✨✧ David FrishbergLive At Vine Street ... LP
Fantasy, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A charming little set from the great Dave Frishberg – easily one of the hippest singers and songwriters in jazz during the past few decades! The set's got Dave working solo – just singing along with his own piano accompaniment – in a whimsical way that matches the same sort of energy you'd get from Blossom Dearie or Bob Dorough in a similar setting – both good comparisons, given how much each have sung some of Frishberg's tunes! And as a way of tipping his hat back, the set features a great version of Dearie's "Long Daddy Green" – plus an extended "Johnny Hodges Medley", and loads of great tunes that include "The Dear Departed Past", "Eloise", "One Horse Town", "Zanzibar", and "Blizzard Of Lies". Ebony Rhythm Funk Campaign69 Cents ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), Mid 1970s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Wonderful work from this obscure funky group – a combo who hailed from Indy, only issued two albums back in the 70s, but also left behind this wicked batch of unissued cuts that were recorded up in Chicago! The group have a vibe that's every bit as great as their warmly collaborative look on the cover – clearly an ego-less funky combo who are able to shift singers and moods from track to tracks – trading leads between singers Anthony Joseph Roberts and Pamela Tanner, and also bringing lots of jazzy instrumentation into the mix too! These guys had been together for a number of years before recording the set, and are clearly at the top of their game – woodshedding hard away from the limelight, but knocking it out of the park with cuts that include "69 Cents", "I'm In A Hurry", "Shell Of A Man", "Where You Lead", "That Is Why", "Love So Strange", and vocal and instrumental versions of "See The Light". ✨✧ Knight BrothersTemptation Bout To Get Me ... LP
Chess/P-Vine (Japan), Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Deep deep deep soul from The Knight Brothers – a wonderful duo who cut some fantastic sides for Chess Records in the 60s! The Brothers originally hailed from Washington DC, and came to Chicago by way of New York – somehow managing to pick up all the best bits of these geographic influences in the meantime! At one level, the Knights have a sound that's got lots of touches of southern soul – a pre-Sam & Dave approach to vocals that usually has one singer out front, and the other egging him on. But as they grew – and for a brief while adapted into the vocal group The Carltons – they also started to harmonize a lot more, and moved into a realm that was a lot like The Impressions at their best – sweet harmonies sung with a lot of depth, and often done with a heartbreaking quality that was really wonderful! This Japanese-only album is the closest thing the group ever came to having a full length set on Chess. LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing – with obi!)

✨✧ DellsMusical Menu (Japanese 2LP pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Cadet/P-Vine (Japan), 1969. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A very cool 2LP, Japanese-only pressing of Musical Menu – one that features lots of bonus material, and a different set list than the original album! There's lots of great arrangements here from Charles Stepney, who makes the whole thing a real Cadet studios masterpiece! The sound's a bit like some of the Rotary Connection albums put together under Stepney's supervision – but given that the group is the Dells, the vocals are much much better, with a much stronger soul component – and fused with some incredible musical arrangements! Titles include "If You Don't Move I'll Fall", "You Don't Care", "Stand Up & Show The World", "Always Together", "Hallways Of My Mind", "Does Anybody Know I'm Here", "Don't Make Me A Storyteller", "I Hear Voices", "I Wish It Was Me You Loved", "Strung Out Over You", "I Miss You", "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation", and "Good Bye Mary Anne". ✨✧ Ron Henderson & Choice Of ColorsHooked On Your Love – Rare Tracks ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Underground soul genius from the great Ron Henderson – one of those great 70s also-rans – a true top talent who never fully got his due, but who cut some really wonderful material back in the day! The set features rare 70s singles and some unreleased tracks – all of which work together to showcase Ron's special way of blending older deep soul currents with warmer mellow soul touches – a great blend of southern and sophisticated styles that was years ahead of its time, which may well be why Henderson's genius is only getting its full appreciation in the 21st century! The package features 13 cuts in all – including "Your Love", "Reole Rose", "Sunshine", "She Pleases Me", "The Other Side", "Problem Child", "Yours Is The Love I Want", "You're Twenty One Today", and "Baby I Wanna Be Yours". ✨✧ Jack Costanzo & Gerrie WooLatin Percussion With Soul ... LP
Tico, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An obscure little album from Jack "Mr Bongo" Constanzo – his only entry into the Latin Soul genre, and a really nice batch of grooves! Jacko's working here with singer Gerrie Woo – who sings in English on about half of the album's tracks, giving the set a nice pop-styled Latin groove that reminds us a lot of Willie Bobo's work for Verve, and some of the more unusual indie Latin albums of the time. The set's filled with loads of great numbers – including Hector Rivera compositions "Recuerdos", "Que Vengo Acabando", "Don't Squeeze The Peaches", and "Mambo Jack" – plus covers of "Jive Samba", "Words", and "Green Onions". LP, Vinyl record album
(90s Japanese pressing, on P-Vine!)

✨✧ John Lee HookerCountry Blues Of John Lee Hooker ... LP
Prestige, 1959. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The legendary John Lee Hooker, heard here in one of his more obscure recordings from the late 50s – at least in contrast to his famous sides for Vee Jay Records! This set's an unusual date – recorded in Detroit, despite the claim of the title – and featuring Hooker on acoustic guitar and vocals, without any other instrumentation at all – pitched much more towards the growing folk blues scene than some of his more familiar Chicago recordings. Tracks are short, but pack plenty of punch – and titles include "Black Snake", "I Rowed A Little Boat", "Bundle Up & Go", "Behind The Plow", "Water Boy", "Tupelo Blues", and "Pea Vine Special". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original blue label pressing, with silver text, microphone logo, and deep groove! Vinyl has a short click on side two, but is very clean overall. Cover has some light wear, but is nice too – a really nice original!)

✨✧ Joe TexHold On! It's Joe Tex ... LP
Checker, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible early tracks from the great Joe Tex – recorded long before his bump and "I Gotcha" years, back when Joe was a sweet southern soul singer, with a strong penchant for a sad lyric, and a unique ability to shift between singing and talking, in a style that made him one of the most honest singers of his generation! This early Checker album brings together tracks from before his bigger material on Atlantic – and features the stunning two-part tracks "All I Could Do Was Cry" and "I'll Never Break Your Heart" – in which Joe opened up a whole new territory of narrative in soul music! Also includes the great "You Keep Her" – his answer song to James Brown – plus "Ain't I A Mess", "Baby You're Right", "Sit Yourself Down", and "Get Closer Together". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pam ToddTogether ... LP
Channel, Late 70s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible piece of spacey club funk from the great Pam Todd! The record features remakes of two tracks from the Greg Carmichael years – the funky moog classics "Makin Love" and "Let's Get Together" – plus a number of other cuts that have a very similar feel, and which were arranged by Garry Sherman in a very P&P groove! Titles include "Baise Moi", "You & Me Together", and "Ain't Go Nobody" – and the album's an amazing batch of long club tracks, with a stripped-down funky groove that clearly points the way to 80s house, but which also has the most soulful side of the 70s scene! ✨✧ Tommy TuckerHi-Heel Sneakers ... LP
Checker, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tommy Tucker may be best-remembered for the title track of this classic album – a tune that was covered by countless other artists in the 60s – but he's a hell of a talent with a mighty great range, and a gritty, soulful sound that's perfect for early 60s Chess Records! The album's got modes that move between New Orleans soul, raw R&B, and some surprisingly great mellow moments that almost have Tucker coming across with a slight tinge of jazz in his voice – in the way that Johnny Watson could also dip into styles of that nature at the time. Together, the racks make for a real revelation – way more than you'd might expect if you were only thinking of Tucker as a one-hit wonder – and titles include "Just For A Day", "Trouble In Mind", "I Don't Want Cha", "I Warned You About Him", "Walkin' The Dog", "Hard Luck Blues", "Long Tall Shorty" and "Hi Heel Sneakers". LP, Vinyl record album
