Claude ThornhillDream Stuff (10 inch LP) ... LP
Trend, Early 50s. Very Good- ... $14.99
Mellow and moody work from the great Claude Thornhill – an album of lush orchestrations, but done with some of the sophisticated jazz touches of the 50s west coast scene! The feel is certainly in keeping with the title, but mostly in an evocative way, and never too sleepy – and Thornhill's piano echoes out over the backdrops nicely, with a slightly modern edge. The whole thing comes together like a larger suite of tracks, and titles include "Summer Is Gone", "Puttin & Takin", "You Go To My Head", "Adios", "To Each His Own", and "By A Rippling Stream". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a split bottom seam, splitting on the top seam, some surface wear & aging.)

✨✧ Claude ThornhillClaude Thornhill & His Orchestra Play The Great Jazz Arrangements Of Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, & Ralph Aldrich ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of work that documents the rich talents of the Claude Thornhill group – one of the best of the later large groups of the 40s – thanks to some superb arranging talents on their recordings! The first 11 tracks on the set feature Gil Evans arrangements, often on more familiar tunes that take on a dramatic new life in the hands of Evans – working here in a style that has some slight modern touches, but none of the "cool" of later years. Next up are 10 tracks arranged by Gerry Mulligan, with a fluid feel that's in keeping with some of his own work, but which also has a nice boppish undercurrent. The set's topped off by 2 more tracks arranged by Ralph Aldridge, and features a total of 24 tracks in all, mostly recorded for the Columbia and Trend labels. Titles include "Yardbird Suite", "Buster's Last Stand", "Arab Dance", "La Paloma", "Anthropology", "Sorta Kinda", "Lover Man", "Rose Of The Rio Grande", "Jeru", "The Song Is You", and "Donna Lee". ✨✧ Bunny BeriganBunny Berigan & His Boys (aka Take It Bunny) ... LP
Epic, Mid 30s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Classic 30s work from trumpeter Bunny Berigan – served up here in a great LP package that showcases his talents on the horn! There's a warmth and raspy charm to these sides that instantly shows why Berigan was a standout player at the time – an artist who could hit the hard notes with the frenzy of any of his competitors, but also an entertainer who was willing to step back and personalize (and vocalize) things when needed. Players on the tunes include many who would go onto lead their own groups – Artie Shaw, Jack Teagarden, Claude Thornhill, and others – and titles include "I Can't Get Started With You", "Solo Hop", "Dixieland Shuffle", "It's Been So Long", "Let Yourself Go", "If I Had My Way", "I'd Rather Lead A Band", and "A Melody From The Sky". ✨✧ Chris ConnorAll About Chris ... CD
Bethlehem/Five Four (UK), 1954/1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sublime vocal work from the lovely Chris Connor – a collection of her key mid 50s recordings for Bethlehem Records, all tracks that really helped redefine the sound of the voice in jazz at the time! Before working at Bethlehem, Chris was mostly known as the singer in the big bands of Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill – but on these recordings, the label wisely set her up in small group format – giving Connor a newly sensitive setting that produced tracks that are still some of her greatest ever! Backings are by the Ellis Larkin Trio, The Vinnie Burke Quartet, and the Ralph Sharon Group – and the CD features 21 tracks that include "All About Ronnie", "Lush Life", "Why Shouldn't I", "Ridin High", "All This & Heaven Too", "Fly Me To The Moon", "Trouble Is A Man", "Stella By Starlight", "He's Coming Home", "Goodbye", and "A Cottage For Sale".
