Don Cherry gave many wonderful musical performances on the European scene in the 70s, including this one – a gem of a record that was thought to be lost for years, and finally gets released to the world at large! The set's a live collaboration with electronic musician Jean Schwarz – whose contributions here are nicely subtle, and never challenge the acoustic energy of the session, but instead augment it in all these really cool, unique ways – very different than most improvised music with electronics at the time. Cherry plays pocket trumpet and some great doussn gouni – in the company of an equally fantastic lineup that features JF Jenny Clark on bass, Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, and Michel Portal on saxes, bass clarinet, and bandoneon. Given all the elements, there's some very unique sounds going on here – a really amazing record that includes the tracks "Bells One", "Doussn Gouni", "Tribute To Ornette", "Bando", and "Berimbau". A surprisingly strong collection of country cuts from a very unusual scene – material recorded for the tiny Cuca Records label in Wisconsin – a company who was more likely to open their doors to just about anyone, than they were to carefully pick who got to record in their studio! Yet because of that approach, Cuca was able to capture some fantastic sounds that would have otherwise been lost to more commercial concerns – music that here represents an underground of country singers and late rockabilly acts from the scene in southern Wisconsin – all artists with the kind of twang and subject matter you'd be much more likely to discover down in Tennessee! The world of girl groups might seem cliched to some – but if you know where to look, you'll find a host of really amazing material – and that's definitely the case in this well-chosen set, a superb Ace Records package that's overflowing with material that goes way past the obvious! At some level, Ace are approaching the style in the reverse way of more mainstream collections – not starting with hits, then trickling down to obscurities – and instead pulling together unusual bits from a variety of indie labels that might have gotten otherwise overlooked, including a few cuts that were never issued at the time, mixed here with rock and soul gems from singles on labels like Keetch, Challenge, Bang, Mira, and Etiquette. Japanese jazz musician Yuji Ohno is best known for his soundtrack work for the long-running Lupin The Third, but during the 70s he also opened up his talents on a whole host of different ways – mixing familiar jazz funk scoring styles of the time with maybe a more offbeat approach to the overall soundtrack – so that there's sometimes a nice shift between different moods from tune to tune, and a vibe that's a cool change from American work of the period! This set is definitely one of Ohno's best from the time, and is filled with lots of Fender Rhodes, plus flute, vibes, sax solos, and other jazzy elements – balanced with larger arrangements that never overwhelm too much, and which are maybe in that late 70s style of some of the Creed Taylor work for Kudu Records! A legendary meeting of free jazz talents – and one of those records that completely changed the game during the 70s! Both guitarist Derek Bailey and drummer Han Bennink work here at a level that seems completely divorced from American roots in jazz – about as strongly in the post-68 freedoms of the European scene as possible – with both musicians opening up an incredible range of sonic elements on their instruments! And while the sometimes-bold drum work of Bennink might be seen as a challenge to the more intricate guitar sounds of Bailey, both players really find a way to work together perfectly – which also makes the record a key illustration of that spontaneous understanding that can arise between the best of the free jazz scene. A once obscure Jackson 5 album – one that hails from 1979, but which features work from the early 70s – tracks recorded during the glory years of the group's best Motown era, seven of which were unissued at the time! The style is very different than the late 70s Jacksons material on Philly International – with some great elements that really expand past the three hits that are included – into deeper soul modes that show the group always willing to take on new challenges. Fantastic work from Abiodun Oyewole – best known as one of the founding members of the legendary Last Poets – but a singer who works here with a contemporary crispness that goes way beyond his roots! The message in Abiodun's older recordings is still alive and well here – in part because the challenges continue, making his themes more important now than ever – updated with elements taken from 21st century soul, jazz, and even a bit of hip hop on the production tip – with contributions from other artists who include Ada De Poet, J Ivy, Jessica Care Moore, and Taylor Pace. Yet it's clear that Abiodun is the star at the center of the constellation – really sounding as important here as ever, at a level that maybe makes this record so much more crucial than some of the Last Poets revival projects of years past.
