One of the records that really put saxophonist Scott Hamilton on the map – a well-matched set with reedman Bob Wilber, and a date that has each player taking a different end of the sonic spectrum! Wilber blows alto, soprano, and clarinet – often with a style that maybe hints at trade, but with more swing strengths overall – which Hamilton really amplifies with his well-blown, well-toned solo work. Other group members include Chris Flory on guitar, Phil Flanagan on bass, and Chuck Riggs on drums – and the use of a guitar instead of a piano really makes for a fresh flavor on the date. Titles include "Puggles", "Freeman's Way", "Riff", "Time After Time", "Treasure", "Jonathan's Way", and "144 West 54th". LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan —
Idol Gossip ... LP Chiaroscuro, 1976. Near Mint- ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those great overlooked dates from Gerry Mulligan's sometimes-ignored stretch of the mid 70s – a time when he was really trying out some excellent new musical experiments! This cooking set features his baritone in a group that really cooks nicely – and in ways that are quite different than you'd ever expect from the Mulligan of the 50s – and maybe even the Gerry of the 60s too! There's a bit of electricity in the group – thanks to Fender Rhodes from Tom Fay and guitar from Mike Santiago – and that element is a surprisingly wonderful complement to Gerry's baritone – which only seems to have a deeper sense of soul in comparison. Dave Samuels adds in some excellent vibes – and the other players include George Duvivier on bass and Bobby Rosengarden on drums – on titles that include "Strayhorn 2", "Idol Gossip", "Taurus Moon", "Waltzing Mathilda", and "Walk On Water". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small corner bump and light surface wear.)
Zoot Sims really makes the album cook – adding in a lot more bop sensibility than you might expect on an album with violinist Joe Venuti – and really bringing in a heck of a lot of soul, thanks to his raspy tone on the tenor! The set's got a nicely jumping sort of feel – with John Bunch or Dick Hyman on piano, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, and Milt Hinton on bass – and titles include "Avalon", "Russian Lullaby", "Where Or When", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "Shine". CD seems to have a lot more tracks than the album – 14 numbers in all! CD
Frank Wess captured live with his quartet and special guests Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath, and Flip Phillips. Tracks are a mix of standards and Wess originals including "Estoril Sol", "My Funny Valentine", "Nada Mas", "It Could Happen To You", "Cottontail", and "Surprise, Surprise". CD
A similar title and lineup to Lee's other Nonet album of the same year – but with 12 tracks that include "April/April Too", "Who You", "Fanfare", "Chi Chi", "Giant Steps", "Stryker's Dues", and "Hymn Too". CD
Soulful fusion from the mighty Tarika Blue – a group who recorded for the Chiaroscuro label around the same time that James Mason gave the imprint his classic Rhythm Of Life album – recording here in a sound that's not only a bit like James, but which also features his guitar on a number of tracks! The group's way different than the standard fusion acts of the time – as they blend together spiritual currents that allow for breezier instrumentation – sounds that take off to the skies, while still grooving at the core – thanks to an excellent lineup that also includes guitar from Ryo Kawasaki and soprano sax from Justo Almario! The core of the group features Philip Clendeninn on Fender Rhodes and Arp, with bass from Barry Coleman and drums from Kevin Atkins – and the record's got some very James Mason-like vocals at some points, from singers Dolores Smith and Irene Datcher. Titles include "Jimi", "My Love Is So Free", "Love It", "Dreamflower", "Things Spring", "Truth Is The Key", and "Charlie". LP, Vinyl record album

70s pressing of one of the most fantastic modernist jazz records of the 60's! The team of Bill Barron and Ted Curson never gets the mention that it should in histories of jazz, but the two of them were an amazing team that pushed the boundaries of modern jazz, while still managing to stay in a deeply swinging groove. Curson's horn is tight, sharp, and exquisitely pitched on the session – and Barron's tenor wails in a way that hardly shows up on some of his later albums. The group on here is a quintet, with Kenny Barron on piano, Ronnie Boykins on bass, and Dick Berk on drums. Tracks include "Dwackdi Mun Fualik", "In A Monastery Garden", "Jes Swingin", "Hurdy Gurdy", and "The Leopard". Originally issued briefly in 1964 on the Audio Fidelity label – but hard to find even in this format! LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite albums ever – and every track is a masterpiece! The album was originally cut for the tiny Chiaroscuro label in 1977 – and it's got a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – soaring, soulful, jazzy, and righteous – wrapped up in a blend that's never been done this perfectly again! James Mason's a player who's know for a bit of keyboard work with other artists – but here, he's really working as a collective power – bringing together a brilliant ensemble that work as one to hit some sublime sounds – much in the way that Roy Ayers could work some key magic with his groups at the same time, but with a vibe that's very different too. Players include Ayers associates Justo Almario on saxes and Philip Woo on piano – and a young Narada Michael Walden adds some excellent drums to the record – a lot more powerful and funky than on most of his own albums! Lead vocals are by Clarice Taylor – who's got this unique voice that really makes the record – proud, but sensitive at the same time too – and Mason plays lots of Fender Rhodes, polymoog, Arp, and a bit of guitar. Titles include the breakbeat classic "Funny Girl", the monster groover "Sweet Power Your Embrace", the funky "Slick City", and the massive "Free" – but every cut's a winner, and others include "Mbewe", "Rhythm Of Life", and "Dreams". This is the kind of album that makes us proud to be in business! LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful sound library set from Piero Umiliani, and one that's overflowing with contributions from some mighty hip jazz musicians on the Italian scene of the 70s – including Enrico Pieranunzi on both electric and acoustic piano, Oscar Valdambrini on trumpet, Dino Piana on trombone, and Bruno Tommaso on bass – all working with very cool organ and moog from Piero himself! There's flute on many tracks – played by both S Genovese and N Rapicavoli, both players we don't know at all – and the instrument is often used in these cool, compressed ways that are mighty nice – and which make a stunning sonic counterpart to the other instrumentation, especially when Umiliani turns up some of the odd effects in the production! Titles include "Regalita", "Babilonia", "Chiaroscuro", "Battimenti A Tarantella", "Flauto Notturno", "Penombra", and "Fantasia Italica". LP, Vinyl record album
