Daniel SantiagoMetropole ... CD
Adventure Music, 2009. New Copy ... $8.99 15.99
A jazz album at heart, but one with some distinct Brazilian touches too – a warm blend of the guitar lines of Daniel Santiago with reeds from Josue Lopez and piano from Vitor Goncalves – all wrapped up in a set of rich flowing rhythms! There's some of the sensitivity here that you might have heard on the best indie Brazilian jazz sides from the 80s – some of those smaller label sets we always dug so much – and the guitar and sax (either tenor or soprano, depending on the track) have a great way of dancing around each other – creating some magical interplay over the piano, bass, and drums. Titles include "Gregorian Samba", "Old City", "In The Rain", "Letter To The World", "Children Of The War", "Lagoon", and "Angola's Dance". CD

Hamilton De HolandaBrasilianos 2 (CD & DVD) ... CD
Adventure Music, 2010. Used CD & DVD ... $4.99
A brilliant follow-up to the first Brasilianos set from Hamilton De Hollanda – one that's even more dynamic than the first, and which comes with a bonus DVD as well! The group is awash in warm acoustic sounds – Hamilton on 10-string mandolin, Daniel Santiago on acoustic guitar, Gabriel Grossi on harmonica, Andre Vasconcellos on bass, and Marcio Bahia on drums – all working in ways that link the best Brazilian jazz modes of the 70s and 80s with some of the tones of the American acoustic underground! The use of harmonica is especially nice – played with a rich chromatic flair in ways that are similar to Mauricio Einhorn – and titles include "Ano Bom", "O Mundo Nao Acabou", "Paz Paes", "Ajaccio", "Carolina De Carol", and "Rafaela". Also features a bonus DVD – with a live performance! CD

Hamilton De HolandaBrasilianos 3 ... CD
Adventure Music, 2012. Used ... $4.99
Really lovely work from Hamilton De Hollanda – the third entry in his Brasilianos series, and possibly the most compelling so far! Hamilton plays a 10 string mandolin with effortless ease – spinning out rich tones and colors that go far beyond traditional Brazilian use of a bandolim – and working in spacious territory that also includes harmonica from Gabriel Grossi, guitar from Daniel Santiago, bass from Andre Vasconcellos, and drums from Marcio Bahia. There's plenty of jazz inflections – and in ways, the album's almost like some of the best ECM sessions of this time from the late 70s – those few that really got the mix of modes right. Titles include "JK Proibido", "Prece Ao Santo Ceu", "Primeiras Ideias", "Saudades De Brasilia", "Saudades Do Rio", "Guerra E Paz", "Caos E Harmonia", and 'A Marcha Dos Candangos". CD

VariousAdventure Music – 10 Years – Compiled By Monday Michiru (3CD set) ... CD
Adventure Music, 2000s/Early 2010s. Used 3CD ... $12.99
A loving look at the Adventure Music label – served up in a 3CD set that offers a heck of a lot of great music for a very low price, all hand-picked by the lovely Monday Michiru! Adventure's been one of the best sources for Brazilian music and acoustic sounds for the past decade – a label with a really strong dedication to a few sorts of styles – like some of the best mixes of jazz, bossa, and choro modes recorded in Brazil – or the wonderful post-folk acoustic underground that's risen up in the US. The package really spans the full scope of the label's music – and offers up a whopping 44 tracks in all – all to introduce you to their efforts. Our hat's off to Monday for the track selection – and the package features work by Hamilton De Holanda, Ricardo Silveira, Daniel Santiago, Muiza Adnet, Mike Marshall, Jovino Santos Neto, Moacir Santos, Antonio Arnedo, Maria Marquez, Clarice Assad, Tom Lellis, Eva Scow, Gui Mallon, Toninho Horta, Florencia Ruiz, Alex Hargreaves, Philippe Baden Powell, and others!
