The set features a few special tracks for the collection, plus some numbers from old Daptone 45s – making a full length debut here – plus lots more of the classic-styled cuts that make the label so great – some of the first and best of the new wave of funk that first broke on these shores at the end of the 90s – still handled by Daptone better than most! AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A second fantastic set from this Mississippi gospel trio – and one that mixes their heavenly vocals with a bit of Daptone Records funk! The set's produced by Bosco Mann, who also plays bass in the quartet that backs up the singers – and the groove is raw and gritty, with a vibe that almost makes you feel like you stumbled upon some unreleased master tapes from the 70s in the vaults of Excello Records! There's few folks we could ever trust to get a gospel funk record this right – and the use of the vocals is tremendous along with the grooves – really stepping out on cuts that include "Move Upstairs", "Out Of The Wilderness", "99 & A Half Won't Do", "I Can't Thank Him Enough", "He's Mine", and "So Good To Me". Daptone, 2014. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Tremendous work from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – a set that took a bit longer to hit the racks than expected, but which really shows a richness that more than makes up for the delay! Sharon's a singer who's always been great – but she steps out strongly here with a sense of maturity that seems to take her vocals even farther than before – and The Dap Kings are more than ready to match her energy with some funky work of their own! Jones has gone through a lot in recent years – both with the band and in her own personal life – and the record's a proud summation of life's challenges and triumphs, served up in the instant-classic style that has made Sharon one of the greatest living soul singers of the past few decades. Bosco Mann knocked things out of the park with his raw production – and also wrote a good number of tracks on the set too – and titles include "Making Up & Breaking Up", "Long Time Wrong Time", "People Don't Get What They Deserve", "Retreat", "Stranger To My Happiness", and "Now I See". Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsSoul Time ... LP
Daptone, 2011. New Copy ... $14.99
Damn damn damn – maybe the funkiest album ever from Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings! The group have always been great, but there's something here that goes even farther than usual – an especially funky snap on the drums at the bottom, even on more laidback tunes – and a stone classic approach to funky soul, one that's definitely been honed to a "T" through their important work on the road during the previous few years! And Sharon Jones is great – with vocals that are way deeper and much longer-lasting than any rehab outpatient wannabe – sending home these tunes with a quality that may well pass most of her classic female soul inspirations from back in the day. And even though the set brings together some older singles and other odd bits, it's got a rock-solid punch that makes it a very unified album throughout! Titles include "Settling In", "I'm Not Gonna Cry", "When I Come Home", "Ain't No Chimneys In The Projects", "New Shoes", "Without A Trace", and "Inspiration Information". LP, Vinyl record album

Daptone, 1990s/Early 2000s. New Copy 2 LP Gatefold ... $19.99 23.99
Incredible funk from The Poets Of Rhythm – one of the hardest and heaviest groups in the deep funk underground – and one of the first, too – given that most of the work here pre-dates efforts by all the rest of the Daptone and Soul Fire generation! Long before there was even a Desco Records, these guys started out making sounds based on the funky 45 underground of the late 60s and early 70s – perfect funk tracks, from performance to production – without any of the slicker or schlocky modes that their few contemporaries would always step into. Instead, these guys were so sharp that they were able to actually pass off a lot of their early cuts as "vintage" singles – fooling folks into thinking they'd discovered some lost rare funk act, then winning them over even more when they found out that the group was current – and that they had this really unique, magical approach. Drums are super-hard, vocals are nice and raw, and the instrumentation is so sharply funky, you might accidentally cut your fingertips when flipping the record over! This sweet collection brings together 18 singles by the group, plus a previously unissued cut too – all with some great notes as well. Titles include "50 Yards Of Soul", "Funky Train", "South Carolina", "Augusta, GA", "More Mess On My Thing", "Choking On A Piece Of Meat (part 2)", "Ham Gallery", "Summerdays", "Path Of Life", and "Discern/Define". ✨✧ Bob & GeneIf This World Were Mine (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Modo/Daptone, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A previously-unreleased sweet soul treasure – now finally getting its due! Bob & Gene were an obscure duo from Buffalo at the end of the 60s – recording briefly together under the guidance of Bob's father, who recorded the young pair in his home studio with the help of some great funk and soul musicians from the local scene – with a sound that's fresh, fragile, and deeply personal. Many numbers have a slow, sad quality that's right up there with some of the best harmony soul of the time – a wispy late nite kind of sound that's captured perfectly here, with just the right balance of roughness and sweet. Other numbers get a bit more upbeat, and almost a bit funky – showing the pair to have a bit more punch than some of their contemporaries, and a sometimes sunny sound that really sparkles amidst the darkness. Most of the work here was recorded in the late 60s, but never released – making this the first-ever album by the group. And as a bonus note of trivia, Bob here is none other than Bobby Nunn – who went onto record under his own name, and did a lot of great work in the LA scene of the 70s! Titles include "Gotta Find A Way", "Your Name", "It Won't Go", "I Can Be Cool", "Sailboat", "Interlude", "Which Love", "Don't Leave Me Girl", "You Gave Me Love", and a great cover of "If This World Were Mine". Includes the bonus tracks "It's Not What You Know" and "I Really Love You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Budos BandBudos Band ... LP
Daptone, 2005. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Budos BandBurnt Offering ... LP
Daptone, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the deepest, heaviest work we've ever heard from the Budos Band – as you might guess from the album's dark title and cover! There's a bit of a heavy metal look to the package, but the sounds within are still the righteous funk we've always loved from Budos – yet are also inflected with a very slight bit of trippy elements this time around – a touch of fuzz on the guitar, or cosmic echoes on the keyboards – which really balance out strongly with the group's bold horns and razor-sharp drums! The slight changes make for a more sinister sound than before, and show that these guys continue to be one of the most forward-thinking funk bands around – never content to just rest on the laurels of their great musicianship, but always leaping ahead with new ideas. Titles include "Shattered Winds", "Black Hills", "Magus Mountain", "Into The Fog", "The Sticks", "Burnt Offering", and "Turn & Burn". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsNaturally ... LP
Daptone, 2004. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-anticipated second album from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings is a stunner – undoubtedly stronger than the group's fantastic debut – and a record that not only transcends the late model funk revival genre, but stands on footing as solid as the best hard funky soul of the late 60s and early 70s! If you're expecting a rehash of the heavy funk jams that burned on the Dap Dippin' album you won't be disappointed, but get ready for a deep, natural (hence the title) soulfulness that not only caught us off guard, but really forms the big, hard-beating heart of the album. The frothing, frenetic funk is as tight as ever, and in spots just as furious, but the attention to songcraft this time out is just as searing and indelible. The eight piece Dap Kings continue to be the best band in the land – with El Michels on baritone sax, Neal Sugarman on tenor, Homer Steinweiss on drums, not-so-secret weapon Bosco Mann on bass, vibes and piano. Guest appearances include fellow Daptone powerhouse vocalist Lee Fields on the the duet "Stranded In Your Love", and strings courtesy of the Bushwick Philharmonic, but make no mistake, this is the band's album. Amazing stuff from in indispensable group – an album that'll keep spinning in our circles for as many years as the great albums by the gritty soul forefathers do! Tracks include "How Do I Let A Good Man Down?", "Natural Born Lover", "My Man Is A Mean Man", a soulful reading of Woodie Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land", "Your Thing Is A Drag", "Fish In A Dish" and "All Over Again". Sublime work from one of the coolest funky combos around – a group who aren't content to just hit the same funky styles as other outfits – and one who really stretch strongly in their pursuit of new sounds! The set's definitely funky – especially on the drums – but there's also this amazing interplay between the horns, weird sounds from the organ, and cool extra touches on auto harp and ukulele – which gives the music these exotic elements that are simply mindblowing! The set's a stone smoker from the start – instrumental, but in ways that let the Menahan Street Band open up way more than when working with a singer – showing us that they've got some of the freshest ideas in the contemporary funky underground. Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). The Frightnrs have plenty more to say here – and they say it in a really sharp-edged approximation of older rocksteady modes! The group are contemporary, but like the best acts on Daptone, they've got an instantly classic feel – thanks to instrumentation and production that take us right back to late 60s Kingston, but with some of the sharper funky currents we've come to expect from the label! And while The Frightnrs may pitch themselves as an old school reggae act, they're also one that have a heavy dose of soul – almost a late night New Jersey current to their music at times – as if the All Platinum/Stang label put out their own version of Jamaican soul. The approach is great, and very unique – and titles include "Hey Brother", "Gotta Find A Way", "What Have I Done", "Nothing More To Say", "All My Tears", "Purple", "Dispute", and "Till Then". One of the coolest new groups we've heard on Daptone in a long time – an instrumental combo that's definitely funky, but which has some of the exotic touches you might expect from their name! There's a nice current of strings that slide in alongside more familiar funk instrumentation – some violins, cellos, and even a harp – used to give the groove this expansive vibe that's partly blacksploitation soundtrack, but much more than that as well! Both Leon Michels and Neal Sugarman are in the group on tenor sax – but the real brainchild here seems to be Toby Panzer, who produced and arranged, and who plays a range of sublime sounds on organ, clavinet, harpsichord, vibes, and percussion! An early example of the deep funk explosion in the 90s – the kind of work that laid the ground for the Soul Fire and Daptone labels to come! The set's performed by a tight bunch of modern funkateers who are transforming the field with hardcore, old school, purist funk grooves. The Other Side previously released a single or two on the label, and they've made a name for themselves by specializing hard funky stripped-down JB's sound grooves. Lots of hard vamping, with good instrumental solos, and tight rhythmic guitar and bass playing. Mostly instrumental, with some chanting and shouting over the top of things. Years before people were digging Daptone, or really giving funky 45s their full due, London DJ Keb Darge created a series of compilations and coined the term "deep funk" – and turned on a whole generation of listeners with his sharp ear for an unusual groove! Plenty of folks had collected soul singles before, but Keb was one of the first to focus exclusively on funk – especially the kind of 45-only, small label releases that barely got any play upon initial release – and which had only become the parlance of a handful of collectors lucky to land a copy. Things really changed when Keb set loose the original series – which not only opened up the music to countless new listeners, but also inspired a wave of new groups, new labels, and new reissues – making for a very different landscape than if he'd never put his collections together. This double-length set does a deep dive back to that series, to bring back some of the best cuts in a razor-sharp format – 21 titles that include "tell Me" by Rickey Calloway, "Love Call" by Ramsey & Company, "Modernization" by Sons Of The Kingdom, "Can We Rap" by Carleen & The Groovers, "Silly Savage" by The Golden Toadstools, "The World" by Sandi & The Matues, "It Ain't Fair But It's Funk (re-edit)" by The Fabulous Originals, "Simple Song" by Zebra, "Cross Bronx Expressway" by Cross Bronx Expressway, "Funk Soul Brother (re-edit)" by Soul Drifter, "Spread Love" by Harris & Orr, "You Got Me Hung Up" by King Tutt, "Free Your Mind" by Record Player, "Psycho" by The Fabulous Mark III, "I Can Deal With That" by Dee Edwards, "Natural" by Leon Gardner, "Contradiction" by Total Experience, "Blueberry Hill" by Joe Washington, "Going Down For The Last Time" by Ronnie Keaton, and "I Wanna Be Loved By You (Kenny Dope re-edit)" by Family Of Eve. Colemine, 2010s. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very well-titled set – given that the Colemine Records label has given us some mighty soulful slabs of wax in recent years! Although a small label, in the hinterland of Ohio, Colemine is fast rising to be one of the coolest funk labels in the world – right up there on a par with older classics like Desco and Soul Fire, and almost able to challenge the supremacy of the Daptone sound! Yet Colemine is also a bit more wide-ranging than some of those other labels, too – as you'll hear in the rich array of sounds within – all pulled from previous funky 45s on the label, many of which are out of print – and presented here in a fantastic full length set. Titles include "Don't Get Caught" by The Droptones, "Yo Todo T Yo" by The Rugged Nuggets, "Street Sweeper" by The Grease Traps, "Like Yesterday" by The Monophonics, "Pacified" by Soul Scratch, "Remember When" by Leroi Conroy, "Jesse's Jing" by In Motion Collective, "Next To You" by Gene Washington & The Ironsides, and "Suction" by On The Spot Trio. ✨✧ Ikebe ShakedownStone By Stone (with download) ... LP
Ubiquity, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great second album from Ikebe Shakedown – easily the group's best work so far, and a real cut above the usual Afro-styled groove! These guys have a great way of laying back in their rhythms – still keeping things funky, but nicely paced too – so that there's a fresh feel to the way they layer together their horns and percussion, and let the keyboards nicely simmer away in the groove! The style's a bit like what El Michels did to more conventional funk groups – with the same sort of super-dope results – and the whole thing was recorded perfectly at the Daptone Studios, with a massively old school sort of vibe. The whole thing's instrumental, and titles include "The Beast", "Rio Grande", "The Offering", "Stone By Stone", "Last Stand", "Dram", "Chosen Path", and "Cover Your Tracks". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sonny Knight & The LakersSooner Or Later (with download) ... LP
Secret Stash, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic funk from Sonny Knight & The Lakers – one of the few cases where an older soul singer can really find a fresh new vibe with a younger group! Knight may well be on his way to hitting the same sort of heights that Lee Fields has reached in recent years – and he definitely works in a Daptone-like groove here with the younger instrumentalists – a sharp combo who give Sonny a perfect blend of deep funk and deeper soul – with more than enough Memphis currents to make things sound a lot more classic than you might expect. Production is right on the money – handled by the same Secret Stash folks who've given us reissues of so much old school soul music – and titles include "Sooner Or Later", "It's Over", "The Cry", "It Had To Change", "Oh Mary", "I Could Never Get Tired", and "Help Me". ✨✧ Marva WhitneyLive & Lowdown At The Apollo ... LP
King, 1970. Used (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Amazing female funk! Years after James Brown first rocked the Apollo Theater with his own live recordings, he returned to the Harlem showplace with the sock-soul diva Marva Whitney – one of his greatest singers ever! This album's a monster all the way through – hard and heavy funk, of the type that's been the blueprint for countless singers to come, especially most of those in the Desco/Daptone/Soul Fire mode. Backing is by the JBs, James produced, and the music is fantastically funky – filled with great groovers like "Things Got to Get Better", "You Got to Have a Job", "Talk With JB", and "Respect". LP, Vinyl record album
(Reissue pressing in the all blue cover.)
