✨✧ Sam PrekopComma (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A compelling step forward for Sam Prekop – a key member of Sea & Cake for many years, but maybe an even more engaging artist on his own! This set's different than some of Sam's previous records – in that it's all electric, really electronic – with modes that hearken back to early ambient experiments, and some of the Japanese work of the 80s – but which also ties things in more strongly to the crucial contemporary vibe of his scene! These aren't retro electronic modes – as some are freewheeling in rhythm, almost evoking the early Thrill Jockey records of Oval – while others are tuneful and more direct, but still with edges around the sides – a subtle rasp that makes it clear that the record is as much a project of Prekop the visual artist as it is the musician. Titles include "Comma", "September Remember", "Never Met", "Above Our Heads", "Circle Line", "Summer Places", "The New Last", and "Park Line". LP, Vinyl record album

Basso Valdambrini QuintetBasso Valdambrini Quintet (Verve) ... LP
Verve, 1959. Very Good ... $43.99
A sharp-edged session of tremendous trumpet and tenor interplay – served up by the legendary quintet of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini! The album's got a sound that's as hip as it looks – a great approach to 50s modern jazz, done in a style that's equally influenced by west coast cool and east coast hardbop! Valdambrini's trumpet is beautifully measured throughout – with echoes of both Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker – offset by some deeper grooving on tenor from Basso, who plays with a strength and command that few American players of the time could match. Titles include "Come Out Wherever You Are", "Lo Struzzo Oscar", "Lotar", "Gone With The Wind", "Parlami D'Amore Mariu", and "Fan Tan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some splitting at the top of the spine held with clear tape, looks nice otherwise with very light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Miles BonnyLumberjack Soul 2 ... LP
Innate Sounds/Diggers Factory, 2021. New Copy ... $23.99
It's been almost a decade since the first Lumberjack Soul album from Miles Bonny – and in that time, he's grown tremendously – both as a singer and musician, and as an artist who's really in command of his sound! Miles' voice still has the raspy charm we loved before, but the overall setting is far richer and more complex – maybe in a way that owes a lot more to jazz than before, although still with just the right inflections of beats – which are balanced with all these really creative sonic touches from Bonny – shapes and sounds from trumpet, piano, moog, and some other sources that are a bit hard to figure out – mixed together wonderfully. Titles include "Day Alone", "Go With The Sun", "In This World", "Soulful Melodies", "Release & Expand", "Wantu", and "Mother Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Leonard CohenNew Skin For The Old Ceremony ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Near Mint- ... $24.99
New Skin for Leonard Cohen, who by 1974 was ready to start singing with a bit more flair, and do so over more textured arrangements – but still raw both emotionally and in the unglossy instrumentation! The core of the sound is still Cohen's voice, his words, and acoustic guitar – but this record brings in some ragged acoustic instrumentation and loose percussion, as well as some more layered strings, some winds, and backing vocals – Janis Ian among the vocalists. On later records, bigger productions would nearly choke the natural life out of Cohen's songs, but this is one of those totally great records where the change in sound would actually enhance the material in the studio – allowing for one of his best albums of the 70s. Titles include "Is This What You Wanted", "Chelsea Hotel #2", "Lover Lover Lover", "Field Commander Cohen", "Ther Is A War", "A Singer Must Die", "Leaving Greensleeves" and more. Roberta FlackBustin Loose – Original Soundtrack ... LP
MCA, 1981. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Certainly one of the lesser sorts of soul soundtracks that you'll find, and an easily overlooked Roberta Flack record consisting of tracks for this low-budget comedy with Cicely Tyson and Richard Pryor. The music's mostly in an electric modern soul vein – even the instrumental bits – and arrangements are by Barry Miles, Marcus Miller, Buddy Williams, and Roberta herself – who also produced the album. Titles include "Love (Always Commands)", "Lovin You (Is Such An Easy Thing To Do)", "Rollin On", "Qual E Malindrinho", and "Hittin Me Where It Hurts". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Four TopsMain Street People ... LP
ABC, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
Really nice work from The Four Tops – proof that they were still going quite quite strong after Motown! The album's got a hip sound that shows the group moving through a wider range of emotions than we ever remember – crafting rich deep harmonies that still stand apart from the big wave of sweet soul quartets of the early 70s, and which sparkle with all the emotion that Levi Stubbs' voice had to offer. Includes their great theme to Shaft In Africa, the track "Are You Man Enough" – plus loads of other great ones like "I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind", "It Won't Be The First Time", "Sweet Understanding Love", "Too Little, Too Late", "Peace Of Mind", and "Main Street People". ✨✧ Bobby HutchersonColor Schemes ... LP
Landmark, 1986. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A great title for this album from Bobby Hutcherson – given the way he commands such great tones from his work on the vibes! The album's a real gem from his Landmark Records years – that great back-to-basics point when Bobby was almost doing more by doing less – especially in a record with understated brilliance like this. The group's a warmly sensitive one – with Mulgrew Miller on piano, John Heard on bass, Airto on percussion, and Billy Higgins on drums – a perfect rhythmic accompaniment for Hutcherson's hip vibes. Titles include "Rosemary Rosemary", "Remember", "Never Let Me Go", "Recorda Me", "Bemsha Swing", and "Whisper Not". LP, Vinyl record album

Sheila Jordan & Arild AndersenSheila ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1977. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of the hippest albums ever recorded by Sheila Jordan – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of her work! The album's a set of spare duets recorded in Oslo with bassist Arild Andersen – in a setting that recalls some of the initial experimental work she'd done with Roswell Rudd, but with an even more spacious sound overall – one that lets Jordan dominate the tunes strongly with an amazing command of rhythm and timing! The approach is never too self-indulgent, and Andersen's warm tones on bass round out the tunes with a subtle sense of soul. Tunes are a mix of old standards and a few hipper 70s numbers – and include "Song Of Joy", "The Saga Of Harrison Crabfeathers", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "The Lady", and "Better Than Anything". Penny PennyYogo Yogo ... LP
Awesome Tapes From Africa, 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The strong second album from Penny Penny – a set that has the South African singer emerging as even more of a superstar than before – as you might guess from his look on the cover! The style is this unique blend of older South African vocal modes with more contemporary club elements – particular some of the deeper bass bits introduced by the house music generation – used here in ways that are slower than house, but definitely echo the same way – especially with the lower-end pulsations of the keyboard! Penny Penny has this very commanding way of calling out a tune – the sort that made him a big draw across the African concert scene during the decade – on titles that include "Yogo Yogo", "Ibola Aids", "Ingani", "Amarumasi", "Ama Owners", "Ti Samboko", and "Kulani Kulani". Ricardo RichaidTravessiero Feliz ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 26.98
A soaring blend of Brazilian modes – served up here by Ricardo Richaid, who's almost a one-man army himself, given the amount of instruments he plays on the set! Yet the record is also way more than just a batch of tunes cooked up in a bedroom – as Richaid has collaborators on nearly every track – which expands his own work on piano, bass, and a variety of guitars – really helping to situation his raspy and compelling vocals amidst some jazzier touches on flute and tenor, guest vocals, percussion, and other elements along the way! The tunes are often really catchy and compelling, even if your command of Portuguese is as bad as ours – and it's clear that Ricardo really knows his way around a hook, in sort of a universal way – while still making music that's completely his own. Titles include "Drone", "Vip Xuxa", "Maracas Enterprise/Frio Da Manha", "Ave Poena", "O Velho Cai", and "Formigas". LP, Vinyl record album

Pete RugoloTen Trombones Like Two Pianos ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
One of a series of albums Kenton arranger Rugolo cut for Mercury in the early 60s – 10 Trombones Like 2 Pianos, 10 Trumpets & 2 Guitars, and 10 Saxophones & 2 Basses – all making use of differing instrumental lineups to showcase Rugolo's amazing command of sound color and tone! Pete first rose to fame in the Kenton group, and you'll hear plenty of Kenton-like inflections here – but trained towards a more dynamic hi-fi generation with wide sonic range! Titles on the 10 trombones session include "Angel Eyes", "Intermission Riff", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Like Love", and "10 Trombones Like". LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny SmithJohnny Smith Plus The Trio ... LP
Roost, 1960. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A trio is helping out guitarist Johnny Smith – but, as with all of his other Roost Records of the time, the man himself is very far out in the lead – making real magic on the strings of his guitar, and playing with an effortless command of tone and color! Some moments of the record actually have a bit more of an uptempo swing than other of Johnny's albums of the period – but others are a masterpiece is gentle harmonics – those incredible notes that Smith almost seemed to invent for jazz guitar in the 50s – and which seem to come through even more beautifully in the sparest of settings. The trio features Bob Pancoast on piano, Mousie Alexander on drums, and George Roumanis on bass – and titles include "Hippo", "Out Of Nowhere", "Un Poco Loco", "I Got It Bad", "Let's Fall In Love", "Over The Rainbow", and "I Can't Get Started". Eje ThelinJazz Jamboree 62 Vol 2 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Be! (Germany), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Sublime early work from the great Eje Thelin – a Swedish trombonist who made some excellent music in the 60s and 70s, but who hardly ever got his due on this side of the Atlantic! That's a crime, too – as Thelin's a musician with an amazing command of tones and styles – at this point working at a level that rivals the best hardbop modern elements you'd find in the work of players like Curtis Fuller or JJ Johnson – and later in the 60s, quickly moving into exploratory territory to rival the work of players like Grachan Moncur or Roswell Rudd! This album's a tight, swinging affair – as Thelin leads a quintet through some sharp changes, and wonderfully bold solos – including some excellent tenor work from Ulf Andersson, who gets some nice moments in the spotlight. The rest of the group includes Goran Lindberg on piano, Bjorn Alke on bass, and Rune Carlsson on drums – and titles include "Spanish Castles", "Peace", "Forwards", "New Rhumba", and "Asiatic Rays". ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyMusic You All ... LP
Capitol, 1971. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer work from the same sessions that gave the world Cannonball Adderley's classic Black Messiah album – live material from an extended stretch as the Troubadour club in LA – featuring a very righteous, freewheeling version of Cannonball's group! The lineup features some wonderful work on Fender Rhodes from George Duke – who brings a more soulful, spiritual current to the proceedings than Joe Zawinul did in earlier years – a really commanding presence that hints at his brewing solo fame, and which is a very welcome addition to the core lineup, which also includes Cannon on soprano and alto, and brother Nat on cornet! The performance also fetaures some great guest work from Ernie Watts on tenor and Airto on percussion – who really help round out the long tunes on the set. David Axelrod produced – leaving some nice room for Adderley's key spoken bits – and titles include the 12 minute groover "The Brakes", plus "Oh Babe", "Music You All", and "Capricorn" – plus a sweet take on "Walk Tall", which really has Duke stomping away on the Rhodes! The group here is very inventive – Jackie McLean on alto, Larry Willis on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – players who really represent the left side of Blue Note, but not as out as the "new thing" crowd – with a really creative approach to both the rhythms and the solos, commanded by Morgan's rich imagination at this point in his career. This is a set that blew expectations right out of the water. It shows the essence of the great Cobain songwriting, as well has his gift for interpreting others – drawing parallels from Bowie,to The Meat Puppets to traditional folk and blues. Amazing! A fantastic early demonstration of the solo powers of Diana Ross – a live date from Vegas, and one that has her commanding the stage not just as a singer of soul music, but as a female star ready to rival the talents of any of her contemporaries in the mainstream! Ross shines here with a brilliant brightness right from the start – working with a large ensemble that echoes all her best Motown roots, but which also pushes things out in fuller, more vibrant modes too – as Diana runs through tracks that include old soul favorites, jazz standards, and even some surprising choices from the charts – at a level that's filled with poise, class, and soul throughout. Titles include a great "Supremes Medley", plus "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Corner Of The Sky", "I Love You Porgy", "My Man", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and a "Lady Sings The Blues Medley" with titles from the Billie Holiday songbook. Monumental Afro Soul from El Rego Et Ses Commandos – El Rego's best recordings from the late 60s to early 70s – a beautifully done compilation put together by Daptone and Frank Gossner, the deep digging West African music expert behind Voodoo Funk! Theophile Do-Rego is a legend in his native Benin, essentially credited as the godfather of Benin funk – but to date, he hasn't been celebrated around the world nearly as famously as the superstars of African music hailing from Nigeria and Ghana. That's something that can change really quickly if enough people pick up this truly great compilation of pioneering recordings. Singer El Rego and his excellent, diversely capable band – sax and flute by Baboni Oudou, sax by Michel Diogo, guitar by Oscar De Souza, trumpet by Emmanuel Ganssounou, guitar by Roger Coffi, tumba by Marcelin Kpohonon, additional vocals by Christian Agueh, and bass by band leader Paul Hounnou – take a tighter approach to funky soul. Just a couple tracks on this set roll past the 4 minute mark – which gives it a tighter soul sound, along with some Benin blues and some riveting JB-indebted vocal affections. We owe Voodoo Funk and Daptone big for putting this together! Includes "Feeling You Got", "Zon Dede", "E Nan Mian Duku", "Dkobime", "Dis-Moi Oui", "Djobime", "Hessa" (the centerpiece of the album, 3 minutes of Afro Soul perfection. . .the whole set is great, but this track is unforgettable), "Kpon Fi La", "Do Do Baya", "Vive Le Renouveau", "Achuta", "Cholera" and "Ke Amon-Gbetchea". Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really striking mid 80s effort from the legendary Lee Scratch Perry – done at a time when his name and reputation had risen strongly on the global scene – which also seems to come through in the music as well! There's a wider range of styles going on here than before – and Scratch is more upfront, less hidden behind his own production – feeling that sense of mission as a messenger for madness that he seemed to take up at the time – a quality that comes through both in his lyrics and vocals, and in the nicely mish-mashed production as well! The set is credited to The Upsetters, but not the classic lineup – more a cast of characters behind much of the classic Black Ark material, though in good command of Scratch's brand of funky reggae. Titles include "Introducing Myself", "Time Marches On", "The Joker", "All Things Are Possible", "Grooving", "Drum Song", "I Am A Madman", "Show Me That River", and "Sexy Lady". One of those great stripped-down Peterson-plus dates for Pablo Records from the 70s – a session that features Oscar on both piano and organ, working alongside the trumpet of Roy Eldridge! There's no other instrumentation at all, and the sound is completely charming – intimate without sounding too laidback – and especially nice when the organ comes in, which makes for a real change from some of the other Peterson dates of this nature.
