✨✧ Shaun EscofferyIn The Red Room ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We haven't heard from Shaun Escoffery in years – but damn, it's really been worth the wait! This album really knocks it out of the park from the very first note – and pushes Shaun way way farther than his previous work, which we really loved a lot – into some kind of sublime classic soul territory that may hopefully get him the international fame he deserves! Escoffery's got this great back to basics approach on the record – still schooled by his more cosmic years on the London scene, but also soaking up plenty of older, deeper soul elements too – yet fusing them in a way that's completely modern, completely fresh, and very individual. There's nothing retro soul about the record – despite some burning Hammond and guitar at points – and the whole thing was done in close collaboration with producer Gil Cang, who also played most of the instruments and helped on backing vocals too. Titles include "Nature's Call", "Perfect Love Affair", "People", "Do U Remember", "Crazy", "Nobody Knows", "By Your Side", "Get Over", and "Day After Day". CD

✨✧ ImaaniStanding Tall ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great debut from Imaani – the soulful singer who's made some great music with Incognito in recent years! The cover's got a shoutout from Bluey on the front – but the music has a nicely different vibe than Imaani's music with Incognito, as she works here with studio talent Kevin Leo, whose come up with a great new direction for the singer! Imaani's got a firmer presence than ever before – and the grooves have a great blend of underground soul and contemporary R&B – focused, cut never too commercial – in the best sort of Brit soul mode we've come to expect from the always-great Dome label. Most numbers have lean, tight rhythms that really emphasize the hooks in the tunes – and titles include "Fall Or Fly", "Ten Thousand", "Standing Tall", "Please Let Me In", "Struggling", "Let's Do It Right", "Step Back", and "African Child". Ubiquity, 2013. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
Solid golden age of rap inspired rhymes and tight sample-based production from the Soundsci crew – on one of the finest full-fledged hip hop records from Ubiquity in years! Soundsci is the team of MCs Audessey, U-George, and Oxygen with producers Jonny Cuba and DJ Ollie Teeba – and for their first set for Ubiquity they're using some incredible source material for samples – namely the work of Mike James Kirkland and his Mike & The Censations material. It's addictive, inspired stuff! On the production tip, the focus on the raw drums and percussion, wicked bits of guitar and other funkier bits of the source material, and the MCs are more than up to the task of doing it justice. Nice! Includes "Understand The Message", "The Inner Energy", "That's Life", "Bust 'Em (In The Dome)", "Coastin'", "Soundsational", "Deception", "Rastaman", "Get Even" and "Styles". ✨✧ Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Stockholm ... LP
Caprice (Sweden), 1968/1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Never heard music from Don Cherry's important time in Sweden – two different live recordings that explode with righteous power right from the very first note! Cherry really took off musically during his time in Sweden – exploring rich new ideas that had never come up in his music with Ornette Coleman, nor on his own American sides as well – really organic improvisations that blended together elements of the American underground with the new European free jazz, and some deeper ethnic touches as well! The first set of work here really showcases that mixture – as it features live material from 1968 with very freewheeling work by Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano – plus Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. The first part of the work is more all-out improv, but the second brings in some Turkish folk melodies supplied by Falay, which makes for some nice exotic elements. These are continued on "Another Dome Session", recorded in 1971 – material that has more of the Organic Music Society mix of collaborative acoustic elements, often with strongly spiritual currents. Cherry plays pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano again – and is joined by Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Great package, with lots of music and notes on this time in Cherry's life! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Did filmmaking ever get any better than this? We'd be hard pressed to think so – what with Michael York and Farrah Fawcett-Majors running around in the future, living in a hedonistic world in which you can have anything you want, until you turn 30, and are executed! Great stuff – and Jerry Goldsmith's score for the film is equally nice – with a mixture of orchestral themes and other tunes that feature some nice moogy bits that sound all weird, spacey, and very very cool! Tracks include "The Dome", "On The Circuit", "The Sun", "The Truth", "End Of The City", and "Love Theme From Logan's Run", a sexy slinky number arranged by Jimmie Haskell! Rufus without Chaka Khan – but a surprisingly nice set, nonetheless! The album features various members of the group on lead vocals – singing in a warm, compressed style that's got the same sort of AOR sound as the group's jazzy grooves at the time. The overall musicianship is still quite nice – a commercial take on jazz funk, but played to perfection, thanks to the tightness of the ensemble. Titles include the instrumental "Red Hot Poker", plus "Dancin Mood", "Don't You Sit Alone", "Bet My Dreams", "Pleasure Dome", and "Life In The City". LP, Vinyl record album

Roy AyersVibrations ... CD
Polydor, 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". CD

A great return to form for the legendary Sidney Barnes – known best as a onetime member of both Rotary Connection and the P-Funk universe – but working here with great small combo backing from the Speedometer combo! "Best Thing" is an original by Barnes – sung in this sweet raspy style that gets great support from the funky group – who even thrown in a sweet Hammond solo in the middle! KassinSonhando Devagar (with download) ... LP
20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 19.99
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album

The mindblowing third album from Public Enemy – their second straight up masterpiece in a row – a more densely-layered effort than anything they'd down before or since! Agitprop lyricism laced with soundbite samples from myriad sources that get the point over nearly as fiecely as Chuck's rhymes, and the densest, most dizzying Bomb Squad production ever laid down. Amazing! Decades later, it's as exciting as ever. Speedometer with James JuniorNo Turning Back ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $14.99
Speedometer unleash a great new talent for this excellent album – singer James Junior, who helps the group hit even greater funky heights than before! James isn't just one of those fake retro-styled vocalists who are thrown into the mix as an extra element – but a well-schooled, UK soul talent who's been working for years on a range of projects from session sides to gospel work – a legacy that's given him plenty of time to hone his craft, and emerge here as a singer who almost eclipses the rest of the group! The singer is just what Speedometer needed – a way to help them to really open up and find new territory with their sharp style of instrumentation – including a bit of jazz that we might never have heard from the group otherwise, which James takes to with a solid flair that reminds us a bit of Cleveland Watkins many years ago. This isn't another one of those deep funk albums trying to recreate the sound of soul music from the 60s and 70s – and instead really hits these fresh, strong styles that are completely great, and which make the whole album a delight – a great reminder that sometimes the UK scene can have a much more contemporary soul approach than the US. Titles include "Orisha's Party", "No Turning Back", "Just The Same", "I Showed Them", "Homebreaker", "Troubled Land", "Middle Of The Night", and "Mirage". CD

One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. A set that's awash in cascading piano notes from the hands of Giovanni Di Domenico – a player who doesn't like to leave any space between the notes, and instead takes a musical path that has plenty of steps along the way! His approach is dramatic, but still relatively melodic – not as freely obtuse as a Cecil Taylor, although still played with a similar fire on the keyboard – and given strong support here in the dynamic drums of Chris Corsano, and the subtle but powerful bass work of Peter Jacquemyn, a player who's often reaching for so many unusual notes and phrasings, he's kind of dipping in and out of the landscape from the back. Stunning duets between Giuseppi Bassi on bass and Domenico Sanna on piano – played at a level that really seems to put equal focus on both instruments throughout – as the musicians effortlessly shift between melody and rhythm, and create some amazing sounds in the process! Bassi's instrument is wonderfully upfront in the mix – giving the album this rich, bottom-heavy sound, even in the more subtle moments – which seems to create a flow that unlocks notes on Sanna's piano in this wonderful way – sometimes tippling lightly, sometimes with more complicated phrasing – always full of color and imagination throughout. Metronome/Sonorama (Germany), 1961. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible document of the growth of the European jazz scene in the postwar years – a set recorded in Berlin, but featuring a host of the best players from all over the continent! The mix of musicians here is wonderful – similar to some of the great boder-crossing experiments from Saba/MPS a few years later – but still wonderfully fresh in this setting – as modern jazz giants from the other side of the Atlantic come together with amazing clarity of sound – and a host of fresh ideas that really set them apart from their contemporaries in the US! The set features a driving take on "Haitian Fight Song" with Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, Arne Domnerus on alto, Hans Koller on tenor, and both Martial Solal and Tete Montoliu on piano. Other numbers include a version of "Am I Blue" with vocals by Monica Zetterlund, "Blue Monk" by a Montoliu trio, "Hittin The Blues" with vibes by Fats Said and guitar from Franco Cerri, "Gone With The Wind" with Arne Domernus on alto and Ronnie Ross on baritone, "3 + 3" with Domerus and ross – plus Koller on tenor and Cerri on guitar, and "Avertissez-Moi" by a larger group with Martial Solal on piano, Koller on tenor, Domerus on alto, Goykovich on trumpet, and Sadi on vibes! ✨✧ Speedometer with James JuniorNo Turning Back ... LP
Freestyle (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album
