✨✧ Dee Dee Sharp GambleWhat Color Is Love ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Dee Dee's come a long way from "The Mashed Potato Time" here – emerging as a full-blown modern soul artist, with the same sort of sophisticated twist as other Philly girl singers, like Jean Carn or The Jones Girls. The title cut is a great remake of Terry Callier's "What Color Is Love" – and other tracks include "Hang Your Portrait", "I Believe In Love", "Just As Long As I Know You're Mine", and "Tryin To Get The Feeling Again". LP, Vinyl record album

William HookerShamballa – Duets With Thurston Moore & Elliot Sharp ... LP
Knitting Factory/ORG, 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 34.99
Legendary jazz drummer William Hooker is in some pretty heady territory here – improvising alongside two different guitarists, both of whom really push the sound in ways that are different than some of Hooker's other records! Thurston Moore provides plenty of freaky sonic fuzz in the first half – and Elliott Sharp is pictured playing a twin-necked guitar in the second – both players who are no strangers to longform improvisation, and whose energy is easily met, if not beaten, but Hooker's incredible command of the drum Kit! The track with Moore is titled "Sirius" – and the one with Sharp is "The Hat & Its Train". LP, Vinyl record album

Dee Dee SharpAll The Hits By Dee Dee Sharp ... LP
Cameo, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... $6.99
Well, they certainly got the title right on this one! Dee Dee sings all the hits (or some of them, at least!) in her youthful gutsy soul style. Tracks include "Snap Your Fingers", "Seven Day Weekend", "Playboy", "Don't Play That Song", "Village Of Love", "Loco-Motion", and "The Wah-Watusi". Production's uncredited, but it's in the usual stormin' Cameo/Parkway vein! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dee Dee SharpBest Of Dee Dee Sharp – Cameo Parkway 1962 to 1966 ... CD
Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Socking soul from Dee Dee Sharp – one of the hardest acts on the legendary Cameo/Parkway label! Dee Dee's got a rough, gospelly tone in her vocals that makes for a really nice change from sweeter 60s girl singers – a gutsy approach to the lead that stands out wonderfully, and which really marks her as one of the key females in the move to deep soul at the time. This 24 track set is easily the best collection we've ever seen of her work for the Cameo label – and it's a well-done, remastered package that also features details for each individual tune – tracing Sharp's early work with arranger Dave Appell, up to later recordings with the soon-to-be-famous team of Leon Huff and Kenny Gamble, the latter of whom would later become Dee Dee's husband! Titles include "Mashed Potato Time", "Never Pick A Pretty Boy", "Rock Me In The Cradle Of Love", "Slow Twistin", "Ride", "Do The Bird", "Baby Cakes", "Why Doncha Ask Me", "There Ain't Nothin I Wouldn't Do For You", "Deep Dark Secret", "I Really Love You", "To Know Him Is To Love Him", and "It's A Funny Situation". ✨✧ Dee Dee SharpHappy Bout The Whole Thing ... LP
TSOP, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Damn great work from Dee Dee Sharp Gamble – a record that's quite different than her famous Philly soul of the 60s – much more mature, together, and with a positive, righteous undercurrent that's pure Philly International all the way! The set's got some great jazzy arrangements by Bobby Martin that recall some of the best Jean Carn work for the label – that cool Philly groove that was coming into play in the shadow of the label's clubby grooves – a vibe that works perfectly for Dee Dee, in ways we could have hardly expected a decade before. The album features a nice remakes of "Ooh Child" and "Not In Love" – plus the mellow "Touch My Life", and the cuts "Real Hard Day", "Best Thing You Did For Me", and "Happy Bout The Whole Thing". Cameo, Mid 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A set of classic groovers from Dee Dee Sharp – cut during her early stretch at Cameo/Parkway, at a time when Dee Dee was one of the hardest hard soul singers on the Philly scene! As you'd guess from the title, most of the tracks here have an upbeat groove that's aimed at the dancefloor – that best side of romping Philly 60s soul that's had such an influence on the Northern scene over the years – sung with that raspy, hard-edge sound that some of the Philly singers had going on a lot more than others from Detroit or Chicago. Titles include "Mashed Potato Time", "Hurry On Down", "Gravy", "Eddie My Love", "Gee", "Be My Girl", and "Slow Twistin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousModernity – 24 Super-Sharp Slices Of Rhythm & Blues, Soul, & Other Grooves ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set with "modernity" as the title, but a batch of tracks that sound plenty old all the way through – mostly the kind of upbeat soul tracks that played big with the 60s mod scene in London! Yet this isn't the usual collection of mod classics – as the work here is very obscure, and served up in the mix of rare singles and unreleased material that we totally love on other Ace/Kent Records collections – presented with great sound, and very detailed notes that are as fun to read as the songs are to hear! All the artists are American, and look very different than the dapper British gents on the cover – soaring out in a set list that includes "Deuces Wild" by Gary & Gary, "Just Can't Help Myself" by Birdlegs & Pauline, "Oh Lady Be Good" by Charles Hodges, "The Hawg (part 2)" by Eddie Kirk, "See See Rider" by Byrdie Green, "Walk Home With Me" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Sundown" by The Merced Blue Notes, "Go Away With Me" by Hollis Dixon & The Keynotes, "I Found A Little Girl" by Eddie Bo, "The Bounce" by Jackie Lee, "Earthquake" by The Fashionettes, "Air Travel" by Ray & Bob, "That's All I Want" by King Carl, "The Warm Up (part 1)" by Clifton White & His Royal Knights, "Soul Grabber" by Willis Jackson, and "Who Knows" by Willie Tee. Broadway QuintetAmalume ... LP
Zambezi/Sharp Flat (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 32.99
A killer full length set from this Zambian group of the 70s – a smaller combo made up of members from some of the bigger hotel bands of the time – coming together with a lean groove that's really wonderful throughout! Core elements include the guitar of Zacks Gwaze, the keyboards of Tony Maonde, and the saxophone of Simanga Tutani – and vocals are usually sung by one or a few members of the group together, often in these lightly lilting ways that roll along with the rhythms and instrumentation, rather than stand apart from them. Songs are short and tight – and the set includes the instrumentals "Matteo" and "Nifyo Fine", plus vocal numbers "Amalume", "Kayuni", "Mr Music Maker", "Pimu Chinanga", "Akana Ndiwo", and "Change Your Mind". ✨✧ Grant StewartGrant Stewart Plays The Music Of Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn ... CD
Sharp Nine, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tenorist Grant Stewart takes on the music of Ellington and Strayhorn – but in a sweet small combo mode that's nicely swinging, and a lot more relaxed than the standard Ellington mode! The tunes have a strong focus on Stewart's rich tenor tone – blown in an easygoing, open way – but with a great degree of sharpness, too – a rare blend that's made Grant one of the leading tenor talents of his generation. Rhythm is never too intrusive, and handled by Tardo Hammer on piano, Paul Gill on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – on titles that include "The Feeling Of Jazz", "Raincheck", "Angelica", "Tonight I Shall Sleep", "Star Crossed Lovers", and "Something To Live For". WitchKuomboka ... LP
Teal/Sharp Flat (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 34.99
A surprisingly great later set from Witch – one that still has some of their funky styles of a few years before, but which also seems to bring in some stronger African elements as well – in the kind of sweet fusion that was showing up in some of the hipper South African acts of the period. The sound is more late 70s, especially in the keyboards, than some of the clunkier pop that you might expect from the 1984 date – and a few really great numbers have cool moogy touches that really make the record stand out. Titles include "Erotic Delight", "Come Together", "More Sweat Than Sweet", "I Wanna See The Light", and "Kuomboka". LP, Vinyl record album

WitchMovin' On ... LP
Teal/Sharp Flat (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
An unusual later album from Witch – one that has a sweet funky style at the core – a mode that shows the group picking up a fair bit of disco and club from the American scene, and fusing it with their older Zamrock styles to create a really unique sound overall! At times, the record echoes some of the Euro disco records of the late 70s – but there's also a deeper current to the record too, especially on some of the more personal tunes. Keyboards take over more than guitar at times – and although the group's name originally meant "We Intend To Create Havoc", this record might have changed the meaning to "We Intend To Create Happiness". Titles include "To Be Felt", "Movin On", "I'm Coming Back", "Let's Get Together", "It Feels So Good", and "My Desire". LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful harmony soul from Act 1 – a group we totally love when they're in this mode – just grooving enough to open up the vocals a bit, stepping along with some great east coast sweet soul production! "Night Of The Wolf" is a completely different track, but equally groovy – a sharp funky instrumental with all sorts of fast-riffing guitar, taken from a rare Italian sound library album of the 70s – and topped with a cool whistle that almost has a spaghetti western vibe! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Pepper AdamsJulian ... LP
Enja/Inner City, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius work from Pepper Adams – one of those players we sometimes forget about, then drop the needle on a record like this and fall in love with his music all over again! Adams blows baritone sax like nobody else – with a sensitivity that you'd normally hear on tenor, and a mix of modes that should have made him one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation – something that maybe didn't happen because of his unusual horn! Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. Titles include "Julian", "Ad Astra", "Jirge", "Spacemaker", and "Three & One". LP, Vinyl record album

Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi & Charlie MarianoToshiko Mariano Quartet (Candid) ... CD
Candid, 1960. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
One of the few recorded meetings of alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and pianist Toshiko Akioshi in the studio – quite strange given that they were a couple at the time! The session's easily one of the last great American sessions by either player – a work that shows Mariano's alto really building on the strengths of his work in the 50s, and Akioshi's piano shedding some of its early bop influences, and going for the richly-toned sound that would serve her greatly in the 70s. The long tracks here offer plenty of space for Charlie's sharp tone to really do its thing – and that raspy warmth of the 50s is even more deeply soulful at this point – and augmented by a new sense of composition that gives the record some of its best tracks. There's almost a nascent sense of spiritualism here – quite unusual for the time – and titles include "When You Meet Her", "Toshiko's Elegy", "Deep River", and "Little T". CD

Thomas Dunne, 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
You might know Viv Albertine as a member of The Slits – and that role enough would be more than enough to make this book exciting – but Albertine also gives us a surprisingly rich, surprisingly long tapestry of her life in music – one that begins years before The Slits came together, and which takes personal and professional pathways in later years that are quite a surprise! Viv's writing style is as straightforward as her music – which can make the book especially illuminating when she tells tales about other famous figures, or about the scene in general – which she always seems to view with a sharp eye. The book is 421 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Book

Posi-Tone, 2023. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Hammond player Jim Alfredson works here in a setting that's nicely full and rich – one that mixes his sharp work on the organ with just the right sort of horn contributions – in a mode that's got some of the best energy of the Lonnie Smith or Lou Donaldson late 60s organ years on Blue Note! Part of the record's strength comes from the wonderfully snapping drums of EJ Strickland, sounding even funkier than usual – and really providing the right sort of crackle to push lean and groovy performances from the trombone of Michael Dease, trumpet of Alex Sipiagin, and tenor of Diego Rivera – all players we're not used to hearing in such a setting! The group also features guitar from Will Bernard and percussion from Kevin Jones – on original titles that include "Foster Blues", "The Side Eye", "Reo Town", "Strange Matter", "For Miles", and "Verna". Sharp tenor from the great JD Allen – a very striking set that's filled with all original compositions – work that really shows the way that Allen's grown strongly as both a writer and player in recent years! There's a sense of darkness to the record right from the start – a brooding intensity that finds a way to both move forward and fold back on itself – this kind of elliptical mode that's very compelling, and brought into strong focus by a quartet that features Eldar Djangirov on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Jonathan Barber on drums. Titles include "Grace", "Chagall", "Load Star", "Cross Damon", "Detroit", "Mass", and "The Little Dipper". CD

BGP (UK), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Mose Allison is one of the coolest, grooviest singers ever to grace the face of jazz – a voice you'll recognize instantly, even if you don't know his name – and an artist who had a huge influence on the sound of the London scene in the 60s! Mose was mod before mod was a thing – and was able to mix his sharp jazz skills on piano with a gutbuckety style of singing that drew heavily from the sound of New Orleans – as did his sense of rhythm – but always with an approach that was more upbeat and jazzy overall, with a hip sophistication that few other artists could hope to touch! And while Mose recorded excellent sounds for decades, this collection focuses in on some of the most important work he ever cut – music done for Prestige, Columbia, and Atlantic Records from the late 50s through the early 70s – served up in the most amazing tribute to Allison we've ever seen. 24 tracks in all – with cuts that include "Foolkiller", "I'm Not Talking", "If You Only Knew", "The Seventh Son", "I'm Smashed", "Wild Man On The Loose", "Back On The Corner", "I Love The Life I Live", "Jus Like Livin", "If You Live", "V8 Ford Blues", "Parchman Farm", "Baby Please Don't Go", "Western Man", "Your Molecular Structure", "Hellow There Universe", and "Swingin Machine". A mad batch of funky grooves, with a world's worth of influences in the mix – elements of African, Indian, and other styles – all wrapped around some mighty funky instrumentation at the core! One track has a bit of sitar, another some Ethio organ, one more some Nigerian rhythms – and the album progresses with a lean vibe that makes each of these cultural references nicely unified next to the sharp funky instrumentation at the core! Without the global elements, the set would already be a great funk record – but with them alongside, it really soars to the skies – on titles that include "Mehal Safari", "Flugzeug String Machine", "Tilahun", "The Chase", "Stranger To Myself", and "Seven Wisdoms Of Plutonia". Epic, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
The second album by Argent – Rod Argent's project immediately after the breakup of the Zombies! There's plenty of Zombie-like ideas here – particularly those floating around the Odyssey and Oracle album, but they're also done without the dreamy pop style of Colin Blunstone's vocals, which makes for a much harder sound overall. Added into that the guitar of Russ Ballard, which really kicks into the tunes nicely, and you've got some great rock and roll work – written with a pop sensibility, but played with a razor-sharp edge that's pretty hard hitting. Titles include "Lothlorien", "Rejoice", "Pleasure", "Sweet Mary", "Where Are We Going Wrong", "Rejoice", "Cast Your Spell Uranus", and "Celebration". LP, Vinyl record album

Don't let the pot reference on the cover put you off, or give you the wrong sort of idea about the record – as the whole thing's tight, sharp, and pretty darn groovy – a wicked batch of blue-eyed soul from the Bay Area scene of the mid 70s, served up at a level that's not too far from some of the best work on Fantasy Records at the time! These guys are clearly a rock band, but have drunk up a heady brew of funk and soul – augmented in both the rhythm elements and the nice use of horns, as well as some of the great lead vocals from singer Paulette Collins! The record's a lost one, but definitely continues that great late 60s Bay Area mode of mixing soul and rock together in a very joyous way – on titles that include the funky sample cut "Mess Up Your Mind", plus "You Got Something", "Clap Your Hands", "First Taste Of Love", "Gonna Make It", "Sativa", "Don't You Worry", "Trying To Hold It Down", and "Skyrocket". An expanded, remastered version of the album Prophecy – early work by Albert Ayler, recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after his untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". ESP/ZYX (Germany), 1964/1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A double-length set that brings together 2 key early live sets by Albert Ayler – both recorded on the New York scene of the mid 60s! Bells was an unusual one-sided record that featured only 20 minutes of music, performed with an intensity that hardly leaves room for complaints about the shortness of the album! The single track "Bells" was performed at Town Hall by Ayler with a group that includes Donald Ayler on trumpet, Charles Tyler on alto sax, Lewis Worrell on bass, and Sunny Murray on percussion – all coming together in a raw, real sense of freedom – beautifully explored here without ever getting too overindulgent. The tune may well be one of the greatest illustrations of the ESP format at its best – as Ayler and company never stray too far, but carve out some incredibly imaginative space through their starkly-blown horn solos! Prophecy is longer – a full album that was recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after Ayler's untimely early death. Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge 2CD set – one that features important European work that saxophonist Albert Ayler recorded with trumpeter Don Cherry! CD1 brings together six tracks from Albert Ayler's Hilversum Radio sessions from 1964 – plus an additional three tracks recorded in Denmark a few months earlier! The first six titles are a famous performance by a famous group set loose on a European tour in 1964 – Ayler on tenor, Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murry on drums – recorded in The Netherlands for a small audience in a Dutch radio studio! The setting is a wonderful one – a mix of the live freedoms that would really let Ayler stretch out – especially when playing overseas – but recorded with the clarity of some of his studio albums for ESP – that sharp-edged sound that really highlights the groundbreaking style of his playing! The rest of the group here is equally great, and Murray is completely freed up from rhythm at points, to fly beautifully with the rest – on titles that include "Angels", "CAC", "Infant Happiness", "Ghosts", and "No Name". The same group performs on the final three tracks – recorded in Copenhagen for Danish Radio, with an equally great level of clarity – on "Saints", "Spirits", and "Vibrations". The interplay between Ayler and Cherry is especially great – echoing the latter's material with Ornette Coleman, but with a different sort of edge! CD2 features amazing live material from 1964 – work that was recorded at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen, right around the same time that Albert Ayler recorded his album for Debut Records – and a set that has his quartet in even more firey formation overall! The tracks are long, and Ayler is completely unbridled – at a level that really shows not only how much of a leader he was to the American avant underground, but what an inspiration he was to the European free scene too – who could only help but take a big cue from his work here on tenor! The group also features equally wonderful work from Don Cherry on cornet – sounding quite different than when with Ornette Coleman – plus bass from Gary Peacock, whose dark tones really set the mood – and drums from Sunny Murray, who is also at an explosive point in his career. The material is remastered wonderfully, with permission from Albert Ayler's estate – and titles include "Mothers", "Saints", "Vibrations", Spirits", "Children", and a shorter "Spirits". CD

Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. One of the few early albums as a leader cut by trumpeter Benny Bailey – a tremendous talent, finally getting his due! Bailey is one of the great unsung talents of jazz, and he's always made top-shelf work – from his early days with Quincy Jones, to his later years as an American expatriot, recording for European labels like Ego and MPS. This rare early session is one of the few recorded for the super-hip Candid label – and it features Bailey's trumpet at the head of a tight combo that includes Phil Woods on alto sax and bass clarinet, Julius Watkins on French Horn, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and rhythm from Buddy Catlett on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Despite the "big brass" title, there's no horn section here – and instead, most of the numbers have that sharp-edged modern sound we associate with Candid – with Watkins horn being the only other brass instrument, alongside the lighter lines of Woods and Spann. Savoy, 1961. Used ... $6.99
Some of the greatest modern jazz ever recorded! Tenorist Bill Barron is like no other – and although he's softened a bit in recent years, during the early 60s he was working with trumpeter Ted Curson to forge a bold new sound that was different from much of what was happening at the time. Barron and Curson had a sharply-tuned approach to jazz, free in their solos, but with the same kind of frenetic scoring as Charles Mingus – who's probably their most sympathetic relation musically, and who also employed each of them at various points in their career. In a way, Barron and Curson take off from the energy of Mingus dynamic 1957 sessions, an energy that was flagging in his own work at the time – but which was taken to the next level on these Savoy sides from 1961. The playing is razor-sharp, very angular – but never without soul and never too academic to swing. It's also equally committed to reigning in freedom at just the right points – allowing bright flourishes of dynamic playing from a member of the group, yet never too much to dominate the overall energy of the ensemble. The set's got 11 tracks in all – 4 from Barron's Modern Windows Suite LP, and 7 more from The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron. Titles include "Blast Off", "Ode To An Earth Girl", "Oriental Impressions", "Fox Hunt", and "Men At Work". CD

Philips/Universal (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The start of an amazing legacy in Brazilian music – and a record that really lives up to its title! Jorge Ben completely reinvents the samba here – and comes up with his own new groove in the process – by blending sharp acoustic guitar lines with rootsy percussion – all at a level that's far more rhythmic than the used of the instrument in bossa nova. There's definitely a bossa element – but Joao's singing is a lot more soulful, as is the overall performance – and the styles started here not only launched Ben's career, but also had a huge influence on generations of musicians to come! Titles include the sublime original version of "Mas Que Nada" - plus "Tim Dom Dom", "Chove Chuva", "A Tamba", "Balanca Pema", and "Rosa Menina Rosa". Great stuff, and essential all the way through – we promise! CD

✨✧ Jerry BergonziRigamaroll ... CD
High Note, 2015. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tenorist Jerry Bergonzi has a pensive look on the cover here – and that's a really good illustration of the quality of the music – sounds that are maybe more thoughtful and introspective than some of Jerry's other recent albums! The sound builds here in these blocks of longer lines – over rhythms that feature comping structures of piano from Bruce Barth, as both Bergonzi's tenor and the trumpet of Phil Grenadier move almost in geometric shapes of color and tone – still very much with the sharp edges that make Jerry one of the key inheritors of the Joe Henderson tradition. Titles include "Rise Up", "A Hankering", "Tidlig", "Rigamaroll", and "Lunar Aspects". CD

Tim Berne's SnakeoilFantastic Mrs 10 ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. Used ... $16.99
That's no snake oil in the bottle, it's fantastic music from this razor-sharp quintet – maybe one of the most fantastic projects that saxophonist Tim Berne has given us in many years, and a group that just seem to get better and better with each new record! There's a combination of reed and percussive elements here that's really wonderful – alto from the leader, bass clarinet from Oscar Noriega, piano and tack piano from Matt Mitchell, and drums, vibes, gongs, tanbou, and glockenspiel from Ches Smith – all then strung together by guitar work from Marc Ducret, whose range of sounds really matches those of the other players! Mitchell also adds in a bit of modular synth – and titles include "Surface Noise", "Rolo", "Dear Friend", "The Amazing Mr 7", "Third Option", "Rose Colored Assive", and "The Fantastic Mrs 10". CD

✨✧ John Betsch SocietyEarth Blossom (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful session of spiritual soul jazz – and one of the rarer albums on the legendary Strata East label! The obscure combo is led by drummer/percussionist John Betsch – and instrumentation includes guitar, piano, electric piano, and reeds – all used with plenty of warm touches, and a few sharp edges – all very much in the best Strata East mode of the time! The tracks have a soaring sort of sound – similar to some of the Keno Duke material on the label, but also touched with some trippier edges too – a great blend that really brings a lot of depth to the session, and which has made this one of our favorite Strata sides over the years. Titles include "Song For An Untitled Lady", "Ra", "Get Up & Go", and "Ode To Ethiopia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition reissue of 1000 copies.)

✨✧ Art BlakeyHard Drive ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
A well-titled set from Art Blakey – considering the hard-driving sound of the group! The album's one of the best from that unusual year of 1957 – almost a "lost" year for Art, when he was working away from Blue Note with a very different lineup of the Jazz Messengers than on his famous sessions for that label! The players here are all great – and include Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Junior Mance on piano, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – all working with a style that's a bit loose and open, allowing plenty of space for solos! Griffin's horn has all the sharp edges you'd expect, and Hardman's great too – and Blakey himself seems to sit back a bit more than usual in his chair, letting the soloists lead the tracks, instead of kicking things into gear from the drums. Titles include "Deo X", "Sweet Sakeena", "Late Spring", "Krafty", and "For Miles & Miles". CD

Art BlakeyIn This Korner ... LP
Concord, 1978. Very Good ... $7.99
Art Blakey at the Keystone Korner – really rattling the rafters with a great lineup that includes Bobby Watson on alto sax, David Schnitter on tenor, and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet! Although the Shorter/Morgan lineup is always hailed as one of Blakey's best, we're also pretty partial to this great late 70s stretch of The Jazz Messengers – as it shows some wonderful early flowering of Watson's alto, and his songwriting abilities; Ponomarev's well-blown trumpet lines; and Schnitter's crisp, sharp lines on tenor – always carved out with a great depth of feeling. Add to the mix some great piano from James Williams, and bass from Dennis Irwin, and you've got a great lineup next to Blakey's drums – all working together in a rough-edged, hard soul space on tracks that include "Pamela", "Unlimited", "Dark Side Light Side", "Blues For Two", and "In This Korner". LP, Vinyl record album
