✨✧ Eric DolphyIron Man (painted cover) ... LP
Douglas, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A seminal set from Eric Dolphy – one of his most perfectly realized moments at the head of a larger ensemble – and a record that definitely set the tone for countless spiritual jazz sessions of the 70s! Dolphy recorded this session for Alan Douglas in 1962, and it features a larger array of players than you'll find on most of his records for other labels – the cream of the "new thing" players that were around New York at the time, including Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, and even Clifford Jordan on soprano sax – making a rare appearance on record on that instrument! Together, the players create a set of soundscapes that lies somewhere between Dolphy's Out To Lunch album, and some of the more modernist work by Mingus – a stunning batch of tracks that go out, but never too far. Titles include "Ode to CP", "Burning Spear", "Iron Man", and "Mandrake". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John Lee & Gerry BrownStill Can't Say Enough ... LP
Blue Note, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Great work from John Lee and Gerry Brown – a pair of fusion stalwarts who added key help to a number of classic 70s sessions for other artists – and got to make a rare few albums like this on their own! Lee's on bass and Brown's on drums, and the pair are in perfect time throughout – working with Skip Drinkwater production, which helps them find even more focus than before, and shake off some of the more jamming aspects of their rock-fusion performances with others – a move that helps them come up with a wonderfully soulful sound in the process – very much in the best Drinkwater soul jazz style of the time! Some cuts have vocals that get nice and soulful – from Donald Smith, CP Alexander, and Tawatha Agee – and titles include the brilliant "Love The Way You Make Me Feel" – plus "Freeze It Up", "Breakin", "Rise On", "Funky Now", "Strut N Get Up", and "Down The Way". ✨✧ Clyde McPhatterLove Ballads ... LP
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good ... $29.99
A great album of mellower ballads that showcase Clyde McPhatter's richly emotional style of singing, one that's on a par with his lead vocal work in The Drifters, and recorded here in a very similar mode! And sure, they're ballads – but they've got a great deep soul edge – as you'll hear on titles that include "Heartaches", "Come What May", Love Has Joined Us Together", and "Let Me Know". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red and purple label pressing – nice and clean. Cover has a small cutout hole, but is nice too.)

Clyde McPhatterSongs Of The Big City ... LP
Mercury, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A really great solo album from Clyde McPhatter – nicely different than his earlier solo work for Atlantic! The ex-lead Drifter gets a sort of "Spanish Harlem" treatment as he sings this great album of city songs for Mercury, including "My Block", "Deep in the Heart of Harlem", and "Three Rooms with Running Water", all of which are exclusive (we think) to this album. Great stuff, and maybe our favorite post-Atlantic album by Clyde! Arranged and produced by Alan Lorber, with a nice sound that's missing from some of his later pop efforts. LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing, with deep groove. Cover has two bumped corner, but the rest of this copy is great!)

✨✧ Charles McPhersonSiku Ya Bibi – Day Of The Lady (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Mainstream/Teichiku (Japan), 1972. Very Good ... $14.99
One of the most distinct early dates from reedman Charles McPherson – a unique "with strings" session recorded as a tribute to Billie Holiday – and with a style that shows off sides of McPherson's playing that wouldn't show up on other records for years to come! The album's got a beautifully understated quality – hip, adult arrangements by Ernie Wilkins – neither in his Basie-esque style of the early years, nor in any sort of slavish relationship to the Billie Holiday recordings of the 40s and the 50s either – which makes for a mode that just lets Charles flow with this wonderfully soulful tone on his alto – almost in a way that points towards some of Stanley Turrentine's music to come in such a setting. The core group features piano by Barry Harris, guitar by Earl Dunbar, bass by Sam Jones, and drums by Leroy Williams – plus larger backing by a string section – and titles include "Don't Explain", "Miss Brown To You", "Lover Come Back to Me", "Lover Man", and "God Bless the Child" – but all shaped beautifully and personally by McPherson! Xanadu, 1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great McPherson album – and one that shows him at his thoughtful, lyrical best! The playing is waaay out of the "Bird" bag that he got hooked with early on, and features some great long moody tracks with a 70's soul jazz feel to them. Mickey Tucker plays fantastic modal piano lines on the set – and tracks include "Promise", "Horizons", "Dee Blues", and "Night Eyes", all nice and soulful! Great stuff, and one of the lost 70's jazz treats from Xanadu! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clyde McPhatterWelcome Home ... LP
Decca, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An excellent comeback album from the great Clyde McPhatter! The record was recorded in 1970, after Clyde had spent some time in Europe, kicking about and getting his head together. Clyde's vocals are as great as ever – and the backings are sublime, some of the best he ever received! The album's produced by the team of Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Earl Young – and the trio also handled most of the arrangements, in that sweet late 60s style that was working such magic with Archie Bell & The Drells over at Atlantic. The standout cut on the album is "The Mixed Up Cup", a great soul number that begins with an excellent drumbreak that then goes into the sound of a cup being filled with water! Apart from that sound effect, though, the real strength is Clyde's voice, which is sweet, soulful, and honest on just about every track. Titles include "I'll Belong To You", "If You Only Knew", "Mr Heartache", "A Mother's Love", "Book Of Memories", "Someone To Believe In", and "Please Give Me One More Chance". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the Decca inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole.)

✨✧ Charles McPhersonQuintet/Live! ... LP
Prestige, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great set of soul jazz from McPherson – recorded live, with a rolling groove that's in the Blue Note mode of the mid 60s – but even more open overall! The group's got a lot of hometown talent from McPherson's native Detroit – including Barry Harris on piano, Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, and Ray McKinney on bass – and the mighty Billy Higgins handles the drums, always with a lean and fluid groove that works well with the extended energy of the set! McPherson's horn is sometimes a bit overshadowed by Hillyer's trumpet on the head arrangements – but given how much we like Lonnie, that's hardly a bad thing – and Charles more than comes into his own on the solos! The album features a catchy original called "The Viper", plus the tracks "Suddenly", "Shaw Nuff", and "Never Let Me Go". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original blue label pressing – nice and clean! Cover has some light wear, and a slight bit more near the opening edge – but still looks very nice overall.)

✨✧ Marian McPartlandBossa Nova + Soul ... LP
Time, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the most unique albums ever cut by pianist Marian McPartland – and definitely a set that offers up the bossa and soul promised in the title! Marian's playing electric and acoustic, over some very groovy rhythms from the trio of Ben Tucker on bass, Dave Bailey on drums, and Ralph Dorsey on congas – a group who give Marian a groove that's much more like the sort you'd find on a 60s record by Vince Guaraldi than any of her other work! The electric piano is great – not a Fender Rhodes, but most likely a Wurlitzer – which creates unusual tones that again really changes the McPartland sound – and the rhythms throughout create a wicked vibe, and loads of wonderful modal numbers. Titles include "Stranger In A Dream", "Coming Home Baby", "Green Dolphin Street", "Baby You Should Know It", "Love For Sale", "Tell Me", and "Sweet And Lovely". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe McPhee, Dave Rempis, Tomeka Reid, Brandon Lopez, & Paal Nilssen-LoveOf Things Beyond Thule Vol 1 (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Aerophonic, 2020. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The title's a reference to place once referenced by Edgar Allan Poe – but the music is very firmly grounded in reality, and comes from an improvised performance in Chicago by this very all-star ensemble! The album features one long track – "Quaanaq" – served up with really creative interplay between a quintet that features Joe McPhee on tenor and pocket trumpet, Dave Rempis on alto and baritone, Tomeka Reid on cello, Brandon Lopez on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums – all coming together in the best tradition of Windy City free jazz players working with key out of town talent! The blend of bass and cello at the heart of the music is really wonderful, and Paal makes sure to only step forward boldly when McPhee and Rempis are ready to let loose themselves – and the trio really balance the power of their expressions to make sure that Reid and Lopez get a chance to shape some more sensitive moments. ✨✧ Charles McPhersonLive In Tokyo (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Xanadu/Tokuma (Japan), 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from reedman Charles McPherson – a player who was really coming back to basics in the mid 70s, but also finding a way to stretch out with a sound that was different than his initial albums of a decade before! Charles has moved way past the straight bop that first got him notice – yet he's also got this deft way of making changes that hardly denies that legacy at all, and instead turns to a newly fluid sense of expression that might well make McPherson one of the most soulful altoists of his generation – especially in the long legacy of great records that flowed from this period. The group features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Leroy Williams on drums – and tracks are nice and long, with titles that include "Tokyo Blue", "East Of The Sun", "Desafinado", "Orient Express", and "Bouncing With Bud". Barry HarrisLive In Tokyo ... LP
Xanadu, 1976. Near Mint- ... $19.99 24.99
A great live set from pianist Barry Harris – material recorded on the same date that gave us the excellent Live In Tokyo album from reedman Charles McPherson – but done in a very different way that shows that Barry's clearly the leader on these tracks! The rhythm duo is wonderful – the mighty Sam Jones on bass and Leroy Williams on drums – players who can crackle when Harris wants them to, yet also lay back and give Barry lots of spacious territory to work some incredibly deft, personal magic on the keys. The sound almost takes us back to the initial Harris recordings of the early 60s, but also has some of those colors that would flow even more freely in some of his sessions for the Japanese market – on titles that include "I'll Remember April", "Fukai Aijo", "A Soft Spot", "Round Midnight", and "Un Poco Loco". Colemine, 2013. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
Deep funk, but with a compelling twist – bits of South American styles filtering into the mix from time to time, but in subtle ways that never lose the groove! The album's a soundtrack, but works more like a funk album on its own – and is a great full length follow-up to some of the hip 45 work we've heard from the Colemine label – showing that they may well be on the deeper path of a label like Daptone! The added elements make for some hip exotic inflections from time to time – almost echoes of El Michels, but in a different way – and titles include "Pablo's Dilemma", "High Noon", "Sigamos El Sol", "El Conquistador", "Nadie Puede Escpar", "Andean Folk Song", and "Mirror Door". The Minneapolis set features Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, Charles McPherson on alto, and Jaki Byard on piano – on another version of "So Long Eric" – this one recorded after Dolphy's death – plus a medley of standards, done the Mingus way! A nice little live date from Mingus – a bit looser, and almost a bit rougher than some of his other work from this vintage – but in a way that makes for a continually appealing set! The group here is a sextet – with Eddie Preston on trumpet, Charles McPherson on alto, Bobby Jones on tenor, and Jaki Byard on piano – and tracks are long and lively, taken at a pretty good clip with plenty of space for the soloists to do their own thing. TeenagersTeenagers Featuring Frankie Lymon ... LP
Gee, 1956. Very Good+ ... $6.99 9.99
They may be Teenagers, but this is hardly teen pop – as the album's a key step in the direction towards soul music for the 60s – thanks to the mighty power of the tragic Frankie Lymon! There's a sense of darkness to the album right from the start – even in the hit that kicks things off – and Lymon's heartbreaking quality never lets up – with a deep soul sensibility that may well top the group leads of Clyde McPhatter or Jackie Wilson in the same generation. Even some of the more playful moments have an undeniable power – and titles include the classic "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", plus "I'm Not A Juvenile Deliquent", "I'm Not A Know It All", "Love Is A Clown", and "Please Be Mine". Remember Beach music? Once upon a time we might have argued that was a more contemporary term for an older genre, like northern soul, but this mighty fine collection from the late 60s on Atlantic shows you the sound's been around for quite some time! A great soundtrack for the beach from the Carolina scene – sweetly loping grooves that got heavy play at summer resorts on the southern shores of the Atlantic! While not all the groups originated in the south, the music's gained a special place in the hearts of folks in the Carolinas, who've come to consider the music their own because of it's slightly stepping beat and gentle kind of groove! Epic, 1961. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hardbop albums don't get any better than this – and although drummer Dave Bailey only recorded for a brief stretch as a leader, this session's one that shows that he was a heck of a force to contend with! The record's got an intensity that easily rivals the best by Art Blakey over at Blue Note during the early 60s – but Dave's also got a slightly looser groove too – a bit more sense of humanity, and one that allows for really organic interplay between the players. There's a slight soul jazz undercurrent – especially in the piano lines of Billy Gardner – and other players in the quintet include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Frank Haynes on tenor, and Ben Tucker on bass. The group wails on an early version of Tucker's classic "Comin' Home Baby", plus other great originals like "Coffee Walk", "Lady Iris B", and "Two Feet In the Gutter". Scepter/Teichiku (Japan), Mid 1960s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real lost treasure from Art Farmer – a tremendous album that hardly ever shows up in the history books, and which, to our knowledge, has never properly been reissued! The set's a rare jazz side for the mostly-pop Scepter label – featuring Farmer at the head of a small group working with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Charles McPherson on alto, and either Steve Swallow or Ron Carter on bass. The album was done under the direction of Tom McIntosh – the brilliant young composer who had a magical talent for blending together modern and lyrical modes while still keeping a strong degree of soul. McIntosh contributed a few tunes to the set, as did Dennis Sandole – the nearly-forgotten trumpeter from the Philly scene of the 50s. There's a dark beauty to this session that surpasses even many other Farmer sides from the time – and titles include "Hyacinth", "Ally", "Happy Feet", "Minuet In G", and "Saucer Eyes". Mingus live is always a treat – especially in these later years, when the fire seemed to go out of most of his studio recordings. Live, though, he always managed to kick it hard - with the sort of emotion that graced his strong early albums. And despite the fact that this one's conducted by Teo Macero, and features some remarks from Bill Cosby – the affair's still pretty hip, and the soloists go to town nicely – with those stretched-out performances that always made for the best individual moments in a Mingus record! The record features great work from Gene Ammons and Bobby Jones on tenor, Lee Konitz and Charles McPherson on alto, James Moody on flute, Randy Weston on piano, Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, and Eddie Bert on trombone – and Honey Gordon sings a lovely vocal on the track "Eclipse". ✨✧ Phil WoodsWarm Woods ... LP
Epic, 1958. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most wonderful Phil Woods albums ever! No kidding – this is amazing! Woods played on lots of other records – and often in settings that made you wonder why people thought he was so great – but on this one, he's totally in the spotlight, fronting a mellow easy quartet that lets him play some incredible solos that go places we couldn't even imagine! The whole album's a fantastic treat – deeply soulful and introspective in a way that you can hardly imagine from most of Woods' other work in the 50s – and done with a rare energy that's made it one of our favorite albums for years. Every track sparkles – and the album's filled great tracks like "Gunga Din", "Waltz For A Lovely Wife", "Squire's Parlor", "I Love You", and "In Your Own Sweet Way". LP, Vinyl record album
(Very nice Japanese mono pressing – ECPZ 8.)

✨✧ DriftersDrifters' Golden Hits ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The golden hits of The Drifters, but a set that mostly features on the group's great second chapter at Atlantic Records – a time when original singer Clyde McPhatter had left the group, and Ben E King and Rudy Lewis came in with a very different style in the lead! Lieber & Stoller were strongly behind the group at this point, really making magic with the rhythms of the tunes too – those unusual rhythms that really set the early 60s Drifters apart from the pack – as you'll hear on cuts that include "There Goes My Baby", "(If You Cry) True Love, True Love", "Dance With Me", "This Magic Moment", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "I Count The Tears", "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "Up On The Roof", "On Broadway","Under The Boardwalk", "I've Got Sand In My Shoes", and "Saturday Night At The Movies". ✨✧ GroundhogsWho Will Save The World? ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A record that's maybe as famous for its cover art, done by comic legend Neal Adams, as it is for the music of The Groundhogs – who are really moving away here from the more blues-based work of their roots! The great Tony McPhee is on vocals and guitar, and also uses mellotron and harmonium in some really wonderful ways – and the sound here really has the group soaring with the sort of super-powered energy you might guess from the cover – a case of a British group tipping over nicely past their original inspirations, and finding a way to make hard rock magic that's very much all their own! Titles include "Wages Of Peace", "Music Is The Food Of Thought", "Bog Roll Blues", "The Grey Maze", "Earth Is Not Room Enough", and "Body In Mind". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the cool fold-out comic book cover. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some yellowing from age.)

United Artists/Veep, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Anthony and crew were one of the few groups who actually got better when they moved from the raw indie scene to the slicker major label one – as you'll hear perfectly on this set of some of their best work for the Veep/DCP/United Artists label. Teddy Randazzo handled all the arrangments and production, and his breathy uptown style works perfectly with the band's soulful harmonies. Titles include "Hurt So Bad", "I'm On The Outside (Looking In)", "Our Song", "Get Out Of My Life", and "Going Out Of My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

A complete collection Charles Mingus' classic recordings for the Candid label – far and away some of the best recordings he ever made, and some of the few studio sessions that really let him stretch out and do his thing! Players here are a firey lineup of young modernists that includes Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson, Charles McPherson, Booker Ervin, Paul Bley, Roy Eldridge, Tommy Flanagan, Jimmy Knepper, Jo Jones and Dannie Richmond – all working here with Mingus on really long tracks that burst out with raw emotion, intense energy, and some really searing solo work! 17 tracks spread out over 4 LPs, with titles that include "Lock Em Up", "MDM", "Stormy Weather", "Folk Forms No 1", "Original Faubus Fables", "Bugs", "All The Things You Could Be If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother", "Mysterious Blues", "Melody From The Drums", "Vasserlean" and "Wrap Your troubles In Dreams" LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Remi Gassmann/Oskar SalaElectronics – Electronic Music For The Ballet/Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape ... LP
Westminster, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Remi Gassman and Oskar Sala each present pieces of modern electronic music in this hard to find LP for Westminster, very much in the style that was in vogue in New York in the 50s and early 60s. Gassman performs his "Electronic Music For the Ballet Electronics", which has a spare spooky sound, and Sala gives us "Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape" – which are a bunch of short electronic tracks with a fragile, yet noisy feel to them. As the back of the record says "If anyone cares, this record has a dynamic range of 51 dB. Its lowest frequency is 15.4 cycles per second, its highest fundamental 3951 cps, the highest harmonis or overtone 15806 cps. It can blow out speakers, traumatize cats and arouse the landlord." Riverside/Milestone, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Four sides of Barry Harris, from four different sides! This album's a nice 70s compilation showcasing the piano player at his lyrical best, in a couple of different trio settings, as well as several somewhat uncommon solo numbers and a great quintet featuring then young and relatively unknown players Charles McPherson and Lonnie Hillyer on horns. The trio sides feature Joe Benjamin and Bob Cranshaw on bass and Elvin Jones and Clifford Jarvis on Drums. 17 tracks in all, including "Preminado", "One Down", "It's The Talk Of The Town", "My Heart Stood Still", "The Londonderry Air", "Mutattra", "Body & Soul", "Sphere", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Anthropology", "Burgundy", "Mucho Dinero", "Easy To Love", "Chasin' The Bird", "The Breeze & I", "'Round Midnight" and "Stay Right With It". ✨✧ Charles MingusMingus At Carnegie Hall ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Charles Mingus at Carnegie Hall – but playing here with relaxed and intimate feel that's not what you might expect from the staid setting! The album features 2 long tracks – both done in more of a jam session mode than any other Charles Mingus recordings we can think of. Both numbers are Ellington classics – "C Jam Blues" and "Perdido" – showcasing Mingus' late fascination with the Duke, but in a way that still preserves all of the modern inventions of his own earlier work. As on much of the best Mingus albums from the time, there's a real focus on the strengths of the soloists here – players who include Roland Kirk on tenor and stritch, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Jon Faddis on trumpet, John Handy on alto and tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, and Don Pullen on piano – all of whom really play with some sharp edges and bold notes! ✨✧ Charles MingusTown Hall Concert (United Artists) ... LP
United Artists, 1962. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A legendary work – featuring Charles Mingus' great and chaotic Town Hall concert, one of those special events that achieved legendary status before it even started – not just because of the range of great musicians involved, but because the whole set was barely off the ground by the time it began! The set features a brilliant set of arrangements that Mingus barely copied and handed around before the show started – but that hardly stopped the music from being great, because everyone plays magnificently, especially Jerome Richardson and Charles McPherson, who was hitting a really great period here with Mingus. Tracks include "Epitaph", "Clark in the Dark", "Freedom", and "My Search". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles TolliverImpact (Strata East) ... LP
Strata East, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of a few large group sessions recorded by Charles Tolliver during his years on Strata East – and an amazingly spiritual effort that really brings together the best strands of sounds running through the underground at the time! The format's a bit similar to Tolliver's previous Music Inc big band album for Strata, released 5 years before – with lots of strong lead action from Charles on trumpet, and Stanley Cowell on piano. But this time around, the larger group seems to be more fully integrated into the tunes – there not just to support the soloists, but to rise up with a full, proud sense of majesty that's really amazing. Other players include Cecil McBee and Reggie Workman on basses, Billy Parker and Warren Smith on percussion, Jon Faddis and Jimmy Owens on trumpets, John Gordon and Garnet Brown on trombones, and Charles McPherson, George Coleman, Harold Vick, and Charles Davis on saxes! Titles include great versions of the Tolliver classics "Plight" and "Impact" – plus "Mother Wit", "Lynnsome", and "Grand Max". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ West Coast Pop Art Experimental BandWest Coast Pop Art Experimental Band – Volume 2 ... LP
Reprise, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The amazing second album from this ultra-cool group – a set that's even weirder and wilder than their debut! The trio are maybe one of the few who really live up to the farthest expectations of the psych generation – as they're really open to let their minds fly in their choice of lyrics, instrumentation, and overall presentation of the record – which hardly seems the sort to yield any sort of singles at all, even though a few of the tunes are downright catchy! Instead, the whole thing's put forth as a dark statement on late 60s society – with a sound that's as heavy as the subject matter, and not afraid to really pus all the freak and fuzz as far as it can go! Quite surprising, even for the Reprise label – and tracks include "Queen Nymphet", "Tracy Had a Hard Day Sunday", "In the Arena", "Smell of Incense", "Suppose They Gave A War & No One Comes", "Overture Wcpaeb (part 2)", and "Carte Blanche" – which supposedly they were given in recording the album!
