Shaun EscofferyIn The Red Room ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $9.99
We haven't heard from Shaun Escoffery in years – but damn, it's really been worth the wait! This album really knocks it out of the park from the very first note – and pushes Shaun way way farther than his previous work, which we really loved a lot – into some kind of sublime classic soul territory that may hopefully get him the international fame he deserves! Escoffery's got this great back to basics approach on the record – still schooled by his more cosmic years on the London scene, but also soaking up plenty of older, deeper soul elements too – yet fusing them in a way that's completely modern, completely fresh, and very individual. There's nothing retro soul about the record – despite some burning Hammond and guitar at points – and the whole thing was done in close collaboration with producer Gil Cang, who also played most of the instruments and helped on backing vocals too. Titles include "Nature's Call", "Perfect Love Affair", "People", "Do U Remember", "Crazy", "Nobody Knows", "By Your Side", "Get Over", and "Day After Day". CD

VariousSmooth Jazz Journey – Great Ocean Road ... CD
Dome (UK), 2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Don't think "smooth jazz", think more "Neo Soul" – as the set's put together by Neo Soul powerhouse Dome Records – and features some of their own great recordings mixed with hipper electric jazz tracks from some of the more soulful talents of the past decade or so! There's definitely an instrumental focus here – although some cuts have vocals too – and the jazz component is much more skewed towards an older sort of soulful fusion from the 70s, than some of the weaker or clunkier smooth jazz styles from the contemporary charts – a classic vibe that really makes the collection strong. Titles include "A Universal Vibe" by Down To The Bone, "Tonight We Dance" by Citrus Sun, "The Girl From Ipanema" by Brian Bromberg, "Never In Your Sun" by Khari Cabral Simmons with India Arie, "Winelight" by Jason Miles with Gerald Albright, "10 Degrees South" by Jonathan Butler, "The Message" by Brenda Russell, "Full Circle" by Jazz Steppers, "The Stars From Here" by Incognito with Natalie Williams, "Lullabye" by Ray Gaskins with Roy Ayers, "Biyah" by Pat Leacock, "Round The World" by Jackiem Joyner, "The Look Of Love" by Steve Cole, and "If You Really Wanna" by Bluey. ✨✧ IncognitoWho Needs Love ... LP
Dome (UK), 2002. Used 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Do these guys ever lose their touch? We think not – as this album, the group's umpteenth, is pretty darn great! Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick pulled out all the stops on this set – working with a range of vocalists that includes Joy Rose, Kelli Sae, Tony Momrelle, Joy Malcolm, and Brazilian soul legend Ed Motta! The range of voices on the set really gives it a lot of depth – moving past the easy jazz funk moments of earlier sets, and going for an all-solid, all-soulful approach that really blows our mind! Great stuff all the way through – maybe their best album in years – and a record you'll be playing into the next decade. Titles include "Morning Sun", "Who Needs Love", "Stone Cold Heart", "Where Love Shines", "Blue", "Fly", "If You Want My Love", and "Cada Dia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSoul Lounge Vol 12 – 40 Soulful Grooves (3CD box set) ... CD
Dome/Soul Lounge (UK), 2015. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest values in contemporary soul music – and a series we can still highly recommend even after the course of eleven previous volumes! The 3CD package is overflowing with great tracks far from the mainstream of soul – the kind of current, underground tracks that you'll hear from only a select few on both sides of the Atlantic – with an especially strong focus on UK soul artists here, given that the Dome Records label puts out some of the best of the London scene! There's plenty here to love – including a number of tracks that haven't been on CD before – and titles include "Sleepwalkers (Opolopo rmx)" by Jarrod Lawson, "Lowdown (Ski Oakenfull rmx)" by Incognito with Mario Biondi & Chaka Khan, "People (DJ Spen & Gary Hudgkins rmx)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Just For One Day" by Imaani, "Music & Its Magical Way" by Jarrod Lawson, "Soul Town (Nigel Lowis rmx)" by Ola Onabule, "Deja Vu" by Angela Johnson, "Bridge Over Troubled Water (acoustic)" by Shaun Escoffery, "Believe Me" by Anthony David, "Ever After (Jiva rmx)" by Seek, "Touch My Body" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Brighter Tomorrow" by Diplomats Of Soul, "Major Bossa" by Khari Cabral Simmons with Sabrina Malheiros, "Change" by Full Flava with Joy Rose, and "Every Time I Turn Around" by Makeda. 40 tracks in all! Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Tracks include "The Dome", "On The Circuit", "The Sun", "The Truth", "End Of The City", and "Love Theme From Logan's Run", a sexy slinky number arranged by Jimmie Haskell! Here's a great way to build up the modern soul side of your record collection – a 3CD, 40 track set that's overflowing with great music from the Neo Soul scene! The package draws on work from labels that include Dome, Passion, Oyster, and Purpose – some of whom also themselves draw on other smaller labels from the US – which means that the collection offers a wonderfully diverse batch of tracks, and acts almost as an overview of some of the best recent soul from both sides of the Atlantic! Titles include the exclusive track "If" by Rahsaan Patterson – plus "Best Friend's Lover" by Avani, "My Man" by Rosie Gaines, "Ain't Givin Up" by Conya Doss, "Set Your Mind Free" by Hilary, "Taste Of Bitter Love" by D-Influence, "Joy" by Mike Stevens, "Over & Over" by Cooly's Hot Box, "Everything Your Heart Desires (Bluey's Black Sunshine mix)" by Incognito, "Fall In Love (Eric Kupper rmx)" by Tortured Soul, "Right Here (Seekronized rmx)" by Seek, "Hey Young World" by Andreus, "Call" by Angela Johnson, "Detroit Girl" by Raphael Saadiq, and "Compliments" by Maysa. ✨✧ Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Stockholm ... LP
Caprice (Sweden), 1968/1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Never heard music from Don Cherry's important time in Sweden – two different live recordings that explode with righteous power right from the very first note! Cherry really took off musically during his time in Sweden – exploring rich new ideas that had never come up in his music with Ornette Coleman, nor on his own American sides as well – really organic improvisations that blended together elements of the American underground with the new European free jazz, and some deeper ethnic touches as well! The first set of work here really showcases that mixture – as it features live material from 1968 with very freewheeling work by Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano – plus Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. The first part of the work is more all-out improv, but the second brings in some Turkish folk melodies supplied by Falay, which makes for some nice exotic elements. These are continued on "Another Dome Session", recorded in 1971 – material that has more of the Organic Music Society mix of collaborative acoustic elements, often with strongly spiritual currents. Cherry plays pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano again – and is joined by Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Great package, with lots of music and notes on this time in Cherry's life! LP, Vinyl record album

Emanem (UK), 1972/1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime solo work from Steve Lacy – a perfect demonstration of the great leap forward he took on the soprano sax in the early 70s – documented beautifully on overseas recordings like this! The core of the set features material recorded in Avignon in 1972 – with Lacy using his instrument in wonderfully expressive ways – not just "free" or "out", but really melodic and lyrical at points too – a side that doesn't always show up in some of his more aggressive solo performances, but which really comes through on tracks like "Cloudy", "The Stations", "Josephine", "Original New Duck", and "Weal". CD features four more previously unissued tracks from these same sessions, then more great solo work from 1974 in Berlin – again never issued before – a whopping 9 bonus tracks in all, with titles that include "The Owl", "The Dumps", "The New Moon", "Dome", and "Holding". Ubiquity, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Solid golden age of rap inspired rhymes and tight sample-based production from the Soundsci crew – on one of the finest full-fledged hip hop records from Ubiquity in years! Soundsci is the team of MCs Audessey, U-George, and Oxygen with producers Jonny Cuba and DJ Ollie Teeba – and for their first set for Ubiquity they're using some incredible source material for samples – namely the work of Mike James Kirkland and his Mike & The Censations material. It's addictive, inspired stuff! On the production tip, the focus on the raw drums and percussion, wicked bits of guitar and other funkier bits of the source material, and the MCs are more than up to the task of doing it justice. Roy AyersVibrations ... CD
Polydor, 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". CD

The younger Caymmi takes on music of his father – but with really fresh arrangements that turn the tunes into something very new entirely! The key to the record is the instrumentation – which is nice and lean, and performed by a small combo throughout – with a fair bit of Wurlitzer electric piano, which makes for a very unusual, very cool element for the songs – a snakey keyboard vibe that's delivered alongside some earthier percussion lines! The rhythmic core of the record is great – thanks to help from collaborators Domenico Lancellotti on drums and percussion, and Bruno Di Lulla on bass – and titles include "Dora", "A Vizinha Do Lado", "Das Rosas", "Vatapa", "Cancao Da Noiva", "Nunca Mais", "So Louco", "Requebre Que Eu Dou Um Doce", and "O Que E Que A Baiana Tem". A really beautiful little record – and one with a very different approach! Italian singer Fabio Concato works here in a spare setting with the great Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet and Julian Oliver Mazzariello on piano – players whose voices are every bit as important as Fabio's Italian language lyrics – as the three individuals are perfectly triangulated in the setting of the music! The album's a live one, and has this intimate, almost conversational vibe – which, again, comes just as much from the trumpet and piano as it does from the human voice. We love Bosso, and he's very unique in this setting – and titles include "Canto", "Nessuno Al Mondo", "Diamante", "Anna Verra", "Mile Lire Al Mese", "Domenica Bestiale", and "L'Armando". CD

A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. Gilberto GilGilberto's Samba ... LP
Sony/Polysom (Brazil), 2014. New Copy ... $32.99
One of the best records we've heard from Gilberto Gil in many, many years – a stripped-down session that focuses on his voice and guitar work – in a style that takes us back to Gil's earliest days in music! The album feels like some lost session that Gilberto might have recorded in the 60s – before his Louvacao debut – done with mostly just a bit of light percussion from the enigmatic Domenico, plus some help from Moreno Veloso – who also co-produced the record as well, with that great sense of space he always brings to his own music too. A few cuts feature extra touches – a bit of accordion, or some flute from Danilo Caymmi – but the main focus is on Gil, who hasn't sounded this great in years – still able to capture our imagination when he works in a straightforward style like this. Titles include "Milagre", "Um Abraco No Joao", "Tim Tim Por Tim Tim", "Eu Sambo Mesmo", "Aos Pes Da Cruz", and "Desde Que O Samba E Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

Victor (Japan), 2009. Used ... $19.99
A second serving of soundtrack work from Kamal Kassin – and like the first, music recorded for a very cool animated program from Japan! The styles here are nicely varied – some rhythmically complex, like Kassin's projects with Domenico and Moreno Veloso – some filled with amazing horn charts that almost remind us of the most sublime arrangements by Moacir Santos – and some a bit spare, with a new sensitivity that really makes us love Kassin's music even more than before. There's a bit of vocals on a few tracks – sunb by Aurea Martins, Bnegao, Manu Valdez, and others – but most tracks are instrumental, and relatively short – so that there's a really great range of music in the set. Titles include "Kroon", "Ritmo Suado", "Ao Seu Lado", "Antena", "Sabadaba", "Cinzas", "7 Cordas Que Choram", "Coisa No 11", "Amor Suado", "Temporada Das Frutas", and "Vaca Loca". CD

KassinSonhando Devagar (3D packaging – comes with glasses) ... CD
Coqueiro Verde (Brazil), 2011. Used ... $14.99
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". CD
(Pretty cool 3D artwork.)

Professor LonghairNew Orleans Piano ... LP
Atlantic, 1949/1953. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
Essential New Orleans piano from Professor Longhair – an artist who was neither a professor, nor a man with much hair! The chrome-domed pianist had a huge influence on the sound of New Orleans R&B and soul to come – as he played in a triplet-heavy way that was rooted in blues, but provided a key link to the rhythms that would dominate Crescent City music in following decades. This album features original Atlantic sides cut in New Orleans in 1949 and 1953 – about as classic as you can get for Longhair, with tunes that include "Tipitina", "Hey Now Baby", "In The Night", "Ball To The Wall", "Who's Been Fooling You", "She Walks Right In", and "Willie Mae". Public EnemyFear Of A Black Planet ... LP
Def Jam, 1990. Very Good+ ... $43.99
The mindblowing third album from Public Enemy – their second straight up masterpiece in a row – a more densely-layered effort than anything they'd down before or since! Agitprop lyricism laced with soundbite samples from myriad sources that get the point over nearly as fiecely as Chuck's rhymes, and the densest, most dizzying Bomb Squad production ever laid down. Amazing! Decades later, it's as exciting as ever. Includes classics like "Fight The Power", Burn Hollywood Burn", "Welcome To The Terrordome", "Power To The People", "911 Is A Joke" "Revolutionary Generation", "Can't Do Nuttin For Ya Man", "Reggie Jax", "War At 33 1/3" and more. ✨✧ Orquestra ImperialCarnaval So Ano Que Vem ... CD
Som Livre (Brazil), 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A long-awaited release by an incredible Brazilian group – an ensemble made up of some of our favorite contemporary artists from the scene – including the trio of Moreno Veloso, Domenico, and Kassin! The style here is somewhat like work from those three, but also somewhat more traditional too – rooted in warmer, jazzier tones that stretch back to the bossa, and which have some echoes of samba too – all handled with a personal, almost spontaneous feel at times – even though it's clear that the group's put a lot of thought into the way they want their sound to work. Other members of the orchestra include Pedro Sa, Bartolo, Nina Becker, Thalma De Freitas, Bidu Cordeiro, and Wilson Das Neves – and titles include "O Mar E O Ar", "Nao Foi Em Vao", "Erecao", "Jardim De Alah", "Rue De Mes Souvenirs", "Yarusha Djaruba", "Ela Rebola", and "De Um Amor Em Paz".
