Miles Davis/Thelonious MonkMiles & Monk At Newport ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1958/1963. Used 2 CDs ... $3.99
A slightly misleading record – but a great one nonetheless! From the title and cover, you might imagine that Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis were sharing the stage together at the Newport Jazz Festival – but instead, the album actually features separate performances by each artist – actually even recorded 5 years apart! The Miles Davis recording is from 1958 – a great year that has John Coltrane working with the group, alongside Wynton Kelly on piano, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – performing lively versions of "Ah Leu Cha", "Straight No Chaser", "Fran Dance" and "Two Bass Hit". The Monk material is even more unique – recorded in 1963, with Monk's usual quartet of Charlie Rouse on tenor, Butch Warren on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums – joined by the legendary Pee Wee Russell on clarinet – recently revived in jazz at the time, and displaying surprisingly modernist tendencies! Both Monk tracks are long – and include versions of "Nutty" and "Blue Monk". CD

Steeplechase, 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Walt Dickerson and Sun Ra are reunited – after only playing together on the seminal 60s album Impressions Of A Patch Of Blue! The session's a very spare one, in the typical mode of Dickerson's Steeplechase work of the late 70s – and most titles have Dickerson taking the main lead on vibes, with Ra providing flourishes of color and tone to the tracks – unusually restrained, but in a way that also adds a whole new level to our understanding of his genius! Titles include "Space Dance", "Constructive Neutrons", "Astro", and "Utopia". CD

✨✧ Pierre DorgeSoundscapes ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Pierre Dorge has been giving us amazing music for many years – but he sounds especially amazing here in the company of a really great group – the excellent Kirk Knuffke on cornet, plus Stephen Riley on tenor, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Jay Anderson on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums – all very dynamic players who seem to make Dorge sound even fresher than ever! There's an especially strong sense of phrasing on the record – no surprise, especially with Knuffke in the mix – and while Pierre can sometimes use his instrument in more abstract ways, that quality is really balanced by all the other members of the lineup. Anderson's bass is great – nicely pointed at the best moments, and a great contrast to Dorge's strings – and all tracks are originals, with titles that include "Lullaby For Sun Ra", "Mingus' Birthday Party", "Afrikaa Mbizo Dyani", "Sim Sim Ba", and "Alligator In Paradise". Steeplechase (Denmark), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not a new version of Pierre Dorge's famous group, but a 30th anniversary celebration that shows the guitarist and ensemble to be as creative as ever! As with earlier efforts, the approach here is a very offbeat extrapolation of modern large ensemble modes from the generations of Ellington and Kenton – taken to very weird territory with Dorge's guitar in the lead, and with some very inventive use of familiar horns, plus keyboards and percussion. Tracks are mostly short, and titles include "Xongly", "Sankt Jakob", "Fur Kontrabas", "Balada Para El Trompetista", "Ratatata Lang Ra", and "Blessing Bones". CD

✨✧ Pierre Dorge & New Jungle OrchestraTjak Tjaka Tchicai ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pierre Dorge pays tribute to the late reedman John Tchicai – a frequent musical partner over the years, and a player who's shaped the sound of countless others on both sides of the Atlantic! Tchicai got his start with Archie Shepp on the New York scene of the 60s, but moved over to Denmark by the end of that decade – and ended up having a good deal of interaction with guitarist Pierre Dorge in years to come, including performances on some of the best sessions by the New Jungle Orchestra! This album really recalls those great ones – as Dorge chooses tunes that seem to have an especially spiritual flavor, and evoke Tchicai in ways that most of the group's recent work might not have – using especially strong passages from reed players who include Jakob Mygind on tenor and soprano, Anders Banke on tenor and bass clarinet, and Morten Carlson on tenor and taragot. Titles include "Mozombo", "A Rufous Mot Mot", "Jungle Sketches", "Autobahn Tchicai Zwei", "Lucianus In Congo", and "Tjak Tjaka Tchicai". CD

✨✧ Pierre Dorge & New Jungle OrchestraWhispering Elephants ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully creative work from Pierre Dorge and his New Jungle Orchestra – a set that often features gentle, sensitive musical moments – although always handled with the sort of offbeat style we've come to expect from Dorge! Pierre is at the head of the group on guitar, and other instrumentation includes tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, trombone, piano, and trumpets – plus some nice use of percussion to help underscore the Africanist leanings of the rhythms. Dorge composed the album as a celebration of the elephant – and you can definitely hear that focus in the way the horns come together – often with a joyous sort of feel that reminds us a bit of the rare use of saxes in the work of Dollar Brand. Titles include "Oda Eugenia", "A Night In Hong Kong", "Malam Lagu", "Sunday In Zurich", "Wedding Music", "To Mr Dolphy", "Malamin Jobarteh", "Moonlight In The Woods", and "From The Same Tribe". CD

Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's a really great pairing going on here – the always-amazing sound of Pierre Dorge's New Jungle Orchestra, and the tenor of Stephen Riley – a guest who's brought into the fold after a successful European tour with the group, and a perfect match for their ever-inventive sound! Dorge's guitar sets the scene and colors the music right from the start – with plenty of the blue elements you might expect in the title – and Riley seems as if he's challenging all the other group members to do their best with the strength of his own tenor – a lineup that includes Tobias Wiklund on trumpet, Kennet Agerlhom on trombone, Jakob Mygind on tenor and soprano, Anders Banke on tenor and bass clarinet, and Irene Becker on piano and keyboards. The tracks are mostly originals by Dorge, plus a few by Becker – and they've got that angular, shape-heavy vibe that marks the work of the NJO – on titles that include "Dancing In The Jungle", "Aburu Kuwa", "Mingus' Birthday Party", "Witchdoctor In The Burial Mound", "Fulani", and "Blue Afriki". Late 70s recordings of guitar and vibes duets from the forward looking percussionist Dickerson with Pierre Dorge. The compositons are all Dorge's and the playing is free, but restrained. 6 tunes in all, though 2 of them are fairly lengthy, with a few smaller vignettes as well: "Song For Irene", "Tribute To Master Tchicai", "Landscape With Open Door", "Mirjam's Blue Umbrella", "Boss Kodania", "Green Symmetry/Witches Weep & Dance" and "Tai Gong". Steeplechase (Denmark), 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Pierre Dorge in a really unusual setting – not his larger orchestra, but a great small group with drummer Hamid Drake – who really helps bring out a whole new side of Dorge's music! The spare setting of the record also features Kirk Knuffe on cornet and Thommy Andersson on bass – and the players have this airy, open way of interacting – which really allows us to hear all these great sounds on guitar from Dorge, often with ringing tones that match perfectly with the cornet – but also bowed at other times, with a sonorous approach we especially love. Drake is great, as always – extremely sensitive in his approach to the drums – and titles include 'Wulla Wussa", "Blui", "Danza Reptilla", "Cha Cha Lupa", "Xongly", "Else Belse Bird Beard", and "Happy As A Cow". ✨✧ Kenny DorhamShort Story ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great live work from Kenny Dorham – wonderfully recorded by Danish Radio from an early 60s performance in Copehagen – one that also features flugelhorn from Allan Botschinsky as well! The mix of trumpet and flugelhorn is totally great – a shifting, shimmering palette of colors and sound that steps right out with a bold, righteous energy – that sense of force that Dorham was beginning to show in some of his American recordings too – before his studio appearances were cut down all too quickly. Rhythms are extremely tight too – with Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and the tracks are nice and long, with versions of "Short Story", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Manha De Carnival", and "The Touch of Your Lips". Kenny Dorham in Scandinavia – playing on a set of extended live numbers that are all a fair bit different than his studio work in the US at the time! The date features twin trumpets, too – those of Dorham and Rolf Ericson, blowing together in a bold frontline, then breaking out for beautiful long solos that each have their own sort of voice – driven on nicely by rhythms from Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums! The recording quality is excellent, and there's a sharpness here that matches Dorham's hardbop best – but a freewheeling energy that really takes things even further. Key work as a leader from bassist Johnny Dyani – one of his most soulful, spiritual outings ever – and a record dedicated to the important South African political prisoner Stephen Biko! There's a sense of flow and rhythmic focus here that's wonderful – as Dyani comes together with a tremendous quartet that features Don Cherry on cornet, Dudu Pukwana on alto sax, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – players that are joined as one in meaning and message as they make their way through the original Dyani compositions on the set. The album features a wonderful extended tune, running for all of side two, entitled "Jo'Burg–New York" – a musical journey that's worth the price of the album alone – and the set also features a number of great shorter tunes that include "Wish You Sunshine", "Song For Biko", and "Confession of Moods" LP, Vinyl record album

CBS, 1975. New Copy ... $6.99 8.99
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid 70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – "Shining Star (future star)", "All About Love (first impressions)", "Happy Feelin (anatomy of a groove)", "Caribou Chaser (jazzy jam)", and "That's The Way Of The World (Latin expedition)". Gil EvansComplete Pacific Jazz Sessions (New Bottle Old Wine/Great Jazz Standards) ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1958/1959. Used ... $6.99
2 wonderful late 50s sessions from arranger Gil Evans – both of which we'd rank right up there with his best work with Miles Davis, or the albums under his own name for Impulse in the 60s! The first half of the CD is from the album New Bottle Old Wine – a record of swinging modern backdrops, used to showcase both the solo talents of a young Cannonball Adderley, and the dynamic energy of Evans himself! Cannon's sharp-edged early tone is a really great sound for the record – far more modern than you might expect from later funk and soul sides of the 60s – and perfectly poised next to Gil's larger back drops to reignite a host of older tunes with new energy! And while the titles are familiar, the readings certainly are not – as the Evans pen has really changed things up beautifully – as you'll hear on numbers that include "St Louis Blues", "King Porter Stomp", "Willow Tree", "Struttin' With Some Barbeque", "Lester Leaps In", "Round About Midnight", "Manteca", and "Bird Feathers". Great Jazz Standards is equally great, a fantastic lost set from Evans – and one that features Mingus trumpeter Johnny Coles as the lead soloist in front of Evans-led modern groups that include players like Elvin Jones, Ray Crawford, Steve Lacy, Budd Johnson, Rod Levitt, and Chuck Wayne. Despite the "standards" in the title, most of these numbers are modern tunes from the 50s – like "Joy Spring", "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men", "Django", "Straight No Chaser", and "Chant Of The Weed" – all given Evans' unique style of arrangement, tweaked up a few notches to give them a really edgey quality. Coles is clearly standing in for Miles here, but the format works well overall! CD features 15 tracks in all, including some newly-improved versions of a few tracks, correcting mistakes in the original records! CD

✨✧ Gil EvansGreat Jazz Standards ... CD
World Pacific, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic lost set from modernist genius Gil Evans – one that expands on some of the larger group territory he was exploring with Miles Davis at Columbia Records – but with an even hipper range of soloists overall! The lineup on the record is an all-star one – mostly top shelf players, not studio musicians – and the set has Evans making room in the arrangements for key solo performances by giants who include Johnny Coles on trumpet, Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Budd Johnson on tenor, Ray Crawford on guitar, and both Curtis Fuller and Jimmy Cleveland on trombones – all players who each bring some key moments of magic to the larger arrangements on the album. Evans himself plays piano, and drums are by Elvin Jones and Dennis Charles – which should give you an idea of the modernist inclinations in the music. And although the title says "standards", the tunes here are definitely on the hipper side of the jazz spectrum of the 50s, expanded with beautiful modern arrangements by Gil – on versions of "Joy Spring", "Ballad Of The Sad Young Men", "Django", "Straight No Chaser", and "Chant Of The Weed". An instant classic the day it was released – and a perfect blending of the group's older freaked-out style with a slick late 70s funk sound that started showing up in the work of many other groups. "One Nation Under A Groove" is a monster cut with a hook that won't quit, and the LP version runs way over 7 minutes long. Other tracks are equally great, and the whole thing's woven together with the same sort of skill as some of the best Parliament albums from the mid 70s. Tracks include "Into You", "Grooveallegiance", and "Cholly". A wonderfully groovy soundtrack – one we'd never heard before, and a set that's filled with great little numbers in a range of different styles! The main theme is filled with percussion – really hard-driving drums that are chased by this echoey piano bit that's totally cool, and very unique! Some other sweet tracks have a gentle bossa-styled groove – including one with wordless vocals from Edda Dell'Orso – and other numbers have a different vibe, one that's a bit gentler, and almost sentimental at times, but pretty great too. There's also a few cuts that are more stark and moody – a bit towards Morricone horror fare, but not entirely – and the reissue features a whopping 27 tracks in all, most of which are short, compelling numbers! Red GarlandSwingin On The Korner – Live At Keystone Korner ... CD
Resonance, 1977. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
Never-heard music from pianist Red Garland – working here with a unique trio that features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a lineup that only existed for this one set of performances from 1977! The material is great – maybe better than most Garland albums issued at the time – and the tracks were recorded with great care at the Keystone Korner club in San Francisco – at a level that's similar to the best Fantasy Records live dates from the venue, which were often like this album – a great chance for the artist to really stretch out and do something new! Garland still has that fluid, lyrical sensibility we love in his famous 50s sides – but there's also a much richer, more sophisticated approach to the piano as well – an even deeper sense of tonal color that comes through on the album's long tracks. Jones is great too – increasingly complex during these years, as you'd hear on his own recordings – and a great accompaniment to Red's new modes of expression. The whole thing presents 150 minutes of unreleased music, plus some great notes and photos too – and titles include "Love For Sale", "Billy Boy", "Blues In Bebop", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Dear Old Stockholm", "Bag's Groove", "On A Clear Day", "Straight No Chaser", "Autumn Leaves", and even a version of "The Christmas Song" (since the material was recorded a few weeks before Christmas!) Steeplechase (Denmark), 1960. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
American bassist Oscar Pettiford left our planet on the other side of the Atlantic – after just a few years of making some big waves on the European scene, where this tribute to his genius was recorded in 1960! The material here appears for the first time – and the bulk of the set features tremendous performances from very hip European groups who were following in the legacy of modern jazz that Pettiford and some of his generation helped unlock on the scene. The set begins with a trio that includes pianist Finn Savery and bassist Erik Moseholm, on titles that include "Bohemia After Dark" and "Willow Weep For Me". Baritone saxophonist Max Bruel leads a quartet through a reading of his own "Blues For Oscar" – followed by four tracks from the trio of pianist Bengt Hallberg, one with vocals from Alice Babs – titles that include "Blues By Alice" and "Dinah". Next is the legendary Jazz Quintet 60 – with Allan Botschinsky on trumpet, Bent Jaedig on tenor, and Bent Axen on piano – doing their renditions of Pettiford tunes "Why Not That's What" and "Blues In The Closet". Vibist Louis Hjulmand follows in a quartet with pianist Finn Savery on the Pettiford tune "Now See How You Are" – then the great Stan Getz comes in to finish things off in a quartet with Bengt Hallberg's trio – serving up takes of "Without A Song", "Get Happy", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", and "Nobody's Sweetheart". Verve, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums – and quite possibly our personal favorite! The record features beautifully understated arrangements by Joao Donato, Don Sebesky, and Claus Ogerman – and the instrumentation is a haunting mix of bossa rhythms with darker orchestrations that bring out an emotional side of Astrud that you don't always get on other LPs. The track list is excellent, and includes some of her best tracks for Verve, like "Gentle Rain", "Non Stop To Brazil", "Fly Me To The Moon", "O Ganso", and "Aruanda". Not to be passed up, and one that we never tire of listening to! LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre/Gene KrupaJimmy Giuffre Trio/Gene Krupa Quartet In Concert ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1959. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Two very different groups – both presented in unissued performances recorded on the same day in Copenhagen during the spring of 1959! First up is the Jimmy Giuffre trio with some tremendous guitar from Jim Hall – a key player who really helped Jimmy find that airy, open approach on his Atlantic Records gems at the end of the 50s – working here with just the bass of Buddy Clark for accompaniment. Giuffre mostly plays modern clarinet, in that famous style of his, but also handles a bit of tenor – on titles that include "Time Machine", "Careful", "The Little Melody", and "Song Of The Wind". And speaking of clarinet, that instrument gets a nice workout on the Gene Krupa tracks – as does tenor and flute, all handled by Ed Wasserman – who plays in a Krupa quartet that also includes Ronnie Ball on piano and Jimmy Gannon on bass. The music has that open, lively small combo vibe that marked some of Gene's best 50s sessions for Verve – and titles include long takes on "Undecided" and "Flamingo" – plus a 25 minute reading of "Sing Sing Sing". Steeplechase (Denmark), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lost genius from Dexter Gordon's initial years in Europe – a set that has him still stretching out in familiar Scandinavian modes, but with a slightly tighter sound too! The group's notable in that it features trumpeter Rolf Ericson – whose horn really adds a lot to the frontline, and has a surprisingly strong talent for matching Gordon's beautifully-blown longform solo modes! Rhythm is from the trio of Lars Sjosten on piano, Sture Nordin on bass, and Per Hulten on drums – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "Darn That Dream", "Straight No Chaser",and "I Remember You". Steeplechase (Denmark), 1974. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A standout 70s set from Dexter Gordon – one that's a bit tighter than some of his longer-blown dates from overseas – and which almost sparkles with the same power as his 60s albums on Blue Note! The group here is nice and tight – with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all grooving in a style that's sharply focused, and which really sets the stage for Dex's wonderful tone on the solos. Pedersen's bass is great too – sometimes stepping out with a presence not usually heard on a set like this – and titles include the Gordon originals "The Apartment", "Antabus", and "Candlelight Lady" – plus "Wee Dot" and "Old Folks". Rock-solid overseas work from the mighty Dexter Gordon – a studio set instead of one of his live dates from the Danish scene of the time – and a record that seems to have Dex coming across with even more focus and power than ever! The tracks are long, and his solos have this wonderful bite – driven strongly by work from Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all moving sharply and tightly, with maybe an especially sharp crackle in the drums of Higgins, which really seems to energize even the mellower numbers! A stunning slice of work from the mighty Dexter Gordon – material recorded in the Netherlands, at a time when Dex was really expanding his talents on that scene! The work here is unreleased, but follows the format of some of his killer albums on the Steeplechase label – a live performance, with Gordon really stretching out on some incredible solos that are filled with fire and imagination– with backing from a Dutch trio that features Rein DeGraaff on piano, Henk Haverhoek on bass, and Eric Ineke on drums. Rein is great – and has the full sense of soul that Kenny Drew brought to some of his recordings with Gordon on the scene – but the real star is the man himself, stretching out beautifully on long versions of "Fried Bananas", "The Panther", and "Body & Soul". Important early European work by Dexter Gordon – recorded during his successful 60s run at the legendary Cafe Montmartre, where using the new freedoms of that scene, he re-invented himself as a player, and gave a much needed boost to European-American jazz relations! The tracks on the set are all very much in the best spirit of Gordon's Montmartre years – long and open-ended, with a real focus on the tenor solo work, but also some excellent support by a rhythm trio that includes Kenny Drew, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and Alex Riel. ✨✧ Dexter Gordon & Benny BaileyRound Midnight ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not the soundtrack to Dexter Gordon's big film appearance in the 80s – but a smoking little live date recorded with trumpeter Benny Bailey in the mid 70s! At the time, both Bailey and Gordon were key players on the European scene – both Americans living abroad, really stretching out and exploring new ideas in front of receptive overseas audiences – so their pairing together here makes perfect sense, even if the meeting is slightly unusual! Bailey's horn is one we never fail to love – and his imaginative trumpet lines on the record really push the proceedings past the usual Dexter Gordon overseas set – adding in a bit more structure, and a bit more punch – and sometimes meeting Dex nicely with some line-trading upfront. Plus, Bailey also contributed the hippest tune to the record – "Neptunus", which is done here in a smoking 20 minute reading! Other cuts include "What's New", "Blue N Boogie", "Round Midnight", and "Stella By Starlight" – and the set also features Lars Sjosten on piano, Torbjorn Hultcrantz on bass, and Jual Curtis on drums. Fantastic work from a really wonderful trio – a group with a sense of space and scope that's completely sublime! We've always loved the piano work of Masabumi Kikuchi, but here he really has this special energy next to the basswork of Gary Peacock – a player who somehow always feels a bit different when he's in a Japanese setting than a more familiar one – a perfect match for the percussion of Masahiko Togashi, who is maybe the freest player on the record at times – and working with that very open, sensitive way he has of handling a drum kit! The recording quality is amazing – all the different elements both separate and together at once – and the whole thing is a real lost treasure from the time, superbly recorded and done with a very timeless quality. This 4CD set brings together everything recorded during these wonderful sessions – some quite long – and titles include "Song In D", "Carla", "Little Abi", "Rambling", "Straight No Chaser", "Moor", "Good Bye", "Peace", "Nature Boy", "Tennessee Waltz", "My Favorite Things", "Summertime", "Begin The Beguine", "Waltz Step", and "Bley's Triad". Really great material from tenor legend Johnny Griffin – maybe one of his best records of the 70s, and certainly one that shows that his early genius was alive and well – and really able to flourish in a setting like this! The tracks are long and open – in a mode that's similar to Dexter Gordon's work on Steeplechase at the time, but maybe with a bit more of a punch – that south side soul that Griffin always had in his horn, which also seems to bring more out of the rhythm group too – a trio that features Kenny Drew on piano, Mads Vinding on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. A fantastic album by Slide Hampton – one of his best, and one of his rarest! Like a number of other important players of his generation, Slide got his start on the American scene, but moved to Europe during the 1960s – where he really began to open up. This excellent session was recorded in Paris in 1962, and it features Slide leading an octet through some of the most complicated arrangements of his early years. Players include some great underground American players, like trumpeter Richard Williams, bassist Butch Warren, tenorist George Coleman, and trombonist Benjamin Jacobs-El, whose frequent co-tromboning with Hampton always made for an excellent sound. As on Slide's Atlantic sides, the group swings like a mofo – staying tight on the choruses, but really breaking out from the pack with some amazing solo work. There's a beautifully resonant tone to the album – as the guitar work of John Hart mixes in this really fresh way with the Hammond of Brian Charette and tenor of Rich Perry – as all three players take the whole thing in directions that are very far from traditional organ and tenor records from back in the day! Hart's a guitarist with a masterful sense of color, and he uses that sense in all these great ways – often matching the tones and timings of Perry, as the pair shimmer next to Charette's work on the keys and pedals, as the proceedings are punctuated by nicely subtle work on drums from Steve Johns – a player who clearly doesn't want to get too much in the way of the balance of color and tone. The darkly brooding image of Hampton Hawes on the front cover of this one is a real standout in the mostly-sweet cover lineup of the Contemporary label – but it's also a great indication of the sound of the record, which is something different than most of its contemporaries! Hawes is working here at his top-shelf early best – stepping around the keys of the piano with a sense of grace and spaciousness – but also a hard-hitting, highly rhythmic mode on the left – a bit soul jazz at times, mixing earthy elements with the sweeter, lyrical moments in his solos. Rhythm is by the team of Red Mitchell and Chuck Thompson – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Blues For Jacque", Stella By Starlight", "Steeplechase", "Round Midnight", "Autumn In New York" and "Section Blues". Wonderful later work from Jimmy Heath – a gently soulful album that captures all the best aspects of his 70s work! The group on the set is a quartet – with Heath on tenor, Tony Purrone on guitar, Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – and tunes are open, warm, and played with a gentle approach that's never trying too hard – but which somehow manages to go into all these hidden corners that we wouldn't expect. The mix of tenor and guitar, without piano, is especially nice – and the album features many great Heath tunes – like "The Quota", "Rio Dawn", "Ballad From Upper Neighbors Suite", and You Or Me" – as well as great versions of Duke Pearson's "Is That So" and Blue Mitchell's "Fungii Mama". Warm and wonderful work from saxophonist Jimmy Heath – still sounding great here in the 90s, and working in an excellent format that places his tenor and soprano next to guitar, bass, and drums. The lack of piano is quite striking – and the guitar work of Tony Perrone freely steps around Heath's horn with a quality that's really nice – teaming up in a frontline style, as if he were a trumpet player in the group – but also letting back for a more rhythmic approach that also has him shading in certain aspects of the tunes. Drums are by Heath's brother and longtime partner Albert "Tootie" – and titles include "Prince Albert", "Basic Birks", "Sleeves", and "Soul Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Buck HillImpressions ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by tenorist Buck Hill – a local player on the DC scene, and one who hardly ever got his due on record! We'd rank Buck right up there with Von Freeman – another local player who spent years honing his tenor sound in a local setting, yet who never got the right sort of fame because he kept away from the New York or LA scenes. And here, Hill's got an incredibly timeless sound in his horn – really deep, beautiful, and undeniably soulful – a sense of raspy tone that goes back to Lester Young or Ben Webster, but a freer, more open sense of swing too – brought out nicely by rhythm work from Reuben Brown on piano, Wilbur Little on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. This set features the second half of a great live European performance from 1981 – with titles that include "Alone Together", "Impressions", and "Penn Station". CD

Johnny HodgesJohnny Hodges Septet In Concert – Copenhagen, March 17, 1961 ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1961. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Rare small group work from the great Johnny Hodges – an unissued live set from the start of the 60s, and one that has Johnny working with key Ellington sidemen in a very Ellington-like setting! Solo Hodges could usually take one of two forms – more soulful small group material that has less of the arrangements of his longtime leader, the Duke – and more Ellington-based performances, of which this set is definitely one – as Hodges leads a hip combo with Ray Nance on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Harry Carney on baritone, Al Williams on piano, Aaron Bell on bass, and Sam Woodyard on drums. Tunes are almost all numbers by Ellington or Billy Strayhorn, but done in a nice lean style, with key solo performances throughout – and titles include "Rocking In Rhythm", "Jeep Is Jumpin", "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Sophisticated Lady", "Mood Indigo", and "Solitude" – plus "Good Queen Bess", "Perdido", and "Autumn Leaves". The sound quality is great – very clear, with a nicely crisp tone on the horn parts, especially Hodges and Carney! CD

✨✧ Lynn HopeTenderly (Score pressing) ... LP
Score, 1957. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A full LP that appears to collect earlier sides recorded by saxophone genius Lynn Hope – presumably for the Aladdin label, and all featuring that lusty tenor sound that was his trademark during the 50s. Hope's tone alone is reason enough to purchase the record – as the album's 12 late nite dreamers are all lovely little tunes that will have you putting the disc at the top of your "after midnite" tenor play pile. Production is nice and echoey, and the whole thing's very moody. Titles include "Summertime", "Tenderly", "Blues For Anna Bacoa", "Blue Moon", "September Song", "Blow Lynn Blow", "Driftin", and "Move It". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono maroon label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear, yellowing from age, and a split top seam and spine.)

✨✧ Charlie Hunter TrioBing Bing Bing (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1995. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The Blue Note debut of guitarist Charlie Hunter – a set that introduced Hunter's talents on the strings to a much larger audience at the time – and one that also really helped Blue Note get back into the business of funky jazz! The approach is nice and lean – a core trio with Dave Ellis on tenor and Jay Lane on drums – and at times, Hunter has a way of handling his guitar almost like an organ, which is a testament to his fresh approach to the instrument – a quality that continues even when a few moments feature some guest trombone or clarinet. Titles include a famous cover of "Come As You Are", plus the tracks "Bullethead", "Scrabbling For Purchase", "Fistful Of Haggis", "Greasy Granny", and "Elbo Room". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ImpressionsImpressions (1963) ... LP
ABC, 1963. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic soul from the Chicago scene of the 60s – the legendary first ABC album by Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions! Although the group first broke big on Vee Jay Records, it was at ABC that their genius really took flight – tightening up the harmonies of the earlier singles, and hitting a mode that was a lot more soul than the doo wop of their roots! The sound here is a great bridge between the two eras of the group's career – and a number of the best tracks here are done in a mellow, gentle sort of way that relies heavily on the harmonies – crackling out with beautifully human sounds throughout. Nearly every tune is an original by Curtis Mayfield – and there's not a spot of filler on the album! Titles include "Minstrel & Queen", "Gypsy Woman", "Never Let Me Go", "It's All Right", "Sad Sad Girl & Boy", "Little Young Lover", "Can't You See", and "I Need Your Love". Nice cover, too – with Curtis smiling the biggest ol' bucktoothed smile you'll ever see! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing with Bell Sound stamp – with "It's Alright" instead of "Can't You See". Back cover has the original purchase date in light pen – 7/21/66.)

✨✧ ImpressionsKeep On Pushing ... LP
ABC, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
There's no need for The Impressions to push from behind – because with a record like this, they're very firmly in the driver's seat! The album's a treasure through and through – one of the greatest documents of 60s soul from the Chicago scene – filled with sublime original compositions by a young Curtis Mayfield, set to great arrangements from the legendary Johnny Pate! The sound here is immaculate – a groove that's slightly stepping, gently lilting – just enough to get things moving, but with plenty of care not to smother the fragile harmonies of the group. And as on other of the best ABC albums by The Impressions, there's not a hint of filler here – just one great track after another, with titles that include "Amen", "I Made A Mistake", "Don't Let It Hide", "Keep On Pushing", "Somebody Help Me", "Long Long Winter", and "I've Been Trying". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing – a nice copy! Back cover has a small note about the original purchase date – 4/27/1965 – next to a small name stamp.)

David JanewayInterchange ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1993. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
An unissued session from pianist David Janeway, done at a time when he was really hitting his stride – moving across the keys of the piano with this intuitive sense of feeling that makes for a very special record! The quality is a bit hard to describe, but if you've heard other Janeway sessions from the 90s, you'll know what we mean – a lyrical swing that's never sleepy or sloppy, and which always seems to sparkle with these fresh combinations of notes, yet never in a way that's trying too hard, or seems forced! The rhythm work of Harvie S on bass and Steve Johns on drums is a perfect complement to Janeway's piano – and on one track, they're joined by Pete Yellin on alto, for a great reading of "Invitation". Other titles include "Last Embrace", "Very Early", "Interchange", "Who Cares", "Return", and "Yours Is My Heart Alone". CD

Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnetteBye Bye Blackbird ... CD
ECM, 1993. Used ... $6.99
A fond farewell to Miles Davis – played here by a hip trio that features Keith Jarrett on piano, Gary Pecock on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums! A few of the numbers are ones that Davis recorded famously in years past, and a few others are originals – played by the trio in ways that are hardly Davis-like, but which certainly draw from the rich legacy of music he created. Rather than a Miles soundalike record, consider this one as a musical poem to the (then) recently departed great one – a beautiful set of music, with titles that include "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Blackbird Bye Bye", "You Won't Forget Me", "Summer Night", "For Miles", and "Straight No Chaser". ✨✧ Sam JonesVisitation ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the strongest statements ever recorded by bassist Sam Jones – a wickedly soulful session that cooks on all burners! The album's got a rich depth that far surpasses most of Jones' trio sessions – and is a full quintet album, with Terumasa Hino on cornet, Bob Berg on tenor, Ronnie Matthews on piano, and Al Foster on drums. Matthews' strong and soulful lines really push the whole group along – stretching out with modal energy that really seems to set the horns free. All tracks are extremely fresh, and played at a level that brings out the best we'd expect from the players – possibly more in fact – and the record's an under-appreciated gem in the Steeplechase catalog of the 70s! Titles include "Del Sasser", "Visitation", "Occurrence", "Jean Marie", and "Before You". CD also features 3 bonus alternate takes! CD

✨✧ Clifford JordanClifford Jordan & The Magic Triangle On Stage Vol 3 ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from Clifford Jordan – far better than the usual Steeplechase session of the time! The vibe here is similar to Jordan's work at the time on the Strata East label – played in a very similar group, with Cedar Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – way more than just a standard rhythm section, and with Jordan in tow, a compelling quartet with a really unique sound! There's a great depth to the work here – hardly the American soloist taking up space that you might get on other European live dates from the period – and the tracks are long, with an angular soul jazz finish. Both Jordan and Walton get plenty of room for expression – and titles on this third volume include "Seven Minds", "Shoulders", "St Thomas", and "Bleecker Street Theme". CD

Kirk KnuffkeCherryco (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2017. New Copy ... $27.99 34.99
A beautifully unique take on the music of Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman – served up here by a trio that features Kirk Knuffke on cornet, Jay Anderson on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums! The tunes are all classic Cherry or Coleman compositions – but the performance here is very different, with a robust quality that comes not just from the deeper range of the cornet, but also from the bold work on drum and bass – which still keeps things in that rompingly rhythmic mode of the group that Cherry and Coleman had together, but maybe both a bit more open in terms of the groove – and more focused on the one lead solo instrument. Knuffke's really opened up the sound of others in the past – but this record might well be his greatest achievement so far – as you'll hear on titles that include "Roland Alphonso", "The Sphinx", "Jayne", "Song In D", "Mind & Time", "Cherryco", "Golden Heart", "Paris Ambulance Song", and "Angel Voice".
