Shaun EscofferyIn The Red Room ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $9.99
We haven't heard from Shaun Escoffery in years – but damn, it's really been worth the wait! This album really knocks it out of the park from the very first note – and pushes Shaun way way farther than his previous work, which we really loved a lot – into some kind of sublime classic soul territory that may hopefully get him the international fame he deserves! Escoffery's got this great back to basics approach on the record – still schooled by his more cosmic years on the London scene, but also soaking up plenty of older, deeper soul elements too – yet fusing them in a way that's completely modern, completely fresh, and very individual. There's nothing retro soul about the record – despite some burning Hammond and guitar at points – and the whole thing was done in close collaboration with producer Gil Cang, who also played most of the instruments and helped on backing vocals too. Titles include "Nature's Call", "Perfect Love Affair", "People", "Do U Remember", "Crazy", "Nobody Knows", "By Your Side", "Get Over", and "Day After Day". CD

VariousSmooth Jazz Journey – Great Ocean Road ... CD
Dome (UK), 2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Don't think "smooth jazz", think more "Neo Soul" – as the set's put together by Neo Soul powerhouse Dome Records – and features some of their own great recordings mixed with hipper electric jazz tracks from some of the more soulful talents of the past decade or so! There's definitely an instrumental focus here – although some cuts have vocals too – and the jazz component is much more skewed towards an older sort of soulful fusion from the 70s, than some of the weaker or clunkier smooth jazz styles from the contemporary charts – a classic vibe that really makes the collection strong. Titles include "A Universal Vibe" by Down To The Bone, "Tonight We Dance" by Citrus Sun, "The Girl From Ipanema" by Brian Bromberg, "Never In Your Sun" by Khari Cabral Simmons with India Arie, "Winelight" by Jason Miles with Gerald Albright, "10 Degrees South" by Jonathan Butler, "The Message" by Brenda Russell, "Full Circle" by Jazz Steppers, "The Stars From Here" by Incognito with Natalie Williams, "Lullabye" by Ray Gaskins with Roy Ayers, "Biyah" by Pat Leacock, "Round The World" by Jackiem Joyner, "The Look Of Love" by Steve Cole, and "If You Really Wanna" by Bluey. ✨✧ Shaun EscofferyEvergreen ... CD
Dome (UK), 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Why isn't Shaun Escoffery bigger? He's easily been one of the top soul singers in the world for over a decade – and a record like this should be in everyone's collection! Shaun's always had a cutting edge sound in his music – and this time around, he inflects it with a bit of classic soul too – mixing his 21st Century style with a sound that puts him rock solidly in the territory of Al Green, Marvin Gaye, or Bobby Womack – all artists we wouldn't hesitate to compare Shaun to – given the depth and consistency of his music! The record's a stunner – maybe the one that will finally break Escoffery to a bigger global audience – and even if it doesn't, it's one you'll be loving for years – which we know we will. Titles include "Love Shine Down", "Evergreen", "Healing Me", "When Love Is Gone", "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Lost For Words", "Win Again", and "Teachers". CD

✨✧ VariousSoul Lounge Vol 12 – 40 Soulful Grooves (3CD box set) ... CD
Dome/Soul Lounge (UK), 2015. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest values in contemporary soul music – and a series we can still highly recommend even after the course of eleven previous volumes! The 3CD package is overflowing with great tracks far from the mainstream of soul – the kind of current, underground tracks that you'll hear from only a select few on both sides of the Atlantic – with an especially strong focus on UK soul artists here, given that the Dome Records label puts out some of the best of the London scene! There's plenty here to love – including a number of tracks that haven't been on CD before – and titles include "Sleepwalkers (Opolopo rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Lowdown (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Incognito with Mario Biondi & Chaka Khan, "People (DJ Spen & Gary Hudgkins rmx)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Just For One Day" by Imaani, "Music & Its Magical Way" by Jarrod Lawson, "Soul Town (Nigel Lowis rmx)" by Ola Onabule, "Deja Vu" by Angela Johnson, "Bridge Over Troubled Water (acoustic)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Believe Me" by Anthony David, "Ever After (Jiva rmx)" by Seek, "Touch My Body" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Diplomats Of Soul, "Major Bossa" by Khari Cabral Simmons with Sabrina Malheiros, "Change" by Full Flava with Joy Rose, and "Every Time I Turn Around" by Makeda. 40 tracks in all! MGM, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Did filmmaking ever get any better than this? We'd be hard pressed to think so – what with Michael York and Farrah Fawcett-Majors running around in the future, living in a hedonistic world in which you can have anything you want, until you turn 30, and are executed! Great stuff – and Jerry Goldsmith's score for the film is equally nice – with a mixture of orchestral themes and other tunes that feature some nice moogy bits that sound all weird, spacey, and very very cool! Tracks include "The Dome", "On The Circuit", "The Sun", "The Truth", "End Of The City", and "Love Theme From Logan's Run", a sexy slinky number arranged by Jimmie Haskell! Plus, the whole thing comes in a very groovy cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Lounge (UK), 2005. Used 3CD ... $9.99
Here's a great way to build up the modern soul side of your record collection – a 3CD, 40 track set that's overflowing with great music from the Neo Soul scene! The package draws on work from labels that include Dome, Passion, Oyster, and Purpose – some of whom also themselves draw on other smaller labels from the US – which means that the collection offers a wonderfully diverse batch of tracks, and acts almost as an overview of some of the best recent soul from both sides of the Atlantic! Titles include the exclusive track "If" by Rahsaan Patterson – plus "Best Friend's Lover" by Avani, "My Man" by Rosie Gaines, "Ain't Givin Up" by Conya Doss, "Set Your Mind Free" by Hilary, "Taste Of Bitter Love" by D-Influence, "Joy" by Mike Stevens, "Over & Over" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Everything Your Heart Desires (Bluey's Black Sunshine mix)" by Incognito, "Fall In Love (Eric Kupper rmx)" by Tortured Soul, "Right Here (Seekronized rmx)" by Seek, "Hey Young World" by Andreus, "Call" by Angela Johnson, "Detroit Girl" by Raphael Saadiq, and "Compliments" by Maysa. ✨✧ Steve LacyAvignon & After Vol 1 – Highlights From Solo Concerts (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Emanem (UK), 1972/1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime solo work from Steve Lacy – a perfect demonstration of the great leap forward he took on the soprano sax in the early 70s – documented beautifully on overseas recordings like this! The core of the set features material recorded in Avignon in 1972 – with Lacy using his instrument in wonderfully expressive ways – not just "free" or "out", but really melodic and lyrical at points too – a side that doesn't always show up in some of his more aggressive solo performances, but which really comes through on tracks like "Cloudy", "The Stations", "Josephine", "Original New Duck", and "Weal". CD features four more previously unissued tracks from these same sessions, then more great solo work from 1974 in Berlin – again never issued before – a whopping 9 bonus tracks in all, with titles that include "The Owl", "The Dumps", "The New Moon", "Dome", and "Holding". ✨✧ Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Roy AyersVibrations ... CD
Polydor, 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". CD

A great return to form for the legendary Sidney Barnes – known best as a onetime member of both Rotary Connection and the P-Funk universe – but working here with great small combo backing from the Speedometer combo! "Best Thing" is an original by Barnes – sung in this sweet raspy style that gets great support from the funky group – who even thrown in a sweet Hammond solo in the middle! The flipside is a remake of Nolan Porter's "If I Could Only Be Sure" – a midtempo burner that has Sidney sounding even better on vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Danilo CaymmiDon Don – Danilo Caymmi Sings Dorival Caymmi ... CD
Discobertas (Brazil), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99
The younger Caymmi takes on music of his father – but with really fresh arrangements that turn the tunes into something very new entirely! The key to the record is the instrumentation – which is nice and lean, and performed by a small combo throughout – with a fair bit of Wurlitzer electric piano, which makes for a very unusual, very cool element for the songs – a snakey keyboard vibe that's delivered alongside some earthier percussion lines! The rhythmic core of the record is great – thanks to help from collaborators Domenico Lancellotti on drums and percussion, and Bruno Di Lulla on bass – and titles include "Dora", "A Vizinha Do Lado", "Das Rosas", "Vatapa", "Cancao Da Noiva", "Nunca Mais", "So Louco", "Requebre Que Eu Dou Um Doce", and "O Que E Que A Baiana Tem". Fabio Concato/Fabrizio Bosso/Julian Oliver MazzariNon Smetto Di Ascolarti ... CD
Warner (Italy), 2016. New Copy ... $18.99
A really beautiful little record – and one with a very different approach! Italian singer Fabio Concato works here in a spare setting with the great Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet and Julian Oliver Mazzariello on piano – players whose voices are every bit as important as Fabio's Italian language lyrics – as the three individuals are perfectly triangulated in the setting of the music! The album's a live one, and has this intimate, almost conversational vibe – which, again, comes just as much from the trumpet and piano as it does from the human voice. We love Bosso, and he's very unique in this setting – and titles include "Canto", "Nessuno Al Mondo", "Diamante", "Anna Verra", "Mile Lire Al Mese", "Domenica Bestiale", and "L'Armando". CD

Gilberto GilGilberto's Samba ... LP
Sony/Polysom (Brazil), 2014. New Copy ... $32.99
One of the best records we've heard from Gilberto Gil in many, many years – a stripped-down session that focuses on his voice and guitar work – in a style that takes us back to Gil's earliest days in music! The album feels like some lost session that Gilberto might have recorded in the 60s – before his Louvacao debut – done with mostly just a bit of light percussion from the enigmatic Domenico, plus some help from Moreno Veloso – who also co-produced the record as well, with that great sense of space he always brings to his own music too. A few cuts feature extra touches – a bit of accordion, or some flute from Danilo Caymmi – but the main focus is on Gil, who hasn't sounded this great in years – still able to capture our imagination when he works in a straightforward style like this. Titles include "Milagre", "Um Abraco No Joao", "Tim Tim Por Tim Tim", "Eu Sambo Mesmo", "Aos Pes Da Cruz", and "Desde Que O Samba E Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

KassinSonhando Devagar (3D packaging – comes with glasses) ... CD
Coqueiro Verde (Brazil), 2011. Used ... $14.99
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". CD

Swingle Singers with the MJQPlace Vendome ... LP
Philips, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
An excellent set that has the vocal talents of the Swingle Singers backed by the sweet and mellow instrumentation of the Modern Jazz Quartet! Given that John Lewis & Co were essentially local residents in Paris for so many years, it's amazing it took them until 1966 to hook up with Ward Swingle's hip vocal group – but the album's more than worth the wait, as the MJQ really help open things up, and take the Swingles into more complicated territory than before. Milt Jackson's vibes are especially great alongside the groovy vocals – and titles include "Little David's Fugue", "Vendome", "When I Am Laid In Earth", "Air For G String", and "Three Windows". ✨✧ Domenico + 2 (Moreno Veloso)Sincerely Hot ... LP
Ping Pong/Luaka Bop, 2002. New Copy ... On November 11, 2016
An excellent set by the same group that served up the Moreno Veloso album Musical Typewriter – led here by drummer Domenico, but featuring Moreno on vocals and other instrumentation! The album's even better than Musical Typewriter – quite complicated, with a blend of electronics and gentle acoustic instrumentation, touched up with a few funky rhythms in spots, but not too much so that it gets in the way of the great vocals. Titles include "Solar", "Comigo", "Possibilidade", "Alegria Vai", "Aeroporto 77", "Tema Da Zorra", and "Despedida". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kassin +2 (Moreno Veloso/Domenico)Futurismo (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Trama/Luaka Bop, 2006. New Copy ... On November 11, 2016
The long-awaited 3rd album in the trilogy of modern Brazilian grooves from the trio that's recorded under the names of Moreno Veloso and Domencio – and the first one to be issued under the name of Kassin! Following the format of the other variations in the series, Kassin takes the lead here – singing beautifully with a breathy sound that reminds us a lot of Brazilian funk recordings from the 70s – particularly the most spacious, most mellow funk of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle – both of whom seem to have a bit of influence on the sound here! Donato actually guests on Fender Rhodes on one track – and there's some other guest stars here who really keep things interesting – but the main star in the spotlight is Kassin, and he really blows our mind with the depth of his work on the set! The record's a real instant classic from Brazil – a sublime blend of electronic pop, subtle funk, and jazzy flourishes – all put together with a whole that's far greater than the sum of its parts. Genius throughout – with tracks that include "Ponto Final", "O Seu Lugar", "Esquecido", "Pra Lembrar", "Quando Nara Ri", "Agua", "Namorados", "Homem Ao Mar", "Samba Machine", and "Antes Da Chuva". US version features 4 bonus tracks – "Tranquilo (super stereo sound system)" from the Japanese pressing and "Lake Line", "Bow Road", and "Ya Ya Ya" that are only on this version. ✨✧ Matt DennisWelcome Matt Dennis ... CD
Jubilee/Warner (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. Titles include "Home", "Welcome Mat", "Back In Your Own Back Yard", "By The Fireside", "A Cup Of Coffe A Sandwich & You", "Let's Put Out The Lights", and "Your Family". CD

✨✧ JimpsterDomestic Science ... LP
Kudos (UK), 2002. Used 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive set of future jazz from Jimpster – spearheaded by keyboardist Jamie Odell, and featuring some wonderfully London-crafted grooves! The feel here is right up there with the best of the British scene of the past half decade – really solid work that stretches back to a wide array of influences in 70s funky fusion, but which updates the sound strongly with a cosmic London vibe that really stretches things out! The beats are never too broken, and Jimpster lie back nicely in the groove – letting things flow with a really organic feel, as keys and occasional vocals spin out into some massively soulful tunes! Titles include "Deep Down", "State Of Mind", "Fish Island", "B:Mine", "Groove Jumping", and "Knuckle Shuffle". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kassin/Soil & Pimp SessionsMichiko To Hacchin – Chapter 1 ... CD
Speedstar (Japan), 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very cool work from Kassin – material recorded for an ultra-cool animated program from Japan! The style here has all of the charm of Kassin's other work with Moreno and Domenico, but a slightly different feel too – a vibe that's often a bit more playful, and which allows for an expanded range of instrumental expression – stretching out nicely in styles that are sometimes heavy on guitar, either acoustic or electric, the latter with some great effects – but which also features some bolder percussion moments, cool keyboard elements, and other great touches too. The set is super-long – making it well worth the Japanese price tag – and titles include "Gangorra", "Calca De Ginastica", "Descencanto", "Operacao Gafanhoto", "Prova De Amor", "Cuidado", and "Pra Te Libertar". Also features the "tv version" of "Paraiso" – played by Soil & Pimp Sessions! CD
