Teddi King with Dave McKennaThis Is New – Teddi King Sings Ira Gershwin ... LP
Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $2.99
A very laidback little album from Teddi King – a set that mostly features Teddi singing with only piano accompaniment from Dave McKenna, and which also features a few solo tracks by Dave as well! Teddi's voice has changed a bit since the 50s – but in a good way, with a bit more human qualities amidst the trademark trills – especially in the company of McKenna's thoughtfully crafted piano lines. The titles are all Gershwin tunes, taken at a very relaxed pace – and tracks include "Soon", "Long Ago & Far Away", "Here's What I'm Here For", "Isn't It A Pity", "My Ship", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "But Not For Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout hole and light wear.)

Dave McKennaDave McKenna Quartet with Zoot Sims (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Chiaroscuro, 1974. Used ... $9.99
A great date from pianist Dave McKenna – an artist who's frequently caught in a trio set or smaller – which makes this quartet session with Zoot Sims a mighty nice treat! McKenna's got a really timeless approach to piano – one that often spans decades of jazz expression, especially the earlier ones – and that seems to bring out a nice sound here in Sims' horns – which include both tenor and soprano sax for the session, the latter of which is especially sweet. Tracks are relatively short, but have a warm, personal feel – and the group also features Major Holley on bass and Ray Mosca on drums. Titles include "One Good Turn", "Dave's Tune", "Deed I Do", "Limehouse Blues", "Linger Awhile", and "Wherever There's Love". CD features some bonus alternate takes, too! CD

✨✧ Dave McKenna & Hal OvertonDual Piano Jazz ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
A unique dual piano session from Dave McKenna and Hal Overton – and one that's nicely free of any sense of gimmick or cliche! The pair work together in a really loose, personal style – one that has the upfront push of a jazz trio date, but which also allows each musician room to express themselves differently – as you'd expect, given their slightly different approaches. Rhythm is from Earl May on bass and Jerry Segal on drums – and titles include "Monk's Mood", "Keeping Out Of Mischief", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Ruby My Dear", and a great reading of "Hi Fly". CD

✨✧ Ruby BraffRuby Braff With Dave McKenna – Complete Original Quartet/Quintet Sessions (Ruby Braff Featuring Dave McKenna/Braff/Easy Now) ... CD
ABC/Gambit (Spain), 1955/1956/1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Ruby Braff and pianist Dave McKenna – a tremendous combination that makes for some very swinging music! The CD features the full track list from the excellent (and obscure) ABC album recorded by the pair in 1956 – a great date that draws from Braff's more traditional approach to jazz trumpet, but which also inflects it with a good dose of McKenna's well-stated and sometimes more modern lines on piano. Rhythm is by Sam Herman on guitar, Al Lucas on bass, and Buzzy Drootin on drums – and although the style is trad, there's also a lean and hoke-free quality to the work that's a lot more appealing than we expected. Titles include "Why Was I Born", "Blue Prelude", "Dancing In The Dark", "Louisiana", "It's Wonderful", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "Almost Like Being In Love". CD also features 9 more bonus tracks too – 7 from the album Braff, 1 from the album Easy Now, and 1 with Benny Goodman. All tracks feature Braff and McKenna – and titles include "As Long As I Live", "Stardust", "I'm Shooting High", "Soft Lights & Sweet Music", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "If I Had You". ✨✧ Teddy CharlesOn Campus – Ivy League Jazz Concert ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
A great Bethlehem Records date from vibes man Teddy Charles – stepping out here in a set that's one of his most openly swinging of the time! The record still has some of the modern currents of Teddy's other work, but also makes great use of Zoot Sims on tenor – really pushing him out front for some bold solos on most numbers – in a great group that also includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Sam Most on flute, and Dave McKenna on piano. There's a bit of audience noise at times, but we can't tell for sure if this is an actual live album – given the clarity of the performances throughout. Titles include "Nigerian Walk", "Rifftide", "Yesterdays", "That Old Black Magic", and "Yale Blue". CD

Zoot SimsDown Home (70s pressing) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1960. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A really great little set from Zoot Sims – earthy, and almost a bit more fragile than much of his other work! There's a real "down home" feel to the whole record – as Zoot blows comfortably and easily in a quartet with Dave McKenna on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums – making a rare non-Mingus appearance for the set! Zoot's horn has a bit more dirt in the tone than on some of his "cleaner" sessions – a style that we like a lot, and which really fits the feeling of the set. Titles include "Doggin' Around", "Avalon", "Jive At Five", "I've Heard That Blues", and "Goodnite Sweetheart". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ringwear, edge wear, and is bent a bit at the edges.)
