Calibro 35CLBR35 Live From Space ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2016. New Copy ... $13.99
Calibro 35 have always had a soundtrack style to their music – but here, they seem to hit an even trippier, spacier version of the mode – playing an all-live, all-instrumental set that's bubbling over with loads of wonderful elements! Some tracks are still as funky as before, but others really show the group finding their own sort of bigger picture sound – writing and playing with complexity that allows for some nicely dark corners, while still keeping the overall sound nice and lively! The music's not in that retro-horror mode that some groups are using these days – and instead is more funk at the core, but with lots of cool electric inflections from keyboards that include an Eko Tiger, clavinet, and Korg microsynth – alongside more familiar guitar, sax, flute, trumpet, and trombone. Titles include "Across The 111th Sun", "Ungwana Bay Launch Complex", "An Asteroid Called Death", "Serenade For A Satellite", "A Fistful Of Lead", "Notte In Bovisa", "La Mala Ordina", and "Eurocrime". CD

Calibro 35Decade ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $16.99
Calibro 35 have grown a heck of a lot in the last ten years – from a group who already had a strong ear for vintage soundtrack and sound library funk – to one who've definitely brought a lot of their own ideas to the music too! The sound here is razor sharp and right on the money – excellent small combo funk – awash in riffing guitars, romping rhythms, and sweet keyboard lines on a variety of instruments – with occasional tenor or flute to round things out for good measure! The horns aren't as crucial here as with other funk groups – as these guys aim more for the vibe you'd hear from a more sophisticated ensemble, but with a lean style of presentation – and the tunes are all really great – with enough depth to feel classic, but lots of fresh flavors of their own. Titles include "Superstudio", "Faster Faster", "Ambienti", "Polymeri", "Modo", "Travelers", and "Archizoom". CD

Calibro 35Sogni Di Gloria ... CD
Tannen (Italy), 2014. Used ... $9.99
Calibro 35 move strongly into the world of actual soundtrack music – after a number of albums that had them taking on classic sounds of Italian cinema – and the result is a set that might well be one of the strongest the group has ever cut! The core small combo approach is still the group's calling card – tight drums, compelling guitar lines, and plenty of sweet organ and keyboards – but the tracks are maybe a bit shorter and more compact, which makes the whole thing work together even more strongly as a whole – a suite of grooves from a group who really know what they're doing. Titles include "La Visione D'Assieme", "La Partita", "Tema Malinconico", "Tema Dello Sbattezzato", "Come Un Valzer", "Notturno", "Il Tempo Che Non Ho Vissuto", and "Tema Malinconico (solo Rhodes)". Cinedelic (Italy), 2008. New Copy (reissue)... About February 1, 2018 (delayed)
A new combo, but one who really get the sound of older soundtracks right – particularly the late 60s/early 70s Italian generation that's inspired the name and artwork of this set! Instrumentation is nice and lean – keyboards, guitar, bass, and percussion – used more in the tight ways of a mod funk combo, but with strong soundtrack leanings in the tunes – no surprise, as the songs here are all pulled from vintage scores by Ennio Morricone, Luiz Bacalov, Armando Trovajoli, and others of the golden age of Italian soundtracks! And if you're suspicious about the sound, don't be – because these guys are totally great – no fake-retro moments, or overly programmed rhythms – just live instrumentation handled beautifully, in ways that bring something new to the tunes, but remain very faithful to their original inspiration. Titles include "Preludio", "Italia Amano Armata", "Titoli", "Notte In Bovisa", "Summertime Killer", "La Polizia S'Incazza", "Shake Balera", "Spiralys", and "Gangster Story". 18 tracks in all – more than the CD! ✨✧ Calibro 35Traditori Di Tutti (with bonus download) ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Damn! These guys just keep getting better and better with each new release – to the point where they're way more than just a combo dedicated to classic soundtrack modes – and instead have found a fuzzy funky space that's all their own! Both the instrumentation and rhythms are sharper than ever – very hard-hitting, on the rockier side of 70s sound library styles – and topped with some fierce guitar work that makes nearly every cut bristle with a newfound sense of power – matched by mighty sweet lines on keyboards that include Fender Rhodes, clavinet, mellotron, dulcitone, and eko tiger! Vocals are almost nonexistent – leaving the most room for instrumentals that ring out boldly – and titles include "You Filthy Bastards", "The Butcher's Bride", "Mescaline 6", "Stainless Steel", "Two Pills In The Pocket", and "Traitors". Shindig, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to the album Forever Changes by Love – 50 years old in 2018, and still one of the greatest records ever made on this planet! Other features look at Hawkwind, Ducks Deluxe, Monochrome Set, Rising Storm, The Mummies, and soundtrack funk group Calibro 35 – and there's also a cool article on Hippie Pulp Fiction, which looks at exploito-trash paperbacks of the 60s! There's lots more too – plenty of reviews, shorter features, and other nice bits too. Magazine
