IncognitoClassic Album Series (Who Needs Love/Adventures In Black Sunshine/Eleven/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2002/2004/2005. New Copy 3 CDs ... $14.99
Three great albums from Incognito – served up at a mighty nice price, and with bonus tracks too! Who Needs Love is a gem from over a decade ago – and Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick pulled out all the stops on this set – working with a range of vocalists that includes Joy Rose, Kelli Sae, Tony Momrelle, Joy Malcolm, and Brazilian soul legend Ed Motta! The range of voices on the set really gives it a lot of depth – moving past the easy jazz funk moments of earlier sets, and going for an all-solid, all-soulful approach that really blows our mind! Great stuff all the way through – maybe their best album in years – and a record you'll be playing into the next decade. Titles include "Morning Sun", "Who Needs Love", "Stone Cold Heart", "Where Love Shines", "Blue", "Fly", "If You Want My Love", and "Cada Dia". On Adventures In Black Sunshine, the groove is sweetly soulful, with a jazzy undercurrent that hearkens back to the best west coast soul of the 70s – and Bluey's got the group honed to perfection, playing with a razor-sharp edge that keeps the tunes as funky as they are soulful! Vocals are by Maysa and Tony Momrelle – and tracks include "Don't Turn My Love Away", "This Thing Called Love", "The Principles Of Love", "Everything Your Heart Desires", "Close My Eyes", "25th Chapter", and "Mr Jones". Eleven is a record that's a great testament to Incognito's richly-collaborative spirit – a quality that makes plenty of room here for lead vocals by Maysa Leak, Imaani, and Carleen Anderson – and which benefits strongly from some great keyboard lines by Ski Oakenfull. But as usual, mainman Bluey is the one to thank for the record – because his sense of groove, and love of classic 70s-influenced soul comes through very strongly on all tracks – hitting an on-the-money sound that makes the group, and this latest album, stand head to head with some of the best soul acts of classic years. Another winner from Incognito – not a bit of fluff at all – and a sublime batch of tracks that includes "Jacaranda", "Show Me Love", "We Got Music", "Let The Mystery Be", "Will I Ever Learn", "I'll Get By", "As Long As It's You", and "When Tomorrow Brings You Down". Bonus tracks include the previously-unreleased "To Prove My Love" and "Feel The Real" – plus "Zaius (Ski Oakenfull mix)". CD

IncognitoEleven (UK pressing) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2005. Used ... $6.99
Is it only 11 albums so far? Given the number of years Incognito's been grooving our world, we'd have thought it was at least 50 records to date! Yet given the richly collaborative spirit of leader Bluey – and his work with many other groups and projects – added to the always-great sound of any Incognito set, it's clear that the group have had an influence that goes far beyond a straight run of just 11 records. There's always a depth to Incognito's work that few other groups can match – including the countless artists of the Neo Soul generation who've been inspired by their older records, but can never seem to cut a record that's as great as one like this! Of course, part of the strength of the set is Incognito's richly-collaborative spirit – a quality that makes plenty of room here for lead vocals by Maysa Leak, Imaani, and Carleen Anderson – and which benefits strongly from some great keyboard lines by Ski Oakenfull. Simon LawLook To The Sky ... CD
Dome (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $18.99
An overdue full-length set from Simon Law – one of the founding members of Soul II Soul, and a British soul producer as well – working here in a mode that delivers strongly on both sides of his experience! The album's a very collaborative effort – and features appearances from some of Simon's previous colleagues – a list that includes Jazzie B, Caron Wheeler, Maxi Priest, Chante Moore, Lain Gray, and others – all of whom lend their talents to make the album a very vibrant affair! The groove is actually a nice return to the raw funky core of early Soul II Soul – but maybe even with some of the elements of their work before they hit record – some deeper patterns of righteous elements, and a sound that's both rich in texture yet wonderfully straightforward as well. Titles include "Precious Child", "She Walks At Dawn", "Heart Of The Beast", "Sunshine Girl", "Rocket Ship", "Morning Love", "Higher", "Fire On Fire", "Message Of Love", and "When You Love Someone". Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Stockholm ... LP
Caprice (Sweden), 1968/1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 19.99
Never heard music from Don Cherry's important time in Sweden – two different live recordings that explode with righteous power right from the very first note! Cherry really took off musically during his time in Sweden – exploring rich new ideas that had never come up in his music with Ornette Coleman, nor on his own American sides as well – really organic improvisations that blended together elements of the American underground with the new European free jazz, and some deeper ethnic touches as well! The first set of work here really showcases that mixture – as it features live material from 1968 with very freewheeling work by Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano – plus Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. The first part of the work is more all-out improv, but the second brings in some Turkish folk melodies supplied by Falay, which makes for some nice exotic elements. These are continued on "Another Dome Session", recorded in 1971 – material that has more of the Organic Music Society mix of collaborative acoustic elements, often with strongly spiritual currents. Cherry plays pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano again – and is joined by Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Great package, with lots of music and notes on this time in Cherry's life! LP, Vinyl record album

Did filmmaking ever get any better than this? We'd be hard pressed to think so – what with Michael York and Farrah Fawcett-Majors running around in the future, living in a hedonistic world in which you can have anything you want, until you turn 30, and are executed! Great stuff – and Jerry Goldsmith's score for the film is equally nice – with a mixture of orchestral themes and other tunes that feature some nice moogy bits that sound all weird, spacey, and very very cool! Tracks include "The Dome", "On The Circuit", "The Sun", "The Truth", "End Of The City", and "Love Theme From Logan's Run", a sexy slinky number arranged by Jimmie Haskell! PrincePurple Rain (deluxe expanded edition – 3CDs/DVD) ... CD
Warner, 1984. New Copy 3CDs/DVD ... $29.99 32.98
One of the greatest crossover albums of the 80s – and the record that catapulted Prince very firmly into the mainstream! There's a tightness here that surpasses even that of Prince's early classics for Warner Brothers – an unabashed love of a pop hook that makes for some incredibly catchy tunes that are still delivered with a nice funky undercurrent. The whole Prince family is at the top of their game at this point – and titles include "Darling Nikki", "Let's Go Crazy", "I Would Die 4 U", "When Doves Cry", "Baby I'm A Star", and "Purple Rain". This fantastic 3CD/DVD version features a completely new 2015 Paisley Park remaster of the album, done by Prince – plus a full CD that features unreleased songs and tracks from the vaults – with titles that include "Katrina's Paper Dolls", "We Can F**k", "Father's Song", "Possessed", "Computer Blue (hallway speech version)", "Love & Sex", "The Dance Electric", "Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden", "Wonderful Ass", "Velvet Kitty Cat", and "Electric Intercourse (studio version)". CD3 features lots of rare single edits and non-LP b-sides – with tracks that include "Erotic City", "Let's Go Crazy (special dance mix)", "17 Days (edit)", "Baby I'm A Star (edit)", "I Would Die 4 U (extended)", "Another Lonely Christmas (extended)", "Take Me With U (edit)", "God (edit)", "When Doves Cry (7" edit)", and "God (inst)". Tony Valor was one of the most underrated talents of 70s club soul – and he had a strong flair for production, in a way that was as tight as some of the best work at the time by Barry White! This album's a great groover – and features a number of strong cuts with soaring strings, tight drums, and lots of mellow warm instrumentation. Tony's vocals are produced with a bit of a flange, giving him a deep Barry White-ish sound. Includes the funky "Dome Esa Cosa", plus "We Belong Together", "I Want To Love Just You", "Opus 22", and "Midnight Affair". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio Morricone/Andrea GuerraLa Domenica Specialmente ... CD
GDM/Beat (Italy), 1991. New Copy ... $18.99
A film divided up into four different parts – three of which receive some great scoring from Ennio Morricone! The music is a bit overlooked in the Morricone canon – but stands out with some of the stronger elements he brought to his music of the period – especially that understated way of using larger arrangements in more compressed qualities, often hovering below a sonic range in some spots – but augmented by stronger flourishes in others! One big highlight is the 34 minute "I Cane Blue" suite – alongside shorter tracks that include "La Neve Sul Fuocco", "Specialmente La Fisarmonica", and "La Domenica Specialmente". Andrea Guerra scored the remaining tracks, which are from the fourth section of the film – and these have a moody vibe that's not unlike Morricone – with titles that include "Le Chiese Di Legno" and "I Tamburi Della Luna". Moreno Veloso + 2 (Domenico/Kassin)Maquina De Escrever Musica (Music Typewriter) ... LP
Hannibal/Luaka Bop, 2001. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". LP, Vinyl record album

Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the most groove-heavy collections we've ever heard from the team of Andy Votel and Doug Shipton – a set that's got a lot warmer vibe than you might expect from the styles mentioned in the title! Most of the cuts here have a sweet post-disco sort of approach – lean instrumentation fused onto grooves that represent the more cutting edge sound of the underground in the early 80s – styles that definitely learn a lot from the changes on the post-punk world, but which also find a way to keep things aimed at a crossover dancefloor! As usual with the pair, there's plenty here you never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Killing Car" by Philippe Brejean, "The Fremen" by Zed, "My Time" by The Tunes, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Tyklo Punk Rock" by Andrezj Korzynski, "Cruise Missle Blues (inst)" by Sirons, "Horizontal DIY" by 53 Bus, and "There's A Star In You" by Don Gere. Anton Szandor LaVeyDevil Speaks (& Plays) ... LP
Aberrant, Late 60s. New Copy ... $24.99
Very weird work from one of the creepiest dudes to ever emerge from the 60s – head of the Church Of Satan on the west coast – the chrome-domed, pointed-beard Anton La Vey! The album features Anton in both modes promised in the title – first, on a side of weird keyboard and organ instrumentals – material that's a bit jazzy, but also kind of like a twisted take on the use of the organ in the church – as if Korla Pandit had gotten high, then knocked the church lady out of her seat and took the skies on tunes that include "Satanis Theme", "The Mooche", "Temptation", and "Gloomy Sunday". The second half is even creepier – a side-long Satanic Mass, spoken by La Vey, with very creepy organ in the background – the kind of thing that was the stuff of nightmares when we were kids, and still sounds pretty darn terrifying all these many years later! Albore Jazz (Japan), 2017. New Copy ... $14.99
A very different take on the oft-recorded jazz standard mode – as this time around, the standards are all Italian – which makes most of them pretty unfamiliar to our ears! But even the few that we know take on a new sort of life in the hands of pianist Luigi Martindale – a player who mixes lyrical flights with these deep, round currents that are mighty nice – balancing the sonic range beautifully to really illuminate the tunes! The group also features round, warm bass from Stefano Risso – and a gentle crackle in the drums from Paolo Franciscone – both musicians who often allow the piano to dominate, but always seem to encourage its light. Titles include "Caruso", "Una Domenica Bestiale", "Almeno Tu Nell'Universo", "Senza Fine", "Estate", and "In Cerca Di Te". CD

Prestige, Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A 2LP set that brings together most of the material from the first three full-length albums by the Modern Jazz Quartet – all recorded at a time when the combo were first forging their famous sound! Most of the sides here are in contrast to the group's better-known Atlantic work, because the group at this point still featured Kenny Clarke on drums – and although a few tracks here include Connie Kay, the bulk of the recordings are touched by Clarke's tighter, sometimes more aggressive work on percussion – making for a less-than-trademark sound that we really like. As usual, the rest of the group features Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, and Percy Heath on bass – and the 2LP set features 18 tracks that include "Concorde", "Vendome", "Milano", "La Ronde", "Django", "All The Things You Are", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Delauney's Dilemma", "La Ronde Suite", "All Of You", and "Ralph's New Blues". Essential New Orleans piano from Professor Longhair – an artist who was neither a professor, nor a man with much hair! The chrome-domed pianist had a huge influence on the sound of New Orleans R&B and soul to come – as he played in a triplet-heavy way that was rooted in blues, but provided a key link to the rhythms that would dominate Crescent City music in following decades. This album features original Atlantic sides cut in New Orleans in 1949 and 1953 – about as classic as you can get for Longhair, with tunes that include "Tipitina", "Hey Now Baby", "In The Night", "Ball To The Wall", "Who's Been Fooling You", "She Walks Right In", and "Willie Mae". The album's a heavyweight collection of Raney's early work for King – classic singles, pulled together into a full album that's got a lot more bite than you might expect from the domestic image on the cover! ✨✧ Caetano VelosoZii & Zie ... CD
Nonesuch, 2009. Used ... $5.99
Completely compelling work from Caetano Veloso – proof that his genius hasn't faltered at all over the years! The album follows nicely in the format of Veloso's prevous Ce album – with small combo backing, and a stripped-down sound that's light years from what you might expect from an aging artist of his stature – quite edgey at times, and with a youthful vibrancy, and sense of presence that's really amazing! Even when laidback, the tunes have a really powerful sort of quality – one that has Veloso's wonderful vocals right out front, backed by just a bit of guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums. Moreno Veloso co-produced the album with group member Pedro Sa, and the set's got a lot of the energy of his own wonderful work with Kassin and Domenico – although a bit less quirky overall – and titles include "Falso Leblon", "Tarado Ni Voce", "Menina Da Ria", "Lapa", "Diferentemente", "Perdeu", "Sem Cais", and "Por Quem". Luaka Bop, 2014. Used ... $6.99
A rich new chapter in the career of Moreno Veloso – a set that steps off strongly from his work with the +2 trio, but in ways that are even more personal and poetic than before! The shift is a bit like that time when Caetano Veloso took all his previous experiments and found a more intimate style in his music during the 70s – although Moreno is always very much his own man here, and manages to work with a range of elements, yet still never lose a focus in his musical vision. Domenico and Kassin are still along for some tracks, but the record also brings in diverse production help from Daniel Jobim, Melvin Gibbs, and even Gal Costa – who are among the many partners working here with Moreno and core producer Pedro Sa to shape the rich sound of the record. Instrumentation is a warm mix of acoustic with electric undertones – and titles include "La E Ca", "Um Passo A Frente", "Coisa Boa", "Jacare Coruja", "Hoje", "Nao Acorde O Nenem", "De Tentar Voltar", and "Num Galho De Acaias". A wonderful tribute to Caetano Veloso – put together by a really surprising range of artists! The tunes are all classic Veloso compositions – Brazilian nuggets that have been making our lives wonderful for years – and they get fresh reinterpretations by a range of artists that includes The Magic Numbers, Beck, Ceu, Chrissie Hynde, Kassin, Moreno Veloso, Tulipa Ruiz, Beck, Mariana Aydar, Seu Jorge, Toninho Horta, and others – a great mix of Brazilian and American artists who really show the far-reaching influence Caetano's had over the decades. Most numbers are pretty well done – never too commercial, and surprisingly sensitive to the lyrics, while also offering up fresh twists with their own arrangements. Titles include "The Empty Boat" by Chrissy Hynde with Moreno, Kassin, and Domenico – plus "London London" by Os Mutantes, "Michaelangelo Antonioni" by Beck, "Eclipse Oculto" by Ceu, "You Don't Know Me" by The Magic Numbers, "Araca Blue" by Marian Aydar, "Alguem Cantando" by Momo, "Quem Me Dera" by Devendra Banhart & Rodrigo Amarante, and "Peter Gast" by Seu Jorge, Toninho Horta, and Arismar Espirito Santo. Polydor, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige/OJC, 1952/1954. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nice stuff from the early days of the MJQ – recorded back when Kenny Clarke was still playing drums with the group, and giving them a bit more of a bottom! One side of the record features material recorded from one of the quartet's first sessions – in late 1952, with the tracks "La Ronde", "Vendome", and "Rose Of The Rio Grande". The rest of the record features material by Jackson's group with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and the obscure Henry Boozier on trumpet. That material's a bit more bop-oriented, and titles include "Opus De Funk", "Buhania", and "Soma". CD

✨✧ Professor LonghairNew Orleans Piano ... LP
Atlantic, 1949/1953. Used (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
✨✧ Wayne RaneySongs Of The Hills ... CD
King, Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not the usual sounds you might expect from postwar country music – as Wayne Raney's an unusual star from the King Records roster – one who could play harmonica as well as sing, and who definitely brought a strong boogie current to his hillbilly material! The album's a heavyweight collection of Raney's early work for King – classic singles, pulled together into a full album that's got a lot more bite than you might expect from the domestic image on the cover! Titles include "Lost John Boogie", "Pardon My Whiskers", "The Roosters Are Crowing", "We Love To Live", "My Annabelle Lee", "I Done & Sold My Soul", "Gone With The Wind This Morning", and "Catfish Baby". ✨✧ Matt DennisWelcome Matt Dennis ... CD
Jubilee/Fresh Sound (Spain), Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. Titles include "Home", "Welcome Mat", "Back In Your Own Back Yard", "By The Fireside", "A Cup Of Coffe A Sandwich & You", "Let's Put Out The Lights", and "Your Family". CD
