James BrownI'm Real ... CD
Scotti Bros/CBS, 1988. Used ... $0.99
James Brown gets a new injection of life at the end of the 80s – thanks to a collaboration here with Full Force, who wrote, arranged, and produced the album! The groove here is often more in a Full Force mode than you might expect from James – a full-on 80s urban sound, filled with plenty of beats at the bottom, yet still allowing The Godfather plenty of space to do his thing vocally! In a way, the format's almost a bit like some of the James Brown remix work that was showing up around the same time – except that the tunes are all new, and somewhat different territory for James. Titles include "I'm Real", "Static (parts 1 & 2)", "You & Me", "Time To Get Busy", "She Looks All Types A Good", "Keep Keepin", and "Can't Git Enuf". CD

✨✧ Ron CarterBlues Farm ... CD
CTI/CBS, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet electric work from Ron Carter – subtle magic in the best CTI mode! Ron arranged the set himself, but he's working with a core group of CTI players that includes Bob James and Richard Tee on electric piano, Hubert Laws on flute, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, and Billy Cobham on drums – shifting mood, tone, and color with ease as each new track on the album emerges – and uniting the whole proceedings with work on acoustic bass and piccolo bass! Not funky, but very soulful – with a keen sense of space, but never too much so to make things snoozy. Titles include "Blues Farm", "Hymn For Him", "Two Beat Johnson", and "R2, M1". CD

Stanley ClarkeIf This Bass Could Talk ... CD
CBS/Portrait, 1988. Used ... $1.99
One of the last in a legendary run of albums that Stanley Clarke cut for Columbia records in the 70s and 80s – and a set that follows his genre-shifting approach to funky jazz wonderfully! Most numbers have small groupings of players – with Gerry Brown's drums often at the core – but Clarke continues to be inventive throughout – really bringing in a range of soul and other influences to his music, while still soloing in a jazzy mode – and hitting some of those sweet 80s styles that kept his music funky! Titles include "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "Stories To Tell", "I Want To Play For Ya", "Funny How Time Flies", and "Workin Man" – and Gregory Hines even tap dances on two tracks! CD
(Mall sticker remnant on booklet cover.)

Bob DylanHighway 61 Revisited (Original Master Recording SACD) ... CD
CBS/Mobile Fidelity, 1965. Used Gatefold ... $22.99
A pivotal moment for Bob Dylan – and maybe one of THE albums of the 60s! The newly-electrified Dylan really takes off here – putting more punch and bit into his already-strong lyrical approach – and twisting things in amazing ways that still leave us breathless all these many years later! And sure, the album gave Bob a few hits – which are nestled in here next to headier tunes that work together perfectly. Titles include "Like A Rolling Stone", "Ballad Of A Thin Man", "It Takes A Lot To Laugh It Takes A Train To Cry", "From A Buick 6", "Desolation Row", "Highway 61 Revisited", and "Queen Jane Approximately". Earth Wind & FireThat's The Way Of The World (expanded edition) ... CD
CBS, 1975. Used ... $2.99
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid 70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – "Shining Star (future star)", "All About Love (first impressions)", "Happy Feelin (anatomy of a groove)", "Caribou Chaser (jazzy jam)", and "That's The Way Of The World (Latin expedition)". Bill EvansMontreux II ... CD
CBS, 1970. Used ... $6.99
A brilliant return to Montreux from Bill Evans – working here with a trio that includes some killer bass work by Eddie Gomez! The set's an acoustic one – despite its appearance on electric powerhouse CTI – but Evans' work on the piano has an electricity that's all its own, magically crafting waves and shapes of sound and tone. And despite the CTI setting, there's a nicely spacious sound to the way the album was recorded – one that's got a bit less of the "perfection" than on some of Bill's other 70s live dates – a sense of humanity that comes through wonderfully, and which makes this one a very special record! Titles include "Very Early", "34 Skidoo", "Israel", and "Peri's Scope". CD

James Blood UlmerOdyssey ... CD
CBS/Sony, 1983. Used ... $16.99
One of our favorite Ulmer records, probably because there's a nice groove running underneath most of the numbers, in a sort of post-Prime Time 80s out-funk sort of way. It never drops into a flat out back beat, but there's always some sense of time, while Ulmer's guitar and Charles Burnham's violin venture to and fro. The group is just a trio, and there's not too much of Blood's vocalizing going on on the eight pieces, which include "Little Red House", "Are you Glad To Be In America", "Election" and "Odyssey". CD

Weather ReportHeavy Weather ... CD
CBS, 1977. Used ... $2.99
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The track's driving, building energy shows a newly focused side to Weather Report – one that's traded some of the spacier, more experimental moments of the past for a dynamic energy that still puts them ahead of most other 70s fusion supergroups. The presence of Jaco Pastorius is felt quite strongly here – especially on the way the colors ebb and flow up from the bottom – and the way that Jaco's using his bass with the energy of a solo jazz guitar! Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena are on percussion, and Wayne Shorter's reeds still crackle with a nice degree of soul – on titles that include "Harlequin", "Rumba Mama", "A Remark You Made", "Teen Town", "Palladium", "Havona", and "The Juggler". ✨✧ JuicySpread The Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/FTG, 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great later album from the Juicy duo – very much in the tightly grooving mode of their debut, thanks to continued production work by Deodato! The style's smooth, focused, and sharp-edged – but all without sounding too chart-oriented or clunky – and although the beats are electric, and supported with plenty of keyboards, there's a nice sense of warmth to the record overall – a key hallmark of Deodato's sensitivity in the studio. All tracks are originals by the Juicy team of Jerry and Katreese Barnes, and guests on the record include Chaka Khan and Bernard Wright. Titles include "Make You Mine", "All Work No Play", "Show & Tell", "After Loving You", "Private Party", "Serious", and "Midnight Love". CD features bonus tracks – "All Work No Play (all work mix)", "All Work No Play (all play mix)", and "All Work No Play (going left)". CD

✨✧ James BrownGravity ... CD
Scotti Bros/CBS, 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bit of a comeback for James Brown – a mid 80s outing recorded with Dan Hartman, who gives the record a "contemporary" sound that's definitely a great way to slide James in with the younger crowd at the time! The style's still funky, but has more street soul elements too – and the record sports guest appearances by Alison Moyet, Steve Winwood, and Stevie Ray Vaughan – and although the production is a bit stiff at points, there's some undeniable quality in James that still makes some nice moments shine through! Titles include "Gravity", "Let's Get Personal", "How Do You Stop", "Living In America", "Goliath", "Repeat The Beat", and "Return To Me". CD

Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison SextetIllumination! ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used ... $8.99
An amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! As the cover states, the ensemble's led by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones – and also features McCoy Tyner from Coltrane's quartet – yet the real charm of the record comes from the reed men, who include Prince Lasha on flute and clarinet, Sonny Simmons on alto and English horn, and Charles Davis on baritone sax! All players are free-thinking modernists, with ties to some of the farther reaches of 60s jazz – yet they work here in a beautifully inside mode, similar to Lasha's excellent Insight album on CBS UK – a vibe that takes all the most wonderful aspects of the Coltrane generation, but pushes them even further with some deeply personal expressions. Tracks include the seminal "Half & Half" – plus "Aborigine Dance In Scotland", "Oriental Flower", and "Nuttin Out Jones", and "Gettin On Way". CD

Hubert LawsSan Francisco Concert ... CD
CTI, 1976. Used ... $4.99
Really wonderful work from Hubert Laws – maybe one of his greatest albums for CTI! The record has a laidback feel that's similar to most of Laws' other work for the label, but somehow the live setting also brings out a bit more edge – and gives the record a gently funky groove that's sometimes missing from his other albums. The core group features Harvey Mason on drums (which may be part of the reason for the groove!) – plus Bob James on keyboards, Gary King on bass, and Glen Deardorff on guitar. A larger string section joins in on a few cuts, but they're really submerged in the mix, and the main sound comes from the smaller group. Tracks are all quite long – and titles include "Feel Like Making Love", "Farandole", "Modadji", and "Scheherazade". CD
(Out of print, CBS pressing.)
