A seminal session from the St Louis scene of the early 70s – one that was humming nearly as much as Chicago was with the AACM at the time! Creative sounds from alto saxophonist Steve Coleman – working here with his Five Elements group, at a time that was one of his most productive! The group have an angular sort of swing – a style that certainly grows out of some more exploratory moments in 80s mainstream jazz, yet which here comes across with a warmer, more acoustic feel overall – never nearly as bogged down by some of the too academic moments that could hold back some of their contemporaries, or even Coleman at some earlier moments. Rhythms are stiff, but still nice and warm – thanks to drums from Gene Lake – and in addition to Steve's alto, the group also features piano from Andy Milne, bass from Reggie Washington, and a bit of tenor from Ravi Coltrane. The jazz component of this wonderful series just seems to get deeper and deeper with each new release – despite what you might think from the title – and this time around, the presence of LA collective Katalyst really knocks things out of the park! The set's an all-instrumental one – and the Fender Rhodes, saxes, and other elements of the group really warm up the core sound laid down by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad – so much so that while other volumes in the series seem to have an artist joining the core duo, this one feels a bit more like they're sitting in on a session that's wonderfully driven by the soulful flow of Katalyst! Tracks are long and beautiful – with a masterful way of building, and a sense of energy that just seems to build as the record goes on – on titles that include "Dogon Cypher", "Juneteenth", "Summer Solstice", "Corridors", "Daybreak", "The Avenues", and "Reflections". One of the best moments ever from the Sun City Girls – a set recorded after the group had soaked up a fair bit of global influences on a trip to India, which really shows in the range of styles and instrumentation used on the record! The core sound is still pretty noise-based – and still often with that tripped-out, sometimes nonsensical approach that made the group so unique – but there's also lots of global percussion elements at play, plus African oboe, lute, bamboo shakers, raita, and more – as well as "waters of space", "stolen casino velvet", "freshly cut foliage", and "Chino valley witchcraft" at play. The guitars still dominate – linking the record to earlier albums– and titles include "Radar 1941", "Papa Legba", "Space Prophet Dogon", "Blue Mamba", "Tarmac 23", and "Cafe Batik". CD

Really amazing music from this very unique group – a Malian ensemble who mix together elements of Dogon roots with 70s electric touches! At the core, the sound here is very rootsy – lots of percussion and quick stringed instruments – played in cyclical rhythms that are extremely hypnotic. Yet there's also some weird production on the guitar and organ that space things out nicely – never too trippy, but with a slightly cosmic undercurrent that lifts the music up into space – giving things a slightly ethereal quality, even when grooving!
