Art Blakey/Stan Getz/Dizzy GillespieDes Femmes Disparaissent/Les Tricheurs ... CD
Universal (France), 1958. Used ... $19.99
Excellent jazz from French soundtracks of the late 50s! The bulk of the set is taken up with Art Blakey's wornderful score to the film Des Femmes Disparaissent – which features work by Jazz Messengers Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, and Benny Golson, recorded in Paris in 1958, with a hip swinging hardbop sound. These tracks make up 17 titles on the CD – with songs that include "Mambo Dans La Voiture", "Merlin", "Tom", "Nasol", and "Blues Pour Vava", plus a few solo drum tracks that are really great! 4 more tracks are from the rare ep-only soundtrack to Les Tricheurs – played by a Jazz At The Philharmonic group that includes Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Coleman Hawkins, and Roy Eldridge. Tracks on those numbers include "Les Tricheurs", "Phil's Tune", and "Mic's Jump". CD

Dizzy GillespieAn Electrifying Evening With The Dizzy Gillespie Quintet ... LP
Verve, 1961. Near Mint- ... $6.99
While actually not as electrifying as some of Dizzy's other albums from the time, this one's still pretty darn great, and features his great group with Leo Wright on alto and Lalo Schfrin on piano. The band grooves with a subtly Latinish vibe, and the tracks are nice and long long long. Titles include "Kush", one of Dizzy's best Latin numbers, plus "The Mooch" and "Night In Tunisia". Dizzy GillespieBirk's Works – Verve Big Band Sessions ... CD
Verve, 1956/1957. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Seminal work from Dizzy – showing that he was a genius in any form of jazz! In the mid 50s, Diz had one of the hippest big bands going – filled with great young players that included Lee Morgan, Joe Gordon, Melba Liston, Benny Golson, Billy Mitchell, and Walter Davis Jr. The work he crafted here was partly an extension of his earlier bop sides, but also a demonstration of his desire to express himself in more expansive forms – kind of a hint of the direction he'd take in the 60s, with his work in Latin, soundtrack, and funk styles. The set combines tracks from 3 different Verve albums – and it also packages the material with a number of previously unissued tracks, and some great liner notes that do a wonderful job of summing up the spirit of the work. Arrangements are by AK Salim, Quincy Jones, Tadd Dameron, and Dizzy himself – and tracks include "Jordu", "Tin Tin Deo", "Groovin For Nat", "Dizzy's Business", "Jessica's Day", "Doodlin", "Yo No Quiero Bailar", "Birk's Works", "Tangorine", "Umbrella Man", and "Mayflower Rock". 42 tracks in all! Justin Time, 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
"Concert Of The Century" is a hell of a claim to make – but this is also a hell of a concert, too – one that features Dizzy Gillespie blowing with an all-star small group lineup – in really stretched-out takes on the tunes, at a level that rivals his best 70s material on the Pablo label! In addition to Gillespie on trumpet, players also include Milt Jackson on vibes, James Moody on tenor and flute, Hank Jones on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all working together as seamlessly as you'd expect! Titles include "Darben The Redd Foxx", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", "Get Happy", "Blues N Boogie", "If I Should Lose You", and "Bass Solo/Manha De Carnaval/Work Song". CD

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie & The Mitchell Ruff Duo ... CD
Mainstream, 1971. Used ... $4.99
Wild – but pretty darn wonderful stuff! Dizzy's recording here in one of his sparest settings ever – blowing trumpet with accompaniment from the duo of Willie Ruff, bass and French horn, and Dwike Mitchell, piano – working in a mode that's really cool, really stripped down, and which has an amazingly understated tone! Given that the album has two horns, bass, and piano – and none of those all at the same time, with no other drums or instrumentation – the format is really amazing. Add to that the fact that the tracks are often quite long, and you get a sweet and introspective side of Diz (and the Mitchell Ruff Duo) that you might not have otherwise heard! Titles include "Con Alma", "Blues People", "Bella Bella", and "Dartmouth Duet". CD

Dizzy GillespieDizzy Gillespie At Newport ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good ... $13.99
One of the best albums ever in Verve's classic set of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that captures the Dizzy Gillespie group of the decade in top live formation! The ensemble here is plenty hip – with a young Lee Morgan joining Dizzy on trumpet, and a host of other great players who include Melba Liston and Al Grey on trombones, Benny Golson and Billy Mitchell on saxes, and rhythm from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul West on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! Although big, the band often had the sharper groove of a small combo – and even when hitting some older moments from Gillespie's earlier years, they still kept a modern edge in their approach – thanks to arrangements by AK Salim, Tadd Dameron, Benny Golson, Quincy Jones, and Dizzy himself. Titles include "School Days", "I Remember Clifford", "Manteca", "Dizzy's Blues", "Cool Breeze", and "Doodlin". LP, Vinyl record album

Allegro, Early 50s. Very Good ... $19.99
Obscure work from Dizzy Gillespie – a session presented with no dates or players, but pretty nice stuff overall! Dizzy's trumpet is right out front, and most numbers feature a slightly larger group – not really a full orchestra, but most likely an octet or tentet. Titles include "Emanon", "Groovin High", "Blue & Boogie", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "He Beeped When He Shoulda Bopped", and "One Bass Hit". LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo/OJC, 1974. Used ... $3.99
Dizzy's Big 4 here are a quartet of players that includes Ray Brown on bass, Joe Pass on guitar, and Mickey Roker on drums – all of whom work with Dizzy in a lightly skipping groove that's a nice contrast to some of his other 70s work! The style certainly has some of the spacious qualities that Dizzy was bringing to his records of the 70s – that post-bop "little says more than a lot" style that we really love – but the overall mode is somewhat gentler too, and with just a guitar to emphasize some of the rhythms of the tune, there's some airiness to the numbers that's really compelling. Dizzy's trumpet is often muted, and titles include "Birk's Works", "Frelimo", "Hurry Home", "Russian Lullaby", and "September Song". CD

Verve, 1960. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of the strongest sides to feature Diz's mid 50s format – a larger group than usual, an octet, with a more tightly arranged style that showed that he continued to develop as an artist long after the days of his early bop sides. The album's also noteworthy for demonstrating Dizzy's great talent for picking strong young talent – as the group features the writing and playing of Gigi Gryce and Benny Golson, plus work by Ray Bryant, Henry Coker, Tommy Bryant, and Charlie Persip. Tracks are short, but backed with that edgey energy that Gryce and Golson brought to their best work – and titles include "Blues After Dark", "Night At Tony's", "Smoke Signals", and "Shabozz". Solid State, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99
A weird batch of groovy tracks from Diz – more of a pop soul jazz instrumental set than a straight jazz one, recorded in 1969 with arrangements by Jimmy Mundy, who conducts a group with Paul Griffin, Billy Butler, and Jerome Richardson. As usual, Dizzy rises to any occasion – and brings out some great work for the album, grooving in a number of different modes as the moods of the tracks change with the backing colors of the band. Titles include a medley of "Aquarius" and "Let The Sun Shine In", plus "Exotica", "Besame Mucho", "Magic Tree", "This Girl's In Love With You", and "Galveston". Excellent reissue of a lost session by Diz that was originally recorded for Limelight, and which focuses on Diz's committment to Latin and Carribean rhythms. The set features Diz's great mid-60's combo with James Moody (on tenor and Latin flute), Kenny Barron (on piano and bass), and Chris White (on bass and guitar) – plus some added Latin percussion and occasional backing vocals by the group. Dizzy's sound is sparkling and shining, and soars ahead of the arrangements nicely – especially on groovers like "Fiesta Mojo", "Jambo", "Trinidad, Hello", and "Don't Try To Keep Up With the Joneses". ✨✧ Dizzy GillespieNew Wave ... LP
Philips, 1962. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A lost bossa jazz classic from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded at a time when Lalo Schifrin was working in his combo! The record's got a cool, laidback kind of groove – one that's miles away from Gillespie's earlier bop work, and which shows him opening up his rhythmic conception strongly in the 60s. Rhythms are percolated by the piano of Schifrin, guitar of Bola Sete, bass of Chris White, and some well-chosen added percussion work – and the overall groove is one of the best American takes on the bossa jazz sound of the time, delivered with wonderful horn work from Dizzy on trumpet, Leo Wright on flute and alto, and Charlie Ventura on tenor! Even familiar tunes are transformed by the sound – and titles include "In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town", "Careless Love", "Taboo", "One Note Samba", "Pergunte Ao Joao", and "Chega de Saudade". Perception, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too. LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic bit of late 60's funk, and a surprisingly slammin' record from Dizzy! The album's got tight, hard, choppy funk arrangements from Ed Bland – who went onto to do some great work at the Perception label – and the group features James Moody blowing hard lean funky solos right next to Diz, in the way that he'd do on some of his own funk work from the same time. The record is wonderful all the way through – killer heavy drums, heavy electric bass, searing sax solos from Diz and Moody – all produced with a mad mad full-on funk sound that will make your jaw drop! Nothing dizzy at all here – as the record's got a confident, forward-moving direction right from the start – a hard-burning saxophone trio, in a manner that you'd usually be used to hearing from a tenor – but featuring the bold alto of Jukka Perko on the lead! Perko works with Antti Lotjonen on bass and Teppo Makynen on drums – both players who have the same powerful approach as the leader, and who nicely balance between freedom and structure – a bit in the manner of the Sonny Rollins trio work at the end of the 50s – but more freewheeling, and really with its own sense of energy! A number of tracks are old jazz standards from the Dizzy Gillespie songbook, but completely transformed by the presentation – and titles include "Con Alma", "Woody N You", "One Bass Hit", "Tin Tin Deo", "Dizzy's Business", "Night In Tunisia", and "Cubano Be Cubano Bop". Vanguard, Early 60s. Sealed ... $6.99
One of the few albums ever cut by trumpeter Dave Burns – an excellent batch of soul jazz numbers with a comfortable easy swing that will make you wonder why he wasn't a much bigger success! Dave played trumpet briefly in the Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington groups – and at the time of this set, he was playing with Al Grey and Billy Mitchell. This album's quite different than his work with them, though – as it's a very tight, very in the pocket set of grooves that feels like the best on Blue Note or Prestige from the time. Burns' trumpet is fantastic – sounding a bit like a young Lee Morgan – and his group features a young Kenny Barron on piano, plus sharp tenor work by Herbie Morgan, a player who recorded as rarely as Burns. Billy EckstineLegendary Big Band (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Savoy, Mid 40s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Amazing work from the early, legendary years of Billy Eckstine – that time when he was fronting one of the hippest backing groups a vocalist could hope to have! Eckstine's voice was already becoming the stuff of legend by the time of these recordings – but thanks to contributions from a host of famous boppers, his band was getting equal fame, too – a really legendary lineup that includes such greats as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie,Kenny Dorham, and Fats Navarro on trumpets; Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, and Gene Ammons on tenor; Leo Parker on baritone; Art Blakey on drums; and many other huge names too! The band was virtually a school for a whole generation of jazzmen to come – allowing them to play together, get to know each other, and spin off in important small groups – much in the way the Kenton group a few years later allowed so much development on the west coast. And amidst all this great music, Billy's vocals have never sounded better – much bolder and hard-swinging than in later years! 2CDs, great notes, and a whopping 41 tracks in all. CD

A bold and original statement from trumpeter Jon Faddis – a player who worked on countless large group and studio sessions over the years, but who rarely got to record as a leader! This set may well be one of Faddis' most jazz-based outings – as it features a stripped-down quartet with Rene Rosnes on piano, and an open, airy sound that offers Jon plenty of room to blow. His trumpet still has that pinched and blasting style learned from Dizzy Gillespie – but also soars around nicely with the lively rhythms of the tunes. The album sports a rare Mainstream Records appearance from James Moody – who was a frequent partner of Longos on sessions at the time – particularly on some of Dizzy Gillespie's funky records – which bear a lot of similarity to the sharp-edged grooves on this one! The rhythm section is wonderfully tight, and a big part of the success of the set – as they keep things grooving with a slightly sharper edge than some of Longo's other records – thanks to bass from Ron Carter, drums from Mickey Roker, and even a bit of extra congas from Dizzy Gillespie, of all people! Other players include Moody on alto, tenor, and flute – plus Virgil Jones on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone. Genius work from Moody – and a larger session than usual – one that shows his strong talents with an expanded lineup! Moody's working here with players that have a definite Dizzy Gillespie Big Band bent – including trumpeter Dave Burns, trombonist William Shepherd, baritonist Pee Wee Moore, and pianist Jimmy Boyd – but they're working with Moody in a groove that's got equal parts modern alongside the bop, in a way that makes for some complicated arrangements that bristle with electricity. There's almost a bit of Gigi Gryce or Benny Golson in the spirit of the set – and Moody's work on alto is an especially good example of this on the record. Eddie Jefferson makes a great vocal appearance on "Disappointed" – and other tracks include "Little Ricky", "Big Ben", "Show Eyes", "Hard To Get", and "And You Called My Name". LP, Vinyl record album

Sunnyside/Groovin High, 1959. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.98
A much-needed document of a very hip quartet – one that was led by trumpeter Idrees Sulieman, after his initial famous recordings for Prestige – and which also featured pianist Oscar Dennard, an under-recorded genius who left this world at a very early age! The 2CD package presents the group in two different settings – one a series of excellent radio broadcast material made in Tangier, with long tracks that really stretch out – the other a set of live performances done at a party (supposedly at the home of Quincy Jones) – which were technically unreleaseable for decades! The Tangier material is wonderful – a great chance to hear Sulieman spin out those soaring trumpet lines that made him one of the important 50s hardboppers in the wake of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis – and the New York material really shows off Dennard's balance of tone and color, even though the recording quality of that set is a bit dimmed by the limitations of the tape. Other group members include bassist Jamil Nasser – who was supposedly the matchmaker between Oscar and Idrees – and drummer Buster Smith. Titles include "Tangier Blues", "Tour De Force", "Pinky", "Visa", "Stella By Starlight", "Invitation", "Circular Breathing Blues", and "Piano Improvisation". CD

✨✧ Kenny BarronFirst Half Highlights ... CD
32 Jazz/Muse, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nicely overstuffed CD that brings together some excellent tracks from Kenny Barron's early work as a leader for the Muse label! Barron spent a good part of the 60s working with one of Dizzy Gillespie's great groups, and by the time of these recordings, he'd emerged as a strong soul jazz modernist, with a good sense of modal rhythmic lines, and a style that mixed up funky jazz and spiritual post-Coltrane freedom. There's a total of 9 cuts on the CD, many of them long – and titles include "Swamp Demon", "Al Kifha", "Voyage", "Baiana", "Jungle Plum", and "Here's That Rainy Day". CD
