A tasty plate with some stellar cuts by the one-and-only Missy Elliot – proving once again that she's one of the best generators of great hip hop singles of the past decade – with or without Timbaland! Cookbook as a whole goes down a little bit smoother than This Is Not A Test did, with some standout material manned (and wo-manned) by a bigger roster of producers. Standouts include the great Slick Rick homage "Irresistible Delicious" feat Slick Rick, plus the great Neptunes track "On & On", the single "Lose Control" feat Ciara, "Teary Eyed", "Click Clack", "Time And Time Again" and more! A killer album of African-tinged jazz – recorded privately by Randy Weston in the mid 60s, and not issued formally until 1972 by Atlantic Records! The session shows Weston at the height of his modernist experiments – and at a time when his work was going largely undocumented, probably because of its progressive nature – but really flowing out with a rich Africanist inspiration, and served up with even sharper modern edges than before! His group here includes Big Black on congas, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Ray Copeland on trumpet – and Copeland also arranged all the tracks, transforming a few older numbers with the bolder spirit of the session. Titles include "Niger Mambo", "African Cookbook", "Portrait Of Vivian", "Willie's Tune" and Weston's classic "Congolese Children". CD

Eddie Lockjaw Davis swings way out here – working in that cool cooking mode from the 50s, with organist Shirley Scott a very important partner on the date! The group's got a larger sound than usual – thanks to the addition of trombonist Steve Pullman – a player we don't know much, but who shifts the groove nicely away from some of Davis' more staid cookbook albums. Two killers from Eddie Lockjaw Davis – both records that are different from his Cookbook sessions with Shirley Scott, and his twin-tenor battles with Johnny Griffin! First up is I Only Have Eyes For You – easily one of our favorite Eddie Lockjaw Davis albums! The record's a lot livelier than most – and it's recorded with the little-known Paul Weeden trio, who featured a young Don Patterson on organ. Weeden's a pretty good guitarist himself, and the whole session has a nice groovy groovy feel. Titles include "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Street Lights", and "The Way You Look Tonight" – and all tracks are taken at a good clip, with a strong club sound to them. Next is Trackin – a tight little soul jazz cooker from Eddie Lockjaw Davis – done with a sound that's leaner and cleaner than some of his Cookbook sessions – thanks to great Hammond from Don Patterson, working here in the trio of guitarist Paul Weeden! The combo's totally great – nicely focused, and hitting that more mature soul jazz swing that started to really come into play during the mid 60s – that stripping down of the organ stops, focused bite on tenor, and tight comping of guitar – all of which the combo carry off wonderfully – with help from George Duvivier on bass and Billy James on drums. There's a nice long cut with a laidback groove called "Beano", and a number of other shorter standards given the tenor/organ treatment – including "What's New", "Day By Day", and "Robbin's Nest". CD

2 excellent early albums from overlooked saxophone genius Eric Kloss! Grits & Gravy is a really incredible little set – with a varied approach that we love! About half the record has Kloss blowing with a quartet that includes Jaki Byard on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Alan Dawson on drums – going for a style that's more towards the soulful end of Byard's modern approach – and featuring some incredibly well-crafted alto solos for his young age. The other half of the album features a strange but cool larger group – one with Teddy Charles on vibes, Billy Butler on guitar, and even some female backing vocals! The approach on these sides is like that on some of the George Braith and Freddie McCoy sides for Prestige – a great blend of groovy and funky, with a soulful undercurrent that's really sent home by Kloss' solos! A stunning album with a really unique blend of sounds – and titles that include "Repeat", "Grits & Gravy", "Gentle One", "Slow Hot Wind", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". First Class Kloss catches the young saxophone genius at a perfect point in his career, right when he was stretching out from the organ jazz roots of his first few records, but in a way that's not as noodly as in some of his later recordings. The group's incredibly hip – with Jimmy Owens, Cedar Walton, Leroy Vinnegar, and Alan Dawson – and the record bounces with that soulful pre-funk mode that crept into only the best of the Prestige sides of the late 60s. Titles include "African Cookbook", "Chittlins Con Carne", "Comin Home Baby", and "The Chasin Game". 16 tracks in all, including one previously unissued track – "Psychedelicatessen Rag". CD

Trip issue of material from Randy Weston's under-issued years of the mid 60s – just 3 long tracks that are all totally great! Randy's playing with a group that's similar in spirit to that used on the classic African Cookbook – Ray Copeland on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, Bill Wood on bass, Lennie McBrowne on drums, and Big Black on conga. The extended tracks start slow, but really open up – and are almost a blend of some of Weston's Africanist musings, and some of the more poetic modes expressed by Charles Mingus at the end of the 50s. Titles include "Blues For Strayhorn", "Sad Beauty Blues", and "Afro Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

A completely hilarious book, and one that maybe makes the best use of computer photoshopping technology that we've ever seen – as Sean Tejaratchi remakes and remixes work from a whole host of familiar sources – and comes up with these really weird and wonderful images in the process! Nothing is off-limits to the author – as Tejaratchi skewers billboards, paperbacks, album covers, movie posters, supermarket ads, cookbooks, and just about anything else you can imagine – moving images, titles, and subjects around with a sense of humor that's incredible – and which may well have you looking around the house, laughing at things that once seemed commonplace. It's a bit hard to describe the book's magic in words, but you might try checking Sean's Liarspace website for a start – then dive into the hundreds of full color images in the well-done book. Book
