Eternal soul from Marvin Gaye in both its classic form AND in a contemporary light – on a nice little 10-inch single! Side 1 features the original 7-inch single mono versions of "What's Going On" and "God Is Love" – both as mindblowing today as ever – not only just because it documents the incredible moment Marvin moved past the simple love songs of earlier years, but also because he was innovating an amazingly complicated approach to soul music, one that would touch the work of others for years to come. Side 2 features new versions of "What's Going On" with contemporary hip hop soul hero BJ The Chicago Kid and a remix – both of which are surprisingly solid given the historical heft of the originals, but we really gotta hand it to BJ The Chicago Kid for approaching the contemporary remodel/"duet" with the utmost care and respect! 12-inch, Vinyl record
A funky fusion classic – presented here in the rare, unedited original full length mix – with even wilder sounds than the original! The core groove is definitely in place, as are the great keyboards – but this version really opens up and lets them soar even more than before – hitting some wild moments before coming back nicely to the groove! Carver Area High School/Carver Seniors Class Of 83 —
Get Live 83/Carver Senior Song ... 12-inch Challenger/Soul Jazz (UK), 1982. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)...

A high school record, but also one of the first hip hop singles to come out of Chicago! Given that in the early 80s, Chi-town was still focusing mostly on soul (and soon, house), the Windy City was way behind New York in terms of hip hop production – and most early rap efforts came out as novelty tunes by local personalities. But this little gem has a surprising level of quality – simple old school backings at best, copping a Sugarhill groove from the start – but some nicely scripted lyrics from a number of Carver High School seniors, presented in a way that's a bit more staid than the usual east coast single – but still quite nice! The flipside has a mellower cut – a cool "Senior Song" that's done like some laidback 80s R&B ballad, but with a more youthful vocal approach. 12-inch, Vinyl record

A Chicago house classic, taking off on the riff from the Isaac Hayes tune that's been re-edited and mixed as doubles in clubs for ages and turning it into a new club anthem! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a blue sleeve, with light wear. Label has writing in marker.)
An undisputed Chi House classic! The hard drums and bubbly electronics of this one make it a killer, and leave it sounding even fresher today than when it first came out. Lead vocals by Keith Nunnally are extremely soulful – with a great sound that gives the cut a lot more bottom than some of the other, flatter Chicago cuts from the time. Served up on 4 long mixes, too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Original white label pressing with blue text. Label has small writing in pen.)
"Dance To The Drummer's Beat" was real stormer in the South Bronx back in the day, and a great bit of uptempo funk with congas – the break and chorus are both great, and the single's like finding a page in the history of hip hop book! A great little ep of tracks from Joe R Lewis – one of the lesser-known figures of the Chicago house scene of the 80s, and an artist who had a sound that presaged some of the New York styles of the late 80s and early 90s. The set's got a nice moody feel overall, and features 6 tracks that include "Sometimes I", "All Aboard House Train (inst)", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Separate Ways (insane mix)", "Change Reaction (headache mix)", and "Set Me Free (radio)" with vocals by Janene Moran. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Original blue label pressing. Labels have minimal wear.)
