Herbie HancockAutodrive/Chameleon (83 remix) ... 12-inch
Columbia, 1983. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $3.99
Another bit of electro grooving from Herbie's Future Shock LP – with lots of space age keyboards, and tweaked up electro beats! Bill Laswell produced and plays bass, too. Herbie's classic version of "Chameleon" is presented here in a 14 minute remix – but one that really still keeps the original groove nicely! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Herbie HancockDedication ... LP
Columbia/Get On Down, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
Sublime sounds from the great Herbie Hancock – presented here in one of his amazing Japanese-only albums from the 70s! The record is a showcase for Hancock in two different modes – as Herbie plays solo acoustic piano on side one, and delivers these really haunting renditions of "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" – both of them long, and with relaxed exploratory solos. Side two features Herbie on a variety of electric keyboards (moog, arp, etc) – playing with the kind of imagination and funkiness that characterized his best recordings of this period. On this side, Hancock lays down a sweet electric version of "Cantaloupe Island", and a nice spiritual groover called "Nobu" – both of them great, and nearer to the electric vibe of Thrust or Flood. Herbie HancockFeets Don't Fail Me Now ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Sweet keyboard grooves from Herbie Hancock – and a set that has him taking up some of the territory of younger players he'd inspired – like Bobby Lyle, Webster Lewis, or Rodney Franklin! There's a fair bit of soul in the mix here, including some great work on vocoder – blended in with Hancock's work on jazzy keyboards – all wrapped up in a cosmic level that really fits the image on the cover, and which acts as a preface for some of the electro work to come in the early 80s! The blend is great – with that sublime balance that Hancock did better than anyone else – and titles include "Trust Me", "You Bet Your Love", "Tell Everybody", "Honey From The Jar", and "Knee Deep". Herbie HancockFuture Shock ... LP
Columbia, 1983. Very Good+ ... $7.99
The future is now! Or at least it seemed to be back in 1983 when Herbie teamed up with Bill Laswell to record this classic album of computer-driven keyboard grooves! Whatever you might think of the music, the record was a genius move for Herbie – who was kind of flopping around in a number of different styles on previous albums, most of which we like, but none of which seemed to earn him the same cred as his albums in the 70s. Well this one not only earned him plenty of cred, but also a lot of cash, and continued assurance to Columbia that their contract with Herbie was well-placed – and it certainly cast Bill Laswell into the spotlight as well, given that his efforts really provided the core of the album. Tracks include "Rockit", "Earth Beat", "Future Shock", "Autodrive", and "Rough". LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie HancockHeadhunters ... CD
Columbia, 1973. Used ... $3.99
A seminal jazz funk session of the 70s – Herbie Hancock's legendary meeting with The Headhunters, and a killer batch of tunes that really gave the combo their name! Herbie's playing a wide range of keys here – including Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and Arp – but almost even better is the work from the rest of the group – including Bennie Maupin on soprano and tenor sax, Paul Jackson on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion! The earthier elements of the rhythm players really keep Herbie on track – bringing him back to the planet from previous trips into space, and helping him hit an all-solid, all-righteous funky groove! Titles include a great remake of "Watermelon Man", the classic original recording of "Chameleon", and the cuts "Vein Melter" and "Sly" – all nice and long! CD

Herbie HancockMagic Windows ... CD
Columbia (France), 1981. Used ... $8.99
A great little soul album from Herbie Hancock – but one that's often lost in the valleys between his bigger hits of the time! The record was cut in the space right before Herbie's big "Rockit" success – and it's a sweet bit of funky fusion that has a good dose of R&B in the mix – similar to other records from Hancock's Columbia label keyboardist contemporaries – like Rodney Franklin, Webster Lewis, or Charles Earland! All orchestrations are performed by Herbie on a host of keyboards and synthesizers, and just about every cut has vocals – from singers who include Sylvester, Gavin Christopher, and The Waters. But even with this soul component, Herbie still keeps things jazzy – using a good bit of keyboards to open up the tunes in the middle, and hitting hard on all numbers with that classic Hancock approach to funk! Titles include "Magic Number", "Tonight's The Night", "Everybody's Broke", "Help Yourself", and "Satisfied With Love". CD

Funky breaking madness! Nice 12" single of Herbie's big hit cut with Bill Laswell – which sounds surprisingly better today than it did back in 1983. Lots of nice early electro keyboards – and some nice scratching from Grandmaster D St! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Herbie HancockSecrets ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Soulful 70s work from Herbie Hancock – a record that tightens things up from the Headhunters and Sextant sessions, but which still retains a lot of their depth and charm! Players here including some previous partners – like Bennie Maupin on reeds and Paul Jackson on bass – plus the mighty Wah Wah Watson on guitars, James Levi on drums, Kenneth Nash on percussion, and Ray Parker on additional guitar. Tracks are tightly electric fusion, but still have some of the sharper tones of Herbie's electric work – weird moogy moments mixed into more straight ahead funk – all with a sound that's not unlike some of Ramsey Lewis' best Columbia work of the period. Herbie plays Fender Rhodes, Arp, clavinet, mini-moog, and more – and titles include "Doin' It", "Spider", "Swamp Rat", "People Music", and a remake of "Cantelope Island" that's pretty darn tasty! Columbia/Legacy, 1973. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
An incredible record – and virtually the blueprint for countless other keyboard records to come! At the height of his 70s powers, Herbie really takes off into space with this set – moving away from more commercial music, and hitting a groove that's totally righteous, totally electric, and completely mindblowing! The album's got a bit of a Headhunters vibe, but it also veers off into some very wild analogue electronics too – a mix of Fender Rhodes, clavinet, melotron, and echoplex processing – augmented by additional work on Arp from Patrick Gleeson. Other players on the set include Bennie Maupin on reeds, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and the great Buck Clarke rounds out the combo on percussion. The album only features three long tracks – "Rain Dance", "Hidden Shadows", and "Hornets" – but all of them are killers! CD

Hancock himself handles a host of incredible keyboards – Fender Rhodes, clavinet, Arp, and lots more – all in a lean electric style that still sounds as fresh today as it did way back in the mid 70s – perhaps even more so, given the return to this sort of basic groove that has happened in recent years! Herbie HancockVSOP ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
Though there are a number of different LPs using the VSOP title in a few different ways, this was the first, a double album recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, featuring Herbie leading groups that represented a number of different points in his career. The first lineup later recorded under the name VSOP, and was a re-grouping of the classic Miles quintet, with Freddie Hubbard in Miles' place, in fine form here, the group playing nice expansive lines as they stretch out. They take on "Maiden Voyage" and "Nefertiti" and really stretch out on "Eye Of The Hurricane". Sides 3 and 4 are the real treat, with Herbie's early electric band that had recorded the spacey Warner's LPs playing "Toys" and "You'll Know When You Get There", and then the funk band that was contemporanious with the release of the LP, featuring Headhunters Paul Jackson & Bennie Maupin, and some heavy wah wah funk from Wah Wah Watson, on "Hang Up Your Hang Ups" & "Spider". One of Herbie Hancock's great acoustic moments of the 70s – quite a contrast to his more dynamic electric work of the time, with the subtle, sensitive approach of some of his Japanese trio sessions! Likewise, Chick Corea reminds us that he's great on the acoustic keys too – and works here alongside Herbie on these long-spiralling tracks with no other instrumentation at all – just sublime twin-piano magic as both players bring their voices together, then rise up individually – on titles that include "Maiden Voyage", "Button Up", "Liza", "La Fiesta", and "February Moment" – all coming out very fresh and different here! Nobuo Hara with Sharps & FlatsSoul Modern Jazz 3 – Members ... CD
Columbia/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $22.99
Hard driving jazz from the Japanese scene of the 50s! The album's one of the best recorded by Nobu Hara and the legendary Sharpes & Flats group – a really swinging set of big band jazz that drives with the power of some of the 60s recordings by the Clarke-Boland Big Band, and which offers plenty of space for the soloists to swing out during the set with really dynamic energy – especially as the saxes and trumpets break from the group to start their own sort of presence in the music! Unfortunately, all the notes are in Japanese – so we can't tell you the exact lineup or the song titles – but the album's a strong one, and a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese scene in the postwar years! Coleman Hawkins & Clark TerryBack In Bean's Bag ... LP
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $18.99
A way different album than usual for both tenor giant Coleman Hawkins, and up-and-coming trumpet talent Clark Terry – a very soulful set that falls much more into the spirit of the few soul jazz gems on early 60s Epic/Columbia Records! This could be because Dave Bailey's holding down the drum chores, and the record sounds a bit like his great recordings from the early 60 – a tight, soulful groove that's also got support from Tommy Flanagan on piano and Major Holley on bass! All tracks are nice and long, with strong solos from Hawkins and Terry – and there's a fantastic cut called "Tune For The Tutor", which was written by Pat Patrick, and which really grooves! Other nice ones include "Feedin' The Bean" and "Squeeze Me" – plus "Don't Worry Bout Me", and "Michelle". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Heath BrothersExpressions Of Life ... LP
Columbia, 1981. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Great work by The Heath Brothers – a lot slicker and smoother than their earlier album for Strata East, but still filled with a soulful jazzy approach that befits their rich talents! By the point of this album, Jimmy Heath, once a rougher talent on the tenor, had emerged as one of the smooth soul maestros on the instrument – ranking next to Grover Washington Jr and Stanley Turrentine for a mellifluous sound and well-timed approach to the solo. Heath's written some great tracks here that are underpinned nicely by brother Percy's strong work on bass – still acoustic amidst some added electric instrumentation on some of the tracks. Quite possibly the best of the Heath Brothers' post-Strata East albums – and one of the few to capture the spacious sound and hipper undertones that made their first record so great! The style here is certainly more conventional – slightly in that "embrace all jazz tradition" mode that was sometimes popular at the time – but there's still plenty of hip moments here too, including flute and soprano sax work from Jimmy Heath, keyboards from Stanley Cowell, and bits of kalimba too – although used a lot more sparely than before. The record's probably most reminiscent of Heath's best straight work of the time – and titles include "In New York", "A New Blue", "Mellowdrama", "Changes", "Prince Albert", and "Artherdoc Blues". Tracks are all quite long, and really open up with fierce horn work – both from Hino on trumpet and flugelhorn, and from the great Steve Grossman on tenor and soprano sax – blowing boldly to match Terumasa's youthful energy on the record. The set also gets plenty of propulsion from Motohiko Hino on drums – who plays like a mofo on the album's opener – and get some especially soulful focus from Harold Mabern on electric piano and Richard Davis on bass – both great players who complete this unique lineup. Sweet electric Freddie Hubbard – a wonderfully laidback session that's filled with space and soul – hardly what you'd expect from the title! The album follows nicely in the style that Hubbard hit at CTI – an openly flowing groove that has Freddie's trumpet on top of long electric piano lines from George Cables, with occasional fuller backings to flesh out the sound! Arrangements are by Dale Oehler, who's conducting a larger group behind a core quintet that also features excellent reeds from Junior Cook – possibly one of his strongest (and only) appearances on an electric date like this. Cables is the champ, though – and really makes the set cook by changing the vibe strongly with his keys – setting a tone for Freddie throughout. Jiro Inagaki & His Soul MediaHead Rock (Japanese Record Day release) ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $49.99
A definite head rocker here – a brilliant bit of funky jazz from Japan, and a record that beautifully balances acoustic and electric elements! Jiro Inagaki plays some heavy tenor and soprano sax on the record – working with a combo that includes electric guitar, electric bass, and organ – plus a trumpet joining Jiro in the frontline! The rhythms are tight, hard, and very funky at times – drenched in soul, but also filtered through a bit of a psychedelic influence, as you might guess from the cover on the record – and Jiro's choppy tenor and soprano come off with some of the same sharp notes and changes you might expect from the best European funky fusion of the time. Tracks include "Spoonful", "The Ground For Peace", "Head Rock", "The Vamp", "Back To Back", "High Jack", and "Twenty One". LP, Vinyl record album

Stunning soul from The Internet – a group who just seem to get better and better with each new record – to the point where we fell in love with this set after hearing just the first few notes! The sound is wonderful – warm, but funky – bottom-heavy, but soaring to the skies with this righteous energy too – completely empowered vocals delivered perfectly by the fantastic Syd – all couched in backings that have conventional elements, but gelled together in this way that's very individual – maybe spaced out a bit around the edges, but never in any sort of sloppy spacey way at all. The whole thing packs a hell of a punch – as you'll discover on tunes that include "Hold On", "Come Together", "Roll (Burbank Funk)", "Bravo", "Stay The Night", "Next Time/Humble Pie", "It Gets Better With Time", "Look What U Started", "La Di Da", and "Come Over". A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ever – "Voyage To Atlantis" and "Footsteps In The Dark" – plus the midtempo tune "Tell Me When You Need It Again", another great track that almost has the same power as the other two. Other tracks include "Climbin Up The Ladder", "The Pride", and "Go For Your Guns". CD

Jackie & RoyLike Sing – Songs By Dory & Andre Previn ... LP
Columbia, 1963. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A really unique little record from Jackie & Roy – one that has them singing a super-fresh batch of tunes from budding songwriters Andre and Dory (nee Langdon) Previn! The tunes are all really great – the kind of playful material that seems to bring out the best in Jackie & Roy, on a level that matches all those excellent Tommy Wolf/Fran Landesman tunes that sparkled so much on the pair's 50s albums for ABC. Backing is in a small combo mode, and the set has the best energy of Jackie & Roy's earlier years – in a format that sometimes has them singing duet, sometimes trading lines, and sometimes stepping out solo. Titles include "Like Love", "The Runaround", "Sing Me An Abstract Song", "Control Yourself", "You're Married", and "Where, I Wonder". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99
Stonewall Jackson may not be one of the best-remembered singers of his generation, but during the time covered in this set he really delivered a fantastic string of singles for Columbia Records – the kind of classic country gems that are often equally great on both sides of the record! Jackson's got this raw twang on his vocals on most of these tracks – a warbling charm that's somewhere in the Lefty Frizell side of the spectrum – and even as he moves into some folksier material during the second stretch of this set, his vocal charms hold things very strong – especially as he moves back to straighter country towards the end. 32 tracks in all – with titles that include "Hungry For Love", "Leona", "That's Why I'm Walkin", "Waterloo", "Don't Be Angry", "A Broken Heart A Wedding Band", "I Need You Real Bad", "A Wound Time Can't Erase", "Can't Hang Up The Phone", "Slowly", "Thirty Links Of Chain", "Run", "Grieving In My Heart", and "Gettin Older". JJ Johnson & Kai WindingJay & Kai + 6 ... LP
Columbia, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $6.99
One of the flashiest Columbia sessions from the team of Kai Winding and JJ Johnson – but also one of the best! The record almost borders on gimmicky – with an 8-piece trombone section, and use of the unusual trombonium instrument – but thanks to some deft arranging, the sound is relatively tight without being goofy – and the pair manage to push the use of the trombone in jazz to new levels without resorting to silly tricks, as on Hi Fi albums of the period. Other trombonists include Urbie Green, Eddie Bert, and Jimmy Cleveland – and titles include "Rise N Shine", "Night In Tunisia", "No Moon At All", "Jeanne", "You're My Thrill", "Four Plus Four", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". Samuel Jonathan JohnsonMy Music ... LP
Columbia/Be With (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of our favorite 70s soul records ever – and a totally unique set as well! To our ears, Samuel Jonathan Johnson belongs in the company of Roy Ayers, Norman Connors, and other spiritual soul heavyweights – even though he only ever cut this one album for Columbia Records back in 1978! The set's got a really visionary feel – keyboards that compare with the best mellow soul lines of Donny Hathaway, and a vocal style that's got some of the range of Ronnie McNeir, mixed with a more human approach to the lyrics that makes the whole thing wonderfully personal, too. There's lots of jazzy elements on the Fender Rhodes lines – which bubble beautifully on the mellow moments, and step out boldly on the album's few groovers – making for a richness that goes way beyond the vocals, and which puts Johnson in the company of DJ Rogers or Webster Lewis. Forgive us if we keep name-dropping like that – but the set's a stunning treasure from an artist who should have gotten the same sort of recognition as all the best soul talents of the 70s. The title track – "My Music" – has an amazing bit of bubbling synth intro (and outro), cool spacey vocals by Sam, and a mellow, but tight groove that sounds a bit like something that Roy Ayers might have cooked up – and it leads off an incredible album of other titles that include "Sweet Love", "Just Us", "You", "Reason For The Reason", "Because I Love You", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "Yesterdays & Tomorrow", and "Thank You Mother Dear". Beautiful fusion from guitarist Steve Khan – one of those great 70s players who could play things tight, yet still keep an edge! The album's got a well-produced groove – the same sort of soulful undercurrent you'd get in other Columbia fusion sets of the period – yet Khan's guitar has a bit more rasp than most, less of the sanded-down, clean-toned notes that you'd get from some of his contemporaries. Bob James produced, and you can certainly hear his ear on some of the keyboard parts – especially the sweet Fender Rhodes, handled by both James and Don Grolnick. A really wonderful solo set by Gladys Knight – a record that has her stepping out strongly on her own, during a brief break from The Pips! The set's arranged by Gene Page – who mixes together strings and soul at a level that supports the classy style that Knight had forged at Buddah Records on previous records with her group – but which also gives her a bit more of a modern soul vibe overall, very much in the increasingly sophisticated style that other female singers were getting at the time. There's a few groovers, and some great mellow cuts – and titles include "You Loved Away The Pain", "It's The Same Old Song", "The Best Thing We Can Do Is Say Goodbye", "My World", and "You Bring Out The Best In Me". Sweet 80s groove from Gladys Knight & The Pips – just the kind of record that shows why the group kept going strong for so many years! The classic approach is still very firmly intact – Gladys' wonderful lead, soaring out over the Pips' warm harmonies – a vocal power that so many other groups could never get this right – evolved amazingly here from the early soul years of the group's origins. The approach of the set is lean and smooth, yet turns out to be a perfect fit for the maturing Knight/Pips sound – a mode that still keeps them right out in front of the pack, with a great mix of grooving and sophistication. An overlooked gem from The Koobas – a group who tried very hard and made some excellent records in the late 60s – only to see this set come out after the group had thrown in the towel! Don't let that stop your ears from digging in deep, though – as the whole thing's a subtle masterpiece from a time when so many other things were going on – a record that's got its own sort of logic that's completely charming – neither garage or psych, but with the wit and sharpness of both – set to these fantastic vocals from Keith Ellis, a singer whose bite would also hit big with Juicy Luicy, but who somehow sounds more sinister here. It's hard to sum up the charms of the record in a few short words, but they're definitely there the moment you first give the record a listen – smart songs, creative production, and lots of twists and turns that really keep things interesting – on titles that include "Here's A Day", "Constantly Changing", "Barricades", "Royston Rose", "Gold Leaf Tree", and "Mr Claire". Tony KosinecProcesses ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1969. Used ... $6.99
A beautiful little record from Tony Kosinec – a lesser-known songwriter from the late 60s scene, and one with a pretty unusual sound as well! Tony originally hails from the UK, but was working in Canada at the time of this set – and the album's an unusual blend of folksy roots with jazzier phrasing – a set that sits nicely in the company of Columbia contemporaries like Leonard Cohen or Tim Hardin, and which also has a voice that's as uniquely formed as theirs! Tony's tunes are quite poetic, but never too much so – and his way of singing is sometimes fluid, but never flowery – almost informed by jazz, but not jazzy – if we can get away with that many qualifiers in one sentence. There's a slight hint of roots in the backings, but Tony's accent and performance never lapse into simple country cliches. Titles include "Mystic Fifties", "Tyrant", "Down On Words", "Cleopatra", "Feather Of A Boy", "Summer/Spring", and "I Can't Sing". CD
