Chester ThompsonPowerhouse ... CD
Black Jazz/P-Vine (Japan), 1971. Used ... $24.99
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with labelmate Rudolph Johnson on tenor, blowing some beautiful lines alongside long, drawn-out Hammond solos from Thompson! The overall feel is similar to some of the great late 60s Prestige sessions – especially Don Patterson dates – with the group free swinging away in a very live format, just like you might have heard if you caught them in some hip southside club. Other players include Al Hall Jr on trombone and Ray Pounds on drums – and the album features four long jamming tracks, with titles that include "Mr T", "Trip One", "Weird Harold", and "Powerhouse". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)
Also available Powerhouse ... LP 22.99

Air PocketFly On ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
A warm and soulful set of fusion tracks – issued only in Japan, but recorded by a hip group from the US! Air Pocket features the Fowler Brothers – Walt, Bruce, Ed, and Steve – on trumpet, trombone, bass, and alto, respectively – plus drummer Chester Thompson, guitarist Mike Miller, and pianist Stu Goldberg, who really plays some great moog, clavinet, and electric keys on the set! Tunes are well-written – a bit choppy, but never too jamming, and really just done in this nice blocky way that creates a slightly funky approach, and a good degree of soul. Titles include "Elephant's Graveyard", "Hi Lo Redic", "Colors For Marvin", "Night's Move", and "Becky". CD

✨✧ O'Donel LevyBreeding Of Mind ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Wonderfully baroque funk from the great O'Donel Levy! The album's got some very cool arrangements by Manny Albam that mix together strings and funk – in a super-dope way that sounds a lot like the work coming out of Cadet during the late 60s – and the rest of the set features Levy playing with a smaller group, one that includes Chester Thompson on drums and Charles Covington on organ. The approach is great on both types of sets – complicatedly funky, in a way that's held up incredibly well over the years – and which warrants greater discovery of Levy's work from the time. The album's got covers of "We've Only Just Begun", "Let's Stay Together" and "It's Too Late" – plus some groovy originals like "Cherries", "The Chocolate Horse", "Ideal", and "Breeding of Mind". CD

Weather ReportBlack Market (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1976. Used ... $18.99
A new chapter in the sound of Weather Report – but one that's still equally classic! Founding members Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul are joined here by Jaco Pastorius on bass, Chester Thompson on drums, and Alejandro Acuna on percussion – and Pastorius especially helps bring a lot of new colors and energy to the group! The style is still somewhere in the space of years past – somewhat cosmic at times, but also well-suited to leaner, flowing grooves that stretch out warmly – making great use especially of Zawinul's keyboards. Added players include Alphonso Johnson on bass and Don Alias on drums – and titles include "Black Market", "Cannon Ball", "Three Clowns", "Barbary Coast", "Herandnu", "Elegant People", and "Gibraltar". ✨✧ Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of InventionOne Size Fits All ... CD
Ryko, 1975. Used ... $5.99
Frank Zappa's got some fantastic fusion touches on this sweet little set from the 70s – thanks to keyboards and a bit of vocals from George Duke, heavy drums from Chester Thompson, and even some brief help from Johnny Guitar Watson! The set's still got a very Zappa-esque feel, but it's clear he's also letting Duke stretch his wings a bit too as there's parts of the record that almost echo the style of some of George's more far-out recordings for MPS. The balance is great – and one that makes the album a lot more soulful at points than we're used to hearing from Zappa. Titles include "Florentine Pogen", "Can't Afford No Shoes", "Inca Roads", "Po-Jama People", "Evelyn A Modified Dog", and "San Ber'Dino". CD
(Out of print, in the original green tinted case which has a small cutout hole.)

✨✧ Freddie HubbardSplash ... LP
Fantasy, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Freddie Hubbard makes a sweet splash for the 80s in this great little set – one of his last electric outings before a return to more acoustic modes! The vibe's a bit leaner than some of his late 70s albums, with most of the electricity coming from the bass, and from the keyboards by Chester Thompson or Louis Small – but the record's definitely got that soaring sense of flow that Freddie brought to his best work of this nature – that new sound he unlocked during the 70s, which finally seemed to find the right voice for that mighty horn of his! Jeanne Tracy sings a bit of vocals on the set, bringing in a touch of soul to the album – and titles include the stepping classic "Touchdown" – plus "Splash", "Mystic Lady", "I'm Yours", "Jarri", "You're Gonna Lose Me", and "Sister Stine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)
