Kurt EllingFlirting With Twilight ... CD
Blue Note, 2001. Used ... $1.99
Think what you may about this groove-patched hipster – we still think he's one of the best jazz vocalists of our time! Kurt Elling's carrying a torch that few other singers could handle – a direct line back to the genius male jazz vocal work of singers like Mark Murphy and Jon Hendricks, armed with the confident emotionality and freely expressive style of the former, and the jazz-based virtuosity and sense of humor of the latter. This recent Blue Note session is very much in Elling's best mode – a bit too sweet in parts, but filled with some great numbers that show him always pushing the envelope, not content to just be a "modern classic" vocalist, as might be said for some of his female contemporaries in the jazz vocal realm. Titles include "Say It", "While You Are Mine", "I'm Thru With Love", "Orange Blossoms In Summertime", "Detour Ahead", "Lil Darlin", and "Easy Living". And sure, we wish there were more original compositions – as on other albums – but Elling really still does a great job with the standards! CD

✨✧ Ferlin HuskyGonna Shake This Shack Tonight ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A nicely focused little collection on the great Ferlin Husky – one that brings together some of his more upbeat tunes from the early generation of rock and roll – although the music is still pretty darn country overall! Or rather, hillbilly – said in the most respectful way of the time – as the cuts often have some bumping basslines that are clearly borrowed a bit from rockabilly, and have that wonderfully full Capitol Records production style of the late 50s – which can illuminate even a casual moment in a tune, and make Ferlin's wit and personality really come through in the vocals! The CD's one of the best collections we've ever seen to focus on this side of Husky's great, and overlooked talent – and titles include "I Feel Better All Over", "Slow Down Brother", "Cross Eyed Gal From The Ozarks", "Detour", "Prize Possession", "Black Sheep", "Eli The Camel", "Excuse Me Stranger", "Wang Dang Doo", "I Will", and "Muki Ruki". Mark MurphyOnce To Every Heart (Japanese version with bonus track) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 2005. Used ... $18.99
Easily the greatest album that vocalist Mark Murphy has recorded in years – and a surprising departure from a lot of his recent work! Murphy did the album in collaboration with German trumpeter Til Bronner – a player we mostly know for his own smoothly soulful, and often-grooving albums. Yet here, Bronner's got both himself and Murphy working in a lush mode that recalls the spirit of 60s sessions arranged by Claus Ogerman or Don Sebesky – Bronner on trumpet with a core jazz group, augmented by larger orchestrations on most tracks – and recorded in a spaciously sublime way that often has Murphy's vocals hanging beautifully in mid-air! There's a breathtaking depth to the album that gets past some of the simple tracks and over-tread territory of other recent Murphy albums – almost as if the album's the "classic" that Mark never got to record back in the day, but which is finally coming out now, 50 years into his career in music! A real contrast to the recent Mark Murphy dancefloor work – such as his vocals with Five Corners Quintet – and featuring the originals "I Know You From Somewhere" and "Our Game" – plus standards "It Never Entered My Mind", "I'm Through With Love", "When I Fall In Love/My One & Only Love", and "Love Is Here To Stay". Japanese pressing features the bonus track "Detour Ahead". CD

✨✧ Dakota StatonTime To Swing (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/DRG, 1959. Used ... $18.99
It's time to swing, but with a classy sound throughout – very much the best mix of modes Dakota Staton brought to her key early years at Capitol Records! Backings are by Sid Feller, and are pretty darn jazzy throughout – more so than some of Sid's other work of the time – a perfectly soulful setting for Staton's amazing vocals – very poised at points, yet never as stiff or stodgy as some of her contemporaries. Dakota's got a deep-toned approach to these tracks that really helps make the album way more than just another recording of familiar standards – and instead, does a great job of taking tunes into rich new territory. There's loads of great reedwork – from Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Budd Johnson – and titles include "If I Should Lose You", "When Lights Are Low", "Willow Weep For Me", "But Not For Me", "The Song Is You", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along". Bonus tracks include "You'd Better Go Now", "You've Changed", "All In My Mind", "Detour Ahead", and "Once There Lived A Fool". CD

This set's one of the best early albums by Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund – one of our favorite singers ever, and one of those rare European lovelies who could sing in English with the best of American vocalists, but who could also pick up on the changes in European jazz at the time, and take her work past the usual standards of vocal jazz. This nicely swinging set features Monica's voice over backings by the Bill McGuffie Quartet, a tight little ensemble that includes a conga, which gives the tracks a nice rolling groove – always a plus, considering how much Monica loves to swing! ✨✧ Lorez AlexandriaDeep Roots (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records ever recorded by vocalist Lorez Alexandria – and a perfect summation of her rich talents as a singer! Backing is by a small Chicago trio that includes John Young on piano, Vernel Fournier on drums, and George Eskridge on bass – but the arrangements of the tracks, and Lorez's unique interpretations drive the tunes into territory that's surprisingly advanced for the 1962 date of the session. You'll recognize most of the tunes – but as the old adage goes, it's not the song, but the singer – and you'll hear Lorez crafting a rich tapestry of sound and emotion from titles like "No Moon At All", "I Was A Fool", "Detour Ahead", "Travlin Light", and "I Want To Talk About You". The album's a gem – right up there with her best work ever – and it's an essential CD reissue that won't be on the market for long! CD

✨✧ Junior CookSomething's Cookin ... CD
Muse, 1982. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice little cooker from Junior – with no pun on the artist or title intended! The album's one of Cook's few sets as a leader, and arguably has an even better focus than most of the rest – thanks to strong production from Cedar Walton, who's also backing Junior for the record with his trio of Billy Higgins on drums and Buster Williams on bass. The groove is nice and fluid – in the best Walton way that combines warmth with a sense of free-soaring energy – and Junior's solos seem a bit more hard-bitten than before, but still with that sense of lyrical warmth that he developed with Horace Silver. Titles include "Chi Chi", "Hindsight", "Heavy Blue", "Illusion Of Grandeur", "Fiesta Espanol", and "Detour Ahead". CD

✨✧ Joe WilliamsJoe Williams Sings Everyday ... CD
Regent/Savoy, Early 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible early work from Joe Williams – harder, rawer, and spookier than any of his more famous sides from the late 50s and 1960s! The album's got a style that's almost R&B in parts – and features Joe effortlessly swinging his way through a set list that includes "It's Raining Again", "Detour Ahead", "Every Day", "Blow Mr Low", "Always On The Blue Side", and the incredible "Safe Sane & Single". The recording quality is great, too – looser and rougher than some of Joe's Verve work, with a nice toothy edge! CD

✨✧ Lorez AlexandriaEarly in the Morning/Deep Roots (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Argo/Phoenix (Spain), 1960/1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two albums by one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time! Early In The Morning is a very hip affair – recorded with the Ramsey Lewis Trio backing her up on one side, and a group led by Frank Foster on another – both playing in a tight soul jazz mode that works perfectly for Lorez's great voice, and which takes her way past the straighter style of the King recordings. Includes a version of Louis Jordan's "Early In The Morning", plus "So Long", "Don't Explain", "Baby Don't You Cry", and "Rocks In My Bed". Deep Roots is like hearing Lorez in a smoky club on the south side of Chicago – a perfect summation of her rich talents as a singer! ✨✧ Milt JacksonSunflower/Goodbye ... CD
CTI/BGO (UK), 1973/1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two CTI label gems from vibist Milt Jackson – back to back on a single CD! Sunflower is proof that Milt Jackson was easily the hippest member of the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one of the few who could really open up into different sounds away from that combo! This sweet 70s set for CTI is totally great – a whole new chapter for Jackson's vibes, and a real re-setting of the soulful modes he'd explored as a leader in the 60s. There's a wonderfully warm and chromatic feel to the set from the start – as Milt's vibes are set in fuller arrangements from Don Sebesky – with added instrumentation from Herbie Hancock on electric piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Phil Bodner on reeds. The highlight of the album is a nice long take on "People Make The World Go Round", but it's all pretty sweet, and other titles include nice versions of "Sunflower" and "What Are You Doing For The Rest Of Your Life" – and Jackson's own "SKJ" and "For Someone I Love". Goodbye is classic work from vibist Milt Jackson – opening up his bag a lot for the 70s, in a way that makes for some wonderfully casual grooves! The album's not as moodily funky as some of Jackson's other CTI records, but it is a nice batch of laidback tunes played with a distinctly soulful edge – handled by a group that features Cedar Walton on piano, Hubert Laws on flute, Ron Carter bass, Steve Gadd drums – and some guest trumpet from Freddie Hubbard on the track "SKJ". Other titles include "Opus De Funk", "Detour Ahead","Goodbye", and "Old Devil Moon". CD

Warmly soulful work from Tyshawn Sorey – a set that marks a different sound from some of his more serious avant material, and which represents this great organic chapter in his career! Even familiar tunes are given some very fresh structures and readings – and titles include "Two Over One", "From Time To Time", "Detour Ahead", "Autumn Leaves", and "REM Blues". CD

Williams' isn't out to make anyone believe she's the next Aretha Franklin, but she's right at home in the upbeat arrangements of these tunes – stepping along with a bright and bouncy feel that more than matches the backings – and the feel of late 80s mainstream soul of the time. ✨✧ Bob Wills & His Texas PlayboysRiding Your Way – The Lost Transcriptions For Tiffany Music 1946/1947 ... CD
Real Gone, 1946/1947. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing, largely unheard collection of recordings by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys! If you're not down with the lore, what's now known as The Tiffany Transcriptions is a series of recordings that the western swing pioneers cut for Tiffany Music, Inc. in the mid-to-late 40s, which were intended only for syndicated radio play at the time – but Tiffany went bust shortly thereafter, and a lot of went unheard for years and years. Wills and his Playboys are really at a peak level here – bridging rural dancehall music with swing jazz in landmark fashion and folksy charm. We've always been huge fans of Playboys singer Tommy Duncan, and he's in top form here, - and the set includes some excellent instrumentals, too. It features 50 tracks on 2CDs – 30 of which have never been reissued, or included on earlier Tiffany Transcriptions anthologies – and 20 of the 50 have never been released before now! Includes "Put Another Chair At The Table", "Travelin' Blues", "Bubbles In My Beer", "Detour", "Sliver Dew On The Blue Grass Tonight", "On The Alamo (Instrumental)", "Ragtime Annie (Instrumental)", "Goodnight Little Sweetheart", "I Wonder If You Feel The Way I Do", "She's Gone", "Still Water Runs The Deepest" and many more. ✨✧ Herb EllisEllis In Wonderland ... CD
Norgran/Verve, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Herb Ellis gets a hearty helping of horns on this set – working with key performances from Jimmy Giuffre, Charlie Mariano, and Harry Edison – all of whom really round out the sound of the record! Herb's guitar is certainly at the forefront of the record, but it's sitting nicely in a lineup that features Harry Edison on trumpet and Jimmy Giuffre on tenor sax, baritone, and clarinet – plus the alto of Charlie Mariano for all of side two of the record – and rhythm by Oscar Peterson on piano and Ray Brown on bass (with whom Ellis was then working in the Peterson Trio), plus Alvin Soller on drums. Ellis' solos dominate most of the record, but they're often set in some slightly tight, freshly modern, and unfortunately uncredited arrangements that have lots of Giuffre touches – warmed up considerably by Edison's trumpet. Titles include "Pogo", "Detour Ahead", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "A Simple Tune", "It Could Happen To You", and "Ellis In Wonderland". CD

A tribute to Billie Holiday – with Johnny Griffin's tenor fronting some larger backing on strings and brass – but hipper than most efforts of this type, thanks to some great arrangements by Melba Liston and Norman Simmons! The record's a good change from some of Johnny's more full-on bop sessions from the same time – and it's nice to hear that his tenor works equally well on mellow tracks and ballads, stretching out with a deep edge and a wonderful tone. Other players include Clark Terry on trumpet, Barry Galbraith on guitar, and Ron Carter on bass – and titles include "God Bless The Child", "Gloomy Sunday", "Travelin' Light", "Left Alone", and "Detour Ahead". Soulful harmonies-laded Jamaican music from The Inturns – who also recorded as The Viceroys and with other monikers from the mid 60s onward – and are really in peak form here in the later 70s! It's beautiful stuff, with rhythmsthat balance a rawer grit with a lighter touch – laid down at Channel One by Sly & Robbie, Ansell Collins, Skully Sims and other prime scene players – but it's really the soul-steeped vocals that carry the vibe here. The Pressure Sounds pedigree for underappreciated archival reggae continues to blow us away! Includes "Send Us", "Consider Yourself", "Detour", "Jah Ho Jah", "Nothing Is Impossible", "Get To Know", "Do We Have To Fight", "Sing A Good Song", and "Jah Ho". CTI, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet 70s electric work from the great vibist Milt Jackson – a record that has him hitting some nicely moody modes, and in a spacious style that's almost a 70s remake of the energy of the Modern Jazz Quartet! Cedar Walton plays piano and Fender Rhodes – and Hubert Laws is in the group on flute – providing these lyrical lines next to Milt's more understated vibes – in a setting that's almost got the same sense of space and timing as some of Laws' records from the period – bigger ideas at play, but never too complicated – really flowing with a subtle sense of sound and tone. Freddie Hubbard plays guest trumpet on the track "SKJ" – the hardest-hitting number on the set – and other titles include "Opus De Funk", "Detour Ahead","Goodbye", and "Old Devil Moon". CD

Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $20.99 34.99
French composer Michel Magne is perhaps best remembered for his soundtrack work of the 60s – but this well-done collection digs farther back, and brings together not only some earlier film score work from the postwar years, but also some extra cool instrumental projects too! Magne's always got a special sort of twist in his music – and he was maybe one of the first French arrangers to incorporate newer ideas in pop and rock to his music, at a level that opened the door for later artists like Jean Claude Vannier or Michel Colombier – and like contemporary Alan Goraguer, he's also got some strong backing in jazz as well! Those many streams of styles really come into play here – in a big 3CD package that features 88 tracks in all – including the soundtracks to the films Le Repos Du Guerrier, Le Pain Vivant, Detournement De Mineures, Le Pique Assiette, and Un Singe En Hiver – plus work from a Musique Pour Films album, the records Musique Tachist, Paris, and A L'Alhambra – and even a rare collaboration with author Francoise Sagan!
