Charles BradleyChanges (with download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Titles include "Ain't It A Sin", "Nobody But You", "Good To Be Back Home", "Things We Do For Love", "Crazy Love", and "Slow Love" – plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Dunham/Daptone, 2011. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
Gritty, powerful raw soul from Charles Bradley – the full length debut from the 62-year-old Brooklyn singer – backed perfectly by The Menahan Street Band! It's incredible, a record that sounds just as rawly emotional and impeccably soulful in 2011 as it would have in 1971 – much like the work Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, there's no mistaking this for anything but the real deal. Rough hewn in beautifully so – with perfect, funky backing by team Menahan. A timeless treasure! Titles include "In You (I Found A Love)", "I Believe In Your Love", "The Telephone Song", "Golden Rule", "How Long", "Trouble In The Land", "Since Our Last Goodbye", "Heartaches And Pain", "The World" and more. Charles BradleyVictim Of Love (with bonus download) ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". Budos BandBudos Band 2 ... LP
Daptone, 2007. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos". LP, Vinyl record album

Budos BandBudos Band III (includes bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). Budos BandBurnt Offering ... LP
Daptone, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 17.98
Some of the deepest, heaviest work we've ever heard from the Budos Band – as you might guess from the album's dark title and cover! There's a bit of a heavy metal look to the package, but the sounds within are still the righteous funk we've always loved from Budos – yet are also inflected with a very slight bit of trippy elements this time around – a touch of fuzz on the guitar, or cosmic echoes on the keyboards – which really balance out strongly with the group's bold horns and razor-sharp drums! The slight changes make for a more sinister sound than before, and show that these guys continue to be one of the most forward-thinking funk bands around – never content to just rest on the laurels of their great musicianship, but always leaping ahead with new ideas. Titles include "Shattered Winds", "Black Hills", "Magus Mountain", "Into The Fog", "The Sticks", "Burnt Offering", and "Turn & Burn". LP, Vinyl record album

Daptone, 2014. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Tremendous work from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – a set that took a bit longer to hit the racks than expected, but which really shows a richness that more than makes up for the delay! Sharon's a singer who's always been great – but she steps out strongly here with a sense of maturity that seems to take her vocals even farther than before – and The Dap Kings are more than ready to match her energy with some funky work of their own! Jones has gone through a lot in recent years – both with the band and in her own personal life – and the record's a proud summation of life's challenges and triumphs, served up in the instant-classic style that has made Sharon one of the greatest living soul singers of the past few decades. Bosco Mann knocked things out of the park with his raw production – and also wrote a good number of tracks on the set too – and titles include "Making Up & Breaking Up", "Long Time Wrong Time", "People Don't Get What They Deserve", "Retreat", "Stranger To My Happiness", and "Now I See". Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsSoul Time ... LP
Daptone, 2011. New Copy ... $14.99
Damn damn damn – maybe the funkiest album ever from Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings! The group have always been great, but there's something here that goes even farther than usual – an especially funky snap on the drums at the bottom, even on more laidback tunes – and a stone classic approach to funky soul, one that's definitely been honed to a "T" through their important work on the road during the previous few years! And Sharon Jones is great – with vocals that are way deeper and much longer-lasting than any rehab outpatient wannabe – sending home these tunes with a quality that may well pass most of her classic female soul inspirations from back in the day. And even though the set brings together some older singles and other odd bits, it's got a rock-solid punch that makes it a very unified album throughout! Titles include "Settling In", "I'm Not Gonna Cry", "When I Come Home", "Ain't No Chimneys In The Projects", "New Shoes", "Without A Trace", and "Inspiration Information". LP, Vinyl record album

Daptone, 2007. New Copy ... $13.99
They might be borrowing her band, but they sure can't dampen her soul – because Sharon Jones is strongly back in action, and sounding funkier and more deeply soulful than ever! Given that Sharon wasn't singing back in the 60s, it's hard to think we'd be calling her the real deal – but in a world of crossover classic-copping soul singers, or slightly rewarmed older acts, Jones is a true treat through and through – the kind of soul singer whose work still recalls the best era of the funky 45 underground! The mighty Dap-Kings are in full force here – snapping along the groove with a range of classic soul influences – styles borrowed from Memphis, Miami, Muscle Shoals, and more – all sifted down to some of the tightest grooves any singer ever had the chance of working with! The production is amazing – as sharp-edged as the music – and handled by Bosco Mann with a sound that's as faithful to the roots as the cover might imply. Titles include "100 Days 100 Nights", "Tell Me", "Be Easy", "Nobody's Baby", "When The Other Foot Drops Uncle", "Something's Changed", "Keep On Looking", "Answer Me", and "Humble Me". Sharon Jones & The Dap-KingsI Learned The Hard Way ... LP
Daptone, 2010. Very Good ... $9.99
The fourth album from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – solidifying what we learned pretty early on from the indomitable soul spirit that is Sharon and her impeccable combo the Dap-Kings – it's that this is not some retro soul revival novelty act, what they are is the greatest active embodiment of a true soul sound that will never go away! We've always loved that Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings recognize the studio and the stage as different worlds. On stage, Sharon is the possibly the most energetic, charismatic presence you'll ever see and the band brings heft and heat. In the studio, they stretch out and diversify wonderfully, bringing both raw, unpolished funky soul realness to some more stripped down numbers and a full on Stax or Hi level heaviness to the bigger ones. The songs are better and more memorable than ever on this record – with "The Game Gets Old" and "I Learned The Hard Way" (an astoundingly strong one/two punch for the opening minutes) plus "Better Things", "Give It Back", "Money". "The Reason", "Window Shopping", "I'll Still Be True", "Without A Heart", "If You Call" and "Mama Don't Like My Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Daptone, 2004. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-anticipated second album from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings is a stunner – undoubtedly stronger than the group's fantastic debut – and a record that not only transcends the late model funk revival genre, but stands on footing as solid as the best hard funky soul of the late 60s and early 70s! If you're expecting a rehash of the heavy funk jams that burned on the Dap Dippin' album you won't be disappointed, but get ready for a deep, natural (hence the title) soulfulness that not only caught us off guard, but really forms the big, hard-beating heart of the album. The frothing, frenetic funk is as tight as ever, and in spots just as furious, but the attention to songcraft this time out is just as searing and indelible. The eight piece Dap Kings continue to be the best band in the land – with El Michels on baritone sax, Neal Sugarman on tenor, Homer Steinweiss on drums, not-so-secret weapon Bosco Mann on bass, vibes and piano. Guest appearances include fellow Daptone powerhouse vocalist Lee Fields on the the duet "Stranded In Your Love", and strings courtesy of the Bushwick Philharmonic, but make no mistake, this is the band's album. Amazing stuff from in indispensable group – an album that'll keep spinning in our circles for as many years as the great albums by the gritty soul forefathers do! Tracks include "How Do I Let A Good Man Down?", "Natural Born Lover", "My Man Is A Mean Man", a soulful reading of Woodie Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land", "Your Thing Is A Drag", "Fish In A Dish" and "All Over Again". Daptone/Voodoo Funk, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy LP & 7 Inch ... Out Of Stock
Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". The Frightnrs have plenty more to say here – and they say it in a really sharp-edged approximation of older rocksteady modes! The group are contemporary, but like the best acts on Daptone, they've got an instantly classic feel – thanks to instrumentation and production that take us right back to late 60s Kingston, but with some of the sharper funky currents we've come to expect from the label! And while The Frightnrs may pitch themselves as an old school reggae act, they're also one that have a heavy dose of soul – almost a late night New Jersey current to their music at times – as if the All Platinum/Stang label put out their own version of Jamaican soul. Partly a soundtrack to the film on the life and music of the mighty Sharon Jones – partly a collection of some of her best tracks, with a bonus cut that's previously unreleased! The music here documents the amazing run of modern funk we've heard from Ms Jones & The Dap-Kings – a partnership that's given the 21st Century some incredible soul records – of the sort to rival 60s classics from labels like Stax or Atlantic Records! Yet the music here is also something else all its own – the story of struggle, survival, and rebirth – as Jones began her career with a hell of a strong sound, and has emerged with an even more powerful voice than ever – as you'll hear on cuts that include the never-issued "I'm Still Here" – plus "Slow Down Love", "I Learned The Hard Way", "Mama Don't Like My Man", "Let Them Knock", "Longer & Stronger", "If You Call", "People Don't Get What They Deserve", "Tell Me", "Retreat", "Humble Me", and "I'll Still Be True". A really great second album from Ikebe Shakedown – easily the group's best work so far, and a real cut above the usual Afro-styled groove! These guys have a great way of laying back in their rhythms – still keeping things funky, but nicely paced too – so that there's a fresh feel to the way they layer together their horns and percussion, and let the keyboards nicely simmer away in the groove! The style's a bit like what El Michels did to more conventional funk groups – with the same sort of super-dope results – and the whole thing was recorded perfectly at the Daptone Studios, with a massively old school sort of vibe. Desco, 1998. Very Good+ ... $34.99
An early example of the deep funk explosion in the 90s – the kind of work that laid the ground for the Soul Fire and Daptone labels to come! The set's performed by a tight bunch of modern funkateers who are transforming the field with hardcore, old school, purist funk grooves. The Other Side previously released a single or two on the label, and they've made a name for themselves by specializing hard funky stripped-down JB's sound grooves. Lots of hard vamping, with good instrumental solos, and tight rhythmic guitar and bass playing. Mostly instrumental, with some chanting and shouting over the top of things. Pressed on heavy vinyl, and with the cuts "Snake Bite", "The Butcher", "Cornbread", "Diggin' Up The Yard", and "Spying On the Devil". LP, Vinyl record album

Marva WhitneyLive & Lowdown At The Apollo ... LP
King, 1970. Very Good+ (reissue)... $14.99
Amazing female funk! Years after James Brown first rocked the Apollo Theater with his own live recordings, he returned to the Harlem showplace with the sock-soul diva Marva Whitney – one of his greatest singers ever! This album's a monster all the way through – hard and heavy funk, of the type that's been the blueprint for countless singers to come, especially most of those in the Desco/Daptone/Soul Fire mode. Backing is by the JBs, James produced, and the music is fantastically funky – filled with great groovers like "Things Got to Get Better", "You Got to Have a Job", "Talk With JB", and "Respect". VariousSoul Slabs Vol 1 (red colored vinyl – with download) (2017 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Colemine, 2010s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A very well-titled set – given that the Colemine Records label has given us some mighty soulful slabs of wax in recent years! Although a small label, in the hinterland of Ohio, Colemine is fast rising to be one of the coolest funk labels in the world – right up there on a par with older classics like Desco and Soul Fire, and almost able to challenge the supremacy of the Daptone sound! Yet Colemine is also a bit more wide-ranging than some of those other labels, too – as you'll hear in the rich array of sounds within – all pulled from previous funky 45s on the label, many of which are out of print – and presented here in a fantastic full length set. Titles include "Don't Get Caught" by The Droptones, "Yo Todo T Yo" by The Rugged Nuggets, "Street Sweeper" by The Grease Traps, "Like Yesterday" by The Monophonics, "Pacified" by Soul Scratch, "Remember When" by Leroi Conroy, "Jesse's Jing" by In Motion Collective, "Next To You" by Gene Washington & The Ironsides, and "Suction" by On The Spot Trio. ✨✧ VariousHasabe – Killer Ethiopian R&B From The Golden Age Of Ethiopian Music ... LP
Mississippi, Late 60s-Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very unique version of funk – wonderful sounds cut during the golden years of Ethiopian music in the late 60s and early 70s – presented here in a sweet vinyl-only sampler that brings together the best bits from the long-running Ethiopiques CD series! The collection is filled with mindblowing tracks – the sort of revolutionary funk numbers that have had the Ethiopian scene continuing to influence the world of funk over the past few decades – with styles that have been picked up by artists on Daptone, Truth & Soul, and other labels – but never done so well as on these originals. Many cuts have an exotic, other-worldly sort of vibe – but also borrow soul and jazz touches from American music as well – and the collection features ten tracks that include "Astawesalehu" and "Adrashash Tefabegn" by Lemma Demissew, "Yehagere Sheta" by Tlahoun Gessesse, "Mela Mela" by Sefu Yohannes, "Aynotche Terabu" by Mahmoud Ahmed, "Ayalqem Tedenqo" by Alemayehy Eshete, and "Tessaassategn Eko" by Bahta Gebre-Heywet. ✨✧ Andra DayCheers To The Fall ... LP
Warner, 2015. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant debut for singer Andra Day! Ms. Day, as you're surely aware if you've read any of her press, is profoundly influenced by classic soul, but believe us, she's got style, confidence and a voice – wow, that voice – that truly transcends retro revivalism. This is truly one of the finer major label soul/ R&B records we've heard in a while! Andra has a way of owning the material without over-singing, and paying homage to divas past without carbon copying soul history – working with producers and studio players – from Raphael Saadiq to members of the Daptone crew – all of whom are well-suited to accompany her. We snoozed on Andra Day for months...our bad! She's the real deal. Titles include "Forever Mine", "Only Love", "Gold", "Not Today", "Mistakes", "Rearview", "Red Flags", "Honey Or Fire", "Gin & Juice (Let Go My Hand)", "Rise Up", "City Burns" and "Cheers To The Fall". ✨✧ VariousKeb Darge – Best Of Legendary Deep Funk ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A legendary series gets a great return here – in a special package that brings together all the best cuts from the now-classic Keb Darge Deep Funk compilations! Years before people were digging Daptone, or really giving funky 45s their full due, London DJ Keb Darge created a series of compilations and coined the term "deep funk" – and turned on a whole generation of listeners with his sharp ear for an unusual groove! Plenty of folks had collected soul singles before, but Keb was one of the first to focus exclusively on funk – especially the kind of 45-only, small label releases that barely got any play upon initial release – and which had only become the parlance of a handful of collectors lucky to land a copy. Things really changed when Keb set loose the original series – which not only opened up the music to countless new listeners, but also inspired a wave of new groups, new labels, and new reissues – making for a very different landscape than if he'd never put his collections together. This double-length set does a deep dive back to that series, to bring back some of the best cuts in a razor-sharp format – 21 titles that include "tell Me" by Rickey Calloway, "Love Call" by Ramsey & Company, "Modernization" by Sons Of The Kingdom, "Can We Rap" by Carleen & The Groovers, "Silly Savage" by The Golden Toadstools, "The World" by Sandi & The Matues, "It Ain't Fair But It's Funk (re-edit)" by The Fabulous Originals, "Simple Song" by Zebra, "Cross Bronx Expressway" by Cross Bronx Expressway, "Funk Soul Brother (re-edit)" by Soul Drifter, "Spread Love" by Harris & Orr, "You Got Me Hung Up" by King Tutt, "Free Your Mind" by Record Player, "Psycho" by The Fabulous Mark III, "I Can Deal With That" by Dee Edwards, "Natural" by Leon Gardner, "Contradiction" by Total Experience, "Blueberry Hill" by Joe Washington, "Going Down For The Last Time" by Ronnie Keaton, and "I Wanna Be Loved By You (Kenny Dope re-edit)" by Family Of Eve.
