✨✧ David HazeltineBlues For Gerry ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pianist David Hazeltine doing just what he does best – serving up a nicely punctuated trio performance, in the company of two great rhythm players – Joe Farnsworth on drums, and Peter Washington on bass! The album's a date that illustrates just why Hazeltine's been at the top of his game for many years – able to soulfully swing with plenty of left hand energy, yet also working with a warmly lyrical quality that really comes through in the album's balance of tunes – a number of originals by David, plus tracks by Cedar Walton, Johnny Mercer, and Duke Pearson! The last of these is one of our all-time favorites – and Hazeltine serves up a great reading of "You Know I Care" – next to other tunes that include "Firm Roots", "Here Again", "Blues For Gerry", "Minor Disturbance", and "Here We Go". Eric AlexanderNew Beginning – Alto Saxophone With Strings ... CD
High Note, 2023. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
A definite new beginning for reedman Eric Alexander – a set that has him turning to alto sax, instead of his very familiar tenor – and also working with some larger string backings on most of the set – something we're not sure Alexander has ever done before! The vibe is great, and Eric brings a depth to the alto that really reflects his decades on the tenor – a style that's very different than a Charlie Parker or Sonny Stitt "with strings" section from years back – in part because the arrangements by Bill Dobbins have a very fresh feel too. There's a familiar combo at the core – David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and titles include "All My Tomorrows", "Too Late Now", "Blues For Diane", "Maybe September", "Anita", and "To Love & Be Loved". Eric AlexanderTemple Of Olympic Zeus ... CD
High Note, 2007. Used ... $6.99
A cheesy cover, but a rock-solid set of work from the mighty Eric Alexander – who seems to be stretching out even more here than before! Alexander's always been a hell of a straight ahead talent on the tenor, but here he's almost hitting a few more modern modes at times – not "out" in his soloing, but a bit more free thinking in the overall construction and execution of the tunes – willing to change things up a bit in the rhythms, and give the record even more freshness than we might have expected. Alexander's easily one of the greatest living talents in jazz recording today – and we're already huge fans of his work – but he's won us over even more with this set, and a few of the chances he takes on some of the tunes. The group's a well-matched batch of regulars – including Jim Rotondi on trumpet, David Hazeltine on piano, Nat Reeves on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and titles include "The Temple Of Olympic Zeus", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Lucas Too", "Blues For David", "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life", "I'll Keep Loving You", and "Dave's System". ✨✧ One For All with George ColemanBig George ... LP
Smoke Sessions, 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Legendary tenorist George Coleman adds his voice to the One For All combo on a number of tracks here – making the already-great combo even better! For years, One For All has always boasted tremendous tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – but more recently, Alexander has also begun to play alto work – which he does here on a few tracks that then allow Coleman to step up strongly – blowing with that soulful depth that he's been bringing to recording sessions from the 60s onwards, maybe even better here with the passage of years! And the rest of the all-star lineup is equally great – Jim Rotondi on trumpet, Steve Davis on trombone, David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums. Coleman blows on the titles "Oscar Winner", "This I Dig Of You", and "My Foolish Heart" – and other tracks include "Chainsaw", "In The Lead", and "Edgerly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marlena ShawElemental Soul ... CD
Concord, 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
A recent set by Marlena Shaw – still going strong in her fourth decade as a singer! The album's got a slightly stiffer feel than some of Shaw's best-known recordings of the 60s or 70s – but it's still quite nice overall, with jazz-tinged backings that are often cut with a bit of added keyboards to charge things up. The core group features David Hazeltine on piano, plus some guest tenor from Stanley Turrentine on a few tracks. There's a slightly bluesy quality to a few numbers, but the focus is still mostly jazzy soul overall – and tracks include "Your Mind Is On Vacation", "Where Do You Start", "Why Oh Why", "Brothers", "Once Again We've Begun To Love", "I'm Alone Again", and "Paint Your Pretty Picture". ✨✧ Xaver HellmeierX-Man In New York ... CD
Cellar Live, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from jazz drummer Xaver Hellmeier – recorded in New York and produced by drummer Joe Farnsworth – a mentor of the younger player, and maybe the force for bringing together the top-shelf group on the date – a wonderful lineup that features Eric Alexander on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Washington on bass, and David Hazeltine on piano! The album's got all the snap, crackle, and pop that you'd expect from such a group – sharp, and very much on the money – the sort of record you'd expect from any of the other artists, or Farnsworth too, which is high praise for Hellmeier's work here as a leader! The tracks include some well-chosen numbers – including a great remake of "Book's Bossa", plus "Midnight Waltz", "Tune Up", and "Advance Notice" – plus Hellmeier's originals "Blues For JF" and "Night In Verona". ✨✧ One For All (Eric Alexander, Jim Rotondi, et al)Killer Joe ... CD
Venus (Japan), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from a great lineup – an assortment of players who've made quite a name recording sets like this one for the Japanese market! Tenorist Eric Alexander is very firmly in place on the set – giving it the same gentle soul and well-crafted sound as his own great albums – and other players include Jim Rotondi on trumpet, David Hazeltine on piano, Joe Farnsworth on drums, and Steve Davis on trombone. The horns in the frontline are beautifully poised throughout – tightly crackling on the head arrangements, then breaking out in soulful solos – in a way that reminds us a lot of some of the legendary work by the Benny Golson-Art Farmer Jazztet. It's no surprise that the group covers the Jazztet standard "Killer Joe" – and the album also features great versions of Duke Pearson's "You Know I Care" and Ahmad Jamal's "Night Mist Blues" – plus originals "Island" and "Hot Sake". ✨✧ Jim RotondiFour Of A Kind ... CD
Posi-Tone, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Four of a kind, and a very well-matched quartet – all players who know each other well, and really soar together in a setting like this! The album's got the solid punch we love in Rotondi's best work – that well-crafted frontline of trumpet and flugelhorn – sometimes muted, sometimes full blown – with wickedly sharp rhythms from David Hazeltine on piano and Fender Rhodes, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums! Hazeltine's Rhodes is especially nice – and the subtle snap of Farnworth keeps things swinging, even at gentler moments – in a way that really pushes Jim forward nicely. Titles include "Ruth", "Falset", "Minor Adjustment", "I See You Brother", "Blues For BC", and "Manteca". CD

Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jim Rotondi blows with that great round sound we love so much in his horn – a bold, confident tone that only seems to get better with age, especially in the company of a group like this! The album features a core rhythm section that Jim's plenty comfortable with – David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and is rounded out to a sextet with the presence of Ralph Bowen on tenor and Mike DiRubbo on alto, both tight horn players whose formations with Rotondi really help to give the album a strong, solid form! Titles include "Progress", "Julie Ann", "The Coat", "For Cedar", "The Look Of Love", "DH", and "Too Late Now". CD
