Miles Davis/Dizzy Gillespie/Fats NavarroTrumpet Giants ... LP
New Jazz/Prestige, 1964. Very Good ... $38.99
An odd collection for the Prestige family of labels, featuring groups led by two artists who aren't normally associated with the label. The first four numbers are by Fats Navarro, recording alongside Don Lanphere, Al Haig, Tommy Potter and Max Roach: "Stop", "Go", "Infatuation" and "Wailing Wall". Miles leads a great bop group with Jackie McLean, Sonny Rollins, Walter Bishop, Tommy Potter and Art Blakey on "My Old Flame" and "Conception", and Diz rounds out the set in a sextet that features Jimmy Heath, Jimmy Oliver, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Joe Harris on "Thinking Of You", "Too Much Weight", "She's Gone Again" amd "Nice Work If You Can Get It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original purple label pressing. Vinyl looks great, but has some light oxidation which causes some light background noise at points. Cover is great too.)

Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Max Roach & OthersBop Session ... LP
Sonet, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $11.99
A mid 70s reunion of some of the key figures in the early New York bop scene – all recorded here in great fidelity, and on tracks that run a lot longer than their initial 78rpm recordings! The lineup includes Dizzy on trumpet, Sonny Stitt on tenor, John Lewis and Hank Jones on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Max Roach on drums – making a rare 70s appearance in a straight set like this. Tracks are all bop standards, played in versions that allow for plenty of solo space – and titles include "Confirmation", "Groovin High", "Lover Man", "All The Things You Are", and "Lady Bird". Solid State, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
A pretty groovy record – very different than lots of Dizzy's other work! The set has Dizzy as the main soloist in front of large arrangements by Don Sebesky – sweeping and soulful, in a real CTI style, especially when the label was coming out through A&M. Tunes are mostly a selection of pop tracks, but they're completely transformed by Sebesky – and played with some occasional funky touches that really make the album sound great. Dizzy's got a mute on for most of the solos, and is blowing in a lightly playful mode that almost creates an MPS easy feel. Titles include "Both Sides Now", "The Windmills Of Your Mind", "Lorraine", "Yesterday's Dream", "Ann Wonderful One", and "Tango-Rine". LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie At Newport (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1957. Used ... $4.99
One of the best albums ever in Verve's classic set of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that captures the Dizzy Gillespie group of the decade in top live formation! The ensemble here is plenty hip – with a young Lee Morgan joining Dizzy on trumpet, and a host of other great players who include Melba Liston and Al Grey on trombones, Benny Golson and Billy Mitchell on saxes, and rhythm from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! Although big, the band often had the sharper groove of a small combo – and even when hitting some older moments from Gillespie's earlier years, they still kept a modern edge in their approach – thanks to arrangements by AK Salim, Tadd Dameron, Benny Golson, Quincy Jones, and Dizzy himself. Titles include "School Days", "I Remember Clifford", "Manteca", "Dizzy's Blues", "Cool Breeze", and "Doodlin". CD also features a full bonus side from another album – Dizzy Gillespie with Mary Lou Williams At Newport – featuring Mary Lou Williams with the same group, on titles that include the extended "Zodiac Suite", plus "Carioca" and "Night In Tunisia". Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie Quartet – At Onkel PO's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1978 ... CD
Jazz Line (Germany), 1978. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
The only thing better than small combo work from Dizzy Gillespie is live small combo work from Dizzy Gillespie – as the legendary trumpeter really takes off in a concert setting! This excellent German set from the late 70s is a great case in point – as the tracks are long and flowing, and really show the imaginative solo style that Dizzy can have when let loose in such a format – served up here at a level that's even groovier than some of his American live dates of the same time! The group gets nice and funky at times – with guitar from Rodney Jones as both a key rhythmic and melodic element, and bass from Benjamin brown, who seems to be playing electric – all given tight, sharp work on drums from Mickey Roker. Leo Wright joins the group on alto for four of the album's 13 tracks – and titles include "Unicorn", "Sunshine", "Brother K", "Blues", "Olinga", "The Land Of Milk & Honey", and the massively funky "Diddy Wa Diddy". Classic Savoy bop work from Diz – featuring some sides cut with the orchestra of Johnny Richards, plus some cut with the "Bepop (sic) Boys", a group that includes Milt Jackson, James Moody, Hank Jones, Dave Burns, and John Brown. The Richards sides are great – a bit more swinging than the ones he and Diz cut on Verve, but no less well-conceived. Titles include "Interlude In C", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "The Things I Love", "Moody Speaks", "For Hecklers Only", and "Boppin The Blues". CD

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie's Big 4 ... LP
Pablo, 1974. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Dizzy's Big 4 here are a quartet of players that includes Ray Brown on bass, Joe Pass on guitar, and Mickey Roker on drums – all of whom work with Dizzy in a lightly skipping groove that's a nice contrast to some of his other 70s work! The style certainly has some of the spacious qualities that Dizzy was bringing to his records of the 70s – that post-bop "little says more than a lot" style that we really love – but the overall mode is somewhat gentler too, and with just a guitar to emphasize some of the rhythms of the tune, there's some airiness to the numbers that's really compelling. Dizzy's trumpet is often muted, and titles include "Birk's Works", "Tenga", "Hurry Home", "Russian Lullaby", and "September Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy GillespieJazz In Paris – Dizzy Gillespie & His Operatic Strings Orchestra ... CD
Universal (France), 1952. Used ... $2.99
Dizzy and strings – a surprisingly great combination! Although it was Charlie Parker who first made famous the modernist "jazz with strings" approach, Dizzy does wonderfully here in the format – working in similar fashion with edgey backing from the "Operatic String Orchestra" in sessions recorded in Paris in the early 50s! The material was originally only issued as a number of separate 78rpm singles, but is brought together here with full notes and a few bonus tracks – making for a wonderful album that documents this really under-represented part of Dizzy's career. The solos are warm, but edgey – blown over the top of backings that shimmer with rich colors, but have a slightly modern bent. Titles include "Fine & Dandy", "Stormy Weather", "The Very Thought Of You", "Jalousie", "Sweet & Lovely", "The Man I Love", and "Ghost Of A Chance". CD

Dizzy GillespieNew Wave ... LP
Philips, 1962. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly in the 60s. Rhythms are percolated by the piano of Schifrin, guitar of Bola Sete, bass of Chris White, and some well-chosen added percussion work – and the overall groove is one of the best American takes on the bossa jazz sound of the time, delivered with wonderful horn work from Dizzy on trumpet, Leo Wright on flute and alto, and Charlie Ventura on tenor! Even familiar tunes are transformed by the sound – and titles include "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town", "Careless Love", "Taboo", "One Note Samba", "Pergunte Ao Joao", and "Chega de Saudade". Perception, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful work from one of Dizzy's greatest periods – and a record not to pass up! The set features Diz playing 5 old bop tunes, and 4 new tracks from the pen of the great Tom McIntosh, one of the scene's brightest arrangers at the time, and a talent who was looming large, thanks to support from folks like Diz and James Moody. Moody's in the group – blowing tenor with a quintet that includes Kenny Barron on piano, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums – and his tone is incredible, with a darkness that he'd rarely had before, and the whole group has a mixture of modern tones and soulful grooves that's beyond compare! Titles include "November Afternoon", "The Cup Bearers", "The Day After", "This Lovely Afternoon", "Good Bait", and "Dizzy Atmosphere". LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy GillespieWinter In Lisbon ... CD
Milan, 1990. Used ... $7.99
A late performance from Dizzy Gillespie, but a great one too – and just the kind of record that shows he was always a constantly creative player! At a point when many others would have been content to just lay back and rehash the same old lines, Dizzy clocked out a masterpiece like this – music originally recorded (but not used) for a film, put together in a wonderfully sophisticated jazz soundtrack mode! There's an evocative quality to the record that takes us back to older European jazz film scores of the 50s and 60s – and the instrumentation mixes small group performances with some augmented string passages too. Other players include Danilo Perez on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Grady Tate on drums – and titles include "San Sebastian", "Magic Summer", "Isthmus", "Lisbon", "Burma", and "Bill's Song". CD

Dizzy GillespieWorld Statesman ... LP
Verve, 1956. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A real gem from the height of Dizzy's big band years at Verve – a stunning little set that features a hip larger group that includes Joe Gordon, Melba Liston, Rod Leavitt, Phil Woods, Ernie Wilkins, and Billy Mitchell. The groove here is well-orchestrated, well-placed soul – with less of the playful bop touches of earlier sides, and more of a hiply modern style that shows Dizzy stretching out in larger shades of color and tone. And while the "World Statesmen" cover and image might make you wary of some gimmick on the set, the album's key Gillespie through and through – a deft turn away from the styles of the bop years, into a world of sound that would support his career strongly for years to come! Titles include "Tour De Force", "Doodlin", "Night In Tunisia", "The Champ", "My Reverie", and "Dizzy's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, 1975. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. Side one features the extended "Oro, Incienso y Mirra", and side two is a 3-part suite, "Three Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve/Definitive (Spain), 1954. Used ... $9.99
Two great albums in the Verve Jam Session tradition – both featuring twin-trumpet leadership from Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge! Diz and Roy come together in a nice blend of two traditions – blowing in a relaxed mode that's less of the "battle" you might expect from the title – and more of a friendly exchange of solos, recorded in the open and laidback style of Verve at the time. The group features Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Louis Bellson on drums – and Dizzy himself even vocalizes a bit on the set! Tracks are mostly longish, with plenty of solo space, and the 10 titles include "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Algo Bueno", "The Heat's On", "The Ballad Medley", "Trumpet Blues", and "Blue Moon". CD

Pablo, 1974. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A striking little record – and the kind that both players could only have made with the new freedoms in jazz recording of the 70s! Although Peterson and Gillespie had played together before on earlier Verve albums, the setting was never like this – because the album's only a duet between trumpet and piano, with no other instrumentation at all – yet the sound is amazing swinging! Peterson works almost as a one man rhythm section here – bouncing the tunes with plenty of hard inflections on his left hand – and setting up a swing that Dizzy blows over with warmly muted tones. There's a quality here that's personal – but not in that "oh look at us, we're such big stars" sort of way – and titles include "Mozambique", "Caravan", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Blues For Bird", and "Con Alma" – always a treat to hear in a setting like this! A great little blowing session for Verve – one that has Dizzy Gillespie working here with two different "Sonnys" – Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins, both of whom play tenor on the set! The tracks here are all quite long and open – more loose vehicles for extended soloing than the usual sort of Verve tracks – almost a mini-jam session with the three horn giants in the lead. Rhythm is from the trio of Ray Bryant on piano, Tommy Bryant on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the real stars are the horn players – not just Diz, who cuts some of his hippest lines of the late 50s here, but also Rollins and Stitt, who seem to get a bit more care in recording than they did over at Prestige earlier in the decade. A classic meeting of two giants from the early years of bop – altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie – brought together here in a session that Norman Granz would later list as one of the truest realizations of his vision for recording jazz music! Parker's sharp lines are a great contrast to the robust horn work of Diz – and the players work here with a rhythm section that features Thelonious Monk on piano, Curley Russell on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. Of the classic "big names get together for a session" albums on Verve, the best ones always seem to be the ones with one of the "Sonnys" in the list of leaders. This one compiles titles from the Sonny Side Up album – which featured Stitt and Rollins, plus others from 1957 sessions in which Diz played with one or the other player. The set's a beautiful batch of long tracks with lots of blowing room, and a deep soulful hardbop groove that you don't always hear on Verve. Jazz Line (Germany), 1973. New Copy 3LP Trifold ... Out Of Stock
Mercury, Early 60s/1977. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Nice 2LP set that brings together some of his most striking sessions of the early 60s recorded for Emarcy. This set includes pieces composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James Moody, Phil Woods, Emil Richards, Francisco Aguabella, and Schifrin himself. Tracks are long, and have complicated introductions – then easily give way to the sort of flowing grooves that Schifrin was penning often at the time. Titles include "The Conquerors", "The Chains", "The Swords", "The Empire", and "The Legend Of Atlantis". The set also features Diz playing tracks from Tom McIntosh, one of the scene's brightest arrangers at the time, and a talent who was looming large, thanks to support from folks like Diz and James Moody. Titles include "November Afternoon", "The Cup Bearers", "The Day After". Also included are songs from the soundtrack for the lost Shirley Clarke verite drama The Cool World. Mal Waldron wrote the material for the score, and Diz plays the music with a moody emotionality that you don't often hear in his other 60's work. The recording was made by his great group that included Kenny Barron and James Moody, and the titles include "The Pushers", "Duke's Fantasy", "Coney Island", and "Street Music". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie & The Double Six Of Paris ... LP
Philips, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare 60s meeting of groovy talents from both sides of the Atlantic – and a record that matches the trumpet of Dizzy Gillespie with the hiply swinging vocals of The Double Six Of Paris! The group were a wonderfully groovy precursor to the Swingle Singers – and sung in a scatting approach to jazz vocals that was very much in the tradition of Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross – but also drew inspiration from the earlier work of Eddie Jefferson, King Pleasure, and others. Their sound is great – much more 60s groovy than some other vocal groups – and pairing them with Dizzy gives this record an added punch that some of their other sessions are missing! Backing is small combo throughout – with either Bud Powell or Kenny Barron on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, and James Moody on tenor – and with the presence of Diz, most of the material here is of bop orientation – taken at a fast and lively clip! Lalo Schifrin arranged the whole session too – and titles include "One Bass Hit", "Blue N Boogie", "Emanon", "Groovin High", "Ow", "The Champ", "Tin Tin Deo", "Hot House", and "Con Alma". Beautiful original pressing of this great session that focuses on Diz's committment to Latin and Carribean rhythms. The set features Diz's great mid-60's combo with James Moody (on tenor and Latin flute), Kenny Barron (on piano and bass), and Chris White (on bass and guitar) – plus some added Latin percussion and occasional backing vocals by the group. Dizzy's sound is sparkling and shining, and soars ahead of the arrangements nicely – especially on groovers like "Fiesta Mojo", "Jambo", "Trinidad, Hello", and "Don't Try To Keep Up With the Joneses". Very groovy stuff, and packaged in an amazing gatefold cover, with very cool graphics, and a great booklet! LP, Vinyl record album

Nothing dizzy at all here – as the record's got a confident, forward-moving direction right from the start – a hard-burning saxophone trio, in a manner that you'd usually be used to hearing from a tenor – but featuring the bold alto of Jukka Perko on the lead! Perko works with Antti Lotjonen on bass and Teppo Makynen on drums – both players who have the same powerful approach as the leader, and who nicely balance between freedom and structure – a bit in the manner of the Sonny Rollins trio work at the end of the 50s – but more freewheeling, and really with its own sense of energy! A number of tracks are old jazz standards from the Dizzy Gillespie songbook, but completely transformed by the presentation – and titles include "Con Alma", "Woody N You", "One Bass Hit", "Tin Tin Deo", "Dizzy's Business", "Night In Tunisia", and "Cubano Be Cubano Bop". Kenny BarronWhat If? ... LP
Enja (Germany), 1986. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Although Kenny Barron's always a heck of a great musician on his own or in a piano trio, we're especially partial to his work in groups with horn players – and this album is a great example of that preference! Kenny first came to fame working with Dizzy Gillespie in the 60s, and since that point, he's always had a tremendous ear for the right tones and shadings from horns needed to augment his own soulful vision on the keys – a way of setting up the other players in the group to build on the well-crafted Barron lines, and take them even further into the stratosphere. This set follows that format, and draws great energy from Wallace Roney on trumpet and John Stubblefield on tenor – both at their younger best, and working alongside Kenny's piano with Cecil McBee on bass and Victor Lewis on drums. The lineup sparkles most on the 4 longer Barron numbers on the album – "Phantoms", "What If", "Voyage", and "Lullabye" – all of which take us back to the brilliance of Kenny's best Muse albums of the 70s. Other tracks feature smaller, more piano-centrist groupings – on tracks that include "Dexterity", "Close To You Alone", and "Trinkle Trinkle". LP, Vinyl record album

Argo, 1963. Very Good- ... $6.99
A prime Argo gem from James Moody – and key proof that when he wanted to, he could be one of the hippest cats working in 60s jazz! The approach here is subtle, but amazing – a blend of hardbop with some of the more modern ideas that were coming up in the post-bop generation from the team of Moody and Dizzy Gillespie. The rhythms are quite complicated at times – very fresh and vibrant, but without any of the easy gimmicks that other 60s artists would fall into – like vamping soul jazz or borrowed bossa lines. Instead, working in a combo with a young Kenny Barron, Moody concentrates on fresh timings and complicated changes – modes that push his own work on alto, tenor, and flute far from expected territory – and which also features Barron on piano and organ, George Eskridge on guitar, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums. Tracks include "Zanzibar", "Dizzy", "Ole", "Sonnymoon For Two", and a nice version of "Fly Me To The Moon". Another Bag is hip, angular, post-bop material from James Moody – the kind of album that made him one of the key soul jazz innovators of the 60s! The session's one of Moody's excellent outings with arranger Tom McIntosh – a young talent who helped re-shape Moody's musical vision with his deeply colorful arrangements – penned here for a smallish group, but still breaking out with deeper tones than Moody had ever expressed before on record! Tunes are a wonderful mix of modal, soul jazz, and more introspective tunes – played by James on both flute and tenor, alongside hip players that include Kenny Barron on piano, Paul Serrano on trumpet, Marshall Thompson on drums, Ernest Outlaw on bass, and John Avant on trombone. There are a total of 12 tracks and they include "Dizzy Boogie", "Slim's Jam", "Riff City", "Chicken Rhythm", "Mean Pretty Mama", "Early Mornin Boogie", and "Popity Pop". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mike LongoAwakening ... CD
Mainstream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer electric piano work from the mighty Mike Longo – recorded at a time when he was definitely at the height of his powers! The album sports a rare Mainstream Records appearance from James Moody – who was a frequent partner of Longos on sessions at the time – particularly on some of Dizzy Gillespie's funky records – which bear a lot of similarity to the sharp-edged grooves on this one! The rhythm section is wonderfully tight, and a big part of the success of the set – as they keep things grooving with a slightly sharper edge than some of Longo's other records – thanks to bass from Ron Carter, drums from Mickey Roker, and even a bit of extra congas from Dizzy Gillespie, of all people! Other players include Moody on alto, tenor, and flute – plus Virgil Jones on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone. Titles include "Just To Let You Know", "A Piece Of Resistance", "The Awakening", "Pass It", and "Bitchin". CD

✨✧ Idrees Sulieman featuring Oscar DennardFour American Jazzmen In Tangier ... CD
Sunnyside/Groovin High, 1959. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed document of a very hip quartet – one that was led by trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, after his initial famous recordings for Prestige – and which also featured pianist Oscar Dennard, an under-recorded genius who left this world at a very early age! The 2CD package presents the group in two different settings – one a series of excellent radio broadcast material made in Tangier, with long tracks that really stretch out – the other a set of live performances done at a party (supposedly at the home of Quincy Jones) – which were technically unreleaseable for decades! The Tangier material is wonderful – a great chance to hear Sulieman spin out those soaring trumpet lines that made him one of the important 50s hardboppers in the wake of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis – and the New York material really shows off Dennard's balance of tone and color, even though the recording quality of that set is a bit dimmed by the limitations of the tape. Other group members include bassist Jamil Nasser – who was supposedly the matchmaker between Oscar and Idrees – and drummer Buster Smith. Titles include "Tangier Blues", "Tour De Force", "Pinky", "Visa", "Stella By Starlight", "Invitation", "Circular Breathing Blues", and "Piano Improvisation". CD
