Cecil TaylorIndent ... LP
Arista, 1973/1977. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A beautiful solo piano set by Cecil Taylor – recorded live in Ohio in 1973, and originally released on his own small Unit Core label. The work is a perfect example of how Cecil was stretching himself at the time – working in a mode that was part free jazz, part 70s spiritualism, opening up far more than even in his classic group recordings of the late 60s. The album features one long work – "Indent" – separated into 3 "layers". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has light sleeve marks. Cover has light wear, with a touch of waviness at the bottom corners.)

Cecil TaylorNefertiti The Beautiful One Has Come (Live At The Cafe Montmartre) ... LP
Arista/Freedom, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Excellent Artista/Freedom reissue that brings together the full set from Cecil's 1962 performance at Cafe Monmartre. He's playing here in a trio that has Jimmy Lyons on alto and Sonny Murray on drums, and the music's a key link between his later seventies stuff, and his earlier work that you can find on OJC reissues. The set has 2 takes of "Lena", plus "Trance", "What's New?", "Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come", and "D Trad, That's What". With great liner notres, too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring & edge wear, with a bit of waviness at the bottom half.)

Cecil TaylorUnit Structures ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. Good ... $19.99
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono New York pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. NOTE – Vinyl has a dent and will skip on the first track, but the rest is vg+ – Cover has light wear, tiny spot of pen.)

✨✧ Cecil TaylorCecil Taylor Solo ... LP
Trio (Japan), 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Cecil Taylor – a Japanese album that captures the pianist at the peak of his power – when he was breaking through into this amazing new territory in improvised music, with energy and dexterity that's completely unlike anyone else! Taylor in the 60s was great, but Taylor in the 70s – especially here – is mindblowing – as he attacks the piano with this reach and sense of imagination that would have blown away any of the big cockrock guitar heroes of the decade – all with a style that might sound like chaos at first listen, but which has this incredible understanding of notes, sounds, and colors – all effortlessly cascading from Cecil's fingers throughout! The album was recorded live in Lino Hall, Tokyo, at 2 in the morning – and titles include "Lono", "Choral Of Voice (Elesion)", "First Layer", and "Asapk In Ame". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Japanese pressing – PA-7067 – with insert. Cover has some light aging, but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Cecil TaylorLive At The Cafe Montmartre (Fantasy) ... LP
Fantasy, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Seminal material from Cecil Taylor – an explosive album that was one of the first to show the world just how much his style had evolved since the late 50s! When Taylor first showed up on the scene, he was already a pianist that was going farther out than just about anyone – but by the time of this 1962 performance in Copenhagen, he'd really taken off – working in these massive flurries of keyboard intensity that were unlike anything anyone had ever heard before – the full-blown Taylor aesthetic that's endured for decades, set up perfectly here in a trio with some brilliantly bracing alto sax by Jimmy Lyons, and equally free work on drums by Sunny Murray! All tracks are long, and titles include "Trance", "Call", "Lena", and "D Trad That's What". LP, Vinyl record album
(60s blue label pressing. Cover has a stereo sticker in one corner - and is great overall!)

✨✧ Jackie McLean, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner & OthersOne Night With Blue Note Preserved Vol 2 ... LP
Blue Note, 1985. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A landmark concert from the mid 80s – one held to honor the resurrection of the Blue Note label, featuring a wealth of some of the best players for the label – from the 80s back to the 50s bebop years. This is the second of 4 LPs, issued both separately and in a box set format, and features a nicely snapping hard bop quintet on side one, with Jackie McLean, Woody Shaw, McCoy Tyner, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette running through "Sweet & Lovely", "Appointment In Ghana", "Passion Dance" and "Blues On The Corner". Side two shows two different sides of Blue Note, with Cecil Taylor appearing in a solo setting, performing the lengthy "Pontos Cantados" and the then contemporary Blue Note artist Bennie Wallace leading a Newk-inspired pianoless trio, with McBee and DeJohnette reprising their rhythm section role on "Broadside". ✨✧ Cecil TaylorAir – Featuring Archie Shepp ... LP
Candid, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp – two key modern figures of the 60s, working here together in a seminal session recorded at the start of the decade! The album's approach is definitely dictated by Taylor – as the tunes have a piano-driven quality that's quite different than most music Shepp would later record – although Archie still manages to get in plenty of great moments on tenor! You can really hear Cecil breaking out of his earlier sound on the record – stretching forth in some of the more freely expressive ways that would dominate later, yet never too free – almost with a hint of modern swing at some points. Other players include Buell Niedlinger on bass and either Sunny Murray or Dennis Charles on drums – and titles include "Air", "Eb", and "Port Of Call". LP, Vinyl record album

Enja, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Freewheeling Cecil Taylor – heard here solo, in his best 70s mode – recorded live in Austria in 1976, playing beautifully on a Bosendorfer Grand piano! Taylor works wonders with the instrument – giving it a pyrotechnic workout during the extended performance on the set – at a level that, whatever you might feel about his approach to jazz, really stands as a demonstration that, above anything else, Taylor has always been one hell of a pianist – able to handle the instrument in a way that's unlike anyone else! The album features one long track – "Air Above Mountains (Buildings Within)" – awash with light, colors, and life – all from the Taylor side of the spectrum! LP, Vinyl record album

A legendary live set from Cecil Taylor – originally only issued overseas, but a record that really helped cement his status as a groundbreaking improviser at the start of the 70s! The record is maybe one of the first times that Taylor was really able to break free on record – and hit the style that would become his standard for years to come – working here in an excellent quartet with Jimmy Lyons on alto, Sam Rivers on tenor and soprano, and Andrew Cyrille on drums! This volume includes "Second Act of A" part 1. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cecil TaylorWorld Of Cecil Taylor ... LP
Candid, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Cecil Taylor's first LP for the Candid label – and a landmark album that really lets him open up for the first time in years at a recording session! The album was cut at Nola's Penthouse in 1960, and the core group is Cecil's trio with Buell Neidlinger on bass and Dennis Charles on drums – but Archie Shepp joins the group on tenor on two tracks, "Air" and "Lazy Afternoon". The remaining three have a sound that's not always heard on other Taylor albums from the 60s – a bit bluesy, with playing that might be called a bit "straight", but which also shows Cecil's command of the jazz idiom in a mode that allows keen comparison with other players of his generation. Titles include "EB", "This Nearly Was Mine", and "Port Of Call". LP, Vinyl record album

Candid/Victor (Japan), 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Pretty well peak era material from pianist Cecil Taylor – doing his thing with incredible line up of jazz greats on a couple NYC dates from early 1961! A couple of the pieces here are pure magic – we're especially loving the bits where Cecil is kind of hitting the keys heavily, spurring the players from a comfortable, measured gait into something a bit more feral, but it never busts wide open, creating a dynamic tension. The cream of the crop are on board, including Clark Terry, Roswell Rudd, Steve Lacy, Archie Shepp and Billy Higgins. The numbers mostly run north of 8 minutes, for a nicely loose, lingering groove, and titles include "Jumpin' Punkins", "OP", "O Forgot" and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". ✨✧ Cecil TaylorLooking Ahead! ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Cecil Taylor's definitely Looking Ahead here – pushing jazz piano very strongly into the 60s with his modernist tones – yet still working with a bit more restraint than in the next decade! The style here is quite unusual – and almost more fresh than the Taylor sound of later years, which has been copped heavily by other players. Cecil's somewhat free here, but also still a bit structured – playing both in angular tones and these rapid riffs that kind of burst out quickly in bold streams of colors. Other members of the group are equally striking – and include the lesser-known Earl Griffiths on vibes, working with great tones next to Taylor's piano – plus Buell Neidlinger on bass and Dennis Charles on drums. Titles include "Luyah The Glorious Step", "African Violets", "Of What", "Wallering", "Toll", and "Excursion On a Wobbly Rail". LP, Vinyl record album

The album's an extended live performance, recorded at Montreux in 1974 – in an open, unbridled style that really shows the open spirit in Taylor's work at the time. Savoy, 1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
A really well done memorial to the (then) recently-departed Charlie Parker – cut with an unusual lineup that features Cecil Payne on baritone sax, Phil Woods on alto, and Frank Socolow on tenor – all working through long, laidback takes of 4 of Bird's best known compositions! There's a really relaxed feel to the record that's totally great – and the players aren't so much aping the sound of Charlie Parker's work, as they are working in the newer freedoms allows by it – stretching out in freely creative lines that never fail to please, and working here with a rhythm section that includes Duke Jordan on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The album was recorded live at the Five Spot – and titles include "Parker's Mood", "Steeplechase", "Buzzy", and "Scrapple From The Apple". A legendary album from a legendary moment in jazz – and one that's got a very unique lineup, given that the young tenor genius John Coltrane meets up here with the brilliant piano of Cecil Taylor! The pair were both very influential in the farther reaches of jazz, yet in very different ways – so working here together on this unique session really creates a special moment in jazz – as both musicians are an incredible force on record, and create a really strong sense of tension throughout. The rest of the group is great – Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Chuck Israels on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – an equally unique blend of talents brought together for the session – stretching out on long tracks that include "Shifting Down", "Double Clutching", and "Just Friends". Groundbreaking early work from drummer Milford Graves and pianist Don Pullen – a set of long, free improvisations that were originally issued on Graves' Self-Reliance Productions label! The music is even more striking than sounds from the time on the ESP label – and also really predates some of the freer work of this type from the European scene – as Graves is a monster on the drum kit and a range of percussion, reaching out with this scope of sound and deft command of his hands that's simply breathtaking – matched by energy from Pullen that really surpasses some of his later work too – almost Cecil Taylor-like vibes at points, mixed with other elements that are in a more familiar mode for the pianist. Two sides of very free piano from the great Masahiko Sato – an album of improvised genius, and surprising beauty as well! Playing solo on two side-long improvisations, Sato is very much in Cecil Taylor territory – yet he also delivers his performance with this inherent sense of lyricism – a very different, almost painterly way of presenting free jazz piano – in a style that's got the same sort of beautifully fluid feel as the image on the cover! A brilliant early album from pianist Aki Takase – already at the top of her game with an amazing command of the keyboard – a reach and sense of imagination that almost opens into the freewheeling territory of Cecil Taylor, but one that's also got a lot of room for gentler, more sensitive moments – which makes the balance of expression on the album a real delight! The tracks are all quite long, and there's some equally wonderful work on bass from Nobuyoshi Ino – a player whose thoughtful qualities really open up the piano, and also provide some soulful grounding for the record next to the drums of Takeo Moriyama. OTOroku (UK), 2020. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A fantastic meeting between pianist Pat Thomas and alto saxophonist Matana Roberts – recorded live in London, and showing an amazing sense of sympathy between the two improvisers – even though they're normally separated by the space of an ocean! Thomas has these really dark, moody tones on the piano at times – almost as if he's playing with a prepared version of the instrument, although we're guessing that he's showing more of a Cecil Taylor-like understanding of the full tonal possibilities of the piano – even though his approach is very different than Cecil. Matana has this crispy soulfulness and depth – almost as if she's bringing the best modern traditions on the alto into play with the richer currents of the tenor – with results that are breathtaking throughout! Elemental, 1995. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
A magical pairing of musicians – both of whom had come together in different formats, and who here showcase a great late meeting of their genius! The vibe is maybe similar to the Super Quartet that Lacy and Waldron were leading in the early 90s, but with a slightly different lineup – Mal on piano, Steve on soprano sax, Reggie Workman on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – a very deft, fluid quartet who are able to shift easily between the different modes of the set! The performance begins with a bit of a nod to Thelonious Monk – always a key influence on Lacy's sound, even at the start – but Waldron's also bringing plenty of his ideas in too, and things really open up once the music gets going – with especially strong flavors that come from the territory that both musicians developed overseas in the decades before this performance. Tracks are all very long – and titles include "Variation Of III", "Longing", "Monk's Dream", "What It Is", "Epistrophy", and the long medley "Snake Out/Variations On A Theme By Cecil Taylor". Williams' drumming here is incredibly fierce at points – almost at a Billy Cobham level – but he also shows the sensitivity to deeper sounds that he first brought into play during the 60s – and manages to mix an ear for fusion modes with some freer elements too – thanks to help from a lineup of players that includes Herbie Hancock and Brian Auger on keyboards, Cecil Taylor on piano, Jan Hammer on Fender Rhodes, Stanley Clarke on bass, Ton Scott on lyricon, and Ronnie Montrose on guitar. ✨✧ Gil Evans OrchestraInto The Hot ... LP
Impulse, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The harder of the two Gil Evans albums on Impulse to find, and the best – really far-reaching material that has Evans coming into contact with some of the hippest jazz players of his generation! The record's got three incredible tracks written by Cecil Taylor – a very bold move for Evans, given Taylor's strongly out reputation even at this point in his career – and possibly even more bold, given that Taylor's on the tracks playing piano, alongside players who include Archie Shepp, Jimmy Lyons, Sonny Murray, and Henry Grimes. The material's fantastic, and is a key part of Taylor's work at the time, and shows a very different setting for his piano – a bit of tension with the larger Evans group, in a way that's almost more compelling than his own early dates as a leader! Taylor titles include "Pots", "Bulbs", and "Mixed". The other tracks on the album were written by John Carisi, who wrote the classic "Israel" for Miles Davis' nine piece group in the late 40s – but who here contributes "Moon Taj", "Angkor Wat", and "Barry's Tune". Carisi's tracks are a bit more subdued, but no less wonderful – and arrangements are by Taylor and Carisi, of their own music, presented with the Evans modern touch. One of the first bold statements to come from Chicago's AACM underground of the 60s – a tremendous debut effort from the young Roscoe Mitchell! The album's got a "sense of the new" feel that's as gripping as anything recorded by ESP or Impulse around the same time – a rule-breaking, freely-creative approach to jazz that builds strongly off the changes already wrought by Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, and Archie Shepp! The format is somewhat like the Art Ensemble Of Chicago at times – with measured horn work from Mitchell on alto, clarinet, and recorder, Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Lester Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Lester Lashley on trombone (as well as a bit of cello). Some tracks – like the brilliant "Sound" – offer a slow-building exploration of tones and textures – while others, like the blues-joke "Little Suite", or the harmelodic "Ornette", show a wry sense of humor that would become a Chicago avant hallmark as the years went on! Blue Note, 1955. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Killer piano jazz, and some of the greatest modernist work ever recorded by Blue Note! Herbie Nichols deserves every bit of the rare fame he ever got – and it's only the paucity of his recordings that has kept him from achieving the status of Thelonious Monk or Cecil Taylor as an avant garde forefather – which makes this album a really key piece of a too-small jazz puzzle! Nichols is amazing throughout – bristling with new ideas, and a fresh approach to modern jazz that also transforms the presence of the other two members of the trio – Art Blakey on drums and Al McKibbon on bass, both of whom are clearly following Herbie's lead here. All titles are original – Nichols was a hell of a writer – and titles include "Third World", "Step Tempest", "Dance Line", "Blue Chopsticks", "Shuffle Montgomery", "Brass Rings", "Crisp Day", and "Amoeba's Dance". ✨✧ Jazz Composers OrchestraJazz Composers Orchestra (2LP Box Set) ... LP
JCOA, 1968. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... Out Of Stock
A seminal album – a late 60s classic meeting of the brain trust of the avant garde jazz scene in New York, recorded for the young JCOA label – and put forth as one of their early attempts to prove that musicians could be in charge of the means of production! Michael Mantler provided the core composition, and directs the group – but the lineup is a who's who of forces who'd record for ESP, Impulse, and other labels – with bold solos from Don Cherry on cornet, Gato Barbieri on tenor, Larry Coryell on guitar, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Cecil Taylor on piano, and Pharoah Sanders on tenor – in a larger lineup of players who also include Steve Marcus, Andrew Cyrille, Reggie Workman, Alan Silva, Carla Bley, Beaver Harris, Charles Davis, Robert Northern, Kent Carter, and many other key avant musicians! Titles include "Communications 8", "Communications 9", "Communications 10", and "Communications 11".' LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anja Lauvdal & Joakim HeiboAll My Clothes ... LP
Actions For Free Jazz (UK), 2022. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully dynamic set from pianist Anja Lauvdal – a player who seems to have a very different quality on every new track – sometimes as freewheeling and open as a Cecil Taylor-inspired musician, other times resonating with the sonic modernism of some of the 70s players who could swing, but with strange chord choices and a very elliptical sense of rhythm! Drummer Joakim Heibo turns out to be a perfect partner for the record – although throughout, it feels as if he's responding to Lauvdal – which should be no surprise, as her performance throughout is definitely the sort that would keep another musician on their toes. The album features four long tracks, all untitled. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herbie NicholsProphetic Herbie Nichols Vol 1 & 2 ... LP
Blue Note (Japan), 1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Valdo WilliamsNew Advanced Jazz ... LP
Savoy, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An obscure, but very moving session by this little-known pianist from the 60's. The session's one of the great avant ones that Savoy recorded during the decade, and like all of them, it's got a surprisingly powerful feel, despite the apparent disregard of the label for projects such as this at the time. Valdo Williams has a hypnotic approach to the piano that's unlike any of the other avant players we can think of from the period. At times, he's as free as Cecil Taylor, but he always manages to rope things back in, and then hit a groove that's a little more soulful. In a way, the album's a mix of free jazz and "new thing" playing, and it's a very unique piece of work from the period. Tracks are long, and include the titles "Desert Fox", "Move Faster", and "The Conqueror". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Yosuke YamashitaHot Menu – Live At The Newport Jazz Festival 79 ... LP
Frasco (Japan), 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A New York performance by the legendary pianist Yosuke Yamashita, but one that burns every bit as strongly as his famous albums from Japan – thanks in part to some really incredible work from Akira Sakata on alto and clarinet! There's few folks who could ever hope to match the Cecil Taylor-like energy of Yamashita on the piano, but Sakata always seems to rise to the challenge wonderfully – and with the drums of Shota Koyama along for the ride, the trio must have left the New York audience with their jaws on the floor – especially as most of the US had not been able to get access to Yosuke's records at the time. The set features three very long tracks – "Rabbit Dance", "Mina's Second Theme", and "Sunayama". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve LacyStraight Horn Of Steve Lacy (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Candid, 1960. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The only thing "straight" about Steve Lacy's horn is its shape – as the soprano sax here is used in some extremely inventive and modern ways, especially for the date of the session! We don't think we're going out on a limb to say Lacy is one of the foremost melodic improvisors of his time, and easily one of the most talented soprano players too – and his early date as a leader shows both his forward looking involvement with the avant garde (he'd played with Cecil Taylor just before this date and does a couple of his compositions here) and a career-long fascination with Thelonious Monk. Although the group here is piano-less – with Charles Davis on baritone sax, John Ore on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – there's a definite Monk-like edge to many of the numbers, carried off especially by the sharp turns in Lacy's horn! Titles include "Criss Cross", "Air", "Donna Lee", "Louise", "Played Twice", and "Introspection". LP, Vinyl record album
