✨✧ King TubbyConcrete Jungle Dub ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A 70s dub masterpiece – and one of the records that really set the standard for the genre! Producer Winston Riley first rose to reggae fame in the Techniques, but here he's a master of the instrumental mode – working with a group of all-star musicians at Harry J's and King Tubby's Studio – all to craft these spare, bassy grooves that are completely out of sight! There's a sense of understatement here that separates the music from later dub work – and the record's a great reminder that sometimes less is more – especially when it comes to exploring the deeper sides of the sonic spectrum. Titles include "Chalist Dub", "Staga Dub", "Dread Dub", "Mistry Maker Dub", "Red Gold & Green Dub", "Peace & Love Dub", and "Who Is The Dub". LP, Vinyl record album

Atmo (Amadeo Tommasi)Telegiornale ... LP
Octopus/Holy Basil (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99
A legendary sound library album on the famous Italian Octopus label – and a set that's maybe one of the most unusual to be recorded by Amadeo Tommasi! The music is filled with all sorts of weird sounds and production elements – almost taking the experiments of the musique concrete generation, and then mixing them with groovier, more upbeat sounds from the early 70s Italian scene – so that things might be jazzy one minute, funky the next, and haunting after that – all at a level that makes the whole thing one of the tip top Italian library gems of the period! Titles include "Crisi Politica", "Episodio Di Cronaca", "Manifestazione Mondana", "Avvenimento Drammatico", "Ripresa Esterna", "Colpo Di STato", and "Problema Ecologico". LP, Vinyl record album

Brother LeeCasio City Rockers ... LP
FNR, 2024. New Copy ... $25.99 29.99
Don't let the Casio in the title fool you, as Brother Lee Skelly plays a whole host of other keyboards too – including Hammond C3, Minimoog, Clavinet, Fender Rhodes, and Mellotron too – in addition to electric sitar and tambura! In fact, Lee plays everything himself – including a whole host of other instruments – but he makes the record come off like some killer funky combo – one that has plenty of keyboards upfront and on long solos, grounded by some massive drums and funky nuggets at the bottom! Titles include "Concrete Bongo Head", "Move It On", "French Madrid", "Soul Noodle", "Super Capri Beat", "Wah Wah", "Welcome To Valium Country", and "Bossa For Ingrid". LP, Vinyl record album

Syl JohnsonIs it Because I'm Black (grey & black swirl vinyl pressing) ... LP
Twinight/Numero, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the best-ever soul albums to come out of Chicago – and it may well be one of the best soul albums ever! The set's the deepest that Syl Johnson ever recorded – and it takes all the hard, raw soul he forged on previous funky 45s – and spins it out in longer album format – with some wicked backings that more than keep up the funk from before, but which also help Johnson deepen the message of his tunes! The political vibe of the album comes through right away in the striking cover and title – and the title track is a 7 and a half minute gem – one of the boldest songs ever about disempowerment. Backings are by Jimmy Jones & The Pieces Of Peace – who really keep the sound deep throughout – and in addition to the classic title track "Is It Because I'm Black", other tunes include "Right On", "Together Forever", "Concrete Reservation", "Walk A Mile In My Shoes", "Black Balloons", and "I'm Talkin About Freedom". Bob Marley & The WailersCatch A Fire (3LP/12" single set) ... LP
Island, 1973. New Copy 4LP ... $81.99 89.99
The first Bob Marley album on Island Records – and the start of a really legendary run that would not only transform reggae in the 70s, but the rest of popular music as well! Chris Blackwell's partially at the helm on production, but the album was mostly recorded in classic Kingston studios – Randy's, Dynamic, and Harry J's – and retains the same vibe as some of Marley's earlier work, but with more of the forward-thinking vision he brought to his time at Island. Bunny Livingston lays down some excellent percussion on the set – and rhythm is from the team of Aston and Carlton Barrett on bass and drums. Titles include the classic "Stir It Up" – plus "Slave Driver", "Kinky Reggae", "High Tide Or Low Tide", and "Concrete Jungle". Very cool 3LP/12" edition – comes in a box, with new notes and rare photos! LP2 features a rare live set recorded in London at the Paris Theater in 1973. LP3 features more unreleased tracks – eight from the sessions, including Jamaican alternative and extended versions of "Slave Driver", "Stop That Train", "No More Trouble", "Stir It Up", "400 Years", and "High Tide Or Low Tide" – and the bonus 12" single features three more unreleased live tracks from 1973! LP, Vinyl record album
(50th Anniversary edition, includes 24 page booklet, bonus tracks, and features a cool etching on one of the LPs!)

Alain PierreDes Morts ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
A wonderfully strange mix of electronics and sounds from around the planet – as Alain Pierre uses field recordings from Thailand and Mexico, then mixes them with these really special creations of his own! Some of the other recordings are presented almost whole, but with some augmentation in a subtle way – and these are then balanced by Alain Pierre's own work, which moves between the more moody, abstract quality of the sound library scene of the 70s, into territory that's maybe more familiar to ears trained on musique concrete! Titles include "Des Morts", "Funerailles Chez Les Hmongs", "Clown", "Fete Des Morts Chez Les Indiens", and "Cryogene". LP, Vinyl record album

Alain PierreO Sidarta (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
Two amazing works from Belgian electronic genius Alain Pierre – both appearing in this form for the first time ever! Side one features 11 minutes of continuous music that Pierre created for the short film O Sidarta – music that mixes a range of electronics, keyboards, and acoustic percussion with studio effects and voice – all with a result that almost feels like some of the longer-form prog creations of the German scene of the time – although with qualities that are much more varied, less rock-based, and with occasional nods to the earlier generation of musique concrete! The flipside features the 17 minute "Notions De Physique Intererieure" – a work that uses a wide array of electric sources in a very short space – theremin, Arp sequencer, Telefunken echomixer, and more Arp, Kort, and Oberheim keyboards – all in this slow-building, wonderfully spacey sort of mode – almost hinting at some of the straighter fantasy soundtracks that Pierre would create in the mainstream – as the piece has the feel of a story in sound! ✨✧ Pierre HenryPierre Henry Collector (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Universal (France), 2010s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mindblowing journey in sound – a dip into the archives of French composer Pierre Henry – the postwar master of electronics and musique concrete, and an artist who was still very active in the final years of his life! The material here was all either recorded or reworked in Henry's own studio during the last few years of his time on the planet – with some tracks that revisit important early compositions, but with a different sonic perspective – mixed with a few new pieces that really continue that wellspring of recording that Henry was doing from the mid 90s onward! There's a wonderful array of sonic elements throughout – plenty of electronics, compelling tape and analog sounds, and lots more that we're hard pressed to figure out – in the best tradition of Pierre's music. Titles include "Variance (remix de Variations)", "Rock Electronique/La Reine Verte", "Prologue/Messe Pour Le Temps Present", "Danse/Mouvement Rythme Etude", "Final/Utopia Hip Hop", "Tokyo 2002", "Machine Danse", and "Tunne De La Mort/Le Fil De La Vie". LP features bonus tracks "Metamorphose/Fragments Rituels", "Enchevetrements De Spirales/Tam Tam Du Merveilleux", and "Etincell Qui Relie Deux Nuits". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersBob Marley – Live At The Quiet Night Club – June 10, 1975 ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Live material from Bob Marley & The Wailers – recorded in an obscure nightclub in our hometown of Chicago during the 70s, and quite a nice change from some of the bigger label releases of the time! The band has a loose, very spontaneous vibe – and there's a nice flow to the longer length of the tracks – served up with instrumentation from Earl Lindon on keyboards and organ, Al Anderson on guitar, Aston Family Man Barrett on bass, and Carlton Barrett on drums – with backing vocals from the I-Threes behind Bob's lead vocals! Titles include "Rebel Music", "Talkin Blues", "Concrete Jungle", "Natty Dread", "I Shot The Sherriff", "Slave Driver", and "Midnight Ravers". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Derek Bailey & Han BenninkDerek Bailey & Han Bennink (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Incus/Honest Jons (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary meeting of free jazz talents – and one of those records that completely changed the game during the 70s! Both guitarist Derek Bailey and drummer Han Bennink work here at a level that seems completely divorced from American roots in jazz – about as strongly in the post-68 freedoms of the European scene as possible – with both musicians opening up an incredible range of sonic elements on their instruments! And while the sometimes-bold drum work of Bennink might be seen as a challenge to the more intricate guitar sounds of Bailey, both players really find a way to work together perfectly – which also makes the record a key illustration of that spontaneous understanding that can arise between the best of the free jazz scene. Titles include "Call That A Balance", "Misty", "The Girl With The Concrete Tongue", and "Who Is That". 2LP version features unreleased bonus tracks on the full second album! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bob Marley & The WailersWelcome To Dubrock ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Bob Marley material that goes way past the obvious – not the big hits of the Island Records years, but instead a whole host of much more obscure recordings from the 70s – tunes that were either rare Jamaican-only singles, or titles that were created only as dubplates for use in sound systems! Bob's vocals are still in place on most numbers, but the dubs are heavy, and the tunes resonate most strongly with basslines and rhythms, bubbling along with a very deep, moody sort of vibe – hardly the sound of Marley's chart-topping hits. Titles include "African Herbsman Version", "Turn Me Loose Dub", "War (alt take)", "Man To Man Version", "Soul Rebel Dub", "Rat Race Dub", "Concrete Jungle Dub", and "Man To Man Dub".
