Contours & Dennis EdwardsJust A Little Misunderstanding – Rare & Unissued Motown 1965 to 1968 ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about Motown, here comes a set to open your ears and blow your mind all over again! The set unearths a huge amount of rare work by The Contours – the rollicking group who gave Motown a sweet album and handful of singles in the 60s, but who also recorded a lot of other work that was never issued at the time – including a sweet array of tracks that feature a young Dennis Edwards as their lead vocalist! Edwards is best known for his work in the Temptations – but these tracks predate that time, when Dennis was brought in to give fresh focus to the ailing Contours – and lent his strong lead vocals to their massively grooving sound. The package features a whopping 26 tracks – 14 issued here for the first time ever, and a lot more pulled from only collections of rare Motown releases – and titles include "Determination", "I'll Turn To Stone", "I Like Everything About You", "Can't Do Without Your Love", "Come See About Me", "I Grow Deeper In Love Every Day", "Our Last Rendezvous", "Which Way To My Baby", "Need Your Lovin", "What's So Good About Goodbye", "Sunny", and "I'm Here Now That You Need Me". Gordy, 1985. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A second solo set from Temptation Dennis Edwards – a great set of mellow modern soul, with a very 80s approach to the production and arrangements. There's a bit of 80s production in the mix – handled by Dennis Lambert in a strong way that never overcomes the vocals – and titles include "Try A Little Tenderness", "State Of Limbo", "No Such Thing", "Why Do People Fall In Love" and "Coolin Out". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch, light wear, and a small trace of a price sticker.)

✨✧ TemptationsReunion ... CD
Gordy (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An all-star effort from The Temptations – and a well-titled set that has the group brimming over with classic vocal talent! The group's expanded to a seven-piece outfit for the album – with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin back in the fold, singing alongside Dennis Edwards, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and the rest of the group! Motown also culled together some top-shelf production talent for the set too – including Berry Gordy, Rick James, Barrett Strong, and Smokey Robinson – all of whom produce numbers for the record. Some of the tracks are in an 80s groove modes, and others are mellower ballads that offer plenty of space for vocal interplay – and titles include "I've Never Been To Me", "Backstage", "More On The Inside", "Standing On The Top", "Lock It In The Pocket", and "You Better Beware". CD
(Part of the Motown Did It First Series!)

✨✧ VariousCellarful Of Motown Vol 3 – The Sound Of Young America ... CD
Motown/Universal (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive third helping of rare Motown soul – filled with just as many obscure moments and unreleased gems as the previous two volumes! Even if you're a Motown completist enough to buy those giant Complete Singles volumes, you'll still find plenty here to love – because this UK-only series really digs deep into the Motown vaults, and proves that there's a tremendous amount of great music that never saw the light of day back in the 60s! The overall style is strongly in the Northern Soul mode – no surprise, given the British origin of the set – but even with that tight focus, the range of music here is really wonderful, and includes a great amount of work by lesser stars in the Motown galaxy. All tracks are presented with full notes on the original recording date – and the 2CD package features a whopping 43 tracks that include "You're Walking Out With My Heart" by Brenda Holloway, "This Love Will Never Die" by The Miracles, "At The Go Go" by Stevie Wonder, "I'm In Love Again" by Shorty Long, "Easier Said Than Done" by Dennis Edwards, "Never Give You Up" by Blinky & Edwin Starr, "A Chance With You" by Marvin Gaye, "Watch Your Step" by Mike Varo, "Come Back My Love" by The Temptations, "Too Young Too Long" by Carolyn Crawford, "SOS Girl In Distress" by Marv Johnson, "Thief Of Love" by Oma Page, "Loving You" by Fantastic Four, "Just Too Much" by The Monitors, "Little Girls Grow Up" by The Marvelettes, "Don't Stop Loving Me" by Ivy Jo, "Soldier Of Love" by The Four Tops, "I'm Here Now That You Need Me" by JJ Barnes, "Beware Of A Stranger" by Rita Wright, "Cindy" by Bobby Taylor, and "Too Late I Learned" by The Spinners. ✨✧ Les McCann & Gerald WilsonMcCann/Wilson ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
2 of the greatest artists on Pacific Jazz meet head to head in the studio – as the Les McCann trio gets backed up by the Gerald Wilson Orchestra! Given the hipness of Wilson's sound, and the fact that his group features solo work by Teddy Edwards and Dennis Budimir, the overall approach to the record is really wonderful – pushing McCann way past his usual bag, and fleshing out the core grooves of the trio very very nicely! Tracks include "Maleah", "Love Of Living To Do", "Kathleen's Theme", "Gus Gus", "Restin In Jail", and "Bailor The Wailor". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Gerald WilsonFeelin Kinda Blues ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Ahhh . . . Gerald Wilson at the height of his powers – recording here in a mode that could never miss! The group's a jazz orchestra, but it's filled with some of the hippest cats on the west coast in the 60s – soulful soloists who include Anthony Ortega on flute and alto, Curtis Amy on soprano sax, Phil Moore on piano, Teddy Edwards on tenor, Victor Feldman on vibes, and Dennis Budimir on guitar – all grooving in tight formation that still allow plenty of space for solos on each tune – even when the group is vamping, romping, and hitting an all-out swinging 60s soul jazz groove! Includes versions of "Freddy Freeloader", "Watermelon Man", "Yeh Yeh", and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" – and other titles include "Well Son Shuffle", "Do Anything You Wanna", "When I'm Feeling Kinda Blue", and "One On The House".
