music with Incognito in recent years! The cover's got a shoutout from Bluey on the front – but the music has a nicely different vibe than Imaani's music with Incognito, as she works here with studio talent Kevin Leo, whose come up with a great new direction for the singer! Imaani's got a firmer presence than ever before – and the grooves have a great blend of underground soul and contemporary R&B – focused, cut never too commercial – in the best sort of Brit soul mode we've come to expect from the always-great Dome label. Most numbers have lean, tight rhythms that really emphasize the hooks in the tunes – and titles include "Fall Or Fly", "Ten Thousand", "Standing Tall", "Please Let Me In", "Struggling", "Let's Do It Right", "Step Back", and "African Child". Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Stockholm ... CD
Caprice (Sweden), 1968/1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 18.99
Never heard music from Don Cherry's important time in Sweden – two different live recordings that explode with righteous power right from the very first note! Cherry really took off musically during his time in Sweden – exploring rich new ideas that had never come up in his music with Ornette Coleman, nor on his own American sides as well – really organic improvisations that blended together elements of the American underground with the new European free jazz, and some deeper ethnic touches as well! The first set of work here really showcases that mixture – as it features live material from 1968 with very freewheeling work by Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano – plus Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. The first part of the work is more all-out improv, but the second brings in some Turkish folk melodies supplied by Falay, which makes for some nice exotic elements. These are continued on "Another Dome Session", recorded in 1971 – material that has more of the Organic Music Society mix of collaborative acoustic elements, often with strongly spiritual currents. Cherry plays pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano again – and is joined by Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Great package, with lots of music and notes on this time in Cherry's life! CD

Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $4.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Solid golden age of rap inspired rhymes and tight sample-based production from the Soundsci crew – on one of the finest full-fledged hip hop records from Ubiquity in years! ✨✧ VariousBang The Box – The Lost Story Of AKA Dance Music Chicago 1987 to 1988 ... CD
AKA Dance Music/Still Music, Late 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Bang the box – a classic battle cry from the glory days of Chicago house – summed up here perfectly with a stack of tracks from the short-lived AKA Music label! The package follows strongly in the mode of Still Music's Kill Yourself Dancing set – and like that one, it offers up a really great look at a tiny label from the Windy City club scene – an imprint who cut some key tracks that barely made it out of the midwest, but which really helped to shape the house-heavy rhythms that went onto inspire countless artists in years to come! AKA only issued records for two short years in the mid 80s – but they really helped push some of the leaner, cleaner Chicago house modes that were bursting into the limelight in the acid years – those cool keyboards and dark beats that still stand out as some of the best elements from the classic years. The notes do a great job of telling the story from the perspective of the clubs and the streets – and titles include "Rock It" by Matt Warren & Michaelangelo, "Bang The Box (bang the house mix)" by Matt Warren, "Take Me Higher (ultimate acid mix" by Nexus 6, "Lost In The World" by Michaelangelo, "The Music's Got Me (club mix)" by Team, "Pleasure Dome (house mix)" by Modern Mechanical Music, "Don't Bring Back Memories" by Matt Warren & Michaelangelo, and "Alternative House" by Michaelangelo. One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! The album feels like some lost session that Gilberto might have recorded in the 60s – before his Louvacao debut – done with mostly just a bit of light percussion from the enigmatic Domenico, plus some help from Moreno Veloso – who also co-produced the record as well, with that great sense of space he always brings to his own music too. A few cuts feature extra touches – a bit of accordion, or some flute from Danilo Caymmi – but the main focus is on Gil, who hasn't sounded this great in years – still able to capture our imagination when he works in a straightforward style like this. Titles include "Milagre", "Um Abraco No Joao", "Tim Tim Por Tim Tim", "Eu Sambo Mesmo", "Aos Pes Da Cruz", and "Desde Que O Samba E Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

KassinSonhando Devagar (with download) ... LP
20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 19.99
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with bonus download – and 3D glasses for looking at the cover!)

Modern Jazz QuartetModern Jazz Quartet Plays Jazz Classics ... LP
Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A stone classic from the Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded back when the group still featured Kenny Clarke in its membership, but already with some of the more serious, somber tones that would mark the combo's more famous years! Tracks here are from a variety of sessions in 1953, 1954, and 1955 – and trace an evolution of the MJQ style from initial more composed renditions of bop and modern jazz, to some of the more ambitious colors and tones of the Lewis-penned songbook. Titles include longish readings of "Django" and "La Ronde Suite", plus "Milano", "Vendome", "The Queen's Fancy", and "Delaunay's Dilemma". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label pressing, still in the shrink.)

Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson QuintetMJQ ... LP
Prestige, 1952/1954. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Nice stuff from the early days of the MJQ – recorded back when Kenny Clarke was still playing drums with the group, and giving them a bit more of a bottom! One side of the record features material recorded from one of the quartet's first sessions – in late 1952, with the tracks "La Ronde", "Vendome", and "Rose Of The Rio Grande". The rest of the record features material by Jackson's group with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and the obscure Henry Boozier on trumpet. That material's a bit more bop-oriented, and titles include "Opus De Funk", "Buhania", and "Soma". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow & black label pressing, with a NJ address, RVG etching, and deep groove. Cover has a 1" center split on the top seam & some light wear – but this is a nice copy overall.)

Orquestra ImperialFazendo As Pazes Com O Swing ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $15.99
Maybe the greatest record so far from this ultra-hip Brazilian group – a set that has the range of singers and musicians coming together wonderfully – in a really rich sound that's way more than the sum of its already-great parts! The album features vocals by Moreno Veloso, Nina Becker, Thalma De Freitas, and others – and features lots of hip instrumentation from Kassin, Domenico, Wilson Das Neves, and many others – a list of players large enough to be the orchestra promised in the title – but moving with a groove that's tight enough to match the work of Kassin or Moreno on other records! Many tunes echo older bossa, samba, and MPB elements, yet the style is pretty fresh as well – aware of the past, but not just rehashing it – thanks to a very inventive presentation overall. Titles include "Cair Na Folia", "Fala Chorando", "Moleculas", "Tamancas Do Caterete", "A Saudade E Que Me Consola", "Mocoto Em Tijuana", and "Apaixonado". CD

Public EnemyFear Of A Black Planet (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Def Jam, 1990. New Copy 2CD (reissue)... $27.99 29.98
The mindblowing third album from Public Enemy – their second straight up masterpiece in a row – a more densely-layered effort than anything they'd down before or since! Agitprop lyricism laced with soundbite samples from myriad sources that get the point over nearly as fiecely as Chuck's rhymes, and the densest, most dizzying Bomb Squad production ever laid down. Amazing! Decades later, it's as exciting as ever. Includes classics like "Fight The Power", Burn Hollywood Burn", "Welcome To The Terrordome", "Power To The People", "911 Is A Joke" "Revolutionary Generation", "Can't Do Nuttin For Ya Man", "Reggie Jax", "War At 33 1/3" and more. 2014 deluxe edition includes a bonus CD of remixes, B-sides, instrumentals and alternate version from the rare 12"s and more – plus new liner notes. Myles SankoForever Dreaming ... CD
Legere (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $11.99
Timeless soul and funk from London-based singer Myles Sanko! Sanko had been a rising talent for a few years, serving as a guest vocalist with funk combo Speedometer and others on the European scene, and he really steps out strongly on his own here. There's a richly melodic vibe that's pretty wonderful – and that gives it an emotional, deep soul resonance, without sacrificing the gritty working band feel that we love some much about modern day funk. He's backed by a strong 8 piece combo throughout, and the titles include "Forever Dreaming", "Light In My Hand", "Shooting Star", "My Inspiration", "So Much Indeed", "To My Surprise", "Save My Soul", "Lonely Dreamers", "Take A Look At Me Now", "Take A Look At Me Now" and more. Includes 2 bonus tracks: "Where We Need To Be" and an instrumental version of "To My Surprise". CD

✨✧ Swingle Singers with the Modern Jazz QuartetEncounter – The Swingle Singers With The Modern Jazz Quartet (aka Place Vendome) ... LP
Philips, 1966. Near Mint- ... $3.99
An excellent set that has the vocal talents of the Swingle Singers backed by the sweet and mellow instrumentation of the Modern Jazz Quartet! Given that John Lewis & Co were essentially local residents in Paris for so many years, it's amazing it took them until 1966 to hook up with Ward Swingle's hip vocal group – but the album's more than worth the wait, as the MJQ really help open things up, and take the Swingles into more complicated territory than before. Milt Jackson's vibes are especially great alongside the groovy vocals – and titles include "Little David's Fugue", "Vendome", "When I Am Laid In Earth", "Air For G String", and "Three Windows". Moreno VelosoCoisa Boa ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2014. New Copy ... $10.99 15.99
A rich new chapter in the career of Moreno Veloso – a set that steps off strongly from his work with the +2 trio, but in ways that are even more personal and poetic than before! The shift is a bit like that time when Caetano Veloso took all his previous experiments and found a more intimate style in his music during the 70s – although Moreno is always very much his own man here, and manages to work with a range of elements, yet still never lose a focus in his musical vision. Domenico and Kassin are still along for some tracks, but the record also brings in diverse production help from Daniel Jobim, Melvin Gibbs, and even Gal Costa – who are among the many partners working here with Moreno and core producer Pedro Sa to shape the rich sound of the record. Instrumentation is a warm mix of acoustic with electric undertones – and titles include "La E Ca", "Um Passo A Frente", "Coisa Boa", "Jacare Coruja", "Hoje", "Nao Acorde O Nenem", "De Tentar Voltar", and "Num Galho De Acaias". VariousButtons – Starter Kit (aka Yellow Pills) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 22.98
A reimagined version of the legendary Yellow Pills compilation on Numero – 20 songs from the original compilation, plus two bonus tracks, new liner notes, and lots of cool sleeve scans, photos, and more! Forget everything you know about rock music in the late 70s – all the punk rock and new wave that's been immortalized over the years – and get ready to discover a whole new world of power pop! At the time, the power pop underground was as important to some ears as the artier and angrier work coming out of the east coast and UK – and the power pop world was one that could co-exist a bit more peacefully with mainstream rock, while still offering a great opportunity for bands on various local scenes. The work here has echoes of more famous acts of the time – like The Cars, The Kings, or The Knack – but it's also got a bit more of a home-grown, punk rock edge – one that comes through beautifully in the guitar parts, vocals, and unabashed hooks of the tunes. The set's a follow-up to the original Yellow Pills set by zine publisher Jordan Oakes – and it delves deeper than even that one, with a real focus on work from the end of the 70s, and acts that never had great chart success overall. Titles include "High School" by Tommy Rock, "She's Hi Fi" by The Trend, "There Goes My Heart Again" by The Kids, "Not My Girl Anymore" by The Bats, "All I Want" by The Colors, "Domestic/Imported" by The Toms, "Sunshine USA" by Randy Winburn, "One In A Million" by Luxury, "She's The Girl" by The Tweeds, "Rave It Up" by Colors, and "Hey Little Girl" by The Kids. VariousKeb Darge Presents Funk For The 21st Century ... CD
Do Right (Canada), 2002. Used ... $5.99
Think funk music has to be old to be good? Think again – as Keb Darge takes you on a tour of some of the best funk you'll ever find on one CD, and it's all by current groups! Nobody knows more about old funk than Keb – as his work as a DJ, collector, and compiler have been keeping the music alive for years. But Keb's also open minded enough to realize that there's a heck of a lot of new groups that have been inspired by the classic grooves of the late 60s and early 70s – and who share his love for totally authentic funky tracks that are perfect in every way, top to bottom with dirty, heavy, messed-up funk! The set brings together 14 recent tracks from the deep funk underground – killer cuts that were issued as rare 7" singles, plus a few previously unissued numbers, all with the sock-hard finish of classic work by James Brown or The Meters – and with the added bonus that these are groups that you could actually get up, go out, and see in a club! Tracks include the previously unissued tracks "Wait Up" by Speedometer and "The Badger" by Connie Price & The Keystones – plus "Texas Rumble" by The Imaginary Visions, "Forty First Street Breakdown" by Naomi Davis, "One Note Brown" by The New Mastersounds, "Got To Be The Way It Is" by Sharon Jones, "Who's The King" by Joseph Henry, "The Matador" by The Mighty Imperials, "GT" by The New Mastersounds, "Funky So & So" by The Sugarman Three, and "Blow Your Top (part 1)" by The Soul Destroyers.
