Barney KesselSwingin' Party At Contemporary ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1960. Used ... $8.99
A tight little set from Barney Kessel – recorded in 1960 at a back room studio at Contemporary with a small live audience! Kessel and his guitar are joined by Marvin Jenkins on piano and flute, Gary Peacock on bass and Ron Lundberg on drums – and the feel is easily swinging, in that mode that had Kessel opening up his playing a lot as the 60s approached. The album contains six songs including Milt Jackson's "Bluesology", Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring", Charlie Parker's "Now's The Time", Ahmad Jamal's "New Rhumba", Marvin Jenkin's "Miss Memphis", as well the standard "Lover Man". VariousLa Noire Vol 4 – Glory Is Coming ... LP
Doghouse & Bone (France), 1960s. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
A bit of a departure in the soul roots-digging La Noire compilation series – taking a turns towards early 60s gospel soul on this volume – with rollickingly soulful, spiritually resonant singles by Madame Nellie Robinson, The Pilgrim Travelers, Marie Knight, Reverend Charlie Jackson, The Gospelaires and more! It's wonderful stuff, released as 45s back then on Savoy, Nashboro, Booker, Peacock and other labels. They've got the raw rhythms of the best independent rootsy soul of the period, paired with passionate lead and glorious harmony vocals – great stuff all the way. 14 tunes in all, including "Mini-Your-Dress is Too Short" by Madame Nellie Robinson, "I Can See So Much" by Reverend Cleophus Robinson, "Take Me By The Hand" by Ray Crume, "Who Rolled The Stone Away" by Marie Knight, "Glory Is Coming" by Sunset Travelers, "Morning Train" by Reverend Charlie Jackson and more.
