Zoot Sims & Henri RenaudJazz In Paris – Zoot Sims Et Henri Renaud ... CD
Universal (France), 1952/1956. Used ... $3.99
Excellent rare work from Zoot Sims and French pianist Henri Renaud! The CD features 4 tracks from a 1956 session originally issued by Club Francais Du Disque – featuring a quintet with Sims on tenor, Renaud on piano, and Jon Eardley on trumpet. The work is quite unusual for Sims French recordings from the time (or his American ones, for that matter), in that it's really open-ended, with long tracks that let him blow these open solos you normally don't get in his more tightly arranged work from the 50s. The four tracks are all in the 7 to 8 minute range – and titles include "Charlie Went to Cherbourg", "Charlie Was In Rouen", and "Crazy Rhythm". The remaining 6 tracks on the CD are from the album New Sound At The Boeuf Sur Le Toit – issued under Renaud's name, and recorded in 1952 with a swinging group that includes Nat Peck, Sandy Mosse, Jimmy Gourley, and vibist Fats Sadi. The set was arranged by Francy Boland – and it's got a strong swinging groove on nearly ever cut. Titles include "Pinch Bottle", "Pot Luck", "Out Of Nowhere", and "Venez Donc Chez Moi". CD
